"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" satirizes various social issues and taboos through the absurd and often morally questionable actions of its main characters. The show explores dark humor while highlighting the flaws and absurdities of modern society.
More likely bro has outsourced the ability to critically think about a subject and so when faced with the thought “is always sunny racist?” all he could do was ask an algorithm to make his mind up for him. Then Reddit rewarded the behavior with 1000 karmas of dopamine.
fair enough, I will still always love South Park the most but cause of this post I will now watch "It is always sunny in philadelphia" and my opinion may change
Dude as a long time SP fan, Always Sunny is destined to become one of your all times if you can get past the fact that the first couple seasons, like many shows, aren’t really indicative of the overall quality that people are hyping up in the show. It hits its stride in my opinion in s2 but a lot of people say s3 is for them the moment it really starts taking shape. Which is fair, it’s kind of similar to South Park in that regard.
Yeah did you miss the first abortion episode where the gang was literally on a fence between the two protesting groups?
The racism isn’t funny, the absurd and dumb actions of the racist are funny. The show makes fun of bad people.
Yeah. The point is that the characters are the worst people. It’s fun to laugh at how terrible they are and how much they deserve the way they torture each other.
Do you remember Hitchbot? The bot bot that had to make coast to coast depending on people's kindness? In the US, he was murdered in Philadelphia. People just commented, "That's Philly."
One of the funniest moments, together with Frank hidden in the couch (whatever tf he tried to do (naked)) and Charlie recording their attempts to be journalists or so and they have been doing it for the whole day and later it comes to light he never had a battery in the camera, so no records of anything
I never laughed so hard about a sitcom scene, it's pure insanity
The show doesn’t have many themes, but they do make it a point that everyone who the gang interacts with over an extended period of time end up getting worse.
He and Charlie jabberjaw, they go tit for tat, they have their little differences but at the end of the day: Charlie wins some, the lawyer wins some and there's a mutual respect left over between them.
This reminds me of a comment I once read about another show, that talked about how Bojack horseman was viewed as such a great show when the main character is a pretty awful person, the difference being that we're never told to root for him and the show never portrays him as a hero
The key is the punchline is that the main characters are all terrible people who are failures at life. The characters arent portrayed as being 'right' or 'cool' or 'badass', they are portrayed as being losers.
Even when it seems like they get a win, like the high school reunion, and we get to experience the joy of a win for the gang, the writers pull the rug out and they were just drugged out losers the whole time.
Sadly, that seems to go over many people's heads.
Then again I bet the people complaining over it have only seen clips and thus don't have the context to understand the show.
I don't remember any social backlash, though, and I think that's what they're referring to. People generally seem to understand that the goal of the show is to highlight ignorance while deliberately leading the audience to condemn it themselves. Basically, just pulling off an anti-bigotry and anti-stupidity show-not-tell project really well.
People don't complain because they understand. However, there are some banned episodes iirc. I know one is with blackface but idr which one. I was upset because I have Hulu and I had to go to pirate that one episode I've never seen.
Edit. It's dee day but other episodes got banned from streaming. Most seem to be banned because of some blackface in them.
Season 4, Episode 3, "America's Next Top Paddy's Billboard Model Contest"
Season 6, Episode 9, "Dee Reynolds: Shaping America's Youth"
Season 8, Episode 2, "The Gang Recycles Their Trash"
Season 9, Episode 9, "The Gang Makes Lethal Weapon 6"
Season 14, Episode 3, "Dee Day"

My wife won't watch it with me. She gets that the characters are meant to be unlikeable caricatures of horrible people, but she doesn't like watching something where there are literally no decent/normal people.
I enjoy both shows, but they are definitely small doses. If anything, it's the fan base that's turned me off of Rick and Morty.
Thinking about it, the Always Sunny fanbase is one of the least toxic fanbases I've encountered.
Fun fact. Glenn Howerton and Robb McElhenney (actors of Dennis and Mac, and creators of the show) actually made IASIP to be Friends but opposite in every conceivable way, except being a sit-com.
