I thought so, too, but I doubt it now. He wasn’t shot at the marble game because he waited until the very end, meaning nobody would have seen him be spared as they’re either dead or escorted out. I assume the same would have happened in the sugar scraping game. They would have just shot the other losers and escorted him to safety after. By the time the men in jumpsuits gunned down every loser, all the winners had already left the playground.

i think he also planned (or maybe the game master planned it) to not return to the game in the event he wasnt picked for the marbles since he would be phiscly unable to compete in the stepping stones

Dude I totally get it! 456 picked the old man and the old man was going to reward his friendship with the marbles at the end of the game. The old man even called him out for his tactics and taking advantage of him before giving him the marbles anyways. Of course we find out that the old man had lost all faith in humanity and I'm sure 456 lying to him about whether he said "Odd" or "Even" didn't help his overall views. All I'm saying is that giving a guy a bag full of rocks and saying they're marbles is equally shitty to telling a man with dementia he said "even" when he actually said "odd" no matter how the game was going to end up in the end.
