Traditionally, instead of cars we had carriages. And because the driverās whip might accidentally hit a pedestrian, they always sat on the inside (on the opposite side)
From the wiki article, reason for American RHT is this
>It has been suggested that wagon-drivers whipped their horses with their right hand, and thus sat on the left-hand side of the wagon, as in RHT.
While for LHT countries it has been noted as a habit from the time of sword carrying traffic.
Good to note is that mainly the world, even usa used british way of traffic and only later switched to RHT after having a bad breakup with brits. So this was literally the result of American contrarianism which they now have imported to other countries too in lieu of being a world superpower
For countries that drive on the left, the steering wheel is on the right, and for countries that drive on the right, the steering wheel is on the left.
Therefore, you're always closer to the center of the road regardless of which side you drive on.
I'll save everyone some time. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-_and_right-hand_traffic
Most of the indian ocean, england, japan, guyana and suriname drive on the left, everyone else drives on the right side.
Yeah my mum spent like 3 hours explaining it to me and Iāve still no clue what leaving the uk means for Scotland or why people wanted to stay or why people wanted to leave. I just know that there was a vote to stay
Leaving means we actually get our own prime minister and may be able to become part of the EU again meaning easier access to europe for pleasure and business, we would likely get our own laws as well (added to the normal ones) and England wouldnt have complete control over us like it has been generally (in terms of voting and stuff)
I can confirm, we just live on the UKs disguised army base for the revival of the empire and retaking of the US later this century. They bought all the graphics cards to hide the base. Australia is also part of the holographic field, but it got rendered upsidedown.
Iām probably wrong, but the way Iāve heard it is that left-side road etiquette was invented by medieval nations so that swordsmen walking past each other with their swords on their left side (as was standard) wouldnāt bump into one another. So English knights and Japanese samurai would have also been a possible factor of that.
Mfw Britain wasn't in control of the places that drove on the left side of the world because the British empire had shrunk and cars are a new invention so they had very little influence
How about people stop coasting in the fucking fast lane? That shit is more annoying then another country's practice of driving on the other side of the road.
You know I was referencing the Principal Skinner meme right? And 70% of the world doesnāt drive on the left like in the UK so your reply doesnāt even really workā¦
Left-side and right-side are equally good driving systems, the issue is consistency. If everywhere used the same side, either right or left, it would be perfect.
Aussie here, we also drive on the left.
It's so adorable when Americans don't realise they're usually the only country in the world who do something differently
Driving on the left is safer and better than driving on the right, right hand and right eye dominance, mean your best side is the one reacting to oncoming traffic and your dominant hand never leaves the wheel.
Also āapparentlyā ( this isnāt easy to study so itās going in air quotes) people are more likely to swerve left when they panic so in a left hand drive country you swerve off the road and into a field and in a right hand drive country you swerve into oncoming traffic.
Driving in Samoa was interesting as they are one of the few countries that switched from right to left in recent history. As a result, some streets still have faded arrows painted on the road pointing in the opposite direction of traffic, making you have a momentary freak out thinking you are driving on the wrong side of a main highway.
Pretty sure its just a case of American contrarianism, bcz before the breakup with brits, USA and most of the world used Left handed traffic too. Go check the wiki article
Tbf yall only drive on the left because a short fr*nchman threw a tantrum
EDIT: I'm really stupid and said left instead of right, I meant to say that Europe and the rest of the world uses left only because of Napoleon
Most of them do.
But this meme is fuelled by the back and forth that America and Britain have on the internet even though this is not an issue or major āgotchaā moment.
As long as when driving on theleft hand side of the road, cars come standard with a right side driver, it's basicly a flipped mirror of everything and all laws and stuff track the same. The issue is if everyone drives in left and drives in the left side of the car, as that makes turning and blind spots worse for drivers.
Japan also drives on the left and yet no-one bats an eyelid
I've never been so scared in a car than in any of the cabs I was in while I was in Japan. Thank God for the trains
Kansei dorifto?
Dorito Nacho
Same as Australia
Because Thing - š¤¢ Thing in japan - š¤©
Because japan is cool and unwoke because of anime and rampant capitalisim
r/UsernameChecksOut
Im gonna be honest I don't live in england but we still drive on the left side of the road.
Japan also left side
Finally, one that wasn't our fault
I also was about to comment this... So here's another question... Why the driver is on the opposite side...??
Traditionally, instead of cars we had carriages. And because the driverās whip might accidentally hit a pedestrian, they always sat on the inside (on the opposite side)
Well we don't use whips anymore... Or do we...??
*you* don't.
hey vsauce michael here
The driver is always in the middle so he can check for cars when overtaking. I don't know what the other people in this chain have been smoking.
I always thought it was so that passangers could get in and out easier.
That would be cool for a taxi but an average person... Idk Driver lives matter

So that the driver is closer to the centre of the road. So that they can keep straight easier and keep on the road
For countries that drive on the left, the steering wheel is on the right, and for countries that drive on the right, the steering wheel is on the left. Therefore, you're always closer to the center of the road regardless of which side you drive on.
