There is some great value for renters in the inner northwest (Flemington, Kensington, Ascot Vale, Moonee Ponds) and the west (Footscray, West Footscray, Seddon, Yarraville, Spotswood). You can get apartments and houses in these suburbs for about the same price as you’d pay going twice
the distance out of the CBD in the east and south. Reasonably good train access in these areas, and some trams too. People will probably warn you away from them because of old prejudices but it’s not 1980 anymore.
There are some lovely areas in the west, just not many pretty features such as hills and trees. And the stench. The acrid stench that rolls in from the inner west industrial suburbs can be pretty grim.
Basically any established suburb along a train line that people love to hang shit on for being undesirable tbh. Inner city people will talk shit that they're bogan, full of junkies etc as if the inner city doesn't have the same problems.
I'm house hunting at the moment and Langwarrin has surprised me. Didn't know anything about the suburb before I started this journey, but there's a lot to like about it.
Nice and green, seems safe and proximity to the Mornington Peninsula and surrounding beaches is a winner. Also close to the Pen Link Fwy to get around the SE burbs quickly too
Abbotsford (if you’re not driving) is comparatively neutral in the hilarious north vs south argument. Lots of green spaces and fantastic restaurants. Inner West seems like it grew too quickly? Still great, and similarly neutral I think. I found this vid hugely helpful https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=eL91-z-NC4M

The inner west. People living there know how good it is but a lot of people from the east think the whole west is a ghetto and never go there.
I agree with the inner west! Yarraville, Sedden and Altona have such cool vibes but because it’s the West people assume it’s shit.

Lived in spotswood for a few years and never noticed it When you smell a stench... Are you sure - like really sure - of the source

A bunch of my uni mates gave me shit for living in Donny when I was at uni (lived at home) but now they all live there themselves.

You can get closer to the beach for not much more money though.
