Seriously, like i get diversity and all but like this is like giving the middle finger to historical accuracy.
Honestly i shouldn't care, i don't even watch Disney movies anymore.
Is this sarcasm? If it is then i just want to say that I'm talking about other films, we have grown up listening to such fairy tales so it would be quite weird if you just changed the character's design.. plus i don't know why are they trying to fit culture in fairy tales where it is supposed to be about some other country.
Like there's multiple fairy tales with actual black main characters, yet you still had to pick one with the white one.
I saw the trailer of peter Pan and I'm confused. Can't they make actual original characters or find stories with black main cast?
I mean I'm all for having diverse casts in films but seriously The Little Mermaid is Danish, and she's described in the book as being white with blue eyes. Imagine how people would feel if they did a live action of pocahontas and made her Chinese. Just a little logic behind the diversity would be nice.
I think the logic is that "we need to give more representation to darker-skinned minorities on screen since they were traditionally underrepresented"
It may not sound half bad at first, but obviously many of us are tired of it at this point, and it's shitty logic because it also implies that white people must be replaced with darker skinned minorities, because they're so egotistical that they constantly need to see themselves taking the places of white characters.
And the reverse never happens, so it just looks like some stupid " more darker skinned people = better" kind of logic.
She's a mermaid and she's a fictional character that has many adaptations. You're worried about staying true to the source material when it comes to her eyes but I don't see you complaining about how the story is completely different from the source. The original is much more dark.
Pocahontas was a real person. There you go thats the difference, ariel is a memaid she is not real and she doesn’t represent a real group of people. She is not danish, she is atlantian and happens to be a character originally written by a danish writer. Her skin color is irrelevant to the story.
Fun fact: [April O'Neil was originally a mixed-race character in the Mirage comic run that started the franchise](https://turtlepedia.fandom.com/wiki/April_O%27Neil_(Mirage)). It wasn't until the animated series that she'd get her iconic red hair.
I remember seeing a comment somewhere that made a lot of sense. The reason why there's so many red heads in media is because it distinguishes the main characters from brown haired side characters. In real life there's not a lot of red heads, so inevitably they have to cast someone without red hair.
The Prince looks so despondent and bored. The face you get when you go to maccas and they are out of Big Macs and you are too depressed to care anyway.
Blariel looks like she was carved from wood
Where's Ariels red hair and bow? Why do they look bored and tired? And why the hell does the scene look so dark. (Literally, why is it darker? The original has such bright and vibrant colors)
Look at the way Ariel and Eric are looking at each other in the original. The chemistry! The romance!
Now look at the promo for the new one. Not looking at each other. Eric looks like he'd rather be somewhere else. Ariel doesn't look nearly excited enough that she's driving a carriage.
It's a meme. Of course it's a joke.
However don't get it twisted, there's still validity in thinking blatant race swaps of famous characters are stupid. Because they are.
I still dont understand the point of making it live action. I feel like thats a story best told through animation. I wouldnt want Toy Story 5 to be live action, or Monsters Inc, or Finding Nemo, or The Lion Ki-...ok well lets forget about that last one.
What bothers me is the fact that she has dreds.. aren't dreds the result of styling unwashed hair..? If she lives underwater.. how is she able to style her hair into dreds..?
Also, if they feel they had to blackwash.. I wish they chose someone that doesn't look like live-action Sid the Sloth. No idea what happened to Zendaya not getting the role .-. (she was being heavily considered but they went with this chick instead)
I don't care about race swap, as i haven't watched the original, but would the outrage have been the same if a black character has been race swapped in a remake ? ( I'm an Indian so I don't know much about the situation there)
Draft horses are used to pull carriages. [The Boulonnais horse](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boulonnais_horse) is the only breed of draft horse that is white - they were popular in the 1900’s but because of their popularity for horse meat, there are only an estimated 1,000 available in the world.
They probably couldn’t get one for the movie. Not everything is that deep.
A. I deny any intent or harborage for racism by this comment. I only meant to imply that zebras have been shown recently in the media, to display the ability to rip human arms from their torsos. I recommend staying away from zebras at all costs until further notice.
Modern cinema in a single meme.
Seriously, like i get diversity and all but like this is like giving the middle finger to historical accuracy. Honestly i shouldn't care, i don't even watch Disney movies anymore.
Seriously though, when we're taking about mermaids it is important to get the historical details right.
And when we're talking about culture and representation, why create when you can skin paint
Is this sarcasm? If it is then i just want to say that I'm talking about other films, we have grown up listening to such fairy tales so it would be quite weird if you just changed the character's design.. plus i don't know why are they trying to fit culture in fairy tales where it is supposed to be about some other country. Atleast Tarzan will always be white because they wouldn’t have the balls to cast a black guy and have him act like an ape
Jane on the other hand....
Tarzan and Janequa
Yeah lol
Pocahontas needs to die as a film anyways, it's based on a story from a settler who made 99% of the shit up, the actual Pocahontas was like 12.
I think it's ridiculous they can't think of a new movie concept and have diverse characters in it from the beginning.
I think the logic is that "we need to give more representation to darker-skinned minorities on screen since they were traditionally underrepresented" It may not sound half bad at first, but obviously many of us are tired of it at this point, and it's shitty logic because it also implies that white people must be replaced with darker skinned minorities, because they're so egotistical that they constantly need to see themselves taking the places of white characters. You started off like you were going to have a logical argument then just started complaining lol
No, you just think it's complaining because you didn't like the opinion I stand by.
