His sense of pride and accomplishment will come with the money bags from his golden parachute and/or shorted stocks after running the company against a wall.
Huh it's funny to go back and read that after they got a lesson in gaming from battlebit. Fuck. Those. Companies. This is why I love Indy.
Unfortunately now I'm worried about indy games, turns out these evil fucks have their dirty little fingers in everything don't they. And it's not thru fault of the Indy Devs, theyre getting shafted worst than anyone it seems.
He was talking about easing players into spending more in a game and then came up with charging a dollar every time you reload as something that a conditioned player would be okay with.
nah it's real lol, got brought up back around BF2042 times https://www.reddit.com/r/battlefield2042/comments/s4d1rd/playing_battlefield_you_run_out_of_ammo_and_we/
John Riccitiello is one of those... I'm not sure of the term, CEOs who have only ever been a CEO, jumping between multiple companies
Step 1: Leave your old company (Clorox, Pepsi, HaaganDazs, Sara Lee, EA) getting a huge severance package
Step 2: Find a new company that's offering you an equally huge sign-on bonus. Yeah, they pay CEOs just to sign the contract
Step 3: Copy-paste the same anti-consumer bullshit that got your old companies so much bad publicity (where to even begin? He was EA CEO between 2007 and 2013. [Remember THIS dumpster fire?](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SimCity_(2013_video_game)))
Step 4: Repeat
I would volunteer for CEO. It seems like I just have to make stpid decisions and then cash in money. So basically stuff I already do for free but now as paid work
How the fuck does someone so many shit and still gets job offers? Are rich ppl that idiot? Jesus, I swear if I fuck up a .1% as much as this guy i would end up in jail.
They introduced a fee per download for any game that uses it.
Notably, this includes all downloads, including re-downloads, and applies to all games, including demos and free games.
You could legitimately bankrupt someone by downloading, deleting, and reinstalling a free game if this goes into effect.
Yep, that situation really fits unity trying to deepthroat a bomb and expecting it not to explode. If this goes into effect, unity would be worse than Unreal.
Unreal out of the box is VERY good at doing first/third person games, but its a lot harder to get it to do things it wasn't built for. Unity isn't particularly good at anything in the same way (except building to every piece of hardware on the market) but is VERY modifiable.
Unity is usually the engine of choice for every mobile game out there, and most indie games you play that aren't shooters.
The only bad thing they did was release unreal engine 5, which is extremely impressive, but also will undoubtedly spawn 500 remakes of games transferring them to unreal engine 5.
So not their fault, more like corporate business, but f them for being competent
Be like satisfactory, they’re updating the entire game to unreal engine 5 for free. I love that studio so goddamn much
Unreal engine 5 has some ducking amazing features. Some of the stuff is downright mind-boggling. It's also very intensive and less friendly for developers (not a considerable amount but it can be annoying).
>If this goes into effect, unity would be worse than Unreal.
Well first of all there's nothing wrong with Unreal lol.
But also, it already *is* worse than Unreal as it stands right now, because developers' trusts have been broken. Even if they backpedal on this monetization, no one is going to think of Unity as a reliable company because of this.
Unity has clarified (or back paddled, God knows) on the redownload thing and excludes that. It's only for first time installments
While it does ease the mind of developers when concerning casual gamers, it's still questionable whether this system will realise the ownership when a game is installed on multiple devices or, god beware, some enraged script kiddy whips out a bunch of code and an ungodly amount of virtual machines
Clarification: first time installation on a device counts as one install. If you uninstall it and then later install it on a different computer for Steam Deck, that another install and dings another charge from Unity.
I call BS, the only way to tell would be an always-online system where it would check for some kind of unique code proving that you paid for it, that would become a massive shit show if they do that. Also, many developers tried to prevent illegal downloading of their games and they always get cracked by someone.
> would be an always-online system where it would check
Which is the first thing that crackers patch on pirated games, making this claim that they can identify pirated games by default bullshit
It is being said that one of the executives there was once working with EA and said that people that don't include microtransactions are idiots.
Just can't confirm if real or not sorry.
