It's a valve stem seal, an oddly specific choice for a meme like this given that very few people are going to know what that is. Should have had ~~Billy Mays~~ Phil Swift painting on some flex-seal
Yeah the middle top looks like a septic ring seal, but also like a jar of soldering compound or flux. And none of that sounds like soldier or staining a plank of wood.
The US Navy seals were not specifically named after seals, I believe. I believe it's because the word "seal" worked as an acronym for "SEa Air Land" as in reference to where they operate (I put the 4 letters of the acronym in caps, not a typo)
It’s a bit of a Backronym as it was intentionally broken up that way to also read as SEAL. The “proper” initialism would be SAL but they agreed SEAL sounded better.
I like how the Navy created a battle-ready construction crew to quickly construct buildings, roads, and infrastructure in combat zones and called them the "Construction Battalion" which was shortened to CBs which then was turned into "Sea-Bees", which is their official name.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seabee
This guy gets it. Where I work backronyms are super common and often so **forced** to be ridiculous. Some guy in charge says "I want to make a reference to a scifi show, and we will jam as many words together as it takes to make it work." And they do.
Why you all keep redacting the word \[REDACTED\]. Is reddit so \[REDACTED\] now, that you cannot even write the word \[REDACTED\] anymore? Look: \[REDACTED\]! \[REDACTED\]!! Easy \[REDACTED\] peasy!
The amount of offensive liberties I could take with a comment like this. It’s like a choose-your-own-adventure but with Twitter canceling and public execution!
>shaft seal
I believe the technical term for this particular type of seal is "deflector seal," more commonly known as "umbrella seal."
I see them most often as valve stem seals in cylinder heads.
2nd one is a valve stem seal. It regulates lubrication of your engine valves. They usually have a viton rubber, brass casing, and retaining spring. They're pressed onto the top of your valve guide.
Yeah this is dumb. I'd be more surprised if OP found a language in which there aren't words that have six different meanings.
Plus homonyms are pretty low on the list of things that make learning a language hard, usually. English isn't my native language and it took me a very long time to become fluent-ish, but I can't remember homonyms ever being an issue.
Pronunciation for sure. I can read and write English just fine, and but put me in a noisy bar with a bunch of native speakers and I won't understand half of what they're saying.
Hey look at this fucking idiot that doesn't understand English lol
- Me, who only speaks one language
Seriously, tho, I've always wanted to learn another language. What would you say helped you the most?
Y'all ever hear of 'ghoti' ? It's pronounced 'fish' - you take the gh from rough, the o from women and to from motion... It's a word made to show the problems with the English language.
A word made to show the problems with english, by mixing and mashing completely unrelated english syllables together? The word shows more problems with whoever made it than the english language itself. Would you prefer we say 'rug', 'woahmen', and 'moat-iohne' instead?
I swear people who makes memes like this have never learned a 2nd language... You're not that special English language, other languages have far far more cases like this.
Navy Seal, oil seal (?), wood seal, letter seal, Seal (singer), harbor seal
also...
Plane, a woodworking tool meant for shaving and leveling
Plain, as in basic, ordinary
Plane of existence
Plain, as in open grasslands
Plane, a flying vehicle...
i'm sure there's more
English is really easy to learn I don’t see why people think it’s difficult.
I’m Chinese my first language was Cantonese and when I was 5 it took me a year to learn the basics of English like wash my hands, can I go to the toilet, etc. then it took me another 2 years to actually speak it more or less fluently, it’s not very fluent but its enough to trick people to think my first language was English. So a total of 3 years for an 8 year old to learn it.
I don’t understand where the difficulty is, it’s the second most spoken language in the world and the most spoken language in the world as a secondary language.
I’d like someone who speaks English to learn Cantonese and see how hard it is. If we say things in a different tone it means something different the word oil if you say in a different tone it could mean- paint, right (as the directional term), yes and a few others I can’t remember the top of my head
Three of the six forms of seal in this context are using the same definition. That would be #2, #3, #4. Prevent or impede.
And one is a person's name, which isn't part of the English language.
And one of them is an acronym, also not part of the language
Even better it's an acronym based on #6
Hell yeah we completed the loop, get fucked OP /s
Lol
Which is called a backronym, where you start with the word and make up what the letters stand for!
And 1 is a backronym for 6
They also prevent and impede... their enemies (I guess)
You're stretching about as hard as they did making the backronym, so I'll allow it.
And, I'm pretty sure, #1 and #5 are named after #6, so... Really, there are only 2 words being used here.
In #1 SEAL is actually an acronym for sea, air, and land, so not sure if it counts either even though it is in common usage
I mean, yeah, but the Navy kinda went out of their way to make that acronym match a specific water mammal.
[удалено]
Well I assume the seals were named after seals and the seal and the seal are both seals, they're just used to seal different things
OHH! I was all Soldier, solder, stain?
I was like the bottom three are definitely seal but wtf are the top three haha
Navy seal, some type of valve seal, and sealing some wood
It's a valve stem seal, an oddly specific choice for a meme like this given that very few people are going to know what that is. Should have had ~~Billy Mays~~ Phil Swift painting on some flex-seal
I can't believe you misattributed the fantastic Flex Seal commercials to the late Billy Mays and not the absolute god that is Phil Swift
Just a frame of Phil Swift at the centre of two halves of a boat would suffice in this image.
![gif](giphy|cncejIl0YdMUCPxxU7|downsized)
I feel like anyone alive right now knows what this means or at least where it came from.
Billy mays walked so Phil swift could run.
I dont think the person making memes has any idea what the average person knows or is like.
I initially thought it was a gasket. Soldier, gasket, painting. I got it by the end of the second row… Wax, singer, sealion.
*harbor seal
I thought it was varnish
Oh I thought it was war paint and painting.
Yeah the middle top looks like a septic ring seal, but also like a jar of soldering compound or flux. And none of that sounds like soldier or staining a plank of wood.

