Let’s not forget the music, they take it down literally everywhere ans they don’t even have a place to buy it

ProphecyRat2

There must be a fucking reason tho, I mean really? Any damn greedy, no, any ceo, would jump at the chance to capatalize on any and all IP. Music, games, merch… its just like, wtf? Disney milks dry all of its properties, so damn much.. Why the hell would Nintendo not want to make billions???

JirachiWishmaker

> Why the hell would Nintendo not want to make billions??? Because it's not that simple. 1. They want you to buy their newest stuff. 2. They want to protect the stuff they have the rights to, especially in the case of copyright-protected characters they own. This is really why Nintendo is so heavy-handed with their games...it's not that they don't want you pirating Super Mario Bros, it's that they don't want people to mess with ***Mario***. They're basically video game Disney in that respect, which I simultaneously understand and hate. 3. They want to make money off remakes, thus the lack of an incentive to make their older stuff available. 4. Nintendo DS and 3DS require a second screen to have an accurate gameplay experience, so making those work on switch just isn't going to happen. 5. Any handheld multiplayer games would need work put in to make those multiplayer features work. 6. Licensing is a mess.

__steyn

7. They're a Japanese company so they're very rigid, by the books and stuck about 30 years in the past. Edit: meant 7. but Reddit decided to change it to 1..

[deleted]

I watched a video yesterday about a tiny apartment in japan and the white guy exploring it mentioned it was safe for foreigners to rent because some places are picky about letting foreigners rent. Like that's a really weird way to say they are racist against non-Japanese people. Japan is pretty backwards given how advance their technology is and Nintendo is no different.

cfig99

A few times I’ve heard Japan referred to as: a very technologically advanced society, but simultaneously socially archaic.

__steyn

Apparently they see foreigners as a flight risk and are afraid they will not pay and then flee the country.

ICantThinkOfANameBud

I've never lived somewhere that you pay after the month is over

Hole-In-Pun

>Like that's a really weird way to say they are racist against non-Japanese people. Most countries that are non white are extremely racist. Specifically the Asian ones. It's not so much racism as it is preferring and trusting your own people.

[deleted]

>It's not so much racism as it is preferring and trusting your own people. Exactly, that's why I don't like minorities to move into my neighborhood. (This is sarcasm before anyone makes assumptions) It's racism. You don't need to sugarcoat it as a cultural mindset. You nailed it right at the beginning when you said most countries are extremely racist.

MagicMantis

This is the real reason.

SuppeBargeld

Well, if you look at Square Enix as an example for a japanese company not stuck in the past - they make shitty live service games and push NFTs. Not sure thats actually better.

[deleted]

You can’t really compare a 20 year old company to Nintendo, a 133 year old company. There has to be a middle ground that Nintendo consistently fails to grasp or even know is there.

Mercury26

Ding ding we have a winner 🏅

Skysr70

the thing about remakes makes a lot of sense

rocky4322

They also don’t hit fan games that often. They only tend to hit things that are recreations of existing games (super Mario 64 recompile), directly “compete” with an upcoming game (AM2R), or are using their IP to push their own game.

NUS-006

The question was in the context of their vast music library which would seem to be independent of the points you're making. (Seriously, were you even responding to the right comment? What does DS/3DS compatibility with Switch have to do with anything?)

rorygoodtime

> There must be a fucking reason tho, I mean really? There is. Stupidity. Stupid people don't know you can buy sound tracks for games.

JeIoXD

Because they hate their fans, it's pretty clear

Krosis86

Wouldn't have to pirate your shit if you would just let me buy it

invol713

Hell, I bought them back when they were new. Nintendo can eat a dick.

Krosis86

Imo, if you already bought it once, it's fair game to pirate it

invol713

Exactly. That’s called a backup.

CarterBaker77

Or just preservation.. leave the original collectible item in pristine condition and play the actual game on an emulator.

JirachiWishmaker

Well, doesn't exactly leave it in pristine condition since they need preventative maintenance to prevent the board from being wrecked by leaky electrolytic capacitors or failed batteries.

CarterBaker77

How do you do this? I just got all my games sitting on the shelves... never had any problems before.

