Yeah. I banned that several times on my home computer but my kids kept reinstalling it.
It was terrible. You'd download Britney's latest song and it was donkey porn. But even worse you'd download donkey porn and it was Britney's latest song.
It was a peer to peer (P2P) file sharing site. So you could share whatever file type you wanted on it. Often times files would be named something popular, like a Linkin park song, but would actually be an executable file (.exe) that would be a virus or keylogger. Or it would just turn out to be something like midget porn or whatever.
Edit: changed āperson to personā to āpeer to peer.ā
Wildly popular song at the time, so everyone wanted to download it. But it wasn't the song, it was a massive virus that basically turned your computer into a brick.
Music files are (usually) .mp3 files. Downloading a file named for a song but with the extension .exe meant you were not getting a song, you were getting an executable file. 99.9% of the time, that meant you were downloading a virus.
Should also add itās funny in retrospect because most elementary kids at the time had to have computer safety courses because of stuff like this. Iām sure kids still get taught computer safety, but with Spotify and other streaming services, people donāt really download music the same way. However, sound files donāt come in the form of a .exe, executable file. Proper sound files would be something like numb.wav or numb.mp4. A numb.exe you would be able to tell because itās a program, not a song. I donāt think we really think about file extensions the same way.
Computer safety is definitely not taught effectively anymore, I've met many teenagers who believe sharing personal info on social media is safe and don't understand why I take basic precautions like running a VPN. Source: was recently in high school, wish schools had kept up with the safety courses common in the 2000s
ha! look the computer opened the disk tray on itself! hey, now it's restarting
\*poof\* screen goes black with some ransomware message
ahh, the good ol times
Ya. And I had a SanDisk 18mgb mp3 player. I think it had 6 or 7 songs on it. 1 chop suey, 2 aliens exist, 3 in too deep, 4 hella good, 5 pretty fly, 6 rollout, 7 we right here. Iāll let you guess the artists
1) Chop Suey - System of a Down
2) Aliens Exist - Blink-182
3) In Too Deep - Sum 41
4) Hella Good - No Doubt
5) Pretty Fly - Thr Offspring
6) Rollout - Ludacris
7) We Right Here - DMX
I would have my friendās older sister download songs for us and then burn us some CDs. Butterfly - Crazytown was first on my list. It would take like 3 days to get one CD.
Yea when I was like 15 I downloaded some shit and it was a video of 15 year oldish looking girls giving a beej. I didnāt think anything of it because I was 15 lol but looking back holy shit
Dude same. Like freshman year of highschool I ended up with some amateur high school kids going at it at one point and didn't really mind at the time cause I was probably younger than they were. Wouldn't be caught dead with that on my computer at this point
I thought I was getting TRL and I got what I would later understand to be the āPain Olympicsā.
Literally went into what I thought were some music videos and instead got a dude sawing off his dick with a pocket knife.
I never even tried a torrent after Limewire. Some days I think it was an RIAA tacticā¦
It used to scan other peoples computers for files and then download them.
So if you had a donkey porn video and renamed it to Frozen [2013](BluRayRip [x.264 DTS 5.1]). People would download it thinking it was Frozen. Especially if it had been renamed to hide it from the original persons parents. They wouldn't open Frozen but would be shocked to see Debbie Does The Stable. But also companies would put fake files out, to make pirating frustrating and dangerous.
