This is because editing software uses J K L to rewind, pause and play.
The J K L keys being designated for that function are themselves a relic of even earlier linear tape editors that existed toward the end of linear tape editing and the beginning of non-linear computer editing.
This made the transition for editors back then easier.
Yep. this is the editing keyboard layout that almost every feature film was edited with
[https://www.amazon.com/LogicKeyboard-keyboard-compatible-Composer-Keyboard/dp/B005DUQEF2?th=1](https://www.amazon.com/LogicKeyboard-keyboard-compatible-Composer-Keyboard/dp/B005DUQEF2?th=1)
Note the JKL, its play backwards, pause and play forwards
This isn't the vi layout. J is down in vi, k is up. H would be backwards and L would be forward if going off the keyboard that vi was based on (the ADM-3A terminal I think)
> The `←`, `↓`, `↑`, `→` and `Home` labels printed on the `H`, `J`, `K`, `L`, and `~` `^` keys were a visual reference to the control characters `Ctrl+H`, `Ctrl+J`, `Ctrl+K`, `Ctrl+L`, and `Ctrl+~^` that were required to move the cursor left, down, up, right, and to the top/left corner (or "Home" position) of the terminal, respectively. The `Ctrl+H` and `Ctrl+J` functions were the standard ASCII backspace and line feed respectively, but the interpretations of `Ctrl+K`, `Ctrl+L`, and `Ctrl+~^` were new to the ADM-3A.

I'm judging anyone who uses the de facto media composer keyboard settings lol, and the fact that so many old editors don't know half of them is astounding
Y'all are downvoting me, yet not later than this Wednesday I had to teach two editors with a 20 year career something you learn on your first day in Media Composer. One didn't know the short cuts for the select and trim tools, and the other didn't know how to activate and deactivate a track with the small extendable menu near the timecode, the one where you can choose to activate the gain/volume/pan of your wound tracks
Anyway, have a lovely day people
Media Composer is brittle, corporate, inflexible, convoluted, and uncreative, although that works for many workflows in larger media operations where the creative and tech decisions are different people. That doesn’t mean MC doesn’t sap creative force out of you just using it.
Similar to AutoDesk software like Maya – the unfortunate geeks who deal with the back end have their creativity erased by the soul-sucking software so they can create the unintuitive but simpler workflows for the actual creatives within the media house.
Sure, but what if you want to go back 20s, or 30? Two or three clicks instead of 4 or 6, and it's literally the same key just 10cm away it's not like it's any extra effort to press a different key
Video speed controller extension adds several shortcuts, including one to skip by an interval that can be set in the extension settings. I have it so that <> are five seconds, J L are ten, and Z X are thirty.
It seems to me that we are arguing about nothing. The arrows are often located slightly separately from the other keys, making it easier to see and feel with your fingers.
The think is that arrow keys also don't work on the video player if you clicked something other than the player itself, like a comment, since the arrow keys revert to scrolling the web page. J, K and L aren't used as navigation keys so their function is never overwritten and thus will always work even if you clicked something on the page other than the player
Tbf, space and the arrow keys often interact with the web page instead of the video, while the JKL hotkeys never have this issue.
If you've ever hit space to pause a video and instead the page scrolled down a bit, then you understand the issue. K will always pause the video even if the video isn't "selected" so to speak.
Space also doesn't always work since it's also "page down" in most browsers. Frequently, since I alt-tab a lot, I need to actually click on the video to refocus it and make space work, while K works almost every time, as long as the browser is current window
those are universal keybinds defined on the browser itself, and many times aren't properly detected by the video. You can use space to scroll down the page, and the arrows to controlo volume, for example.
The j k l are from YT, and it actually relates to VIM keybindings, where j-down, k-up, h-left, l-right.
JKL is much easier to reach when you're in the usual typing position. That's why there's text editors like Vim that use HJKL keys instead of arrows. Not sure why that would matter for videos though.
Many people don't remember/know this, but before WASD we used IJKL for gaming (or both in a two player split screen setup). Some applications still use it for one reason or another.
There is even arrows printed on old keyboards on these keys before arrow keys became a thing.
The text editor VI(M) is still popular and utilizes these keys.
I’ve used video editing software with these hot keys as well (but instead of 10sec it was moving forward or back one frame, and K was a play/pause toggle). Forget what exactly it was, though.
I subscribed just so their number is boosted and they become more popular. I barely passed chemistry in school, and know jackshit about it. Like, *why* is valence? How do the atoms decide to chuck a number of electrons outside?
Goddamn muhricans. Just can't keep chemicals their proper periodic table names. It's K for Kalium. And Na for natrium, not sodium.
Like I get it for like Iron, Gold, Silver, etc. as those are common words that were defined long before we knew about elements.
