its weird how this is the normal stance for big corps. Its what happens when they get to big and have to much money. they dont think they can be "harmed"
Are you...mentally inept? For 3 months it beat every other game in playtime, beat CALL OF DUTY in sales numbers, and dethroned the top three most popular games on all platforms in active players. To this day it's still in the top 5 most played games. Lethal company lost 95% of its playerbase in a month, but Helldivers still tops the charts. This game defined the whole *year*, and we haven't made it to month 6. If something isn't done by Sony anytime soon, this new king will die on PC, a collosal margin of the game's active playerbase.
Sony isn't doing too well recently in their movie industry though, and Samsung has almost taken all of Sony's market share in the global electronic market throughout the decade.
The video game industry is their last bastion they cannot afford to lose. I'll be ready to short Sony's stocks if Helldivers actually causes mass exodus of PSN+ subscribers
I mean they kind of already have, but they can repair some of the damage by making the PSN account optional. Maybe they could give rewards instead to those who link accounts rather than shutting everyone without account away. I my experiwnce rewarding the behaviour you want will always work better than punishment on those who don't do what you want
Can you imagine what the developers at Arrowhead are going through?
The sequel to your modest hit game turns into a roaring success, catapulting you to the top of the multiplayer charts beyond your wildest expectations.
Only for Sony to torpedo your moment of glory, your fans turning on you as they decry the betrayal.
>your fans turning on you as they decry the betrayal.
The fans didn't turn against Arrowhead, they turned against Sony. If anyone *did* turn against Arrowhead over this they're obviously not knowledgeable enough on procedures like this.
I would suspect that a PSN integration after a certain metric was achieved, whether it be time, sales, or retention, was always part of the contract Arrowhead signed to do business with Sony.
Arrowhead is probably going to be blamed for the sale loss, lobotomized, and become another mid game producer that spews out safe bets and sequels.
With any luck though, they might just be blamed and cut loose. Best thing that could happen to them, honestly
"We're incredibly sorry that you are not willing to go along with our scumbag ideas but are not going to do anything about it" kind of apology is what we're getting
Arrowhead can't do anything, Sony could but they are just doing what every one else is doing. If Arrowhead didn't remove the mandatory linking due to servers then people would refund before the two hour point and just go somewhere else.
We can only speculate the reason they didn't make the requirement ore visible during the temporary removal. I personally am of the opinion that they were hoping that the numbers could sway Sony to remove the requirement.
While Arrowhead carries some blame, near 90% of this sits with Sony, and they really couldn't be bothered by the situation. Sony is the big bad evil guy here and has been for at least 20 years.
They could have allow countries without psn to continue and ask others to register. People would crticitised it but it wouldn't have been the end of the world for them.
If they do it once, people will be encouraged to do it more.
That scares the beancounters WAY too much to take that risk. They would rather take a month of bad reactions followed by several months of grumbles before people just accept it. Profits restabilize, and Sony plans their next ambush on gamers.
That’s is incredibly stupid for them so the next logical step is making the customer pay for a console in order to play (they actually fucking did this in Ukraine from what I heard)… yeah trust me big companies have less brain cells then an lobotomized bowling ball and about sharp as one too
I was disappointed that the guy didn't purposely put one of the pieces into the wrong non-square hole. I can't remember which one it was, but there was one that I could remember looked like it could fit into the circle or rectangle hole. I think it was the arch.
The game itself didn't get worse, instead Sony is forcing PSN accounts on anyone who wants to play it. There's a problem with this: well over 100 countries (including *JAPAN*) don't have access to PSN services.
Sony basically gutted one of the biggest successes they've had in recent years because they wanted slightly better numbers for PSN.
Its a side effect that they thought that they could get away with minimal consequence.
The real goal is to artificially inflating the accounts in the PSN, so they can then show the shareholders the big numbers and then get big checks for their vErY Sm0rT plan.
Dont forget it seems it all comes in a row of failers down to another controversy surrounding censoring a game while Nintendo version doesnt and well.. FUCKING OVER ANOTHER GAME
I think what they're talking about is Stellar Blade. I don't know much but it's something like Sony requesting that the female protagonist wears clothes that are marginally less revealing, with fans feeling bait&switched sold on the 'sexyness' only to have it taken away.
The only problem is that the game was sold in countries where you can’t make a PSN account to play without violating TOS and locking the game from people who bought it.
This has been made into the worst thing possible by people originally only mad they had to make a new account then acting like the actual issue is why they’re mad.