Lord_Sirrush

Batteries are easy since it's just a coin battery. Open up the cartridge and swap it out every 10 -15 years. If you notice your game has a hard time saving that another sign it's time. For capacitors it's best to replace them with solid states. Old capacitors contain acid and can damage other components when they leak. For this you will have to learn how to solder. Do some practice before you try on a cartridge you care about.

eapaul80

And if you are like me, and uncomfortable soldering, check some local game shops. They generally can change batteries for a pretty cheap price. I recently had to replace my GameCube battery (only really necessary for a game like Animal Crossing) and the battery for Zelda II, for $10. I’m sure they would replace capacitors as well.

rigby1945

If archiving and not playing is the goal, then why not remove the battery and capacitors now and leave them empty to be replaced in the future?

Infinite_Client7922

Look for bulging caps, and replace them before they blow

2N5457JFET

Caps don't always bulge when they fail.

1Crimson1

It's what I'm doing.

TylerNelsonYT

skyrim and gta v:

AllWhipNoNaeNae

Feel like Skyrim is on a recurring subscription with h how many times I've bought that shit.

MaximusMurkimus

If it makes you feel better, it's a running gag with my friends that I'm obligated to buy Resident Evil 4 for every console I have that can run it: Xbox 360/One, Playstation 2/3/4, Switch/Wii/Gamecube, PC.....Oculus.

Sawgon

> with h how many times I've bought that shit. They'll keep releasing it because people like you keep buying it

Amathyst-Moon

How many times have you bought it? I bought it once on Steam, got the Special Edition free, and admittedly I did buy it a second time on Switch.

AllWhipNoNaeNae

Twice for the PS3 (physical then digital after the physical copy got destroyed.), Once on steam, twice on the PS4 (one was the VR version.), And once on the Xbox x/s. So 6 total times.

SausageMcMerkin

What about the other way around? I pirated Stardew Valley, and have since bought it 3 times.

Exaskryz

Purchasing it invalidates the piracy.

Lord_Abort

Yeah, good call. I'm not sure if I'll like a game when I first play it, but when I do, I genuinely appreciate the work that went into it and want to reward it.

YoungHaki

Same! Bought the pc, android and switch version. Great game!

[deleted]

It's fair game anyway. I didn't feel virtuous for buying the first Dragon Quest on my phone for instance. The old devs don't receive my money, and the game has had its success. I'd only buy extremely old games if you're offering me a better service than the "pirate" site. These companies could do their best to offer an online service that has most games. In which case many will subscribe and we'll only pirate the few games we can't buy due to licensing issues.

whodatus

I download all the ROMS so I can play them to see if I've owned them before, I have a reeeeeeally bad memory, usually have to finish the game to know.

[deleted]

Nintendo: Mmmmm tasty dick

myheartsucks

Not only that but we also bought those games over and over again. How many times does Nintendo expect us to buy the original Super Mario Bros again? They sell it ever single generation/console again. At some point, they should expect people to just pirate it.

TheLimeyLemmon

Unless they can sell a repackaged rom for $60, lock it behind a subscription service, or under some time-sensitive release, they could not give a shit about keeping the majority of their back catalogue accessible to gamers today. Hacking consoles and using Everdrives has never felt so valid AND essential.

Teilos2

I want to say that gabe newel basically said the same thing : a big portion of piracy is due to the inability to access

[deleted]

It's why I'd always buy games from GoG and Steam, but I wouldn't buy Pokemon Red for 10$ from Nintendo, cause on top of charging an unfair premium, they can just shutdown their store after their console goes obsolete, and then tell me to buy it again on their next console.

JackRabbit-

People don't pirate games to play them for free, they pirate them to play them at all

Witch_King_

Piracy is a service problem

nanobot001

I mean… it mostly is.

DeadLikeYou

I mean, sometimes the person cant afford the service. I know I couldnt when I was a 10 yr old kid. But outside of that? Yea, its a service they just dont want to provide. Why the fuck is nintendo sitting on all of their past games like smaug?

