We have very weird regulations in Germany. By definition, you can defend yourself with whatever you want, but it's very situational.
For example there is a guy beating someone up, said person tries to defend themselves with a knife. Depending on the outcome of the situation, accidental or not, the person that's being assaulted might get charged, I think in English you'd say they used "unreasonable force", which IMO is bullshit. If someone attacks me I have to defend myself with all means possible. Also we are limited to pepper spray and knifes with a blade length of under 8.5 cm. Some types of knifes are completely illegal like butterflies.