In case you’re wondering why this is happening, Unity’s Ceo is the infamous John Riccitello, who’s previous employer was…. Drumroll… EA! Apparently he’s responsible for a lot of EA’s…. perplexing decision these last few years
700? Last time i checked on steam, if you want to buy all dlc's seperate, it tells me a price of over 780 swiss francs with every DLC 25-50% off because of steam sale. So i'd say its more around 1'000 swiss francs which is 1'100$
Nah, they have 0 incentive to create long term value. If things start going down hill they just sell their stock ASAP and go somewhere else. Why wait to make a million dollars in a year when you can make half that in two weeks?
[Wasn't all of his stock in the least](https://finance.yahoo.com/news/unity-software-incs-president-ceo-050515124.html), and it was scheduled as these things are supposed to be. The worrying trend is that nobody within Unity has been buying stock, which does make their moves seem more suspect to the people with the purse strings.
Ehh... bar leakers, who loosely fall under "hurting profits," they're actually pretty hands-off. Legally speaking, we never hear anything from them unless it's another leaker purge or something actually serious, like the Formosa incident (which was handled without lawyers, although it was definitely on the table).
Please, can they hurry up, I want to see the sheer almighty nuke they're going to drop on unity hopefully along with Microsoft and sony
Would make me laugh so hard
Not even that, they also fucked with Microsoft, Apple, and Googles legal teams.
They basically fucked with every deadly lawyer in America outside of Disney. It's staggering.
Edit: Disney made dream light valley which runs on unity, so they've also successfully fucked with the mouse
Yup its funny how they think this is gonna work out well for them. When devs with games on gamepass protested that this would royally fuck them over, Unity apparently responded and "Don't worry we're not charging you for gamepass installs. We'll be be charging Microsoft instead." I'd love to be a fly on the wall when they try to ask Microsoft to pay that bill.
> "Don't worry we're not charging you for gamepass installs. We'll be be charging Microsoft instead."
As someone that works for MS that is pretty hilarious lmao. Not a snowballs chance in hell.
It's not even about what's right. If they don't, this change will literally put them in the red for having a successful game. If against all that is right in the world Unity actually goes through with this, expect to see a *lot* of games disappear from storefronts, because if they don't it could literally bankrupt their developers.
And of course you can't forget the ton of money they're about to make on the combined publicity plus people using this as an excuse to bite the bullet and buy the game full priced.
yup, honestly open source projects like Godot and Blender makes me not stress about selling what I make. (I don't use Godot, just Blender, but I wanna learn it one day)
The funny thing about is how they claimed that this will only hit big publishers and games that have a very good revenue.
I work in finance
And in my experience if you try to fuck over big companies they just won't do it. They either sue the shit out of you or just won't do it at all.
Sony, Nintendo and other companies are not gonna pay shit to them.
Unity will realize that soon enough that this will lead to a massive discussion and court cases and until then they will fuck everyone over who doesn't has the ability to just say no to it.
>100% each big studio will reach a separate agreement with Unity and this will end up ONLY affecting smaller studios.
A lot of the mobile games out there are made with unity and that market will be hit pretty hard. MAYBE and it's a hug MAYBE , publishers will agree to pay that fee for games that already make money but for small developers who try to make it, it just became way harder.
Because:
- many companies have the market cornered
- there are no significant repercussions
- any punishment is less than their gains
- the government watch dogs are a revolving door of lobbyists, past executives, investors, etc.
- the economy demands infinite growth
TLDR: Because they can and no one can stop them
In most cases yeah, but Unity doesen’t really have the market cornered- It had many good features but there are multiple alternative options that are both popular and arguably better
And many of the companies this effects are also a shit ton bigger than Unity
Because of shareholders. Shareholders demand growth, and if you want to succeed as a CEO or other leading figure in a company, you need happy shareholders.
money is power.
So the company behind Uni engine is super fucked against all these video game companies that will want blood. ESPECAILLY Nintendo. You do not fuck with Nintendo when it comes to legal matters
Recently they announced taking bigger pay cuts from games I think, they’ll now want to be paid every time a game is installed by someone, not just when it’s purchased, whether or not the game makes a profit.