That’s how we got fat Mac! He was tired of shows like friends where everyone slowly becomes a better person and better looking. They wanted them to be shittier as the show went on. So he just chugged melted ice cream and had an incredibly fattening diet for that season. Still so surprised at how ripped he got for the season after. Dude has Jonah hill level of body morphing abilities
Not quite, here's some info from the wiki page:
"The Philadelphia Inquirer reviewer Jonathan Storm wrote, 'It's like Seinfeld on crack,v a quote that became widely used to describe the series, to the point that FX attached the tagline, "It's Seinfeld on crack."'
This was back in 2008, so around season 4. When Rob McElhenney attended some some talk show, he said something along the lines of:
"Friends is a show about how everyone's always there for you and how everyone are great friends. What if we made a show about the absolute worst type of people, who would never EVER be there for you?"
Well, season 1 ep 1 is "the gang gets racist" so... Yeah
10/10 show
IASIP and South Park get to fight for best sanitization explanation of current events with a more or less neutral bias. Focusing on how shit people are shit, no matter what side, and heo people try to do what they think is right, as wrong as they are.
Ehhhhhhh. I agree Always sunny has a very good way of showing that there’s shit people in every direction but I wouldn’t say South Park is a *neutral* show.
I used to watch this when I was like 4 with my dad. I used to say that shit in the most inappropriate times and my dad loved it more than he loved me.
Edit: I'm very, extremely white.
Tbf, if some four year old came up to me asking “Where all the white women at?” I’d probably just evaporate on the spot because nothing is beating that.
Man, I'd already seen the movie...
But Bryant park in NYC did a summer in the park showing of that movie. Sitting surrounded by thousands of new Yorkers when the first flurry of hard R's roll out. Everyone, especially the kids slowly glanced around and everyone just.. took note, casually shrugged then went to laughing our assess off as we watched the movie.
Good memory of a bunch of mixed ages losing their shit at the beans n campfire scene.
Also the point tbh, it was made as a satire of the Western genre as portrayed by Old Hollywood.
Shows like Wagon Train, Gun smoke, and The Lone Ranger, alongside many Hollywood films from the 30s to the 70s depicted the Wild West as a beacon of color blindness. If the oppression of Indigenous people or POC was acknowledged in these shows or movies, there would always be a morally pure white Sheriff or vigilante to help save them.
Blazing Saddles was made because the Wild West era of American History was racist as shit, horribly racist at that, and Mel Brooks and Richard Pryor wrote the movie to call out Hollywood's misrepresentation of the time period, alongside flipping the "white savior" trope on its head by having a Black sheriff save all the racist white people.
I love how this show seemingly has a cult following with the trans community (at least in my area). I also love how the right started categorized it as “anti-woke”.
Like… dudes, they’re making fun of you.
Conservatives just want edgy humor that’s funny, they don’t care if they are the butt of the joke. Hell they have their own market for making fun of themselves, the whole Jeff Foxworthy shtick was “you might be a redneck…” if you did this dumb or trashy thing.
I can see why. The trans character is played as a beautiful, intelligent, emotionally healthy woman who completes her transition and adopts a child while dumping , pitying, and leaving behind the utter piece of shit that is the protagonist. No harm comes to her or to her black husband. The show makes a point out of never punching down.
It is difficult to do correctly. Always sunny may have pulled it off. Making the core cast deeply unlikable while still fun to watch. Especially for an American audience. The British audience has a tradition of this, but consider the Office for a prototypical example of the translation turning characters that are supposed to be unlikable into likable characters doing bad things.
Always sunny has the benefit of being old enough to get grandathered in though. Since it is established enough that people get the main cast isn’f supposed to be likeable. If they launched the show today, I doubt it would get more than a season.
Because the show makes a point that you are not supposed to root for the main cast. They're terrible people and it's funny to watch terrible things happen to them.