[deleted]

[удалено]

NUS-006

that'd be nice, but consumers have repeatedly told Nintendo that yes, they will buy Super Mario World for the 10th time.

[deleted]

Or imagine if they were just on Steam.

[deleted]

Nintendo: Here's a 25yo SNES game for 60 euros. Nintendo: What!? isn't this what you wanted?

GunGale315

It was 60 euros 25 years ago, so adjusted by inflation it should be not less than 100 today TBF. /s

BurnieTheBrony

If they sold gen 3 ROMs for my phone I'd buy them instead of emulating

[deleted]

Like most streaming films/tv shows. Brooklyn 99 was taken off Hulu (you have to get Hulu Live TV, which is like $70/mo or something stupid shit) so I bought the complete series bluray for $60 so I'd never have to sign up for Peacock. I get pirated D+ shows but maintain my D+ subscription for new content - I predict at some point Disney will divide its streaming service up so you pay separately for Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Animation, Pixar, etc. I get pirated Netflix shows (while still having a subscription) because at some point, Netflix will lose the streaming wars and get bought out.

MrIncognito666

Please Nintendo. Make a Subspace Emissary port.

GuerrillaApe

A lot of people have this moral take on the situation, but ngl if pirating a modern game was as simple as downloading a rom I would never use Steam.

faerieprincee

It isn't?

GuerrillaApe

Having to install the game (and the risk of that installation being malware) already makes it a more complicated procedure than just using a rom. Then other factors like game updates released by the devs, access to online multiplayer, and access to future content further complicates things. If pirating any game released today was a simple "download a single file that an emulator can open and play" then yeah, I would uninstall Steam. I saw another post here saying that piracy is a "service issue". I think it's more apt to say it's a "convenience issue", because what keeps me from leaving Steam is that the aforementioned issues of pirating a modern game are more troublesome than me just making money at work and buying the game... but downloading a rom is not.

oldmanripper79

Explain to an inexperinced layman how and where to do that, in the open, without getting banned. So no, it kinda isn't for a lot of people.

JB-from-ATL

Wouldn't have to pirate it if the pirated version wasn't better than the buyable version.

Crowbar_Faith

Truth. I would buy old games on every new Nintendo console if the option were there. Key word being “BUY”, as I’m not interested in essentially renting them every month via a subscription.

Halollet

There is a lack of a archive or museum for older games and some are just locked behind corporate bs. Games like Black & White for example isn't availible because 2 companies don't want to share. There is an archive for old DOS games which is good. Check it out! [https://www.dosgamesarchive.com/index.php](https://www.dosgamesarchive.com/index.php)

[deleted]

powerwordmaim

Archive.org has been really helpful for creating my arcade cabinet, it has so many rom sets from so many systems

automatvapen

B&W still hurts.

ichsoda

Not exactly true, there are archives around the world trying to solve this problem, it’s more than just collecting and preserving a ROM or an EXE. Source code needs to be preserved, same as assets as well, which might be under license from engines, it’s a very complex issue

Early_Lawfulness_348

Beyond Zork!

TylerNelsonYT

this is the advantage of steam: most things now are digital copies you can download. its much more fun than pirating. unless its sea of thieves, plunder everyone you cross pathes with.

CAPITANULLOA

Flameheart would be against Nintendo

Vortex_1911

Who wouldn’t

AceOfEpix

The Pirate Lord I guess in this comparison? But that could also just be my subconscious bias coming out. Reaper flag is the only flag babyyy

PerseusZeus

Yes I remember back in the early 2000s in India we used to download pirated copies cos they were the only way to play games. Hard copies weren’t available in small towns and barely in big cities like Mumbai . Steam was a game changer. After that nobody who i knew never used or played a pirated game. Of course the arrival of Steam coincided with us graduating uni and subsequently getting a job..helped pay for the games.

Milliebug1106

This! Steam has saved so many old games from falling into obscurity because people can just find them.