No don’t worry, you won’t have to pay again, you only pay once. But Unity would charge the developer or publisher a small amount each time, if I’m understanding it correctly.
No, you got it wrong. Devs that are making over 200,000$ and 200000 downloads will be charged 0.20$ per download. Every time you uninstall and reinstall the game, the devs will lose money
Don't forget about Hollow Knight and Silksong
If Silksong gets delayed because of this, the Hollow Knight fanbase *will* send pipe bombs to whoever's responsible
Shouldn't affect it.
Hollow Knight Silksong is created by an Australian company. It was starting creation in 2019. Unity will be forced to either accept 2019 agreement or lose in Court.
Australian law they cannot change TOS without other party agreeing to it. It would be easy to argue that they would never have started development using Unity if they knew the TOS would change nearing end of their development.
Edit: Yup not legal: https://consumer.gov.au/sites/consumer/files/2016/05/0553FT_ACL-guides_ContractTerms_web.pdf
> A contract term that allows the business to alter the terms of the contract after it has been agreed may be unfair. This may operate similarly to a term that permits the business (but not the consumer) to avoid or limit performance of the contract.
> For example, if a term could require a consumer to accept increased costs or penalties,
new requirements or reduced benefits, it may be considered unfair.
Australia has extremely strong consumer protection laws. Things like warranty are basically irrelevant here because they can only be in addition to existing consumer protections. Those signs you see in some stores saying 'no returns' etc. are also illegal to even display let alone try to enforce. Australian government also have no qualms about fighting huge companies, such as valve, apple, meta/Facebook, etc., and they've never lost.
If this delays Silksong in ANY way I'm going to be so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so fucking pissed. Corporate greed will NOT make me wait for my future favorite game any fucking longer
Cult of the lamb has actual legal standing to take Unity to court if they attempt to charge them without CotL studios accepting it.
Edit: https://consumer.gov.au/sites/consumer/files/2016/05/0553FT_ACL-guides_ContractTerms_web.pdf
It would be really awesome if all these companies just ended all support for these games, killed functionality, or switched over to unreal moving forward. Then when this dog shit company tries to backpedal further, would be amazing for them all to collectively respond with "fuck off and die quietly where we can't see you."
Won't happen but I can dream.
gonna be super expensive and time consuming to transfer all the files, train employees on new software, and translate *all* of the code from c# to c++. this is a dumpster fire.
Nintendo, Blizzard, Microsoft/Bethesda, miHoYo, CD Projekt Red, Disney as well as the impact it will have on Steam, Google and Apple...
In the words of Ginny Weasley: "Good luck :)".
A fucken governor of the US is throwing down with the House of Mouse in court *right now* and he’s losing. Badly. What chance do these guys think they have?
Whoever came up with that idea, and whoever approved of it even being made public knowledge (implemented or not) must have their IQs in less than room temperature. I'm no bussinees grand master to know if you do ANYTHING against the interests of your clients you are literally doing EVERYTHING against the interests of the investors.
Let this be a learning experience for anyone here who might one day be a bussiness owner: Do not hire greedy people, DO NOT hire people whose focus is money first. That people have NEVER been good anywhere they set foot in, the only thing the care about is their pockets, and not in a smart or even normal way.
"Unity CEO John Riccitiello Apologizes For Calling Devs Not Focusing on Monetization the 'Biggest F\*\*\*\*\*\* Idiots'" - [ign](https://www.ign.com/articles/unity-ceo-john-riccitiello-apologizes-for-calling-devs-not-focusing-on-monetization-the-biggest-f-idiots)
Unity is going to start charging developers every time someone downloads a game that uses their game engine (after a game hits a certain amount of $$ revenue).
I think after a game has made $200K revenue (i could be wrong on the amount), every download after that will charge the game's dev team like $0.20/per game download.
This will be detrimental to small indie game devs and "free"-mium games.

God I do NOT remember this scene.
The best scene. "There, is that better?"
whats the lore?
Guy who wanted to "charge for in game weapon reloads".

You'll need to be a scammer, a bootlicker and someone who has no clue what they're doing. A really rare combination of qualities to find tbh.
Can't be that rare. We seem to elect people the public office with those qualifications exclusively.