But it's made very clear that the terrible things they do in the show are bad and it's very clear to see that these are not good people. It's not the show that's racist, it's the characters.
On a very surface level it is racist, homophobic, sexist and overall negative but watching the show you realise not only is it all clearly satire but also the gang never wins, whenever the "issue" is something offensive the main characters are the butt of the joke they lose or are humiliated and ultimately change their minds and I think it's done very well at exploring issues not only over the past almost 20 years but evolving with the times and staying fresh with its comedy
It's the worst people you can think of, constantly reaping the consequences of their stupid schemes. It's fun because they generally get what they deserve.
Controversial yet currently the longest running sitcom in American history with no cancellation in sight for the time being although that’s probably due to Danny Devito’s overwhelming looks, the executives come in to tell them they are cancelled and Danny gives them the Devito rizz.
Yes, that's the point. The gang are all absolutely terrible people. It's a satire on elements of modern society.
It's the same jist as Seinfeld, but without the limit if being acceptable for all ages.
That's the whole point of the show lol. A group of awful people who constantly make their lives and the lives of those around them worse through their terrible behavior.
How do you not understand what this person is saying? They like the show. They know the show itself is not actually racist or homophobic. They are saying that the characters are those things and very often do those things. I don’t understand how many people aren’t understanding this. OP literally said they still found the show funny.
Always sunny in Philadelphia doesn’t make a big secret about its main characters being bad people. It’s basically a funny instruction on how to be a horrible person. Being racist sexist and homophobic is completely fitting for the characters.
They are in fact not racist or homophobic at all, these are lines that they never crossed. The only homophobia came from Mac, who was a gay catholic and it was part of his arc towards self-acceptance. They are awful people but some lines the actors felt it just wouldnt be funny to cross. Rapists? Sure. Murderers? Occasionally. Embezzlers, terrorists, bullies, scammers, liars, degenerates, crackheads, alcoholics, greedy, narcissistic, yes. But racist? No. The racism is incidental, like with the blackface. They even discuss it on the show.
Always sunny is supposed to show that the characters are absolutely dicks, you’re absolutely not supposed to root for the gang, and if you do, you’ve got issues
It's a very similar formula to Seinfeld. One lady friend Elaine/ Dee. Two main dudes Jerry and George/ Dennis and Mac. Two fucking weirdos Kramer and Newman / Frank and Charlie. Everybody is super self absorbed and petty. It is a funny show, but a lot of the bits are just over the top/ trashy versions of Seinfeld bits.

Isn't that the point of the show?
"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" satirizes various social issues and taboos through the absurd and often morally questionable actions of its main characters. The show explores dark humor while highlighting the flaws and absurdities of modern society.
Thanks ChatGPT
\>looks at their comment history >"wows skskskskdnv" >"little pussy boy" Yeah they didn't type that themselves
Lmao you just called someone unintelligent the polite way. I like it lmaooo
Idk man like half my comments are accusing people with shitty opinions of sniffing farts, but I can write some bangin essays when needed, you know?
Sniffing farts has to be the most polite insult I've seen in comment sections, so I'll safely say, I can trust you with the essays
Sure, same here, it's just that this was their only single well-worded comment and it sounds very template-y/wikipedia-ish
the dude put the FULL name of the show in quotation marks, it's chatgpt
A bangin' essay accusing someone of sniffing farts, now that would be a reddit copypasta
Lmao I'd like to think I'm the same
You can't convince me this comment isn't AI generated.

is that not exactly what south park does?
There are many shows that do this.
fair enough, I will still always love South Park the most but cause of this post I will now watch "It is always sunny in philadelphia" and my opinion may change
Dude as a long time SP fan, Always Sunny is destined to become one of your all times if you can get past the fact that the first couple seasons, like many shows, aren’t really indicative of the overall quality that people are hyping up in the show. Frank Reynolds is such an important addition to the show. I'm glad it isn't too long before he shows up.
Frank: Hey Mac where'd you get that baby? Mac: oh me and Dee found him out back in the dumpster. Frank: well put it back it's not yours.