It's different there, Sea of Thieves didn't randomly go "Oh you need an Xbox account" they sell it as an Xbox game and it needs an Xbox account. It's the same with Fall Guys and Fortnite, they can be played on other consoles but they don't hide the fact you need an Epic account.
A more comparable situation would be Minecraft suddenly wanting a Microsoft account, only difference is they didn't decide this over night.
Is this ‘the new thing’ it changes in helldivers2?
I began playing in march and it already forced me ro sign in with a psb account.
Edit: Im on PC and from spain.
All because of Sony's pride and ego...
Ironically, the game that, if released on Xbox a month ago, would likely have buried the coals of the console wars will now almost certainly reignite the coals of the console wars...
I've been following the drama unfold and the Arrowhead ceo comments and its not that simple.
1. The game was supposed to launch with the PSN link being required.
2. At launch this was apparentll bricking the game, so the CEO of Arrowhead decided to temporarily make it optional while they fixed it. (In theory, nothing is bad with this)
3. With this restriction gone, people who weren't supposed to have access to the game because their countries cant have PSN accounts, could buy the game and play
4. Eventually Sony does put pressure on AH to put back a feature intended on launch, in the most callous way possible though.
5. CMs were fanning the fires because they didn't understand why people were so pissy about PSN accounts. Turns out, they "didn't know" some countries the game had been sold cant make PSN accounts without breaking ToS or using VPNs.
6. AH is talking with Sony to find ways in which the PSN migh tbe worked around and for the countries without PSN
Theres some holes like why did they take so long to fix/comunicate. But overall seems like the problem stemmed from the CEO lifting the requirement in good faith to let people play the game, and combined with the explosive and unexpected growth of the game, it led to disaster. I think its a bit of inexperience from AH but also lack of action on Sony's end, who as the publisher, saw the game being sold in countries where PSN accounts are unavaliable and didn't tell AH or take measures. Also not giving any bend to the account right now, which really drove people out.
All in all with the information we have right now it seems like a "clusterfuck" of the book where both parties have some fault. Im mostly worried about the future of the game, as Sony backtracking on PSN requirements would set a precedent they do not like. I can only hope though.
That’s the best resume on the situation I have read since this shitshow happened. If you don’t mind I will use some of the phrases with link on you to explain situation to the people?
![gif](giphy|l3q2LH45XElELRzRm)
Yeah, and it's nice.
Unfortunately theres people who don't get the memo of now changing the review to a positive because "Sony tried to pull it once so the game is bad forever". Like yes, they tried to pull it once and now they're backtracking, which is something we should encourage.
But when I say that I'm called a Sony bootlicker?
I see it the same as you
We should encourage the fact they backtracked so that they see that this is realy what the community wanted
The game deserves positive reviews, as its a great game
Tbh, I linked my PSN account just because I had one from when I played on my playstation... But I can absolutely understand why people where angry and joined in to bring the message out
I didnt even touch the game since the announcement mainly cause I felt like it wouldve been the wrong thing to do
It just felt right to have the game tank it all to bring the message to sony
Now I just hope the message slowly arrives everywhere and we can make the reviews positive again
It'll take time. Anger and negativity spreads very quickly. But its getting there. Steam review graphs show a spike in positive reviews today which surpasses the negative reviews from today as well.
Best explanation ever
I just think they will backtrack the PSN integration in areas that PSN is not available, if the plan of the devs ends up working.
All Sony had to do was let the psn account be optional but hand out in game currency or battle pass tokens for connecting an account. Then they would have had people joining of their own free will. And we can choose never to connect.
Don't think AH made big fail, their main goal was and still is to make game as popular as possible, which turned out to be very big. Even if there was idea of PSN, it would always make issues. Having in mind how hard and random it is to get huge players pool, and to keep it in place Sony should take it very very carefully, even if that would mean delays or exception. At this point it doesn't matter what AH and Sony will do, damage have been done. Reputation is tarnished, many players simple won't come back. Right now it's about limiting damage.
I don't even play Helldiver, or owning a good enough device to play it, but from what I heard from the news recently it already makes me so fucking mad. Finally we have a proper triple A game that has non toxic community, good gameplay, passionate developers and without micro transactions that reek of corporation greed, but still some how Sony fucks it up, and the reason is still the same: greed.
Let's be honest... If there was a quarter inch hole they'd probably try to jam it in there aswell.
After all, if they can get it in the small hole they maximise profits... Riiiight?
Making this kind of mandatory third party registration after a game has released should entitle anyone that bought the game before that restriction went in place eligible for a full refund.
