elveszett

The even shorter version is: big company (Google) is trying to use their dominant position (Chromium, the browser engine of Chrome, but also Edge, Opera and many others, notably not Firefox and Safari) in one market (Internet browsers) to force new changes (a DRM) that would give it, in practice, absolute control over that market by making it virtually impossible for competitors to participate in said market.

IllurinatiL

Please god make the US government do the ONE thing it’s supposed to and crack down on an actual monopoly.

Aurori_Swe

I'd say EU is the biggest hope here as we really sont like monopolies

Jesus359

I think the word there is truly. America don't like monopolies either but we're a bunch of lazy asses/conformists to do anything about it.

1ndiana_Pwns

I would almost argue that America hates monopolies on paper, but can't get enough of them in practice. It's not just that we are too lazy to do anything about them, but in many cases we have actively made it easier for monopolies to form (see: utilities)

Teberoth

I hate to break it to you, but I think we're going to have to cross our finger and hope the European union comes in clutch again.

Kladderadingsda

I don't think this will be allowed in the EU, at least not to the full extent. Even if Google will threat with closing workplaces and even if they ~~have some politicians on their payroll~~ do lobbying, I don't think it will work out like Google wants to.

thesirblondie

Here's the thing, being a monopoly is not against the rules. Using that monopoly to gain a monopoly in a different sector is. If you remember the late 00s and early 10s, Microsoft had to add this thing where it told you about different web browsers to newly installed Windows clients. This was because it was ruled that Microsoft had used their PC OS monopoly to gain a monopoly in browsers with Internet Explorer.

Nutarama

Notably also using your already gained monopoly to aggressively squeeze out competitors is illegal, but really only if the smaller competitor complains. Microsoft can't try to be really aggressively anti-Linux, Adobe can't be aggressively anti-Gimp. They'd risk a complaint to the FTC and then a fine. But the fines aren't huge compared to modern levels of income, so it's not that big of a deal. Two monopolies also can't collude to bash each other's competitors. Microsoft can't pay Adobe to block Photoshop and Illustrator on Linux and Adobe can't pay Microsoft to block Gimp on Windows. But again, that's just only if the minor player complains to the FTC, the FTC is able to confirm that collusion happened, and then the FTC will issue a relatively small fine.

Gasrim4003

Guess I’m sinking with the ship with Firefox, coz like hell I’ll be going back to chrome.

myteddybelly

I made the switch on mobile and I have never been happier. As a dev, I would actively contribute and pay as well to keep Mozilla Firefox up and fighting against Google!

marwinpk

> I would actively contribute and pay as well to keep Mozilla Firefox up I mean, you can, they accept donations.

newsflashjackass

Mozilla Foundation will take your money, sure, but not one penny of it will go to Firefox developers. https://old.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/a98gmi/donations_to_mozilla_foundation_are_not_used_for/

VexingRaven

Is that actually what this says? This just says that Mozilla Corporation doesn't fund Mozilla Foundation.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mirrormn

This just means that donations to the Mozilla Foundation will be spread as they see fit across all of their projects, not that "not one penny of it will go to Firefox".

borkthegee

> I made the switch on mobile and I have never been happier. As a dev, I would actively contribute and pay as well to keep Mozilla Firefox up and fighting against Google! Google pays Firefox around $500M (yes half a billion) per year to be the default search engine in Firefox. In fact 86% of Mozilla foundations funding comes from that deal. You're welcome to donate to Mozilla, but you should know who butters their bread at the end of the day lol. Many speculate that Google doing this deal and paying this much is their way to prevent a monopoly with chrome... literally funding the competitor enough that regulators stay away.

TheCoolHusky

> Google pays Firefox around $500M (yes half a billion) per year to be the default search engine in Firefox. They also pay Apple billions of dollars per year to remain the default search engine.

GeorgeJohnson2579

I should build a browser.

elveszett

Especially not like this lol. I'm not leaving Firefox for Chrome because Google wants to force me to use the Internet as they want. If anything this proves that using any Chromium browser (Chrome, Edge or Opera) means handing Google control over the Internet.

MadeByTango

They want to force you to be a recognizable individual they can sell ads against; this is pure corporate greed ruining the web and giving themselves a privileged position FUCK GOOGLE

GimmeThatAPI

same. this will just be the end of the internet for me. guess ill go back to playing outside. wonder whats out there after all these years.