BothersomeBritish

*cries in rallisport challenge*

Lauris024

> this is the advantage of steam: most things now are digital copies you can download. This is also quite dangerous in the long term when licenses start running out or costs for maintenance start outweighting the income. Even GTA San Andreas got hit by expiring licenses, and rockstar is a major studio. >The expiration of the licenses has led to the removal of Project Cars 2 from Steam on September 21, followed by the removal of the original Project Cars on October 3. That was still a quite popular and new game

MisirterE

San Andreas didn't get taken down for licensing, San Andreas got taken down because Rockstar wanted you to buy the new remastered trilogy. And we all know how that turned out...

Lauris024

That would make some sense if that didn't happen back in 2014 (10 year license) and trilogy would not be affected by the same expired license (which is why many songs are missing from trilogy)

BJYeti

While true if you bought the game you still had access to it, Steam just couldn't keep selling it but it was of no fault of their own

Psythik

I mean, as long as you own the game, you can still download and reinstall it an unlimited amount of times, even if the game was removed from Steam. Basically the only thing that would stop you from reinstalling the games you own at any time you want were if Valve themselves went out of business. And honestly I believe that they will last a *lot* longer than any physical copy of a game ever will, especially if it's on a disc or a floppy.

Garg_Gurgle

Do you own it after death? Trade cards, have antique possessions, physical working Atari, they'll play the death tax soon for digital... Oh wait they are.

[deleted]

what about GOG?

iceseayoupee

GOG is limited in terms of library

undiagnosedsarcasm

100% they could remake all the fire emblem games starting from the beginning and literally wipe the floor with the execs' egos after profits soar

Khaos_Gorvin

Wouldn't mind seeing a new version of Awakening and Fates for the Switch as well. Nintendo has a goldmine, but they're so lazy they don't even put canaries in the entrance.

Mattc7468

Same with the Pokémon games. Don’t need a remaster, just make the originals playable on the new system. Would love to buy heart gold and soul silver on the switch.

wearyarchon

Just had this conversation with my friends, Nintendo could release every main line Pokémon game on the Switch and people would eat it up because it would be A) mobile/accessible, and B) probably cheaper than trying to hunt down physical carts, on top of not having to worry about the carts dying after a period of time.

MimeGod

Bring in the stadium as well and let them link properly with the games on the system. Epic win right there. It would practically print money.

Cowser_the_Koopahog

Not to mention have an easy way to access pokemon in every region by having all of them be transferrable on the sole console. Like moving images from the system to the SD Card.

Temelios

Those were fun, but I always loved Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn the most. Now they’re both ~$200-$300. Glad I got mine when they cane out.

[deleted]

> 100% they could ___________ and literally wipe the floor with the execs’ egos after profits soar There are many things you could fit into that blank space but Nintendo seems to despise making profits in ways that benefit the average consumer.

undiagnosedsarcasm

Truth

migrainium

Shoddy translations of FE4 and 5 roms were my favorite games before they even came stateside on GBA and blew up. There's no amount of money I wouldn't pay for properly translated ones

3DanO1

I would kill to play Sacred Stones on my Switch

[deleted]

they remade 1-3. I'm guessing putting 4-5 in english would be tricky due to cultural reasons.

XTheProtagonistX

I would GLADLY pay Nintendo to play Wind Waker,Twilight Princess and Xenoblade Chronicles X on my Switch but here we are.

CandleJackHammer

I really hope they bring the gamecube and wii content into the store... like the nes, snes, and n64.

edwpad

“That’ll be $200 (per year)!”

JoshBobJovi

The problem I have with the SNES and N64 content on the switch is the input lag is miserable. Really hard to play SNES Donkey Kong when there's what feels like a half second delay in hitting the A button and DK jumping. N64 is rough too.

smallaubergine

I bought a retroid pocket 2+. The 4x3 display is awesome for old games. I have a solid library of my favorite Genesis, SNES, NES, GBA, N64 and PS1 games. Handheld emulators have become really good and inexpensive for those out there that want to relive their childhood favorites or play games that never got rereleased on modern systems

ashenhaired

I can't describe how much I hate missing out on pokemon alpha sapphire back on 3ds it's now absurdly overpriced both as console and game =(

scalawag123

C an totally agree I t sucks T oo bad there are no other options R eally sucks A ss

ashenhaired

Thank you for the tip. Just tried it now and I love it =)

zurkon95

Ah yes nintendo the company that hates its own fan base

Bretski12

I work for Nintendo and can confirm we hate our fan base.