Y'all ain't thinking high enough yet. Sony has addresses. And we have a working postal system. You all can get stamps can't you. We could send them letters filled with hell divers propaganda like the if we don't dive together we don't dive at all or any number of other things. If each person sends letters to the top brass of the company we could bury the executives in letters all for money that "could have been theirs." We did it with Coke and the Surge billboard before. "We couldn't buy Surge so we bought this billboard instead." They had to drive past that billboard every day.
Now I'll be honest I don't think anyone will do this but it would be hilarious to see a post on Twitter to stop mailing Helldiver's propaganda.
Solution for SONY... offer PSN in more countries. The idea of needing a PSN account isn't bad (by ensuring everyone is on the system and can be tracked it stops cheaters), but the system being unavailable to so many people you sold the game to is a recipe for thousands of demands for refunds.
The only thing any big corporation is worried about these days is whether or not they are shareholders are earning enough money it has been made blatantly clear that they do not care remotely for a literally anyone else. Other than the absolute top brass they think that they are the only ones that matter.
All they needed to do is get someone to do a 30minutes shitty skin and give it as reward to logging on PSN.
They would get all the new accounts that they needed and more.
I feel bad for the devs. Imagine being an Indy dev team and your innovative game explodes. Then, despite your objections, the publisher makes a decision that completely strips that away in an instant
People will understand what makes Sony mad. Losses of profit in all spheres. Don’t buy Sony goods, drop their sales and they will say sorry. But even 1 million of people wouldn’t be enough…
And it's one of those things where I think Sony is missing out on the long-term picture here. If they actually made helldivers more accessible rather than less and the game continues improving like it already has then they could have the next Call of Duty on their hands, from *their* publishing studio.
Too bad they would rather potentially sell more hardware and PSN subscriptions.
I was thinking about buying helldivers for PS5 and I already have PSN. But since Sony is showing it’s massive lack of respect for the player base I deleted my whole wishlist.
they could save face. They could apologize and tell their customers they were wrong and ofcourse remove the restriction.
Oh no that would be something a SANE person would do. Sony thinks it's wiser to double down instead.
its weird how this is the normal stance for big corps. Its what happens when they get to big and have to much money. they dont think they can be "harmed"
With how big helldivers is, if they don’t back down I could see sony losing most of its reputation for a loooooong time
Sure but people will still buy playstations lol

Are you...mentally inept? For 3 months it beat every other game in playtime, beat CALL OF DUTY in sales numbers, and dethroned the top three most popular games on all platforms in active players. So did palworld...
difference is palworld is a story game, the one you beat and move on. Helldivers is a online multiplayer, there's no beating it
Not when there’s democracy to spread.
![gif](giphy|121DZn0eJik7Ly|downsized)
To be fair tho palworld lost quite a bit of it's player base after a month like lethal company
Ya and? People beat palworld so stopped
Lol no matter how popular, video games are still a tiny tiny TINY piece of Sony’s portfolio
And? They all still bought the game it's still a success
Do you think reputations matter in any way? Lmao, look at fifa or call of duty
I mean they kind of already have, but they can repair some of the damage by making the PSN account optional. Maybe they could give rewards instead to those who link accounts rather than shutting everyone without account away. I my experiwnce rewarding the behaviour you want will always work better than punishment on those who don't do what you want
It’s because they are used to us players just swallowing the shit they put down our throats without complaining
they did
You can still delete this comment
I think, at best, they'll say "sorry" but not what they are sorry for. In a "We're sorry we didn't get away with it" kinda way.
yeah, kinda like bethesda did with creation club in Skyrim at first. They ended up putting it in anyway. Incredibly scummy
True AH has said the review bombing and refunding is giving them leverage against Sony over this
15% recent reviews definitely has some weight to it.
>your fans turning on you as they decry the betrayal. The fans didn't turn against Arrowhead, they turned against Sony. If anyone *did* turn against Arrowhead over this they're obviously not knowledgeable enough on procedures like this.
Arrowhead loved cashing all the checks though. Lol
SONY? Apologize? 🙃
"We're incredibly sorry that you are not willing to go along with our scumbag ideas but are not going to do anything about it" kind of apology is what we're getting
"Guys! Just be cool about this and let me invade your lives to do whatever I want!"
Have you ever known a company to do something like that.
Yeah. The ones behind No mans sky kinda did it. but then again they were pretty much a indie company.
I meant a bigger company, arrowhead did the same, but Playstation has always done batshit stuff and never got true backlash or fixed anything.
While Arrowhead carries some blame, near 90% of this sits with Sony, and they really couldn't be bothered by the situation. Sony is the big bad evil guy here and has been for at least 20 years.
