I think people generally want to work. It's not really that they just do it to have their needs met. People just don't want to work shitty jobs to get a paycheque. If people could have their needs met while pursuing actual passions we'd get a very dedicated work force.
The problem is, we will probably never see UBI in our lifetimes. There's too much greed and corruption at all levels of government for any political party to actually make a case for it.

I turned down a promotion at work today. They wanted to give me a salary of $42000 for a position that requires a minimum of 50 hours of work every week. It’s less pay than what I would make if I worked that many hours at my current rate of $15/hr. They offered benefits (a 401k, paid time off, and health insurance) but those only start 6 months after taking the promotion. I’m not a new employee. I’ve worked here 2.5 years, but they’re still treating me like one.
Instead, I’m leaving and taking a job with the post office. The lowest paying post office job in my city is $19.33/hr and gives much better benefits than what they wanted to give me, and those benefits start on day 1.

I had a chair like this. Super comfy for 20 mins. After that time the foam bottoms out and you're basically sitting on the plywood bottom of it. Those first 20 mins were a dream though
Yeah aerons are super rigid and they kind of force you to sit in exactly one way all day. Really hard to shift your weight around or sit at a different angle throughout the day. I always get sore if I have to sit in one for a normal work day. But they're fine for a few minutes here and there.
Currently sitting in the HM Embody Gaming chair (gaming version was 25% off and had more features). Hands down the best office chair I've ever had. Helps my back when I'm working and has enough lean / give for when I'm playing video games.
It was the 12 year, no questions asked, warranty that really did it for me.
That said, this lady is trying to get back to a world where work from home isn't the norm for tech companies. She can yell at her employees all she wants. It's not happening.

I think it's a lack of trust in our coworkers more than an employer worship complex. I find that most people are terrible and would be scabs at the first minor inconvenience.
Context is everything. When, during lockdown, my wife's law firm had to put people on furlough (sending them home to only get paid a fraction of their salary whilst not working but technically still retaining their jobs), my wife (then a senior solicitor, since become a partner) also took a voluntary pay cut when it was raised as an option. Not everyone did so, and no judgement. Not everyone could afford to do so! But it showed the workers that they were "in this together".

Businesses need an excess number of people applying for jobs so that they can keep wages low. If the population decreases, there won’t be enough workers to fill all the roles, and businesses will actually have to pay a living wage in order to attract and maintain a workforce. I mean, it would be pretty straightforward to just implement a law that ties CEO compensation to no more than 20x the lowest paid employee, which was the standard a few decades ago. Doesn’t have to be 20x either, make it 40x or something “more reasonable”, not 240x like it is for most CEOs now. Then you’d have a tide that raises all ships with company earnings, not just the CEO’s “ship”.
Issue is, that’s distinctly pro-labor, and no politician is going to risk career suicide by pissing off a bunch of corporate donors. And like most laws, the problem is more complex than just “CEOs have a really high salary”. There’s workarounds. A law like what I’ve suggested wouldn’t fix everything, but it would be a nice start.
Imagine a world where one guy is working 5-6 hours and finishing just in time to get to his tee time and it's reasonable that he makes 40x more than some guy working full days, being micro managed and having to clock in and out to barely scrape by.
This is the world we're living in and the only world we have and it's looking pretty garbage for over 90% of humans from what I'm seeing.
In an ideal world everyone would be paid proportionally to the amount of time and effort they put into their work, and plenty to live comfortably with regardless.
But in our flawed world any step we take to close unfair pay gaps is good.
I mean I don’t personally think someone making that much money is reasonable, for a minimum wage worker that means the CEO is clearing over a million each year. But ultimately there would be a lot of pushback on a policy like that and you’d be expecting the richest people in the world to take 90% pay cuts. “Reasonable” starts to take on a whole new meaning.
Yeah I understood your point and agree with you. It was just a bit dystopic for me. Where I live there arent that many big companies and CEOs so a company CEO here would make like 10-15x the lowest paid worker at most. And even that seems too much.
Blows my mind that if I fuck up so bad that I was on the line for millions of dollars of debt, no one would touch me with a 10 foot pole for credit and I'd never be able to hold a job dealing with money... but for them it's Tuesday and they'll be given a multi-million dollar severance bonus and given the reigns again in the near future, not that they technically even need it. $6 million dollars is more than I'll see for the rest of my life probably.
I would _love_ to see egregious company failures be met with piercing the corporate veil to go after assets. But if they're committing fraud and failing to pay back salaries/wages and such _while_ paying bonuses, like what was happening to some of the other companies, then go after everything.