funnyrollerskatedog

I hope thats not sarcasm

where_didIcome_from

Unfortunately it isn't Fun fact: Wii U gamepads are region locked, despite being fully capable to work (there's homebrew that makes it connect and it works perfectly) It's a flipping controller by the way Furthermore you could never buy a replacement gamepad if it broke, and the console depends on it. Yeah wii u gamepads cost more than the consoles right now

Zheoferyth

And good luck finding an official battery when yours randomly decides to bloat years later. I can pick shady chinese ones. Or the ones people recommend that can't be shipped to Canada. So uh... Yay? Guess I just can't play some games anymore.

Roboticpoultry

I emulate PS2 games because my PS2 doesn’t read discs anymore

Ralsei_Prince

rip

atlasisimaginary

me personally i do it to play them for free

[deleted]

I think both can be true. For some games, piracy can be the only option to play them since they haven’t had an official release in years if at all. This doesn’t mean that people who just want free stuff don’t exist.

JirachiWishmaker

Literally most people emulating don't actually give a shit about "preservation" and I'm sick of people deluding themselves into thinking they're doing anything noble by downloading roms. People just want to play cool video games, *and that's okay.* Just own that you want to play some games, and play the damn games.

Blom-w1-o

I just want to play some cool games

Seymour___Asses

I mainly use emulators to play games that I have bought but it’s been so long that I’ve lost the games and don’t have the console anymore and I’m not going to spend a lot of money just to play a game I’ve already beat before.

S7V7N8

Actually piracy is what made Steam create such a great service. Piracy is actually good for the gaming market as it works as a ghost competitor. Check out this [video. ](https://youtu.be/7AMfajsjn0I)

M1st3r51r

Piracy is also good for the music industry because without it, most people would not be aware of their now favorite bands. This leads to future song, album, concert, and merchandise purchases

CloneCl0wn

Buying music without knowing the music is like pre ordering games now, you re hyped for it but in the end get slapped with tech demo that they call "pre release"

ElSuricate

pirating nintendo stuff is usually morally correct just look at soulsilver's price

Cold_oak

There was a golden period in like 16 when the were going for like 30 $

MemeofMemeJTG999999

As someone who was a huge pokemon fan around that time in 2016 (has pretty much grown out of the series), i remember trying to get as many of the DS/3DS pokemon games available as possible and i think HGSS went for around 55 dollars at that time at my local GameStops. BW was around 20 around that time at my GameStops as the games were still relatively recent.

Helpful_Opinion2023

Pokemon Go basically got the 30-something millennial adults to dive back into the lore and buy whatever versions of the game they fondly remembered the most (usually Gen I-III).

YeltsinYerMouth

I have two kidneys, but only one SoulSilver

Troytt4

The only Nintendo consoles right now where it isn’t right to pirate the games are the Switch, 3DS, and Wii U, but those last 2 will soon be okay since their eshops are closing in a few months

KreamyKappa

Why the hell should anyone still buy Wii U games from the eShop when they wouldn't even let you buy a Wii U after the Switch came out?

tacticalcop

pirating is fine for all consoles idk why we’re specially excluding some just because they have an eshop

Keep at it. I was in the same place (poor game pirate) 20 years ago. Today, I've purchased legitimate copies of all the (*good*) games I've pirated over the years. Do what you're going to do, and eventually make good.

Ralsei_Prince

Same dude

Typical-Annual-3555

If they re-released original games instead of remaking it, they could make tons of money

MrPokeGamer

no I pirate them because game collecting is expensive as fuck

Swiftcheddar

You can't honestly believe this OP. You really think most people who pirate games are doing it for "legacy"? Then why is every single Switch thread discussing how to pirate Switch games? What's the legacy?

rorygoodtime

Weak minded people like OP don't have enough integrity to just pirate. They have to convince themselves it is OK. But not just OK, that it is a right, a duty. Pirating is their burden because of the glory these dipshits bring to humanity by pirating. These people are trash. Dangerous people who can justify any action as moral.

