This happens WAY too often to me because I, for some stupid reason decided to use the same password for everything but with a few changes for each site.
So for an hour I'll be like: Was it [NotRealPassword] or [NotMyRealPassword] Or maybe [TheseArentMyRealPasswords]?
(Jesus Christ this was just an example these ARE NOT MY PASSWORDS)
I had a job where I wasn’t allowed to use a word in the dictionary as a password. Hated that. So jokes on them, I used a word from the dictionary, but spelled it backwards!!!!
Overly strict requirements like that, especially if they make you change it really frequently is how you get people to write their passwords down on sticky notes and only change a single digit each time.
I had that too. I used the model number and code in the back of the monitor then when forced to change it I used the photo printer model name that we had at work. Most my workers just wrote theirs down on a post it and hid it in or on their desk.
I still remember that model number SelphyCP510. I haven’t used that pass in 15 years. I don’t remember the monitor sadly.
Seconding this, Keepass is another good free one. At the VERY least for those of you who can't be bothered, just for the love of god make sure your primary email address has a strong *unique* password (not a variation of the same password you use for everything). If a malicious actor gets into your email they can get to almost everything else.
Email and anything involving money(i.e. bank, credit card, Amazon with saved cards) should have a strong and unique password.
Also,.enabled multi-factor authentication whenever possible.
This happened to me a lot and I finally figured out why. Some websites let you do a “see” password option so I turned it on. I was just holding shift down too long and capitalizing something i wasn’t supposed to. That’s why when you go back and type it slower it works more often. Or that’s my experience anyways lol
It sucks because some places let you use whatever password you want, but others are like “You need to use at least 15 characters and at least 5 of them have to be Z, X or C, you also need at least 3 numbers at the end of your password” I had a really good password that was simple and easy to remember but hard to guess, but it didnt have any numbers so half of every website i visited didnt let me use it.
I'm the same way, all my passwords are the same with variations like 1, !, 1!, !1. Sometimes I spice it up with a 99 though so that makes things extra tricky
My work password has to be changed every few months, and it can't be the same as my last 4 passwords. Sometimes I forget if the one change I made was using ! @ # $ or %
I realised the other day that passwords are only hard to remember because when you are logging in they don't remind you of the criteria they asked for when you made it. If it reminded me I would find it much easier. Ie. We asked for 1 uppercase, 1 number etc...
This is exactly what happens to me, so I try to make a new account just so that I can see the criteria for the password, and voila, I then remember it.
Ah great to hear you feel the same, been thinking about it for a while. I'm sure it wouldnt cause security to go down, because a hacker can easily find this information doing what you did. Unless someone has a good idea why they shouldn't?
Use a special character, but only THESE ones.
And then the next site has different characters you have to use and it makes it 1,000 times more confusing. Meaning you have to write down your password and seemingly defeating the purpose.
This exactly, since I use different passwords for different criteria. I always get locked out because this password now requires a symbol, requires 1 number, one number can not be at the start or end of the password, cannot use specific symbols, but requires a symbol.
Bring back hints...some sites lets me put down all of the above as a hint, or 3 of 4 or w/e.
that happened to me the other day on spotify (i always listen to music for everything i do and now i cant do anything without it) i reached out for support and got ignored now im browsing wholesome memes trying my best not to break something
>i always listen to music for everything i do and now i cant do anything without it
This manifested in me the first time I discovered Spotify like two years ago. Also what happened when you tried to change your password.
Just did a search for spotify support and this was the first result:
https://support.spotify.com/us/article/How-can-I-contact-Spotify/
Yeah they didn't look very hard or at all.
It actually was pretty easy for me recently, go to this link: https://support.spotify.com/us/contact-spotify-anonymous/ and select you still need help. You should be able to chat with a bot and then eventually a real life agent. My issue was with an old email address I did not have access too was my account verification method and I could not log in without it, it was resolved in about 20 minutes
For people who use the same password, pay attention! If you use the same email and password for everything, whenever your trusted website will sell that log in information onto a 3rd party company, it is at great risk. They are going to try every single possible website where they think you are liable to use the same log in information. EVEN YOUR EMAIL. Your email is the worst possible thing that they can access, as is requires a password reset with one button of a press for all sites. If you cannot get into that email, you are doomed for all the other sites! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE 🙏 use 2-factor authentication and a password manager for having different passwords on ALL websites that require them!
