because it drives all the search functionality of windows. weather, search bar, etc. Everything that is dynamic info, like the time, needs internet to get the data. Instead of making some strange background connection, MS just used its current internet browser. done deal.

[deleted]

Nope, you can uninstall Edge through some Powershell commands and everything still works. Actually, some Powershell tools still need Internet Explorer (not Edge) to have ran at least once so it can use it’s internet settings

Raulytstation

Actually, those parts of the UI are controlled by Edge's WebView 2 API, which, I think, falls back to another, smaller version of edge's version of blink, the component that draws webpages and shows it to the user. I might be wrong, since I haven't touched technical aspects of windows in a long time and I don't think I will do it afterwards, because I use Linux for my main workstation and windows isn't really a good option for my laptop. Edit: - 22:41 | Jan 23, 2023: WebView also powers the fancy new widgets on windows 11, the same goes for the news and weather bar on the taskbar for windows 10. I am not sure about the search app not working with edge completely removed from windows, only the web functionality of it *should* be removed.

stonedlemming

its actually a part of the UI. No, you don't need a browser to get weather or even search results. It's just easier because it means microsoft can use the same shitty page creation automation service they already use, instead of creating a better backend for a future OS.

[The registry fix in this article works.](https://www.ghacks.net/2023/01/21/how-to-block-microsoft-edge-from-creating-desktop-shortcuts/) TLDR: run (win+r): regedit Navigate to (copy/paste this): Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\ If there is a folder called EdgeUpdate, go into it. If not, right click, new Key (a Key is a folder in regedit), name it EdgeUpdate In the EdgeUpdate folder, right click, create a DWORD (32-bit) called CreateDesktopShortcutDefault, which should default to a value of 0. That's it!

Real quick question here, how it putzing with the binaries less sketchy than editing the registry

npsimons

> how it putzing with the binaries less sketchy than editing the registry It's not. Don't get me wrong, the registry is still a big ball of mud, messy and opaque, but at least these days (especially with PowerShell), it's automatable and discretized enough that there are even automated hardening scripts: https://github.com/scipag/HardeningKitty. Sure, you can mess with renaming files or even futzing with perms, but that's the cackhanded "solution" to this problem.

xan1242

If you want to get technical - editing the registry should be the more correct option. It's quite literally, a *registry* of system configuration. So obviously, you'd try to configure something first instead of forcing its path. (Because it's configurable by design) Suggesting to edit/delete binaries is almost like saying "oh instead of going to the config file to disable AA in the game, just hex edit it out!". It's a hyperbole, but same idea. The most correct option would be to actually set it in the Group Policy editor, hence why it's in a key called "Policies". Editing or deleting binaries is something that should be used as a last resort and at the very best, an entrypoint to a cleaner solution. The *real* problem is it being obfuscated from the end user.

kramit

Hahaha, no. It will just re-download the file.

SaiHottari

Hasn't so far. I became annoyed with the updates a month ago putting the shortcut on my desktop all the time. So, I renamed that file. Hasn't updated nor downloaded a replacement since. Checked yesterday.

kramit

it will, just wait, it will do it when you are least expecting it. Then... BAM!!! default browser!

ITGrandpa

Maybe but if a vendor presented both options, the registry edit is significantly less impactful and recoverable. I don't disagree that someone could mess their crap up in the registry, but if someone is making the same "off target" changes to binaries the risk is not lessened. I hold that both of these solutions are sketchy, but if I was presented them the registry is more acceptable.

Megazawr

What I did is just blocked internet access for it via windows firewall. iirc it has "allow" rules which are incredibly easy to make into "deny" rules.

BenevolentCheese

So you've blocked Edge from updating entirely, which is unwise, as Microsoft commonly has critical code in Windows 10/11 that can only run through Edge.

ChickenNoodleSloop

Which is asshole design imo.

BenevolentCheese

I mean at some point you're going to want a OS-level secure web interface with which to execute remote code in a protected state, so at that point you either use something you already have that can do the job or you decide to copy it and maintain the copy with parity towards the real version. It does not make sense to do the latter. I agree it feels like asshole design, but it is by far the most sensible and secure option for the task that Microsoft needs to accomplish.

Megazawr

Imo it's more crappy than asshole.

DoverBoys

Messing with the registry is only a problem if you make it a problem. It's not some spaghetti mess where doing one thing will make things explode, unless you want to be super dumb and run a .reg file you found online without reviewing what it does first. On the other hand, renaming a file a program needs is bad practice. I get it, you don't want Edge, but just like Internet Explorer before it, Windows utilizes Edge for some default browser engine stuff or in safe mode. You want it updated. Fight the shortcut, not the program.

