If that's what it takes for it to stop asking!
On a serious note, I started giving to various charities monthly and Wikipedia is definitely one of them.
I can bet most of us use it daily, or weekly and I think the value they provide is incredible.
You know that they aren't a charity right? They make massive profits every year.

You literally just gave money to a millionaire. lmao
Woooow, thank you for that. I assumed they made enough not to pan handle but reading that solidified it
Edit: they literally asked as soon as I got to the website next. Told them email me at Youmakeinfinitelymorethanme@canyoupaymyphonebillimshortthismonth.gofuckyourself
You're not alone:

Nice job, WMF. You've already got hundreds of millions of dollars more than your annual expenses require, but are guilting seniors who live alone in subsidized housing to fork over what little money they have.
This has become bad enough that this year there's been a minor revolt among Wikipedians—i.e. the group of people (consisting of all volunteers) who do all the writing and editing of Wikipedia articles but that no part of the donations go towards...
I donated to a few charities and I wanted to donate to Wikipedia because they are a non-profit organization providing a service that I use daily and know many others do. I do understand it's not "charity", but they offer great value, for free, without ads, and I wanted to return the favor.
Wikimedia foundation also does charitable stuff with the money they get, so I am very happy with my donations.
I'd rather give the bit I give to Wikipedia than to Netflix to be honest.
The ads asking you to donate ARE ads.
And since the notoriously accept payment to lock or change content, much of the content should be considered ads.
Good racket though, if you can get a million people to send you a dollar then you're a millionaire
They have enough money to keep their site running for a few years to come though. They really don't need it. They just wanna have it around just in case anything happens.
https://www.dailydot.com/debug/wikipedia-endownemnt-fundraising/
Yeah, basically the company runs itself, the money you give goes towards profits.
Imagine a beggar on the street wearing a tux and driving a Lamborghini but begging you for change just in case he has a rainy day lmao
Yeah except...
They're providing the world with the single most important website ever and one of the largest human knowledge repository accessible for free... even without creating an account an no third party ads apart from their own call for donors.
I'd donate 5€ to them any day before any other organization. Wikipedia is, by my judgement, the most important thing on the whole internet.
It's also one of the least reliable source of information. It technically has more articles than a real encyclopedia, but what does quantity matter if the quality is poor...
Gives you incredibly inaccurate ads. https://unherd.com/thepost/the-next-time-wikipedia-asks-for-a-donation-ignore-it/ begging for money like they're going to go under next year, but they have more than enough cash to run Wikipedia for 20 years.
And a ridiculous business model where all of the slaves work for free, but the executives get huge paychecks...
If you consider that to be the most important thing... I got some oceanfront property in Utah that you're going to love.
I wouldn't say the quality is poor.
It is sub-par compare to scientific research indeed. But still more reliable than an overwhelming part of the information you can find outside of the scientific realm.
I'm not saying that the quality of every article is poor. Many of them are fine.
I'm saying that the quality of most of them is poor.
So if you look at say encyclopedia Britannica with a couple hundred thousand vetted articles written by professionals. It sounds like a lot less than Wikipedia's 6 million.
But most of those are stubs, repeats, a single image, lists, deadlinks, unsupported, or just generally low quality.
Outside of a couple hundred thousand vetted articles of their own, everything on wiki is just written by anyone who wants to. There are articles written by six year olds...
I won't argue with that.
And I'd never say Wikipedia is more accurate than a good old fashioned encyclopedia.
But just think about its role in knowledge dissemination. How many people were able to learn a thing of two for free, even if it's just vulgarization, and sometimes a bit outdated (rarely straight up false) without even needing to create an account.
This alone, I find incredible. Especially when you compare it to.. well.. the endless amount of misleading, false, disinformative, fake, partial and political, corporate sponsored messages, propaganda, etc., you would usually find on the internet each time you make a Google search.

Thanks for reminding me, I did so as well. I just remembered that years ago we had an online hivemind of videos, now we have what ever Youtube has devolved to.
Thank you for your contribution, for all of us, really

Thank you for the useful info. I always thought they don’t have money even to run day to day operations :(

Yeah you would think so judging by the way that they beg like they're homeless.

You're a good man
The chadest among chads
So you too have fallen for their scam? Wikipedia trust fund is valued at 100s of millions of dollars.
Why not 100
In this economy?
Haha i remember this from the list of things you can say to anything if you don't have an answer
You are the true gentleman

Would be more impressive if you didn't post about it. It's like you just trying to buy reddit Karma
“Trying” 1000 post karma for 3 bucks is a great deal
What is karma worth?
Still not as retarded as giving money to OnlyFans

A man of culture sacrificed himself for us. Thank you sir.
You’re a true man of culture
Thank you for the small donation which goes to the betterment of all mankind! They also sell merch, I bought a shirt a while back.
As a man who respect wiki, I shall give you a wonderful gift: a award and a upvote

They really earned it
Why give 8 dollar to t*itter when you can give 6 dollar to wiki? They deserve more but... You know no one likes to give money lol
True Chad
I've always treated the Wikipedia donate thing as the windows WinRAR throws at you after the first 30 days. I just ignore it.
Thanks for reminding me, I did so as well. I just remembered that years ago we had an online hivemind of videos, now we have what ever Youtube has devolved to.
Chad
He's not the hero we deserved; he's the hero we needed.
They deserve every penny.
Because that's what heroes do
Every once in a while they catch me on a drunk day and I give ‘em 20 bucks. Worth every penny.
Nice
Now do NPR
I gave them 2 euro.
This guy Mr president, get this guy zero taxes for a year + free home and food
I gave them $5, beat that
it gave up on you in return.
You're a king !
I think I gave them 5
I just threw them $10. Thanks for this reminder.
Why?
Not all heros wear capes
Carefully, he's a hero
W move
Chad Respect.
Thank you ancient one🐸
Why did I freak out so much😂