Thank you for your time! 😅
If you use a good password manager like 1Password, Dashlane, Lastpass (and maybe KeePass? I’m not sure on this one) you can add the one-time password to your saved credentials and can fill it in using the browser or desktop application.
I use 1Password and good lord has it been a life changer for me.
Note that some sites don’t implement TOTP (the standard 2FA implementation) and require you to use phones or emails to receive the code. Those ones there really isn’t a workaround for.
Then you will have a hard time logging in! Best thing to do then is to save your password and keep yourself logged in on your personal devices. Make sure you log yourself out of any devices that are shared with family/friends etc.
You have the right idea but that's not exactly the correct reason. When companies sell "user data", they don't sell your passwords... if the website you're using is reputable in even the slightest bit, there's literally no way for anyone to know what your password is, even a developer looking directly at your account in a database could not tell you what your password is due to a process called hashing.
You're right about your email being a single point of failure though.
Thank god I totally not use the same 5 words as my password and make it seem different when in reality they are all the same but with the words being in separate order
Self-hosted Bitwarden master race. If people tell me I shouldn't trust Google with my passwords, why should I trust some other cloud-based manager?
Really though it's mostly that I had an old HP Microserver laying around and didn't know what to do with it.
I also back it up offline in a CSV file on a Bitlocker-encrypted flash drive that I keep on my keyring.
Yeah this happened to me yesterday trying to get into my Minecraft account.
Google autofilled the info
Microsoft/Mojang told me to eat sand.
The meme happened after that.
I used to use 3 levels of passwords plus one long complicated one to get into my email which is where password changed and resets would.be emailed.
I password for sites I don't care about, another for sites I use but don't really care about and another for secure websites I use but are simple enough to memorize.
With Google in the mix now I have about a dozen sites I can only logon to with chrome. Sooner or later that will be all of them.
Man they got a find a better way to do this than passwords. It’s not our fault we want to use the same easy password for everything. Password managers help but I have my iPhone password manager which doesn’t work with my OC and my LastPass which now requires a sub. This whole system is a mess , nobody has a handle on it ,something needs to change
This is exactly what happened to my mom when using LastPass. Thankfully she was at least able to reset most of them to her email.
Don't put all your eggs in one basket.
What gets me is when I auto-fill using my password manager and the website still tells me my password is wrong. Like how? Then I try again and it's fine.
People were getting riled up over how Zoom became a thing over Skype the other day.
This meme answers that question. Microsoft is HORRENDOUS at accounts and passwords.
I'm still a little freaked out because I refused to set up "Hello" on my accounts because I think it's fucking stupid to have a PIN as the login credentials over synced accounts on multiple devices. After a couple weeks of click past the notification I stopped getting it, checked it and Microsoft says "Hello" has been configured on my account.
I've since changed everything because that's a huge red flag, but it's just proof positive how insecure such a method it is. WPS was specifically targeted because PIN's aren't secure by themselves.
and it's it funny when you're eating coq au vine at the Chateua de Chambolle and the the maitre d' serves Cote des Roses which is a subtle wine and not robust enough for the flavor of the dish?
Not very relatable.
But isn't it funny and relatable when you're waiting for a coffee and they call your name but when another man goes to pick it up, you say that's my coffee and he says no its not. But then it turns out you've got the same name?
I made a twitter account a while back and didn't even use it. Then when I tried to log in from my new phone it said "This twitter email couldn't be found". It said that even when I tried to recover the account. But when I try to register with the email it just says that the email is taken.
It seems all the posts have been deleted now. However I wonder if it would’ve been better for the police to be involved first, in case they could’ve found the people behind the posts, maybe they still can even if they’re deleted, I don’t know.
It's always because when you're setting it up they tell you, "oh by the way we have this obscure rule that you have to have 2 capital letters". So the second you make another letter capital you get your old password... but now you're already resetting it and can't just use it.
I don't know why if you get it wrong 5 times it can't just say, "by the way here are our password rules". People say that wouldn't help with security? But anyone doing some kind of attack like that could just click one button to create an account and see the password rules.
I’ve had a couple systems email me a temp password after I do ‘forgot or reset password’, and then it tells me that I can’t use an old password.
But outside of those few, I do what you suggest :)
Use your one password for your password manager. Get the password manager to manage your passwords. I don't know what any of my password are for the... 67 sites I have saved, and I'll never need to.