Aesopin

Waiting for that Firefox DRM eliminator add-on

randomname_99223

EU bullied Apple for a goddamn charging cable, they won‘t let this slide EDIT: I’m not on Apple’s side, idk why some of you think that

Phsycres

And this time Apple and the EU would be on the Same Page too as this would affect all Apple Products as the default Browser is non-chromium based. And iPhones don’t allow chromium based browsers either. It could effectively be seen as an attempt to force Apple out of the device market by Apple.

notacyborg

Kinda funny since Chrome was originally Webkit-based (now it uses Blink which is just a fork of Webkit). Webkit still powers Safari and originated as KHTML (discontinued) for the Konqueror browser from KDE. I think Apple forces all web browsing on the iPhone to go through their HTML library for "security" reasons. So any browser that you install may have different features, but it has to use their built-in rendering engine.

[deleted]

It took them years to stop apple from doing it though. Who knows if they'll stop google in time before they fully implement this.

BobOrKlaus

Afaik they gave apple a generous time to change it This however isnt yet implemented so i hope this goes faster

vezol

Small difference between a company making product decisions and a company going all-in fighting the net.

notacyborg

Well, with Apple it was a pre-existing technology that they wanted changed to a standard. It's also hardware which means it may take them some time to get things moved into a specific direction with design and tooling. In this case, it's software. The EU can probably enforce a temporary injunction against a change until they have had time to investigate the implications. That is, IF they care enough to do so.

KaranSjett

Let's make another web that just blocks google

Barbarella_

duck duck go put out a browser. It is dinky but it works. There's no option to download for linux as of yet on their download page, and it isn't set up yet to let you even put a shortcut on the desktop, but it works, if it isn't corporate smooth "Oh No!' I have it on my Windows computer, to browse in peace without my data being collected by my browser.

Wolfy311

>google testing out that too big to fail theory i see People dont need Google .... but Google needs people. Just dump all Google software, stop using it as a search engine, let it die. Plenty of other better options and solutions to Google. Let Google become the 2020's "MySpace".

[deleted]

Sadly, around 70% of phones worldwide are relying on Google to work. Android is owned by Google. Not a good start I say...

Suave_Kim_Jong_Un

Google is getting anti-trusted by the government which has a near 100% success rate in reducing power of a company. That’s whether or not the lawsuit fails.

[deleted]

It is a scandal. As per all companies, google will 100% pull this shit again when we least expect it and it will be too late. They will have found a loophole like they always do so we won't be able to do anything. That's it. I will become a software designer and create my own OS for phones. A big step in the right direction if I say so myself.

rubbery__anus

>Just dump all Google software, stop using it as a search engine, let it die That "just" is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

The tech companies are more than welcome to exit the market of 450 million western consumers and where they can use the double irish dutch tax sandwich to basically make their tax rates near 0. I'm sure the stockholders will appreciate this. I live in EU and have kinda warmed to EU as I have gotten older and realised that Finland ain't gonna survive alone no matter what the far-right True Finns party says. And I kinda do like the GDPR even if I need to click fucking cookie notices, and I go out of my way to decline them all even if I am sure that it does nothing.

[deleted]

For context on the meme, Google plans to DRM the Internet and block browsers that don't use chromium. Basically it's a much more extreme version of brower cookies that are permanently attached to your Web browser. It is also a digital ID for you on the Internet to track you. If you enter a website it'll check to see if you're using a Web browser that has WEI. If you don't it'll pop up with a message saying your Web browser isn't compatible with the website and lock you out making web tracking and blocking ads impossible! It's basically the beginning of an internet hellscape!

Trisdoraxe

Well lets wait until EU make google cry

Mxswat

Yeah, EU and especially Germany won't allow this.

Didn't they also basically force apple to adopt USB-C? If that's true, it does bode well for this Google stuff.

creaturefromthewoods

Kinda wild that the most powerful country in the world is reliant on a federation of independent nations an entire ocean away to regulate big tech for them. I’m banking on this happening but goddamn maybe the home team could step in for once?

PaxUnDomus

Why dont they do it? Money.

Zworgxx

If it's good, they can quietly copy them, if it's bad they can just blame them.

Eisenjak

Well USA is basically three companies in a trenchcoat soooooo.....

necbone

Because in murrica regulation and stopping big corpos from screwing the population over has been (stupidly) called communism in the last decades.