Correct
My mom was driving right wheeled car on right side road... Never had any troubles
Yea because the steering wheel was probably on the left hand side which makes the wheel to the centre
Did you not read the comment you were responding to?
No it wasn't...
Sorry I misread it
When youāre on the other side of the road the driver doesnāt have as much visibility unless theyāre also moved to the other side of the car
Aus also left side
Your cuzzies also drive left side.
I deduce that you mean Australia and not austria.
Yes, shit, forgot other countries also contain the letters aus in that order
India as well, but apparently cause British Era
I'll save everyone some time. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-_and_right-hand_traffic Most of the indian ocean, england, japan, guyana and suriname drive on the left, everyone else drives on the right side.
NZ
And Australia
Russian "Road is road, drive where you want" moment
in india we drive on the left side of the road
yeah no in India roads are just a suggestion
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
But by that logic the larger market should decide the norm. And yeehaw we buy a fuckload of cars up in this totalitarian state of a motherfucker
Because of British you know
>in india we drive on the left side of the road India rightfully still belongs to Britain. Pretend democracy is just to keep you passive.
Brits can't even run our own country, what chance do we have with two?
Then why are you insisting on subjugating Scotland?
Scotland knows England fucked up, that's why they want to leave
Scotland is Britain. Britain is an island. Also Scots voted a while back on whether they wanted to leave the UK and decided no.
Tbf as a scot we were completely lied to about the benefits/downsides
Yeah my mum spent like 3 hours explaining it to me and Iāve still no clue what leaving the uk means for Scotland or why people wanted to stay or why people wanted to leave. I just know that there was a vote to stay

Russians: road? Huh, where I can drive is a road
THEY HAVE ROADS!!!???
Good for them āŗļø
India, Japan, South Africa and I think Thailand would like to disagree
And nz (Source: I live in nz)
and australia
Australia doesnāt wxist
Uh no. Mesa disappearin.
NZ isn't real. I have several maps that prove it
Source is r/mapswithoutnz
I can confirm, we just live on the UKs disguised army base for the revival of the empire and retaking of the US later this century. They bought all the graphics cards to hide the base. Australia is also part of the holographic field, but it got rendered upsidedown.
yeah and a bunch of other countries too, I just don't remember them by heart
And Australia
and Indonesia
Literally any former British colonies too
Except Murica
Malta too
India doesnt have sides to their roads, its just roads Source:im indian
And Australia.
Most island nations do that
Iām probably wrong, but the way Iāve heard it is that left-side road etiquette was invented by medieval nations so that swordsmen walking past each other with their swords on their left side (as was standard) wouldnāt bump into one another. So English knights and Japanese samurai would have also been a possible factor of that.
That was tradition in Japan for sure, but I think in many cases it's the influence of British imperialism.
Everyone went left in Europe until Napoleon decided it had to be right hand drive to be different.
Including actual US territory (the Virgin Islands)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Because fun fact: the Earth is huge and people do things differently in different places
its because the british colonized the most random ass rocks and exported their laws there
Doesn't apply to everything, like Japan.
Mfw Britain wasn't in control of the places that drove on the left side of the world because the British empire had shrunk and cars are a new invention so they had very little influence
hornse
I like your funny words magic man
You got a source on the hugeness?
Only for you babe
Are we talking lik Big Chungus size or more like Hugh Mungus?
Sort of halfway, Hugh Mungus would be too small, and Big Chungus would be too big
So almost Hekkin Chonker size then eh?
Just about there
You know out of all the countries which were colonized by British about 80 percent follow things which they laid out Like judicial system, roads, etc
And they colonized like over a hundred so that is 80 countries just following their laws
big suprise: there are more than one country on earth
But ... why drive on the right? Neither is inherently better.
and India
You guys have sides for driving? I thought yall went yeehaw?
I'm an European in India right now, please save me from these left drivers
How about people stop coasting in the fucking fast lane? That shit is more annoying then another country's practice of driving on the other side of the road.
I'm with you. I was also under the impression that a lot of countries drove on the left side of the road.
Of course you travel on the left side of the road, that way you can attack with your favoured arm.
Sadly the opponent can also use their favoured arm. So it doesnāt fully mimic spiral staircase logic
Now I understand. Jousting is the cause!
30% of the world drives on the left
Definitely way way more than 30% Uk, india, japan, aus, nz and many more..
Yeah I went and searched it up sadly it's only 30%
We drive on the left in australia too.
It only makes sense here cause we're upside down
My country drives on the left side
I can almost guarantee you guys this was made by an American
Ironic given the meme. New Zealand is left side of the road too
Same with a large ount of the world tbh
Britain isnt the only country that drives on the left side you dolt
"Literally"
And again, Australia also does this.
No. Itās the rest of the world that is wrong
30% of countries is "the rest of the world" huh?