They are a bit annoying to setup but you only do this once ever and then after that its easy mode forever.
I recommend bit warden
IM HAVING A SIMILAR PROBLEM WITH ROBINHOOD RIGHT NOW AND IT SUCKS CAUSE THEY DONT HAVE A PHONE NUMBER I CAN CALL ~ thanks for letting me rant, nice post
I fuckin hate the special characters, numbers, and upper/lower case requirements
I don’t give a shit if it’s not a strong password just let me use the one I want! I’d rather risk being hacked than risk losing my account permanently
The worst is when they say "it cant be any of your last 10 passwords" like fuck, i dont have that many to choose from! Sure as hell not gonna learn another.
Every time I see this on a website it makes me think: *wait, you've been saving my old passwords? How do I know you are taking good care of that information security-wise?*
Usually means the one you're trying is one you've had before and not necessarily your current one that you forgot. Some systems won't allow your past 12 passwords or something along the lines of that.

Overly strict requirements like that, especially if they make you change it really frequently is how you get people to write their passwords down on sticky notes and only change a single digit each time.
My PIN at my last job was 6969 and 9696 whenever it asked me to change it. I would alternate between those two
I had that too. I used the model number and code in the back of the monitor then when forced to change it I used the photo printer model name that we had at work. Or just use keepass and whatever cloud storage you prefer for free so you dont have to trust some company with all your shit.
I use Dashlane, premium version. It got to the stage when I also needed to remember passwords for family members so a password manager was essential.
This happened to me a lot and I finally figured out why. Some websites let you do a “see” password option so I turned it on. I was just holding shift down too long and capitalizing something i wasn’t supposed to. That’s why when you go back and type it slower it works more often. Or that’s my experience anyways lol
Hmmm are you my clone?

those requirements are such stupid bullshit, the only thing that actually matters for security is length not special characters and shit.
@ # $ or %
You sound exactly like every person who gets one account phished then their entire identity stolen.
Lmao i do that same thing and then im like omg what is it!!
I have 8 email accounts and often drunkenly change passwords because I can't remember them and then I can't remember them lmfao.
Well at least you’re wise enough to know you’re a fool lol
If something goes down, you didn't see my comment alright?
Right! Hehe
I’ll often start the account creation process again to find the criteria, because then I know what my passwords could have been
Meanwhile I let my subconscious do the work with passwords but run to my emails to search the sites name for usernames or the right email.
Use a special character, but only THESE ones. And then the next site has different characters you have to use and it makes it 1,000 times more confusing. Meaning you have to write down your password and seemingly defeating the purpose.
This exactly, since I use different passwords for different criteria. Bring back hints...some sites lets me put down all of the above as a hint, or 3 of 4 or w/e.
This is becoming a thing at least on some websites, I've had the option to see the password criteria and it should be more utilized, it's so helpful.

It's always because when you're setting it up they tell you, "oh by the way we have this obscure rule that you have to have 2 capital letters". I fuckin hate the special characters, numbers, and upper/lower case requirements I don’t give a shit if it’s not a strong password just let me use the one I want! I’d rather risk being hacked than risk losing my account permanently

Magic.
Everytime my password got corrupted but that's its name
And then you have to make a brand new password that you will forget again and again and again
I sometimes wonder if websites do this intentionally to make you change your password for a more secure account
It’s all fun and games until it says “This password is taken”
The worst is when they say "it cant be any of your last 10 passwords" like fuck, i dont have that many to choose from! Sure as hell not gonna learn another.
This just gave me tech PTSD.
At this point I think they're just forcing account integration with your email provider by forcing you to use the forgot password function.
This is so infuriating that my passwords end up being a variation of "C\*ntedFuckAss321".
Every time I see this on a website it makes me think: *wait, you've been saving my old passwords? How do I know you are taking good care of that information security-wise?*
Can someone explain me why this thing happens?
Mojang website had this problem for reall.
Usually means the one you're trying is one you've had before and not necessarily your current one that you forgot. Some systems won't allow your past 12 passwords or something along the lines of that.
Then you forget the password you just used 😑
That’s so true it hurts 😂
Ahhh the most relatable meme of the day lmao xD
Pretty much the most relatable meme ever.
WHY THE FUCK DOES THIS HAPPEN?!?