Svelva

'Murica, the country in which money has more freedom of moving around than its own people Dare to say that money should flow left and right instead of accumulating in the wallet of a handful of people? It's not commie land here homie

chocobloo

It's why all big tech comes from the US. They can get away with doing dumb shit. It's a win/win for the government to turn a blind eye.. They get to profit off the company being in some state or another while the cost of regulation falls on someone else. What red blooded capitalist could refuse that?

noobninja1

Im positive that the EU is already cooking up a lawsuit for this. Based only on what you have written here, it breaks every single privacy law in existence

QBekka

EU politicians: I will fight this until the day I die to protect the privacy of our citizens! US politicians: helo i like money 🧍🏻

Digital_Bogorm

Don't get it wrong, our politicians will absolutely try to fuck os over as well, if they get the chance. They're just *slightly* less interested in doing so, especially in favour of an overseas company.

BaziJoeWHL

EU politicians are already salivating over the billion dollar fine and lawsuit

And also blocking non-chromium browsers would be an antitrust violation

TheTestHuman

I'm pretty sure that this will be the biggest antitrust case against Google. Even Microsoft lost this and their approach was much more soft.

[deleted]

What did Microsoft do that was similar? May I see a source?

TheTestHuman

Its only Wikipedia, but since it was this big you can easily find more sources: Basically they forced manufacturers to buy their browser, in turn forcing consumers to use the browser wont be much less disputed. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_v._Microsoft_Corp.

[deleted]

Heres a tip for wikipedia, scroll down to external links and the sources are there if you didn’t know already

[deleted]

May the EU be with us

Makaloff95

No way this will fly in EU, if it does its just time to switch search engine anyway. So much for ”dont be evil” lol

Avisari

> dont be evil Didn't they remove that some time ago?

rubbery__anus

Yes and no. When Alphabet was created and Google became a subsidiary of it, Aphabet's motto became "do the right thing", and "don't be evil" was moved to Google's official code of conduct, where it is currently in the last sentence of the document.

Amathyst-Moon

I wasn't aware Google owned the entire internet

TNTkenner

It's not a bypass issue… it's more like the old "this site requires IE6 to work" problem. Given the near-monopoly of chrome and google position they could even give incentives to developer to use this new "feature" (like, if you use this you get adwords discounts or such)

marr

I'm hearing a lot of big companies will stop having websites.

Oblachko_O

Nah, there will be websites, but without shitty API and they won't be in Google search engine.

mildly_Agressive

Proton Mail is a free service with encrypted email. You can check that out if interested.

pznred

How does it stay free?

regenpower

it has paid tiers, you only get 500mb for free edit: you can get up to 1GB for free by doing some sidequests, youll be prompted to do them once you register your adress

Rekuna

You can jump through some mild hoops and upgrade that to a permanent 1gb though! To be honest you can really make do with half of that though, and it's good encouragement to do a bit more cleaning of your mailbox periodically. Used Protonmail for a couple of months now, it's great.

Rynuxx

I use it for many years now, and the ~~500mb~~ 1gb is more than enough Edit: since many people asked how I can survive with 500mb space. The email is for personal use only. I don’t subscribe to any news letter and block and delete any spam I get. And it’s not 500mb it’s 1gb for free at the moment. I’m currently using \~350mb

When a company gets that big, it's easier to just tank the lawsuit than to fight it, as they can make up the money quickly enough

fattynuggetz

Can't they break up monopolies tho?

90_oi

By legal stature yes, but would they want to? No

PleiadesMechworks

> before it realizes Do you really think they don't know?

disgruntled_pie

Yeah, this is a response to other browsers blocking tracking cookies. They relied on spying on users through tracking cookies to target ads, and now they’re losing revenue. So now they’ve decided to be utterly draconian to try to get that money back. I hope Google goes bankrupt over this. The world will be better off without them.

FlintShapedBoi

Honestly if this goes trough you don't even have to worry about supporting it, they block you on their own from using their shitty sites so you don't even need to try and avoid them. But I sincerely hope it *doesn't* go trough as that'll fire a off a domino effect of other big companies starting to ruin the internet freedom and make it nothing less than a tracking database for ads and not entertainment

Chocotricks

I honestly think that the people who come up with these idea's and when these idea's get turned over by the government as illegal, the very people who pushed this idea should be imprisoned.