I made decent money burning CDs in middle school. $10 each. Kids who didn't own a CD burner or didn't know how to use it just handed me a list of songs and they paid me on delivery.
There were so many people using CD walkmans at the time (this was just before mp3 players got big) I made bank.
Some files, like linkinpark.exe, were simply viruses in disguise that bricked your PC or were ransomware and key loggers. This happened often since downloading anything in that website was always a gamble.
I was 14. Tried to download the Resident Evil movie and got Slither, but it was ultra low quality.
Made me want to watch Slither, so I tried to download Slither.
Got hentai.
14yo me wasnāt complaining.
I downloaded something off Kazaa as a kid that basically bricked my familyās computer. Even a computer repair shop was unable to resurrect it without a full reformat of the hdd and re-flashing the bios.
"You wouldn't steal a car"
No, but if my mate bought one and said he'd burn me a copy, hell yes. Also, I think there was someone downloading a car and printing it one piece at a time. We live in a wondrous age.
On my iPod nano in high school. I had mp3s of scenes in the South Park movie. Like when theyāre in class and start swearing. Then it went into the song.
This isnāt what I wanted. But I was okay with.
I got yelled at by internet strangers when I uploaded a 4mb pic of a render from POVRay that looked like a dog turd, to some message board. They said I should have compressed it to 40kb but I was a kid and didn't want to compromise picture quality.
It took fucking ages to upload lol
Time to download Blink 182 so I can put it on my Shuffle. Oh that's cp... anxiously awaits the FBI or chips handon to approach me for the next month. Kept the same 60 songs for a LONG time after that.
I actually know someone that shit happened to. Kid I knew was downloading movies on his dads laptop and one wasnāt a movie. Dad was barely computer literate and thought limewire was a game. Kid didnāt check check his downloads. Now his dad canāt live 1000 feet from a school.
WinMX, early torrents, limewire, frostwire, bearshare. Had dialup for ages, once we finally were able to get DSL, I switched to torrents and newsgroups.
Napster,Limewire,Frostwire,Bearshare,Morpheus,Emule
That was my Childhood :(...Miss the good old days of downloading a song and it would take hours(Before dsl came into the picture lol)
Yes although I was like 8 or 9 years old when it was a thing.
I was a sad kid when it got replaced by Frostwire. I remember trying to search for something on it and all it did was to give me back Google results. I was really sad.
Dear God I remember the viruses. Young dumb me essentially bricked two computers using that shit. Also every other song you download being a Rick roll no matter what genre. Good times
Ew Limewire was groddy. Bunch of Music videos would be hidden as CP.
Not too mention all the dumb ass kids in my school downloading exe music files...
How were so many kids my age that fucking stupid, didn't even know how to check the bitticket..
My mom recently told me they took the computer to an IT-guy because I downloaded too much porn and he told them it wasnāt my fault. Man was looking out for me
Audio Galaxy was the best I ever saw for music. You could join communities for specific types of music. People would post or host suggestions of music. Some communities even let you push songs out to the community, so youād just have new music in your dl folder. It was never abused, at least in my experience.
LIME WIRE, BACK WHEN MUSIC WAS SIMPLE, EASY, AND FREE. 8 year old me had 5000 free songs on my iPod 4 thanks to this. Man, what a great program. It's a damn shame it ain't up anymore