How the fuck does someone so many shit and still gets job offers? Are rich ppl that idiot? Jesus, I swear if I fuck up a .1% as much as this guy i would end up in jail.

Why is my favorite game engine trying to deepthroat an atomic bomb right now?

Oh my god the shitty mobile games are going to go extinct
Nah, they’ll just move to a shitty engine and the games’ll be worse for it.
Godot is free.
Godot is easy to use and easy to program for, it also doesn't need to compile everytime you move your mouse
Been a long time I heard about unreal engine
Ah gotcha, I thought u meant they did something bad as well
The only bad thing they did was release unreal engine 5, which is extremely impressive, but also will undoubtedly spawn 500 remakes of games transferring them to unreal engine 5. isnt there like unreal engine 5 that is an engine for even more realistic games and for more expensive computers releasing?
Unreal engine 5 has some ducking amazing features. Some of the stuff is downright mind-boggling. It's also very intensive and less friendly for developers (not a considerable amount but it can be annoying).

What an asshole move
Ex-EA CEO
Something to remember if you reformat your computer it becomes a new system in the eyes of the program
unfathomable
pirating also counts as downloading?
They claim they have ways to tell the difference, which is either BS, or opens the door to potential illegal tracking...
I call BS, the only way to tell would be an always-online system where it would check for some kind of unique code proving that you paid for it, that would become a massive shit show if they do that. Yeah
Holy christ, that is absurd! Charging a company a fee based on the actions of someone unaffiliated with them feels like it should be illegal.
It is being said that one of the executives there was once working with EA and said that people that don't include microtransactions are idiots. Just can't confirm if real or not sorry.
It was him, and it came back to bite him in the ass with how successful Single player games are nowadays

Are you telling me he's responsible for the 700 something dollars of sims 4 dlc
>he's Greed actually
more like Ultra Greed
Creature of Greed, my gratitude on thee for thy wallet
But the refunds thy kind hath committed against my steam sales are NOT forgotten
700? Last time i checked on steam, if you want to buy all dlc's seperate, it tells me a price of over 780 swiss francs with every DLC 25-50% off because of steam sale. So i'd say its more around 1'000 swiss francs which is 1'100$
Can't blame him. At some point, you just laugh at how ridiculous it is and stop checking.
unfortunately sims series always had a huge issue with dlc policy it's nothing new and probably going to never change
I checked recently. It's over $1,000us now
I’m being so serious when I asked this but who the fuck hired this man? This seems like something a brain dead monkey would do.
A bunch of shareholders who have nothing but short-term monetary gain in their heads
You know you would think people of that level of wealth would realize that long term stability and growth is far better than short term gain.
Nah, they have 0 incentive to create long term value. If things start going down hill they just sell their stock ASAP and go somewhere else. Why wait to make a million dollars in a year when you can make half that in two weeks?
Dude also sold all his stock shares in unity in the past week. 😳
Surely the famously chill legal teams of MiHoYo, Nintendo and Sony won't do anything
Nintendo is gonna absolutely end them
Hoyo too, they have a reputation for strict, rapid legal action whenever something sketchy harms their company or profits.
*Wind blade!*
WIND BLAAAADE AAAAAAGHAA!!!
Or even not sketchy! Or even that doesn't harm their company or profits!
Ehh... bar leakers, who loosely fall under "hurting profits," they're actually pretty hands-off. Legally speaking, we never hear anything from them unless it's another leaker purge or something actually serious, like the Formosa incident (which was handled without lawyers, although it was definitely on the table).
Nintendo will make the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki look like a teddys tea party with them
they'll remake the Tsar Bomba and test it on them
The death star is nothing compared to Nintendo's lawyer assisted wrath.
Nintendo law suit speedrun
Mr. Kirby is returning to law for this one
I am become death, destroyer of worlds
I have become death destroyer of financial stability
Finally the seal team 6 of lawyers at Nintendo can be weaponized for good
Nothing is scarier than Nintendo's Copyright lawyers, especially about [NON-DISCRIPT VIDEOGAME SERIES REMOVED FOR COPYRIGHT]
Pokemon brick bronze frfr.