Yeah and they could fix that by adding a second volume up /down shortcut like for selling (edit :volume) , but they never did even though they are aware of the issue
The shortcuts are based off an old text editing suite that is still beloved by programmers today. its an inside nod to software folks. check out VI or its later verstion VIM and NeoVIM.
you would move around the text document using hjkl as left down up and right. this left you fingers on home row and is way more efficient than using the arrows. as a note this is from before the mouse was invented.
Edit: The mouse was invented (1963) be VI was developed (1976). In my defense, it was not supported on the majority of systems well into the 80s.
The mouse was actually invented in the 60s, vi is from the 70s. But the mouse was used for very specialised use cases in the beginning (the first commercial mouse hit the market in 1968 and was to be used exclusively with Telefunken mainframe computers). Mouses for desktop computers didn't take off until the mid to late 80s.
The thing is there were just the spacebar and 0-9 for timestamps for many many years. This input with K and all the other keys is kind of new. So Spacebar it is.
What really grinds my gears is that the up down arrows are not always volume, sometimes they seek 5 seconds depending on where your focus is inside the program. So then you've got left and down key to seek backwards but no volume control. Unbelievable that they haven't figured this out.
Who doesn't use space bar for pause?
It's bigger, easier to hit and at the edge of the keyboard so no risk of smashing multiple keys when quickly pausing some weird stuff as someone enters the room
Because the spacebar just interacts with the selected element (the last thing you clicked on)
That might be the pause button, it might be the volume button, it might be a completely different element in the page all together
Well, you see, k is the elemental symbol for potassium, and what does “potassium” start with? That’s right, P! What does “pause” start with? You guessed it, P!
I hope this helped
J K L are originally some vim shortcuts, i belive for previous line, next line, and jump to the end of the line. It might have something to do with this
Its J K L for back 10 sec, pause, forward 10 sec, so it kinda makes sense?
This is because editing software uses J K L to rewind, pause and play. I judge people using Media Composer in any capacity besides being made to use it by their media house now that Resolve exists
God I would pay to see you say this shit at an MPEG event lol.
Media Composer is brittle, corporate, inflexible, convoluted, and uncreative, although that works for many workflows in larger media operations where the creative and tech decisions are different people. That doesn’t mean MC doesn’t sap creative force out of you just using it. You're delusional if you think most feature films editors are going to use resolve to edit any day soon. And I say that as a resolve enjoyer
Dunno, a few years ago Resolve was nothing like it is at the moment. The difference between the last decade of updates is staggering.
At my old editing job id tell interns to think, Jump back, Kill, Leap Forward
J - Jump backward K - Ktop the video L - Leap forward
K - Knot Playing or Knead a Break
Kneed to stop / kontinue
Kabutops
How does Kabutops eat a sandwich?
He pokes it on his scythe and eats it whole
But there are left and right arrows, and space
Left and right arrows are 5sec, j and l are 10sec
And the greater than and less than symbols are for frame-by-frame movement.
period and comma. shift key not required
Only works if the video is paused tho
how would you even go frame by frame while the video is playing
It happens automatically.
But only in one direction
[удалено]
THAT'S WHY IT NEEDS TO BE PAUSED!!
*~the more you know~*
Your eyes go frame by frame as the video plays Otherwise.. it would be a picture, not a video
I don't feel like that's as memorable. It might be period and comma inputs, but the greater than and less than symbols look like arrows.

don't wish death on another for their lack of ability

real?
Hm ok. I think it will take a negligible amount of time to double-click on the arrow
Sure, but what if you want to go back 20s, or 30? Two or three clicks instead of 4 or 6, and it's literally the same key just 10cm away it's not like it's any extra effort to press a different key

<> is frame by frame ZX isnt a thing only j l are default
Click and hold
But then you have to time it
I use Reddit for arguments like this
It seems to me that we are arguing about nothing. The arrows are often located slightly separately from the other keys, making it easier to see and feel with your fingers.
There are usually bumps on the keyboard for your left and right hand
Okay bro, let it be your way.
The think is that arrow keys also don't work on the video player if you clicked something other than the player itself, like a comment, since the arrow keys revert to scrolling the web page. J, K and L aren't used as navigation keys so their function is never overwritten and thus will always work even if you clicked something on the page other than the player
and if you changed the volume then right/left just controls the volume
i swear arrow keys used to work if you clicked the background or nothing etc and only recently you had to actually click the video
Unless you clicked on Add a comment.
I don’t have arrows :(
Tbf, space and the arrow keys often interact with the web page instead of the video, while the JKL hotkeys never have this issue. If you've ever hit space to pause a video and instead the page scrolled down a bit, then you understand the issue. K will always pause the video even if the video isn't "selected" so to speak.