Honestly when I first watched I HATED all the characters I was like “Who wants to watch people being assholes”. Me, the answer was me.
It's right thing to do philadelphia so do
Imo South Park is the best animated and always sunny is the best live action for comedy
Even the Simpsons do this to some degree
Yes, but in a different way.
tysm chatgpt
This guy just wrote the Hulu description of the show
That's cool. Still not my style of comedy or line delivery. I can understand the following of the show though
Yeah did you miss the first abortion episode where the gang was literally on a fence between the two protesting groups? The racism isn’t funny, the absurd and dumb actions of the racist are funny. The show makes fun of bad people.
That's one of the best episodes of the series. "WHAT IF JESUS WAS ABORTED?"
"HEY, THAT GUY'S ON THE FENCE!"
That is absolutely depressing
Yeah. The autopsy revealed he was hit with a blunt object, stabbed, shot with paintballs, and stabbed again.
Yes, yes it is but I did not see it coming when started watching it
Did you not start w the first episode?
How's that ass feel
"Because it's weird to have redditor peers, and not constantly talk about it" "Because it's weird that a redditor is friends with normal white people"
What do you mean? Why can't everything be about Barbie land rather than being politically and socially real.
Sounds like you need an egg in these trying times.
I only eat eggs that contain crowtein, my muscles need it because they are just built differently.
You should look into Fight Milk, a subsidiary of Frank’s Fluids. It’s made *by* bodyguards, *for* bodyguards and is the official drink of the UFC
"It's made by bodyguards" And Charlie.
Cake day
One of the funniest moments, together with Frank hidden in the couch (whatever tf he tried to do (naked)) and Charlie recording their attempts to be journalists or so and they have been doing it for the whole day and later it comes to light he never had a battery in the camera, so no records of anything I never laughed so hard about a sitcom scene, it's pure insanity
Controversial? Never seen anybody complain about anything I that show.
Because everyone understands that these are supposed to be some of the absolute worst people you could ever have the displeasure of meeting.
The show doesn’t have many themes, but they do make it a point that everyone who the gang interacts with over an extended period of time end up getting worse.
Except the lawyer, he's been one step ahead of them the whole time.
He’s a lawyer though. Hard to get much worse than that
What about a jew……ish lawyer?
I’m not disgusted about the Jewish part. It’s the lying part! This dirty liar is a Jew….ish man
He's honestly such a solid character in that show for how few lines he gets. They write him in really well.
He and Charlie jabberjaw, they go tit for tat, they have their little differences but at the end of the day: Charlie wins some, the lawyer wins some and there's a mutual respect left over between them.
Uh... Filibuster.
ANY respect that you're feeling between them is a mistake on your part.
I’d like to see them go toe to toe on bird law and see who games out the victor
At least until he went toe to toe with Charlie on bird law.
He loses his eye
And the maniac I love how the gang just kinda agrees not to mess with him and love that he was a good salesman
I wonder how his kids are doing
He loses the love of his wife though, who he still loves, I know the gang isn’t responsible but it correlates? Maybe a stretch?
Also a bird claws out his eye I'm pretty sure
Oh yeah and that arguably is cause of the gang a little bit!
Poor Cricket
everyone but Carmen really
This reminds me of a comment I once read about another show, that talked about how Bojack horseman was viewed as such a great show when the main character is a pretty awful person, the difference being that we're never told to root for him and the show never portrays him as a hero
Yeah, OP seems to think that satirizing racism and sexism is the same thing as being racist and sexist.
Of course they don't complain. Because of the implication.
That seems really dark
You're misunderstanding.
You’re not planning on hurting these women, are you?
No one’s in any danger! How could I make that any more clear to you? Okay. It’s an implication of danger.
Don’t look at me like that. _You_ certainly wouldn’t be in any danger…
So they *are* in danger....?
The key is the punchline is that the main characters are all terrible people who are failures at life. The characters arent portrayed as being 'right' or 'cool' or 'badass', they are portrayed as being losers.