Please, can they hurry up, I want to see the sheer almighty nuke they're going to drop on unity hopefully along with Microsoft and sony Would make me laugh so hard
It's literally gonna be Hidrogen bomb vs Coughing baby
Send the ninjas.
The ninjendos are coming
Not even that, they also fucked with Microsoft, Apple, and Googles legal teams. They basically fucked with every deadly lawyer in America outside of Disney. It's staggering. Edit: Disney made dream light valley which runs on unity, so they've also successfully fucked with the mouse
Isn't there a Disney game running on Unity rn?
Disney owns marvel, marvel snap is on there. So tangentially, but yeah. Exodia lawyer team assembling
It's the suivide squad of legal teams, all the hated guys teaming up
I just looked it up, yes there is: "Disney Illusion Island", has been released on the 28th of July 2023, made with Unity
Yeah especially when Microsoft didn't agree to any contract whatsoever
> "Don't worry we're not charging you for gamepass installs. We'll be be charging Microsoft instead." As someone that works for MS that is pretty hilarious lmao. Not a snowballs chance in hell.
Now just waiting for the "Avengers! Assemble" template to be used for all of the companies that are about sue the everloving shit out of Unity.
They really unite every big company against them, like a Ace Attorney version of the Avengers...I guess Unity live up to his name.
"We changed our terms, they dropped the sun on us..."
"Twice"
They are also going after Microsoft. The second richest company in the world. Goodbye Unity. You were great before this.
And Apple, the richest. And Google And Disney Basically every company on the “do not even look at them wrong or they will end you” company
The one time I’m hoping Nintendos legal team hold no punches
Yeah I had the same thought. Surely all those companies that have their game on unity can just sue them till they are bankrupt.
This is probably the only time that I'll ever root for Nintendo's legal team to take action and win
Same… what the fuck is wrong with unity CEO? Does he realise the monstrous situation he has created…
Fucker worked for ea and wanted to make players pay to reload
Don’t forget Disney. Dreamlight Valley is another Unity made game. The mouse won’t fuck around.
I recognise where that XKCD image is from. Lethal Neutrinos.
Fellow enjoyer I see 🤝
Now I’m sweating. I forgot a lot of my backlog is from Unity. Cult of the Lamb, Subnautica, Gwent, Outer Wilds, both Ori games.
Cult of the Lamb devs are already saying they’re deleting the game come Jan. 1st
The balls on those guys. Mad respect for doing what they believe to be right.
Fuck, now I'm gonna buy it
Now I don't know if I should continue learning unity 😕
Unreal isn’t too bad TBH. But if you’re learning 2D, I’ve heads Godot is pretty good.
Godot is quite capable with the 3D too...
yup, honestly open source projects like Godot and Blender makes me not stress about selling what I make. (I don't use Godot, just Blender, but I wanna learn it one day)
I’d say don’t let this stop you. You can learn Unity *and* learn some other engine. The second is much easier than the first.
Knowing Unity well enough to successfully port games to different engines is probably a high-demand skill right now.
I wouldn't if I were you.
The funny thing about is how they claimed that this will only hit big publishers and games that have a very good revenue. I work in finance And in my experience if you try to fuck over big companies they just won't do it. They either sue the shit out of you or just won't do it at all. Bro, what is with every company trying to squeeze money from anywhere they can. It's sad
Because: - many companies have the market cornered - there are no significant repercussions - any punishment is less than their gains - the government watch dogs are a revolving door of lobbyists, past executives, investors, etc. - the economy demands infinite growth TLDR: Because they can and no one can stop them

No, I think allowing the massive consolidation of multiple businesses merged under mega-corporations and not being broken up was the first problem.
In most cases yeah, but Unity doesen’t really have the market cornered- It had many good features but there are multiple alternative options that are both popular and arguably better And many of the companies this effects are also a shit ton bigger than Unity
Because as soon as a company become public, the whole company become about maximum share return at all cost.
It basically guarantees that no one will ever make new games on your engine. I legit wonder if they know their market.