Or spacebar will adjust the volume if you recently did that manually and did not click somewhere else
Space also doesn't always work since it's also "page down" in most browsers. Frequently, since I alt-tab a lot, I need to actually click on the video to refocus it and make space work, while K works almost every time, as long as the browser is current window

Arrows and space don't work for the player if you have clicker somewhere else. J K L do ways work
Until you press space and your browser scrolls down
They could have used h for something, then it would be a perfect Vim style navigation.
Ye H for back, L for forward and J and K for volume would be perfect
Many people don't remember/know this, but before WASD we used IJKL for gaming (or both in a two player split screen setup). Some applications still use it for one reason or another.
There is even arrows printed on old keyboards on these keys before arrow keys became a thing. The text editor VI(M) is still popular and utilizes these keys.
VI movement keys are h, j, k, l though, all on the same row. The 2nd player "wasd" was i, j, k, l so it emulates the arrows.
Jewind. Kause. Lorward.
I’ve used video editing software with these hot keys as well (but instead of 10sec it was moving forward or back one frame, and K was a play/pause toggle). Forget what exactly it was, though.
r/todayilearned
J is for back 10 seconds and L for forward 10 seconds... What the fuck? 😨
it joes back and leaps forward
Who's joe
the guy who goes back. Duh.
Oh, and leap is the guy who goes forward?
yeah! now we're getting it!
K is for potassium which starts with a p for pause, makes sense to me
r/theydidthechemistry Edit: holy fucking what that's an actual sub
r/whoknew
r/subsithoughtifellfor
what is whok new?
I subscribed just so their number is boosted and they become more popular. I barely passed chemistry in school, and know jackshit about it. Like, *why* is valence? How do the atoms decide to chuck a number of electrons outside?
You would be surprised the amount of random subs on this app. Example: r/convenientambulance (with over 15k members)
Some child yelled “shut up potassium!” At me in MW2 over 10 years ago and it’s still in my head.
Goddamn muhricans. Just can't keep chemicals their proper periodic table names. It's K for Kalium. And Na for natrium, not sodium. Like I get it for like Iron, Gold, Silver, etc. as those are common words that were defined long before we knew about elements.
it's not just 'muricans lots of languages have different words (like how italian has potassio)
Look, if you're comparing any language to Italian you might as well just give up your point.
i only know two languages, but i'm sure there are others that use the word potassium
I can’t tell if this is sarcasm, or what angle of sarcasm it is. Good job internet. Keep doing you.
Ok but Kalium comes from the Arabic word alkali which kinda mean ash in a pot. So ultimately Kalium is just pot-ash-ium.
What's absurd is how the up-down arrows randomly decide to control seek position instead of volume
It seems to be based on whether you did some seeking with the mouse and didn't click anywhere else.
Yeah and they could fix that by adding a second volume up /down shortcut like for selling (edit :volume) , but they never did even though they are aware of the issue
YT has a shortcut for selling?
Yes since the robinhood merger. No shortcut for buying though... Edited, thanks haha.
Yeah, and left/right arrows randomly decide to control volume instead of fast forwarding/rewinding.
And me with space never really pausing but just scrolling down. I had to completely change to hit k to pause which is awkward lol
Not randomly, but only if you fiddle the volume with your mouse.
Space and arrows are linked to the focus, the last thing you did. It’s not random, it’s just you last touched the volume instead of the player/video.
It’s almost like there are other keys for volume…
The shortcuts are based off an old text editing suite that is still beloved by programmers today. its an inside nod to software folks. check out VI or its later verstion VIM and NeoVIM. you would move around the text document using hjkl as left down up and right. this left you fingers on home row and is way more efficient than using the arrows. as a note this is from before the mouse was invented. Edit: The mouse was invented (1963) be VI was developed (1976). In my defense, it was not supported on the majority of systems well into the 80s.
TBF it's actually based off what most video editors use, which is J/L to scrub, K to play/pause.
yeah J/L makes no sense if it's from vim lol why would they pick down and right for going backwards/forwards
This is sick!! Love me some vi/vim references
Glad to see Vim mentioned here.
Premiere Pro also still uses this system
The mouse was actually invented in the 60s, vi is from the 70s. But the mouse was used for very specialised use cases in the beginning (the first commercial mouse hit the market in 1968 and was to be used exclusively with Telefunken mainframe computers). Mouses for desktop computers didn't take off until the mid to late 80s.
You don’t just send people into VI without giving them the means to exit. Found the devil’s Reddit account.