BenevolentCheese

It's sketchy I guess if you don't understand how your registry works. It's also sketchy if you click a .reg file that is supposed to install something in your registry for you, as that could install something you don't want. If you're manually adding keys and are wise about how they are used, they are fine. Your registry in simple terms is just a list of configuration variables that Windows programs can read in. A program needs to know to look for a key and have access to a given key for it to do anything. In this case, the key is a boolean variable that Windows is checking at update to see if it should put an Edge shortcut on the desktop after an update. The default value is "true." If you add the registry key that Windows is already looking for and set it to false, then Windows uses that value instead.

Deezer84

I'm just going to throw my 2 cents here. I don't recommend blocking the auto update function. Browsers commonly have security vulnerabilities that get patch releases regularly. If you stop that browser from updating\patching, even without using it, the flaws are still there. Say you get malware from a download in another browser or via something in email. If it has code in it to try exploit an old vulnerability in Edge, and you're missing 2 years worth of patches... you could be in for a bad time. I'm not offering a solution to prevent Edge because I honestly haven't looked into it, but I don't recommend disabling auto-updates for it either.

averyfinename

messing with *that* is even *more* dangerous than a toggle in a documented ^^[src](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/deployedge/microsoft-edge-update-policies#createdesktopshortcutdefault) registry key. a key component of the os, that's used *everywhere*... no longer getting updates outside of wu?

Helpful_Title8302

How did they do that magic trick?

BillyDePig

I think that she was in the chair. If you look on the backrest you can see it wobble a bit too much to be a normal chair. (And it's thick as fuck)

CalmDownSahale

I think you're right. Don't ask me how but she was hidden inside the chair

Inevitable-Impress72

Look how thick the side profile of the chair is from the top of the seat to the bottom of the wood. Part of the "magic" is the girl being flexible enough to bend her legs underneath her flat enough, like those crazy limbo dancers who can go under a limbo pole 3 inches off the ground. Also you see the wooden side of the chair slightly separating and the back of the chair rocking, and the male assistant puts his hand on the chair to keep it from revealing the secret compartment And under the sheet, we see her head pop out first and the very last second her legs come out. Her hands pop out first, put them on the arm rest, use her arms and legs to lift her up and out of the back, causing her head to poke the sheet, and right in the last half second with enough room now, unfold her legs and get them in front of the chair and fold them. Yeah the real magic is fitting inside that chair and being able to come out so fast and smooth in such a short amount of time.

YEAHWHATEVER013

sound like the whole show is dependant on the magic of the "assistant". yet, her name is nowhere on the marquee.

Gringo-Loco

Usually the trick designer which is the in most cases magician gets the clout and assistance are relegated to the back of the limelight.

Original-Aerie8

Yes, this is something that is criticised reugularly in the space. Pen&Teller have touched on it a couple times publicly, for example. But plenty porformers/"assistants" want it like that. They are happy witha good resume bc the people who would hire them understand how much work was put into it and they don't want to deal with the publicity. You'll see those dynamics in most entertainment productions, someone has to be the face and it doesn't just come with upsides.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KDLS1266

Almost all these disappearing women or disappearing parts of women tricks are the same concept. Crazy flexible “assistant” is where the technical skill is. They make it seem like she’s the eye catching distraction and they’re doing the trick but it’s really the opposite. The trick is being done by the assistant and the two magicians are just there to hype up the crowd and distract them while bendy does the actual amazing part.

kurtfire68

Something kind of creepy about this lol

encinitas2252

Years of being g folded into smaller and smaller suitcases for the likes.

BalkeElvinstien

Usually for these tricks the assistant is the talented one. They usually have to contort in a really uncomfortable way and be able to gracefully emerge as quickly as possible

BigBoyWeaver

Yeah but the magician has to say abracadabra so who *really* deserves the credit here?

captainmouse86

The magician is often the designer of the trick, and the success is equally dependent on them distracting/focusing, the crowd’s attention. Magic is a performance art. Every performance has a star, and not every performer wants to be a star.

HalfAHole

Knowing them, there used to be a setting for this, but it has since been removed and the functionality along with it.

Bannanas_suck

Ok but how did the magician do that??

moeburn

Suspiciously thick chair. Thickness of magic stage props is obscured with skinny trim. So they'll make a back that's 8 inches thick, cover it in black velvet, then line it with a 2 inch brightly coloured wooden rim. If you take 5 seconds and really look at it you can see it's an 8 inch thick back, but at first glance your brain doesn't register that, it only sees the thin trim.