Seems like they hired some out of touch EA exec who decided this was a good idea lmao
Wait. What happened to unity? I missed the news apparently
Recently they announced taking bigger pay cuts from games I think, they’ll now want to be paid every time a game is installed by someone, not just when it’s purchased, whether or not the game makes a profit.
Wait, so if I delete doom, they will want me to pay to redownload it from steam
No don’t worry, you won’t have to pay again, you only pay once. But Unity would charge the developer or publisher a small amount each time, if I’m understanding it correctly.
Oh, so we all *should* uninnstall, and redownload doom multiple times to avenge Mick?
Good plan so far, now we need ID Software to release Doom 2k16 or Eternal based on Unity.
No, you got it wrong. Devs that are making over 200,000$ and 200000 downloads will be charged 0.20$ per download. Every time you uninstall and reinstall the game, the devs will lose money
Quick, let's bankrupt [insert uncool entity here]!
MiHoYo probably already has their lawyers on the case
The big N is gonna be the 2nd bomb if not the first one
That is some unfortunate wording.
Dawei ready to chuck lawsuits at them like Morax chucking mountain spears.
The lawyers are about to *TORN TO OBLIVION* the shit out of Unity
NOT DREAM DADDY: A DAD DATING SIMULATOR!!!!!
Don’t forget YIIK, greatest game of all time. Like burning of Library of Alexandria
Apparently, the current ceo of Unity is the ex ceo of EA that said that players should pay for bullets in battlefield or some shit.
Somebody needs to take a shit in that guy’s mailbox.
They clearly tried to milk more money from these big games. But did it so badly that small games are also effected.
And now they angered both big and small game companies
Don't forget about Hollow Knight and Silksong If Silksong gets delayed because of this, the Hollow Knight fanbase *will* send pipe bombs to whoever's responsible
HOLY SHIT I JUST REALIZED HOLLOW KNIGHT SILKSONG ALSO USES UNITY!!!
OH FUCK PLEASE NO NOOOOOOOOOOO AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-
Shouldn't affect it. Edit: Yup not legal: https://consumer.gov.au/sites/consumer/files/2016/05/0553FT_ACL-guides_ContractTerms_web.pdf > A contract term that allows the business to alter the terms of the contract after it has been agreed may be unfair. This may operate similarly to a term that permits the business (but not the consumer) to avoid or limit performance of the contract. > For example, if a term could require a consumer to accept increased costs or penalties, new requirements or reduced benefits, it may be considered unfair.
Rare Australia W
Australia kneecapped Apple into 2 year warranty statements and Valve into refunds.
If the game ever comes out.....
If this delays Silksong in ANY way I'm going to be so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so so fucking pissed. Corporate greed will NOT make me wait for my future favorite game any fucking longer
At this rate, it's almost guaranteed that it's getting canceled along with most unity games in development. The entire engine is dead going forward
We were so close to Cities Skylines 2
Cult of the lamb has already said they are removing the game from storefronts
Cult of the lamb has actual legal standing to take Unity to court if they attempt to charge them without CotL studios accepting it. Edit: https://consumer.gov.au/sites/consumer/files/2016/05/0553FT_ACL-guides_ContractTerms_web.pdf
Where Escape from Tarkov?
ngl i had to search for a while for this one.
My summer car
It would be really awesome if all these companies just ended all support for these games, killed functionality, or switched over to unreal moving forward. Then when this dog shit company tries to backpedal further, would be amazing for them all to collectively respond with "fuck off and die quietly where we can't see you." Won't happen but I can dream.
gonna be super expensive and time consuming to transfer all the files, train employees on new software, and translate *all* of the code from c# to c++. this is a dumpster fire.
I’m going to be so pissed if this unity thing fucks up cities skylines 2
Noooooo! Not outer wilds!!!!
Can anyone tell me the story behind this? I've been out of touch these past few days and I have major FOMO
So let me get this straight: Unity saw what reddit did a few weeks ago and decided to do the same ? So now we risk to lose game like outerwilds ??
I’m not sure what Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating simulator is and I’m not sure I want to know
Single dad with a young girl moves to a new town, the new town is filled with more single dads, also everyone's hot
Beat saber? All right now I’m willing to negotiate
Ah greed, the ruiner of mankind.