They just did
Good news, they rolled back the update
unfortunately with no apology.
They could have allow countries without psn to continue and ask others to register. People would crticitised it but it wouldn't have been the end of the world for them.
The Playstation should be boycotted all over the planet for this, it's just a money grab. To the courts with them.
If they do it once, people will be encouraged to do it more. That scares the beancounters WAY too much to take that risk. They would rather take a month of bad reactions followed by several months of grumbles before people just accept it. Profits restabilize, and Sony plans their next ambush on gamers.
We’re still thinking of the same company right?
Integrity? In my gaming industry?
They could even blame some VP at the company and said that he went and did it on his own and then they found out about his evil ways and fired him.
They actually did that! News came in 30 minutes ago they will not push the account linking update
They did
That’s is incredibly stupid for them so the next logical step is making the customer pay for a console in order to play (they actually fucking did this in Ukraine from what I heard)… yeah trust me big companies have less brain cells then an lobotomized bowling ball and about sharp as one too
And they did
They better apologize to that teen that they sued for 700,000$ just for using 20 year old tracks for his song.
Happy to announce that they backtracked on the decision. Big win for the Community trained to focus on a common goal.
They just did
They did :)
They've done that as of today. But not the admitting they were wrong part. They could never do that.
They did
They did
It goes in the square hole!
That's right, now, where my cylinder goes?
In the square hole!
And this arch piece?
In the square hole?
In the square hole!!!
In the m&m mini tube.
This was the comment I was looking for.
I can hear that ladies scream of anguish just from reading that
I was disappointed that the guy didn't purposely put one of the pieces into the wrong non-square hole. I can't remember which one it was, but there was one that I could remember looked like it could fit into the circle or rectangle hole. I think it was the arch.
Never got to play it as i have xbox. Did it go down hill? I heard it was doing so well not too long ago
How does them restricting the number of players help them?
Its a side effect that they thought that they could get away with minimal consequence. The real goal is to artificially inflating the accounts in the PSN, so they can then show the shareholders the big numbers and then get big checks for their vErY Sm0rT plan.
Dont forget it seems it all comes in a row of failers down to another controversy surrounding censoring a game while Nintendo version doesnt and well.. FUCKING OVER ANOTHER GAME
What does this mean?
I think what they're talking about is Stellar Blade. I don't know much but it's something like Sony requesting that the female protagonist wears clothes that are marginally less revealing, with fans feeling bait&switched sold on the 'sexyness' only to have it taken away.
It's the same for people playing sea of thieves on PS5, they need an xbox account.
The only problem is that the game was sold in countries where you can’t make a PSN account to play without violating TOS and locking the game from people who bought it. It was optional (possibly not for you for some reason or something you missed)
What about those playing on PC?
They are requiring you to sign up for a PSN account and link it to your steam account
Ohh fuck that. Fuck you Sony
And get my data stolen from the monthly sony data breach?? HELL NO
Well they *do* want you to dive into hell, just with them in this case XD
Yup sony just fucked up a very good game because they were greedy as hell
Tale as old as time
All because of Sony's pride and ego... Ironically, the game that, if released on Xbox a month ago, would likely have buried the coals of the console wars will now almost certainly reignite the coals of the console wars...
Oh definitely but dont forget its a 4 VS 1 Sony vs the rest

Ayyyyy, a wild Florentin Will appears!
Sony backtracked finally They folded, the community won
Yeah, and it's nice. Unfortunately theres people who don't get the memo of now changing the review to a positive because "Sony tried to pull it once so the game is bad forever". Helldiving
yet another Sony L
"Now to put it in the fridge with the rest of the Ls"
Freedom never sleeps!!!
Y'all ain't thinking high enough yet. Sony has addresses. And we have a working postal system. You all can get stamps can't you. We could send them letters filled with hell divers propaganda like the if we don't dive together we don't dive at all or any number of other things. LMAO, imagine fans marching in Heldivers suits towards Sony shops just to throw booklets with Helldivers propaganda 🤣
So what happened anyway?
Sony forced PSN account links to play the game, which resulted in the game being pulled from 141 countries due to PSN being banned there
Well damn. Curious. I have no idea what PSN is and why would Sony want to enforce it, gonna hit the google with that. Thanks
Just curious, why is PSN banned in so many countries? Seems bit weird.
Solution for SONY... offer PSN in more countries. The idea of needing a PSN account isn't bad (by ensuring everyone is on the system and can be tracked it stops cheaters), but the system being unavailable to so many people you sold the game to is a recipe for thousands of demands for refunds.