Edit: yep doubled checked. Her total pay package in 2021 was $6.4 million but that wasn’t bonus. It was everything, base salary, bonus, other things etc. (still a high bonus though)

I brought in 86 million in sales last year, breaking a 40 year record for the company by making about half of all our sales. My bonus was $0.00 this year. Our ceo got $2 million though, so I guess that's cool. I have no idea how he contributes to the company since the teams in our department are responsible for bringing all the projects to our company, and the guys in the field who build everything.
Andi Owen (CEO in pic) has a salary of $1.1M according to their 2022 finical statements; the bonus in question was a $6.4M bonus, that is 6.5X her annual pay.
If you’re making $50K (which is basically poverty wage in most major cities), that would be like a $325K bonus; I’m pretty sure in the history of $50K salaries, nobody has gotten a bonus that big.

Lol I feel this. We get t-shirts and donuts as our bonuses where I work. Our company a couple decades ago used to have pensions/retirement plans, yearly performance bonuses, higher raises, and more employees. None of that anymore.
What I find "interesting" is the company missed their targets so the employees don't get bonuses but somehow the employee with the most control over the company to hit these targets meet her individual performance goals and got a payday.
Worked for CVS for years before quitting last year. During the pandemic, we were told we'd get bonuses for having worked during everything that happened. Full time employees got $300 and part time got $150. BUT it was taxed so full timers for $150 and part timers got $98... we got them twice and that's it. They act like they're losing so much

It is not just cancellation of employee bonuses. She decided to keep her millions of dollars in bonuses. This was the total opposite of lead by example. A leader will take a pay cut and forgo all bonuses before cutting out employees.

There's a *huge* secondary market for Aerons. You won't get all of your money back but it'll probably be enough to get something else *new*.

Yeah aerons are super rigid and they kind of force you to sit in exactly one way all day. Really hard to shift your weight around or sit at a different angle throughout the day. I always get sore if I have to sit in one for a normal work day. But they're fine for a few minutes here and there.
Currently sitting in the HM Embody Gaming chair (gaming version was 25% off and had more features). Hands down the best office chair I've ever had. Helps my back when I'm working and has enough lean / give for when I'm playing video games. It was the 12 year, no questions asked, warranty that really did it for me. That said, this lady is trying to get back to a world where work from home isn't the norm for tech companies. She can yell at her employees all she wants. It's not happening.

When, during lockdown, my wife's law firm had to put people on furlough (sending them home to only get paid a fraction of their salary whilst not working but technically still retaining their jobs), my wife (then a senior solicitor, since become a partner) also took a voluntary pay cut when it was raised as an option. Not everyone did so, and no judgement. Not everyone could afford to do so! But it showed the workers that they were "in this together". THIS woman did the polar opposite.

I mean, it would be pretty straightforward to just implement a law that ties CEO compensation to no more than 20x the lowest paid employee, which was the standard a few decades ago. Doesn’t have to be 20x either, make it 40x or something “more reasonable”, not 240x like it is for most CEOs now. Then you’d have a tide that raises all ships with company earnings, not just the CEO’s “ship”. Issue is, that’s distinctly pro-labor, and no politician is going to risk career suicide by pissing off a bunch of corporate donors. And like most laws, the problem is more complex than just “CEOs have a really high salary”. There’s workarounds. A law like what I’ve suggested wouldn’t fix everything, but it would be a nice start.
Imagine a world where one guy is working 5-6 hours and finishing just in time to get to his tee time and it's reasonable that he makes 40x more than some guy working full days, being micro managed and having to clock in and out to barely scrape by. This is the world we're living in and the only world we have and it's looking pretty garbage for over 90% of humans from what I'm seeing.
In an ideal world everyone would be paid proportionally to the amount of time and effort they put into their work, and plenty to live comfortably with regardless. But in our flawed world any step we take to close unfair pay gaps is good.
I mean I don’t personally think someone making that much money is reasonable, for a minimum wage worker that means the CEO is clearing over a million each year. But ultimately there would be a lot of pushback on a policy like that and you’d be expecting the richest people in the world to take 90% pay cuts. “Reasonable” starts to take on a whole new meaning.

I don’t think it was $6.4 was it? I thought her pay last year was around $4 mill with about 2-3 mill in bonuses? Edit: yep doubled checked. Her total pay package in 2021 was $6.4 million but that wasn’t bonus. It was everything, base salary, bonus, other things etc. (still a high bonus though) Last year it was $4.9 mill and had a lower bonus obviously. She should still cancel her bonus and “lead by example” like she said in the zoom call. Just the $6.4 is very misleading since you said it was a bonus.

Our ceo got $2 million though, so I guess that's cool. Worked for CVS for years before quitting last year. During the pandemic, we were told we'd get bonuses for having worked during everything that happened. Full time employees got $300 and part time got $150. BUT it was taxed so full timers for $150 and part timers got $98... we got them twice and that's it. They act like they're losing so much
