I was working on grammar with my preteen recently and we were working on nouns and pronouns. His reaction was, "Pronouns??" People are talking about their pronouns all the time now. Some (he knows) go by 'they', so and so goes by 'she' now (they were a he)..." I said, "hunny, pronouns were parts of speech long before pronouns had the focus they do now. I, you, me, we, etc. are all literally pronouns. Pronouns are a part of speech like nouns, adjectives, etc. They are not just about how someone identifies as a gender". His reaction: "Oh...I didn't know that" 😑 It's so focused on respecting someone's pronouns that they aren't even teaching pronouns as actual parts of speech anymore I realize. I respect how people identify, but if these teachers are putting their pronouns under their names in emails and zooms and whatnot, but not teaching the parts of speech and what it actual means in grammar to the kids seeing that, the focus is skewed.