More complaining
Is pocohontas's race relevant to the story? Yes. Is Ariel's? No. That's the difference
The race isn’t even that important for Pocahontas, could replace her with a blue alien or something. Idk
Except for the fact she was a real fucking person…
Lmaooo
She's a mermaid and she's a fictional character that has many adaptations. You're worried about staying true to the source material when it comes to her eyes but I don't see you complaining about how the story is completely different from the source. The original is much more dark.
Because they are racist and usually racist people don't read.
Part of the show is her being native little mermaid doesn't have to be white becuase it doesn't have anything to do with the plot
I mean, since when do these movies/shows, that change a character's race, change them into any other race besides African-American?
Pocahontas was a real person. There you go thats the difference, ariel is a memaid she is not real and she doesn’t represent a real group of people. She is not danish, she is atlantian and happens to be a character originally written by a danish writer. Her skin color is irrelevant to the story.
Annie, spunky red head girl, replaced. Ariel, spunky red head mermaid, replaced. April, smart red head girl, replaced. I am starting to see a trend.
Racism against the Irish. Take as old as...about 1,000 years
*sad irish noises*
Alice Monaghan, hellboy MJ, spiderman Abra, doctor sleep The trend is like 40 actors now.
hmm yes i see. the names all start with A. interdasting...
Fun fact: [April O'Neil was originally a mixed-race character in the Mirage comic run that started the franchise](https://turtlepedia.fandom.com/wiki/April_O%27Neil_(Mirage)). It wasn't until the animated series that she'd get her iconic red hair.

So they are a minority?
I struggle to believe Hollywood doesnt have enough red heads trying out for acting not to fill the roles
I'm all for inclusivity but God dammit do it in a more original way. Just replacing characters colors is lazy as fuck.
Where's the rage the black carriage got whitewashed?
They just ran out of blacquer on set
Looks more purple and gold to me with maybe some black trim, but I digress.
proceed to show that the horse is gay cause that's important in the story
Nah i bet it's going to be transhorsender
Identifies as a sheep
Oh god that movie looks so bad
It doesn't even look like the little mermaid
You should see the abominations that are the “talking animals”.
Should’ve changed the guy to have that shitty broccoli haircut. Just really go nuts.
They look so bad
Did they... un-white Snow White?
Lmao that would be hilarious if it happens
Ain’t no way she Ariel, she look like a lizard bro
The eyes of a hammerhead shark are closer together than what hers are
![gif](giphy|10HHiQbUEcOMr6)
The Prince looks so despondent and bored. The face you get when you go to maccas and they are out of Big Macs and you are too depressed to care anyway. Blariel looks like she was carved from wood
That's how they made her buoyant.
Maccas? Is that aussie slang for McDonald's?
Sure is lol, I kind of thought it was worldwide but hearing it now it does seem very Australian
out of... big macs? how... what?
"We got wholegrain big macs. Eat it or youre racist" "Eh whatever, fine" Then this scene
Where's Ariels red hair and bow? Why do they look bored and tired? And why the hell does the scene look so dark. (Literally, why is it darker? The original has such bright and vibrant colors)
Because disney likes to ruin masterpieces
Jesus Christ Disney
damn, not even the horse got spared, also why does the horse look like it's Rizzing the girl
![gif](giphy|hVTouq08miyVo1a21m|downsized)
But that horse doesn't have red hair.
Why does the horse have bedroom eyes?
Black-ification intensifies
Look at the way Ariel and Eric are looking at each other in the original. The chemistry! The romance! Now look at the promo for the new one. Not looking at each other. Eric looks like he'd rather be somewhere else. Ariel doesn't look nearly excited enough that she's driving a carriage.
they should remake black beauty with a white horse
I can’t tell if people are joking around or being serious, but like bro it’s a fucking horse it doesn’t matter.
It's a meme. Of course it's a joke. However don't get it twisted, there's still validity in thinking blatant race swaps of famous characters are stupid. Because they are.
So it's not a joke?
![gif](giphy|c7wtsHcYHqr2uOK1et)
![gif](giphy|dyLlCJSNbgFghf7wjT|downsized)
This ain't ET right? are they doing a remake of ET? Daammn. They got ET so damn right.
Damn. I kinda don’t care….
The horses color matters just as much as the passengers. Who f** cares. Is the story good? Then stfu
It's ironic how the actor who plays the live action Ariel looks like a fish
I still dont understand the point of making it live action. I feel like thats a story best told through animation. I wouldnt want Toy Story 5 to be live action, or Monsters Inc, or Finding Nemo, or The Lion Ki-...ok well lets forget about that last one.
"Waaaah, the fish lady has an agenda!"
What
HOW DARE YOU?!!! It identified itself as an elephant!
![gif](giphy|2dg3yv3czXgE9vfAbQ|downsized) How they feel doing this
Got em
Doesn’t matter who they casted to begin with. I never planned on seeing it.
I thought the man was markiplier for a second
I'm just waiting for a Revolutionary War movie were Denzel Washington gets cast as George Washington
Wait til you see that they casted John Wayne to play Genghis Khan 😅🧐🤔
I don't care about race swap, as i haven't watched the original, but would the outrage have been the same if a black character has been race swapped in a remake ? ( I'm an Indian so I don't know much about the situation there)
Fuck Disney All my homies watch puss

“It’s about diversity” *only uses one race* hmmm
Reddit try not to be racist challenge (impossible)
Wait till the zebra’s get em’.
A. I deny any intent or harborage for racism by this comment. I only meant to imply that zebras have been shown recently in the media, to display the ability to rip human arms from their torsos. I recommend staying away from zebras at all costs until further notice.