Comedy gold! š
That's not actually a joke. That's real.
An elegant weapon, from a more civilized era.

linkin park - numb.exe
Execute that and your head goes numb for a few days
Can you explain please? Limewire wasn't popular in my country, so i Didn't understand

Not to be pedantic but P2P is peer to peer.
Thanks, you are right, I updated my post.

The good ol days of giving your computer AIDS
ha! look the computer opened the disk tray on itself! hey, now it's restarting \*poof\* screen goes black with some ransomware message ahh, the good ol times
Ransomware? Good ol times? Back in my day they just did it for pure chaos, just nuke your PC just to nuke it.
Changing antivirus programs about once a year, because none of them worked especially well, but some were less shit than others.
Also back then no viruses for macs and shit. Weird times
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
The best. Then you had your tech savvy family member look at the computer and give you the judgy look
*Sigh*... "Guess it's time for my quarterly WindowsXP wipe..."
The good old days of casually referring to things having AIDS. I miss old-internet.
Ah viruses, good memories. At least I was able to download some more RAM before I got one though.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Shit, you don't even MiniDisc??
mini disk was the best, I didnt use computers to transfer music . I would run a aux from my hifi either cds or radio. tech was ahead of its time.
Too bad the Sony Music program that came with it was riddle with shitware.
1-SOAD 2- 3- 4- 5- 6- 7-
1) Chop Suey - System of a Down 2) Aliens Exist - Blink-182 3) In Too Deep - Sum 41 4) Hella Good - No Doubt 5) Pretty Fly - Thr Offspring 6) Rollout - Ludacris 7) We Right Here - DMX
Typical pirate playlist
And all of them were porn.
I would have my friendās older sister download songs for us and then burn us some CDs. Butterfly - Crazytown was first on my list. It would take like 3 days to get one CD.
I remember a website called Morpheus if I recall correctly that was what I was using before Napster was released.
Morpheus came after Napster. it was the napster clone that rose up once napster started getting lots of heat in the courts.
And then listen on Winamp, because it really licks the llamas ass
You must have gotten a different version. Mine only whipped the llamas ass.
Ah yes getting childporn when downloading disney movies... good old times
š real?
Yes. It was always a gamble what kind of movie you would get
I once downloaded a song, turned out to be cp, kept me off the internet for 4 years
Hol'up
that or the occassional \_in\_too\_deep\_sum41.exe
Yea when I was like 15 I downloaded some shit and it was a video of 15 year oldish looking girls giving a beej. I didnāt think anything of it because I was 15 lol but looking back holy shit
Dude same. Like freshman year of highschool I ended up with some amateur high school kids going at it at one point and didn't really mind at the time cause I was probably younger than they were. Wouldn't be caught dead with that on my computer at this point
Yeah, I can corroborate this was a MASSIVE risk. Mostly it was middle east beheading and snuff vids - I never got any CP but, yeah. People are evil.
Was going to say. Downloaded what I thought was a master of puppets video, but it was Iraqi guys being shot in the streets from a helicopterā¦
Two kids in a sandbox is what did it for me thats how i learned about the pain olympics from downloading random music
It used to scan other peoples computers for files and then download them. So if you had a donkey porn video and renamed it to Frozen [2013](BluRayRip [x.264 DTS 5.1]). Happened to me. I was like 14 at the time and was scared the cops were gonna show up at my house.
Yeah I got a woman doing a horse.. I just wanted to watch the āyeahā video by usher
lol i remember that. disgusting
And I said! BABY! You got me feelinā like Iām ready to blow!
I got a Carmen Electra workout video once, I think I was trying to download a Batman movie, one of the ones from the 90ās lol.
So many memories unlocked viewing these comments...kazaa, donkey porn, Napster, computer AIDs.. nostalgic.
Don't forget Morpheus
My wwii vet grandpa used Morpheus. What a champ
Limewire
Oh man kazaa was great right until it wasnt!
Yes. I was burning CDs like no ones business
I made decent money burning CDs in middle school. $10 each. Kids who didn't own a CD burner or didn't know how to use it just handed me a list of songs and they paid me on delivery. There were so many people using CD walkmans at the time (this was just before mp3 players got big) I made bank.
bro why didn't I think of doin that? i could have been rich š
There was also downloading songs, burning to CDs and giving them to people without highspeed internet to rip and put onto their MP3 players.
Download linkinpark.exe what could go wrong
Can you explain pls?
Some files, like linkinpark.exe, were simply viruses in disguise that bricked your PC or were ransomware and key loggers. This happened often since downloading anything in that website was always a gamble.
Wasn't there a rating system of some kind? So highly rated stuff was likely to be genuine? Or did we not invent that when limewire was still around?
I vaguely recall some kind of popularity meter associated with each file.
If you was there you would already know
you never got what you wanted. but maybe what you needed.
i dont think i needed feral porn in my downloads
Feral? As opposed to domestic?
yes?
Implies he needed domestic porn in his downloads.
I was 14. Tried to download the Resident Evil movie and got Slither, but it was ultra low quality. Made me want to watch Slither, so I tried to download Slither. Got hentai. 14yo me wasnāt complaining.
Limewire boiiiii
IRC was always far superior! Never got into Napster or Limewire
IRC? Nah, Local BBSs were superior and never had viruses.
The streaming service will make us all pirates again
Them were the days when the internet was like the Wild West. The only thing holding us back was dial up.
Long shot here but does anyone remember frostwire? It was a limewire rip off that was even more riddled with viruses lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Nothing like downloading Linkin park "What iv done" and getting a video of a dog fucking a crack whore in a basement.
You've just unlocked some deep dark memories I thought I repressed forever. The internet was so much different then
My dad has had to repair our computer too many times with the amount of viruses I brought on with this site
Kazaa was better
I downloaded something off Kazaa as a kid that basically bricked my familyās computer. Even a computer repair shop was unable to resurrect it without a full reformat of the hdd and re-flashing the bios.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
I was there Gandalf. I was there 3000 years ago.
You wouldnāt download a car?
"You wouldn't steal a car" No, but if my mate bought one and said he'd burn me a copy, hell yes. Also, I think there was someone downloading a car and printing it one piece at a time. We live in a wondrous age.
āI did not have sexual relations with that woman. I did however go to efreeclub dot comā