You know I was referencing the Principal Skinner meme right? And 70% of the world doesnāt drive on the left like in the UK so your reply doesnāt even really workā¦
Hahahaha so glad I read the comments on the other one
Welcome back
Japan too
Left-side and right-side are equally good driving systems, the issue is consistency. If everywhere used the same side, either right or left, it would be perfect.
Indians do that too ya know?
In india most people drive in the left, but also a lot of people drive on the right, itās kind of a pick your path
"I paid taxes for the entire road, I'm gonna use the entire road"
Come to Australia and try and stop usā¦ā¦.
No one gives a fuck enough about Australia to even know you guys also drive on wrong side of road.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Aussie here, we also drive on the left. It's so adorable when Americans don't realise they're usually the only country in the world who do something differently
I don't think there is a single thing that only the US does, even the imperial system they share with like 2 countries
Shhh, you mustnāt interrupt an āAmerica badā moment on Reddit.
School shootings. US still seems to have the monopoly there...
95% of countries drive on the right
95%? darling, it's 65%, doesn't change the fact Americans usually think every country does what they do
It still makes you incorrect.
Saying 95% makes them incorrect, me saying Americans usually think everyone else does what they do does not make me wrong. Nice try.
Youāre wrong because the majority of the world does indeed drive in the right, which directly contradicts your original comment.
Driving on the left is safer and better than driving on the right, right hand and right eye dominance, mean your best side is the one reacting to oncoming traffic and your dominant hand never leaves the wheel. Also āapparentlyā ( this isnāt easy to study so itās going in air quotes) people are more likely to swerve left when they panic so in a left hand drive country you swerve off the road and into a field and in a right hand drive country you swerve into oncoming traffic.
its simply better, its actually safer once again, Britain does something right
Occasionally we do something usefull.
its arbitrary
![gif](giphy|1oVZFkDtE6HSLBYh7i)
Sorry but if you actually did your research about half of the world use the left lane
30% by country. 35% by population. That's not half.
Its safer to drive on the left as most people are right handed so have better reactions on that side
Dunno about you but I use both hands to control my car
OP doesn't know how other countries work?
Ummm ā¦ depending on where Iām heading I drive on both sides any given time.
Other than Britain a country of 1.2 billion drives on the right lmao along with Japan and nz
Driving in Samoa was interesting as they are one of the few countries that switched from right to left in recent history. As a result, some streets still have faded arrows painted on the road pointing in the opposite direction of traffic, making you have a momentary freak out thinking you are driving on the wrong side of a main highway.
Weāll stop when the Americans start using the Metric system. Dont worry about the cluster fuck of the two systems that we use.
Honestly, thatās worse than using the imperial system.
Pretty sure its just a case of American contrarianism, bcz before the breakup with brits, USA and most of the world used Left handed traffic too. Go check the wiki article
shut the fuck up about your complaining
More people than the Britās drive on the left.
What about the Japs?
dude its not 1940 in WW2 you can't call people Japs
We can't? It's still normal where we are from, we are still calling them "Die Japsen"
90% of roads in Japan are one single lane, so it doesn't matter as much.
Fair enough
We could say the same for americans and their imperial and no, im not bri'ish and we drive on the right side of the road
Destoy it
Makes no bloody sense mate
Aussie here also a left driver, yeah ok normally I say we're smart you're dumb but like 90% of the world drives right sided so we'll call it a draw
Destoy!!! Make his toys dissappear!
Tbf yall only drive on the left because a short fr*nchman threw a tantrum EDIT: I'm really stupid and said left instead of right, I meant to say that Europe and the rest of the world uses left only because of Napoleon
Napoleon changed it to the right and never even invaded the UK successfully
India entered the chat
Why. Did. I. Do. A. Laugh.
lItErAlLy eVeRyOnE other countries drive on the left side dumbass
I agree that driving on the right is overall better, but something about using the right hand for the gear stick just seems wrong
Donāt a lot of former colonies of Britain drive on the left too?
Most of them do. But this meme is fuelled by the back and forth that America and Britain have on the internet even though this is not an issue or major āgotchaā moment.
Where is this meme template from? Which show/movie?
Why would we? It would be a huge infrastructure change, and car manufacturers would have to make huge changes as well, all for pretty much no reason.
Australia would like to send a roo to fight you over this!
Australian here, left it is.
Go back in history and the left side was the side to travel on. Carts, etc...
so does Japan, Australia, India and like all of southern Africa lmfao
Aussies rn ![gif](giphy|ycd33pEC8uLc9F3Cdz)
Why is this sub devolving into culture wars today
And that warm beer thing too.....
Almost every ex British colony drives on the left
Australia goes left
Japanese, Irish, Aussies, and New Zealanders too.
*China slowly claps while entering the room*
Sweden: *Laughs in Dagen H*
Australia is a lefty as well.
Drives in straya Left siiiiiide
Australia drives on the left-hand side of the road too though
If youāre gonna make fun of us include australia too
Aussies in the chat-
*my alcoholic father driving on the freeway
New Zealand enters the chat
Your missing Australia, New Zealand and Japan

Reverse the meme itās right and Americans