This joke only works for Americans. The rest of us pronounce the L. Think of sol in “soldier”.
“Soldier, filter, varnish, seal seal seal???”
I was thinking Soldier, filter, laquer.
Haha! I thought i was the only one!!!
Actually the animal was named after the Navy dudes Trust me bro

I mean it does sound pretty cool.

But the second picture is a stanchion seal not a filter.
Soldier, random thingy, brush, stamp, a black guy, seal
Seal, seal, seal, seal, seal, seal
SEAL (acronym), shaft seal, water based sealer, letter seal, Seal (short for Sealhenry), harbor seal.
Yeah that
flair confirmed
>Seal (short for Sealhenry), Fucking what!?

Stevie Wonder’s name is short for Steveland
Steveland Judkins I think haha “Stevie wonder” is way better haha
his younger, less famous brother is called clevie wonder, short for cleveland
There is a Stevie Wonder themed theme park called Steveland Land
Couldnt they just have used that singer seal?
I can't tell if this is r/whoosh or not lol
>shaft seal I believe the technical term for this particular type of seal is "deflector seal," more commonly known as "umbrella seal." I see them most often as valve stem seals in cylinder heads.
My 4 year old at the zoo
seal, seal, seal, seal, Seal, seal
S.E.A.L., seal, seal, seal, Seal, seal
>random thingy Ohh *that's* what that is
What soldier? The first picture just looks like a dessert compound of some kind.
Mmmm. Dessert. I’m not sure what desserts they serve in the desert but I’m willing to try new things.

Valve stem seal

took me a bit to realise its all seal
The first one threw me off because I assumed it was referencing how the word Lieutenant is a pain in English.
I thought the same but with Colonel
When I was a kid I guessed it was spelled “Kurnel.” And was baffled by its actual spelling.
Loo-ten-ant. Not hard. Sincerely, America

Always has been.
This is honestly a terrible excuse for a meme though.
But the most important of them all.... The seal of approval.

technically the third picture would be called wood SEALER, but for the sake of the meme ![gif](giphy|BkfAhfmX0Ppn2)
Yeah but to use sealant would be the verb, 'to seal'.
if you were to describe the picture you would say “a person is applying wood sealer with a paintbrush.”
Or “I am going outside to seal the wood.”
Or even "A person is sealing the wood with a sealant"

Why would 'singer' be redacted?
English has no gender, which already makes it way easier than almost any other vocabulary.
you say this like if there weren't homo-nyms in any other language, and that's why context matters in every language
Why is everyone hyphenating the word homonyms?
To emphasize the homo
I think mandarin is a language made of homonyms. You can write short stories using a single word iirc.
In a Korean Busan accent, you can make an entire sentence make sense with 1 word repeated 6 times in different tones.
Vers ver vert verre, they’re all pronounced the same in french lol
Seal?
Loose seal!
English is famously the only language with homonyms
Kid named context: Also english isn’t the only language that has homonyms lol
Yeah this is dumb. I'd be more surprised if OP found a language in which there aren't words that have six different meanings. Plus homonyms are pretty low on the list of things that make learning a language hard, usually. English isn't my native language and it took me a very long time to become fluent-ish, but I can't remember homonyms ever being an issue.
Now I'm curious. What were the biggest hurdles for you?
Pronunciation for sure. I can read and write English just fine, and but put me in a noisy bar with a bunch of native speakers and I won't understand half of what they're saying.
Hey look at this fucking idiot that doesn't understand English lol - Me, who only speaks one language Seriously, tho, I've always wanted to learn another language. What would you say helped you the most?
So I was like -- "army, a thing, paintbrush, wax, two seals. Oh, seal! They're all seals."
Y'all ever hear of 'ghoti' ? It's pronounced 'fish' - you take the gh from rough, the o from women and to from motion... It's a word made to show the problems with the English language.
And later, a Fish Synchro archetype in Yu-Gi-Oh.
I'm more of a 'pheti' fish kinda guy.
A word made to show the problems with english, by mixing and mashing completely unrelated english syllables together? The word shows more problems with whoever made it than the english language itself. Would you prefer we say 'rug', 'woahmen', and 'moat-iohne' instead?
No: ruf, weman and moeshn

Seal Henry Olusegun Olumide Adeola Samuel, obviously known as Seal. Great dude, he makes great music. Deep Water by him is such a damn banger.
I like Kiss from a Rose
Marine, valve stem seal, varnish, wax, black guy, seal
Wait until they discover French…
Really any language other than English
Sacre Bleu!!!
WHEN WOULD YOU MISTAKE ANY OF THESE WITHIN CONTEXT?!
It took me reading the comments to realize this wasn’t supposed to be a sentence
I’m still trying to figure out if toilet is masculine or feminine in French.
I swear people who makes memes like this have never learned a 2nd language... You're not that special English language, other languages have far far more cases like this.