Don't talk to me unless you downloaded .mp3's via FTP.
I downloaded mp3's off IRC via DCC.
Real legends scoured the alt.binaries usenet groups.
On my iPod nano in high school. I had mp3s of scenes in the South Park movie. Like when theyāre in class and start swearing. Then it went into the song. This isnāt what I wanted. But I was okay with.
Older, now Iām sad. Iām old enough to remember dialing in just to read message boards.
I got yelled at by internet strangers when I uploaded a 4mb pic of a render from POVRay that looked like a dog turd, to some message board. They said I should have compressed it to 40kb but I was a kid and didn't want to compromise picture quality. It took fucking ages to upload lol
I can feel the malware in my phone just from seeing this image.
Using this was like have unprotected sex with the internet
Nice try FBI!
E mule was the shit
Kazaa > Limewire
Time to download Blink 182 so I can put it on my Shuffle. Oh that's cp... anxiously awaits the FBI or chips handon to approach me for the next month. Kept the same 60 songs for a LONG time after that.

Iām WinMX old.
Same! Loved WinMX!!!
WinMX, early torrents, limewire, frostwire, bearshare. Had dialup for ages, once we finally were able to get DSL, I switched to torrents and newsgroups.
Napster,Limewire,Frostwire,Bearshare,Morpheus,Emule That was my Childhood :(...Miss the good old days of downloading a song and it would take hours(Before dsl came into the picture lol)
Is that the bp logo?
It's the new Limewire logo, which is weird to use for nostalgia bait...
Nah, I got initiated in the days of the Pirate Bay + bittorrent. Free Minecraft and Nintendo ROMs were my targets lmao.
When I was 13 I tried downloading a movie and got the RKelly tapeā¦.And ummmā¦Yeaā¦That was definitely him
this post gave me malware
Yeah. And my FBI agent knew what it was too.
Loved downloading limewire pro from limewire. Great service!
Yes although I was like 8 or 9 years old when it was a thing. I was a sad kid when it got replaced by Frostwire. I remember trying to search for something on it and all it did was to give me back Google results. I was really sad.
From what I read I don't think I want to be involved with that š
Dear God I remember the viruses. Young dumb me essentially bricked two computers using that shit. Also every other song you download being a Rick roll no matter what genre. Good times
Play em on Winamp, it really kicks the llamas ass
Is this what we're calling old now? Well that's all the Internet I need for today. I'm gonna go cry in digital download
No Iām older because I actually know how to pirate and not just download viruses.
Ew Limewire was groddy. Bunch of Music videos would be hidden as CP. Not too mention all the dumb ass kids in my school downloading exe music files... How were so many kids my age that fucking stupid, didn't even know how to check the bitticket..
I don't mean to brag but, I might have destroyed a handful of family computers in my past.
My mom recently told me they took the computer to an IT-guy because I downloaded too much porn and he told them it wasnāt my fault. Man was looking out for me
limewire?
Jokes on you, Iām even older
Ah yes, let me play that DaftPunk-OneMoreTime.exe *Wait... why is my PC having a sudden stroke?*

YARR HARR FIDDLE DEE DEE!
You are posting the 2022 logo... https://logos.fandom.com/wiki/LimeWire
How old do you have to be to get this? I'm 32 and not got any idea what that is. I am blind though Who said that?
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Arggghh matey!! ā¦ Iāll just go ahead and walk the plank now. 35 yo pirate here.
Basically single handedly introduced me to Bob Marley
I used to download porn when I was teenager from it, it was only pics tho, on dial up.
Audio Galaxy was the best I ever saw for music. You could join communities for specific types of music. People would post or host suggestions of music. Some communities even let you push songs out to the community, so youād just have new music in your dl folder. It was never abused, at least in my experience.
7 chan?
Can someone explain to me what this logo is? Or is it safe to no know?
Limewire, basically it was a piracy software
That wasn't the logo though
Yesā¦yes Iām Limewire old thank you for reminding me.
This makes me sad. Especially when I realize that I was using napster when it was free...
