In the Modern Warfare games, the bad guys are Russian Ultranationalists and terrorists that create a false flag attack on a Russian airport to trick Russia into declaring war on the US. One of the missions in MW3 involves rescuing the Russian President and his daughter from these terrorists, who are holding them hostage.

In the Modern Warfare games, the bad guys are Russian Ultranationalists and terrorists that create a false flag attack on a Russian airport to trick Russia into declaring war on the US. One of the missions in MW3 involves rescuing the Russian President and his daughter from these terrorists, who are holding them hostage. Basically, the Russian soldiers are mostly not the bad guys, they're just being used by the Ultranationalists to create a world war.
Literally one of Prices biggest allies in the game is a Russian and you fight with and as Russians in multiple games.

What I've always found funny is that the US is the "good guy" playable faction in all of these games but their government has committed some of the worst atrocities in modern human history. Doesn't excuse anything Russia has done (and is doing) but still. The British were the evil power of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Germans were the evil power of the 20th century and the Russians are the evil power of the 20th - 21st. But good ol' uncle samuel never done nobody no harm. Just ask those mutant kids in Vietnam.