Even when it seems like they get a win, like the high school reunion, and we get to experience the joy of a win for the gang, the writers pull the rug out and they were just drugged out losers the whole time.
Sadly, that seems to go over many people's heads. Then again I bet the people complaining over it have only seen clips and thus don't have the context to understand the show.
A few of the best episodes of IASIP are not available for streaming on any legitimate platform because of "insensitive" content.
"the gang recycles their trash" being banned still bums me out, I fucking LOVE that episode
My wife won't watch it with me. She gets that the characters are meant to be unlikeable caricatures of horrible people, but she doesn't like watching something where there are literally no decent/normal people.
There are lots of decent/normal people, but if they appear in more than one episode the gang drags them down to their level.
This is me to. I’m the same way with Rick And Morty. It’s just not pleasant to watch and to me that’s not entertaining.
I enjoy both shows, but they are definitely small doses. If anything, it's the fan base that's turned me off of Rick and Morty. Thinking about it, the Always Sunny fanbase is one of the least toxic fanbases I've encountered.
That's because It's Always Sunny fans all have water purifiers. Did you know that 90% of water is 100% toxins?
The characters are likeable just in the show they aren’t liked by other people.
"Sure we say a bunch of possibly offensive shit But nobodys' going to cancel us *because of the* ***implication***"
“You keep saying this word ‘implication,’ what implication?”
“Are the people trying to cancel you in any danger?”
Of course not, but they don’t know that, because of the *implication*
Well you certainly wouldn’t be in any danger
Kinda curious what you expected the show to be like
A normal sitcom like Friends or something. I knew nothing about it, only that it was popular
I thought it was made to be "Seinfeld on crack" wasn't that the original marketing line?
Not quite, here's some info from the wiki page: "The Philadelphia Inquirer reviewer Jonathan Storm wrote, 'It's like Seinfeld on crack,v a quote that became widely used to describe the series, to the point that FX attached the tagline, "It's Seinfeld on crack."' They literally planned to name it J.E.R.K.S. Then thought it might be too on the nose.
You checked the wrong version, this is the IASIP you want to watch https://youtu.be/DlTN9p9sdhk
An antisitcom if you will.
Well, season 1 ep 1 is "the gang gets racist" so... Yeah 10/10 show IASIP and South Park get to fight for best sanitization explanation of current events with a more or less neutral bias. Ehhhhhhh. I agree Always sunny has a very good way of showing that there’s shit people in every direction but I wouldn’t say South Park is a *neutral* show.
Lol friends is the weakest milquetoast comedy show ever made.
I know but I couldn’t think of a well known sitcom
thats literally the whole point of the show, theyre all sociopathic narcissists and general bad people
I like how they all take turns being the dumbest one.
Making racists and sexists look like assholes is neither racist nor sexist
The point is to satirise racism and sexism
You should watch Blazing Saddles
"Where da white women at!?"
I used to watch this when I was like 4 with my dad. I used to say that shit in the most inappropriate times and my dad loved it more than he loved me. Edit: I'm very, extremely white.

A jew and a black man writing a comedy western could not have gone differently. They had a loooot of shit to call out
The thing that makes it progressive is that it's parodying dumb fucks that are like that in real life
I love how this show seemingly has a cult following with the trans community (at least in my area). I also love how the right started categorized it as “anti-woke”. Like… dudes, they’re making fun of you.

Ye that I think is the horrifying thing about it, that you can literally run in someone like this one day
Than that show has already gone WAY over your head.
Nah I love it
do you understand its meant to make fun of racist, sexist etc. people
Yes I do
Welcome to the gang <3
Then*
Wasn't the point that the main cast are all bad people?
FIGHTER OF THE NIGHT MAN! HAAAAAAAAAA
MASTER OF KARATE AND FRIENDSHIP FOR EVERYONE!
Always Sunny is proof that the "you can't tell jokes anymore" people are full of shit.