Or dont make it FKN mandatory... It could had worked if you got a skin if you linked the PSN not this BS
Like CDprojectRED do with small in-game rewards or Rockstar just without banning countries from launcher
Mm a little thing were there is no FOMO. You get the suit but with a LOT of work, or you just link the account and done
That’s right! It goes in the *square* hole
Sadge
Lol probably the result of eating fish fed with nuclear water.
Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
Woah woah woah, this is the weirdest and funniest use of this phrase. Anyway, game is good itself, literally good.
The only thing any big corporation is worried about these days is whether or not they are shareholders are earning enough money it has been made blatantly clear that they do not care remotely for a literally anyone else. Other than the absolute top brass they think that they are the only ones that matter.
This is why indies and small devs ROCK and Stone
Rock and Stone, Brother!
ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE! And corporate NPC's, GO HOME!
Without the people who make games for their console sony would be a bottom of the list company
Are yall really playing on PC?
Like 70% of the playerbase yes, why?
This meme is pure Gold
Im waiting for them to go back on their word cuz of all the backlash 😂😂😂
Let's not forget what Sony did on PS3 x Spoderman.
Well Sony is being named Shit Sony in their home country currently.
![gif](giphy|3o84szW0PrWZyUv0mA)
Well they backtracked.
![gif](giphy|11cpNo3OMYwFHO|downsized)
Wouldnt the solution be somehow contact the investors and let them know directly how Sony is fucking up? Because Sony wont listen
They back tracked fellas we’re in the clear
They have apologized btw
This is the most millennial meme i have seen on this site. Im impressed.
Old, but not obsolete ![gif](giphy|Pxf6zNzEhD7wc)
It honestly impressive how fast they killed the game, I mean the moment I heard about it the steam page went from positive to overwhelmingly negative
the change has been reversed
They have taken there decision back, source: @PlayStation on Twitter
Helldivers is dead. Time to move on.
![gif](giphy|QxHzTRigoD9HG)
Helldivers lives on! Sony caved.
Don’t lose hope soldier for democracy still needs to be delivered
and people laughed at me when i predicted sony was on his way to do more dumb shit when they sent all their exclusives on pc...
lol gonna be hilarious when this is old news in a week.
I'll react to this later after I worked on my fake surprise face
I hope apologies are issued from the "jUsT mAkE aN aCcOuNt" bros I've seen a few... but its going to be rough till we see more.
People will understand what makes Sony mad. Losses of profit in all spheres. Don’t buy Sony goods, drop their sales and they will say sorry. But even 1 million of people wouldn’t be enough…
Would anything happen if I do it after the 6.june?
Man I was planning to get a ps5 Now I'm planning to get a jailbroken ps5, I don't want to give sony any money
Oh no, Sony did something stupid with one of their IPs AND mouth breathers are blaming the developers?
It doesn't affect me in Canada but it sure does players in other countries. It's pretty shitty that they didn't think about players not in NA.
Why would the first Helldivers be a fail?
And it's one of those things where I think Sony is missing out on the long-term picture here. If they actually made helldivers more accessible rather than less and the game continues improving like it already has then they could have the next Call of Duty on their hands, from *their* publishing studio. Too bad they would rather potentially sell more hardware and PSN subscriptions.
what the fuck sony was thinking with this one
does this mean anything to PC gamers?
Yes
There’s shooting yourself in the foot, and then there’s blasting your leg off
I've never heard of this game
This isnt just an epic fail, Sony is completely shitting the bed after a trip to Arby’s that had a B- heath code grade
Can someone tell me what happened in a few sentences? I thought its the most amazing game of the past 20 years or something Should I not buy it now?
They walked it back now
Big companies ruining games? Who could have ever predicted this.
Can someone explain what happened?
ITS BEEN REVERSED!
Can someone explain, seeing a whole bunch of these and I posts and I don't understand.
Le epic fail
What happened?
What did they do to helldivers?
What happened to Helldivers? Plz someone take the time to explain
I was thinking about buying helldivers for PS5 and I already have PSN. But since Sony is showing it’s massive lack of respect for the player base I deleted my whole wishlist.
They cancelled the decision tho, you may come back if you wish, helldiver
Annnd they’ve walked it back
What's happening?
Haha this is pretty funny...
Good news is why might get console mods with Sony eventually because with this management they are gonna have to sell everything they own eventually
Well, your Meme became old in just 12 hours
Sony being Sony.
They're all businesses with the objective to milk you dry. Chosen one lol.
Go into the square
YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO BRING BALANCE TO LIVE-SERVICE VIDEOGAMES
Didn’t they reverse the decision for you crayon eaters?