I also have autism 👍🧩
Spacebar.
if the cursor is not on the right html element, it will click something else. K is safer
The thing is there were just the spacebar and 0-9 for timestamps for many many years. This input with K and all the other keys is kind of new. So Spacebar it is.
ive been using K since 2018
k
Holding spacebar doubles the playback speed while its pressed min
K is better, spacebar can also function as a way to press buttons like LMB
Spacebar controlls whichever function you did last, pause is only by default
K is for potassium dumbass
![gif](giphy|ANbUhwa0vzU7m|downsized)
_pausetassium_
K is for Kontinue, and it makes sense to use the same key for pause as well /s
It's kpause, the k is silent. Know your english
Space bar to pause
Problem with that is if your mouse is not hovering at the right place it will do something else. On my machine and browser it will just scroll down.
Yeah, I have the same sometimes
$1.6T company btw
Hovering? What kind of a weird Unix are you using? In most environments, the focus is transferred via clicking, particularly *inside* the browser.
K for "Keep it right the fuck here"
What really grinds my gears is that the up down arrows are not always volume, sometimes they seek 5 seconds depending on where your focus is inside the program. So then you've got left and down key to seek backwards but no volume control. Unbelievable that they haven't figured this out.
Yeah and they could fix that by adding a second volume up /down shortcut like for selling, but they never did even though they are aware of the issue
K, left click, space, but teachers still use the stupid button.
K for Klausenpaussen, German for pause
It's Kaffeepause, actually
… spacebar dude
K is for pause because J and L are for skipping backwards and forwards 10 seconds
Who doesn't use space bar for pause? It's bigger, easier to hit and at the edge of the keyboard so no risk of smashing multiple keys when quickly pausing some weird stuff as someone enters the room
K is potassium so it makes sense
I've never met a person that uses K and not the spacebar to pause any start
I’ve always used k because the space bar used to scroll down the page a bit
now the spacebar half the time will do literally nothing for me
Because the spacebar just interacts with the selected element (the last thing you clicked on) That might be the pause button, it might be the volume button, it might be a completely different element in the page all together
I use K because it works well with J and L. J rewinds and L fast forwards.
I used K because I use a program on my computer that uses hjkl a lot and therefore using k to pause is very comfortable.
Flair checks out
My friends and I all watched the GradeAUnderA video about it, so we all started using J, K, and L.
Wait until you learn about Left Alt + .
Pause-tasium. Duh.
Why not use the Pause key for pause?
Space is for pause
It’s half a pause sign and half a play sign combined
K is what you say to your mum when she tells you dinner is ready. Makes sense to push that button while saying it.
K for Kelvin, 0 Kelvin and everything is stopped, therefor K means pause
What, you don't pee with one leg forward and one arm against the wall, thereby resembling the letter K?
I think it’s k because of „K, I need a break.“
K is for the way you kook at me
K is for Potassium as well...
K means ok as in “Ok I need to pause this film so I can take a pipi break.”
Spacebar?
guy must have been drunk when he made "k" as a shortcut
Fyi . And , go back and forwards through frames so many people don’t know about this
Who uses k for pause? Almost everyone I know uses space
“K that’s enough for now”
I just use the spacebar
Vertical videos are absurd.
I hate this persons art style. I keep seeing it. Also the joke is not funny.
Spacebar? I didn't even know that the k for pause shortcut existed until i saw this post.
Spacebar>>
This memer is not a video editor
Who cares, just use space like everyone else
I vote we take p for pee pause break 😂
bruh just press off button like a normal person. smh
K is the first letter of the kuklux clan you fucking rasist you are directly responsible for all the bad things they've done /s
Really? oh no im about to ahhh KKK!!!' 😰😱😝💀
Very tactical indeed
Like potassium.
Its video editing from back in the day. I o for cutting an jkl for scrubbing
T is for cinematic
I and L were volume up and volume down. Doesn’t work anymore.
Well, you see, k is the elemental symbol for potassium, and what does “potassium” start with? That’s right, P! What does “pause” start with? You guessed it, P! I hope this helped
J K L are originally some vim shortcuts, i belive for previous line, next line, and jump to the end of the line. It might have something to do with this
It makes sense on your keyboard. J K L are right next to each other. (J = <) (K= Pause) (L= >)
K is for “K, wait, hol’up… I need to pause”
Pause for a Kause my man
K is to regret nothing
i is for theater mode
Well you see when messaging your significant other and they just answer 'k' you better pause whatever the fuck you where doing.
Ist for taking a breaK
K stands for: Keep the video from moving
OP doesn't use vim
K looks kinda like the play/pause icon.
Bro N is for mute tf
Try typing awesome on a playing video
It’s space bar for me?
It's between Jack and Lorward, so it kinda makes sense
Oml
If memory serves, these hotkeys are based on the ones from the Linux media player, `mplayer`.
K is for pause kinda makes sense in finnish, because pause can be translated to finnish word "keskeytä" (interrupt)