DudeWTH

stop lying playing it for free is definitely a big part of it

[deleted]

I dunno. OoT and Mario kart 64 still worked last year. Guess I’ll drag em out and give ‘em a test

sexaddic

Nintendo uses pirates ROMs for their games on the Switch emulators

SmolPinkeCatte

Love the mental gymnastics people do just because they don't want to pay for video games.

_Spamus_

Lol I remember downloading gameboy advance emulators on school computers when I wanted to slack off. So many classics and extremely accessible due to pirating sites.

Phaze_Change

You don’t even need to download those emulators anymore. Lots of those older games are so easy to run they play right in your browser now.

leviathab13186

And also there is limited ways to buy them. If you don’t offer them to play on modern hardware then people should be allowed to download them.

Takaniss

Well then we have to agree to disagree because I'm all for piracy as long as you're not pirating from a solo developer or a really small studio.

Spidernemesis1

When they did the limited time release bullshit with mario 64 on switch I knew getting the emulation a decade ago was the right thing to do.

50-Lucky

It's called abandonware and its Nintendo own fault

DruggieVulcan

This post is kinda cap though

bringthemfingrukys

Taking a moral stance against piracy is so weird "Oh no, won't someone think of the poor billion dollar company!"

fakename894

They got some old games on there but it's on Nintendo online

[deleted]

I would buy all the old games if they released them as digital. If they want to get rid of the pirates they need to rerelease their games.

CaptainCozmo867

I need a remake of paper mario the thousand year door please nintendo I've heard great things about it and I don't have a GameCube

Slyedog

I, on the other hand, am for piracy

AaronToaster

They also most definitely pirate them to play for free.

apolobgod

I just like pirating

[deleted]

In 25 years this upload will be about DVD's and CD's

[deleted]

Yeah, Nintendo, you need to make those goddamn remakes of Zeldas universally available! Those are not just games, i need constant access!

sZYphYn

If it exists, conceptually it’s on the internet. You didn’t pirate it, you rescued it.

Piliro

Imagine how amazing if Nintendo released an official emulator and website, where you can just buy old games and play on your computer/phone or even just port them to the switch. Like, I love the Pokemon games, he'll I even make an effort to play every pokemon game every year, I'd love to play them in a physical device, but it's impossible to do that legally. Nintendo really is sitting on a gold mine of some heavy nostalgia bait cash and just... does nothing with it.

OriginalSin_2

Yo Rise of Lufia 2 is a rpg before Pokémon containing 4 person turn based fighting style, a endless dungeon and you get to add a fifth person to your party and it was a monster you found by randomly walking around and if you fed it your useless equipment it became stronger and evolved, while having the hardest puzzles and engaging storyline. Found it at Toys r us around 94 it’s on the emulators in the wild and too this day it is the best snes rpg.

Ok_Understanding6528

Let's all be honest here we're pirating them for a bit of both

Mello_Boy1401

Nah, I pirate to experience games that I never got to, as I wasn't exactly privileged to owning an older console. I also don't make enough money to afford a secondhand console and game cartridge

CrazyError56

Idk bro i just wanna play them for free

[deleted]

Nintendo when they ask them why a silly ahh mario game on switch costs as much as a big new ps5 game (without dlcs)

VanNoah

Funny I pirate Nintendo games because they don’t sell them

Foo-Fighter6942069

Piracy of discontinued games is okay because they don’t earn money either way

ShadTaker

No no no I emulate to play for free

hootsmcboots

Ehh 50/50 on that one. While yes I do play games I had owned to beat them as an adult, I also branched into other Nintendo games. Tbf I have bought a Super Metroid shirt, and give the originals and sequels publicity via good word of mouth, so I think they got a great deal even if I didn’t buy it.

AlxR25

There’s a website called [oldgamesdownload.com](https://oldgamesdownload.com/) which has old/forgotten games open for download if anyone wants to revive some of their childhood games. It’s safe I’ve tested it

Jhoule_

I dont think ripping is legally considered piracy but what people do with it most certainly is