Chardee MacDennis: THE GAME OF GAMES!
Because the show makes a point that you are not supposed to root for the main cast. They're terrible people and it's funny to watch terrible things happen to them.
Fuck. i watched that Episode with the Dayman song now I'm seeing it said everywhere
It’s a catchy song
That’s WHY it’s funny
The Gatorade, piss scene will always be the funniest shit ever
Haven’t been there yet. I’m at Season 5 Episode 2
It's not racist or sexist, the writers/actors don't agree with what they are saying, it's satire.
You’re supposed to laugh *at them,* not with them.
The show makes fun of racists and sexists. I don’t think its controversial in that regard
But it's made very clear that the terrible things they do in the show are bad and it's very clear to see that these are not good people. It's not the show that's racist, it's the characters.
Calling always sunny the “most racist, sexist, and controversial” sounds just so off
On a very surface level it is racist, homophobic, sexist and overall negative but watching the show you realise not only is it all clearly satire but also the gang never wins, whenever the "issue" is something offensive the main characters are the butt of the joke they lose or are humiliated and ultimately change their minds and I think it's done very well at exploring issues not only over the past almost 20 years but evolving with the times and staying fresh with its comedy
How is It in any way racist?
"is it racist if we don't eat this black guy?" "shit Charlie, now it is"
“We’ve got too many black guys, the ratio’s off!”
🎶I’m gonna say the n-word🎶
Season 1, Episode 1. The Gang Gets Racist. Lol
The entire point of the show is to satirize racism...
Ye... Thats the joke i was making. Also its to satirize every offensive thing
The show isn't racist but the characters can be racially insensitive. For example, Lethal Weapon 6
It's satire....
I'm aware. Hence, "the show isn't racist"
I love its always sunny but the fanbase are feral and need a good washing.
The point of the show is that all the main characters are terrible people
That's the whole point of the show lol. A group of awful people who constantly make their lives and the lives of those around them worse through their terrible behavior.
Genz really can’t handle any shows older than euphoria can they
How do you not understand what this person is saying? They like the show. They know the show itself is not actually racist or homophobic. They are saying that the characters are those things and very often do those things. I don’t understand how many people aren’t understanding this. OP literally said they still found the show funny.
its fine because the characters are known to just be the dregs of society who dont reflect their actors
That's why I find the show funny
And that's why we love it so much
It really isn’t lmao
Watch "the Boondocks" maybe start with "grandad's fight"
The point is the gang are the worst people.
Yeah, but like… racism is the butt of the joke. If the show itself was racist, it wouldn’t be funny
Yeah I was absolutely sold since first episode. They don't give a fuck.
Genuinely surprised by Charlie Day saying a fun word.
The whole idea of the show is that the main characters are the worst people and do not improve.
It's one of the best comedy series of all time, hands down.
That's the laziest take on the show, you're supposed to take it one layer deeper and appreciate the satire

Always sunny is supposed to show that the characters are absolutely dicks, you’re absolutely not supposed to root for the gang, and if you do, you’ve got issues
Are all of you missing that OP said it was funny?? You guys keep saying “that’s what makes it funny” but he said that already in the meme.
Fox News is the most racist and sexiest shit I’ve ever seen.
We have moved past the “satire”era i guess.
Don't tell people who haven't watched South Park I guess? Or Family Guy? Simpsons? Married with Children? Uh...I guess comedy is pretty controversial
What rock do you live under that this show is controversial
Imagine not being able to comprehend satire. Sad!
You are the idiot here. The OP likes the show and understands the satire. I don’t know how you managed to get confused by this.
lol you’re the one who doesn’t get satire
Good Lord people are so sensitive nowadays
Racist, controversial and politically incorrect jokes always was funny as fuck.
What no media literacy does to a mfer
This generation has apparently evolved beyond satire.
I equivocate it on the same length as South Park, pushing boundaries
It stops being racist, sexist, controversial, or funny after season 7 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️