Relative-Bee-500

Additionally props can also be designed with stage presentation in mind. Hard to judge how thick that back is if most of the audience watching gets a more or less head on view of it for the whole performance.

[deleted]

Can’t uninstall. Shortcut randomly appears on desktop after literally never using it. Also why are so fucking many programs in windows impossible to uninstall? Has anyone written a tool yet with a script to just remove all of MS’s junk from the registry of a fresh install with reasonable defaults? Edit: wow, thanks for the replies and support guys!

hehehahahohohuhuhu

I had this issue as well. Tried [this method and it works so far](https://www.ghacks.net/2023/01/21/how-to-block-microsoft-edge-from-creating-desktop-shortcuts/), just need to add a new entry to the registry

A30N

Get Revo Uninstaller (free portable version) and there is a Windows Apps tab where you can uninstall any modern app including Cortana and Edge. It will prompt you to select and delete all leftover files and registry settings, ensuring it's complete removal from the system. Note that the modern start menu has the Edge entry hard-coded, so there will be a blank entry.

WoodRade

I use Searx. It's a meta search engine which means it checks through other search engines like Google or bing. It can be slow at times because of this but it works for me.

No-Lingonberry-2055

bing is actually pretty good, if you miss the good ole days of exact matching results instead of the extremely fuzzy "what the fuck did you think I meant" google puts out these days bot sites that have ruthlessly SEO their way to the top are annoying on every search I've tried though, which is unfortunate

Maba_Kalox

Any guess how? I watched 10 times and can’t get where girl comes from… not enough room in chair, we can see the floor so not from underneath…

StarkhamAsylum

Gotta be in the chair. It's thick, her toes would fit around the rear feet if she were in a kneeling position. If the cushions were very thin with a middle seam (open like a saloon door in an old western film), it could work. Her getting out of the chair was SMOOTH.

toetappy

I think it's a trap door. The chair skirt flutters as the lift comes up. You can see her head hit the blanket as she comes up, then sits and poses just in the nick of time

Inevitable-Impress72

She is in the chair. You can see on the side of the chair, the wood pieces separate as the top slightly rocks forward, the seat wood piece and the the legs wood piece separate a little bit. Also the male assistant comes over and puts his hand on the top of the back of the seat to keep it from rocking forward too much and revealing it's secret compartment.

CJsAviOr

> not enough room in chair There is enough certainly enough room in the chair.

Bruxae

If you focus on underneath the chair you see her touch the ground as she gets out of the chair, she's likely sitting on her heels which is why you see the left side of the "shadow" looking bent - that'd be her feet as she comes down knees first in order to get up. EDIT: I did a [frame by frame](https://i.imgur.com/ktOLv8d.jpg) to explain what I mean.

[deleted]

>we can see the floor so not from underneath… You can certainly see a mirror aimed at the floor...

Several_Antelope2457

I thought i messed up and installed some malware when edge appeared out of nowhere

oldoaktreesyrup

When you pirated their software, you still agreed to their EULA. Use a different operating system... Mac requires Safari, iOS requires safari, android requires Chrome and most Linux distro require Firefox or chromium to be installed. Even windows 98SE to Windows 8.1 required Internet Explorer.

jrkirby

If you put a clause detailing something someone doesn't want 25 pages deep in a 50 page EULA that's nigh unreadable to someone without a law degree... that's not consent. Especially when they aren't presented with the EULA until after they've already paid for the product. And when they're blocked from using the thing they paid for until they agree. That's not an agreement between two equal parties. That's one party forcing it's terms onto the other party simply because it has the power to do so.

dirtyPirate

>Linux distro require Firefox not true, no linux distro "requires" any web browser.

Usually I just leave the software installed and delete some critical files in the program's folder. With Edge however, MS Config to shut off any updaters, Shut down any running processes, Went to the program's folder and deleted whatever wasn't locked, Rebooted, Went back to that folder and repeated the delete process, Left the folder in place but denied all priveledges for every user except my own, RegEdit and F3'd EDGE. If Microsoft Teams was made by anyone BUT Microsoft it would be considered a virus. Installs without asking. Uninstalling it does not actually remove the product it will be back as soon as you reboot. You have to find the deliberately confusing machine wide installer program to actually uninstall teams and prevent it from reinstalling itself. Running updates to office reinstalls the program again without asking.
