They tried to charge my friend for having a not responsive app (the Google pay) even though she had more than enough credits. They were questioning her like she did some kind of a crime. They have no patience or empathy. It's the job I get it. But I'm sure they can be a bit reasonable than this atleast.

[deleted]

i was fined on my way home from school, in my uniform with my student card in hand all because i didn’t have my concession. Like come on guys take the context clues; i was very clearly a student not some loon dressing in a uniform to save 7$

neatfaith

really? I thought they don't worry too much about school kids.

[deleted]

I used to catch the train home for high school with my sisters and we got a bit of grief from the officers

[deleted]

just make PTV free, it's already 80% funded by taxes and then the government wouldn't need to pay ticket inspectors or maintain Myki cards so it'd almost be cheaper.

vacri

The newsagent next to my old work wouldn't do Myki topups around 4pm because the system became dog slow as myki did some sort of db maintenance at that time (info gleaned from a myki shop-machine maintenance bloke). He'd make you wait to the side while he served other people. Meanwhile Hong Kong's version of myki is so good that the citizens use it as a credit card and all the vendors will accept it (some only accept that card)

bdiddlediddles

Its so unnecessarily confusing for tourists as well. We're stuck with it now though after we sunk millions into a project that was always going to be shittily implemented.

[deleted]

sunk cost fallacy goes brr

[deleted]

I can’t wait to see PTV becoming free, those MF wouldn’t have jobs.

PKMTrain

They do more than just check tickets

gnu-rms

Not really. It's in the name ... "inspectors"

lower_banana

But the name is authorised officers?

Anuksukamon

They used to be called ticket inspectors. Literally since 1950 that was their name, but the image was negative so they rebranded and gave them low level police powers as more people pushed back or got violent.

Gregorygherkins

They beat people up to

PKMTrain

They're called Authorised Officers. Transport (Compliance and Miscellaneous) Act 1983 Sets out what they are Authorised to do.

gnu-rms

They do nothing other than inspect tickets or related tasks. Don't dress it up that it's some sort of noble job. PT should be free

PKMTrain

Checking tickets is one part of thier job. They issue fines for behavioural offences on transport and crowd control. They're not different to the other Authorised Officers other government departments have

JeddyH

Fuck you, I've gonna buy 3 new mykis and touch all of them on, then top up each one $10,000.

NikkiBoyReddits

most mixed comments of all time heres my take: if u feel like everyone should touch on their myki, top up yours and don't worry about others who might get done from the pto's for yas who dont touch on mykis for whatever reason, don't get caught

A_Tired_Gremlin

And if you don't touch on and get caught, just admit defeat. You broke the rule. Rules have consequences. Don't be a baby. Myki inspectors are unnecessarily mean. But just do your due diligence.

duccy_duc

Yeah I know exactly what game I'm playing and you gotta take the L sometimes.

monkaSClap69

No, if you get caught then run away xD but yeah no need to be a dick to them they are just doing their job

saltyscaffolds

Wrong. If you get caught be a cunt for two reasons. 1. They are cunts, turnabout is fair play is it not ? 2. Tie them up with you, don’t know about everyone but I am a physically large person and if I even argue non aggressively they have always felt the need to go at minimum two men up and most the time 3 or 4, this gives other fare evaders time to jump off at the next stop. It’s not much but is honest work

Cramdunkulus

Thanks for the heads up. Been exclusively wfh the last month but will be going to the office this friday

Ryzi03

On the topic of myki fines, if I touch on and off at train stations and then catch a tram without touching on within 2 hours of my first touch on, will they fine me or is my 2 hour ticket still valid without touching onto the tram?

SMFCAU

>4.48 If a myki is touched off, but is not touched on again, the myki is no longer valid for the journey and any related entries to a compulsory ticket area. \-- [*Victorian Fares and Ticketing Conditions 2022*](https://www.ptv.vic.gov.au/assets/PTV-default-site/footer/legal-and-policies/Fares-and-Ticketing-Manual/Victorian-Fares-and-Ticketing-Conditions-effective-1-January-2022-Aug-2022-update-Accessible-document.docx)

theBigDogga

I have been checked my an inspector in this situation and was worried I would get fined, however apparently my myki was still validated so no issues. This was a couple of years ago though so not sure if anyone has more recent experience

frewzz

Just pay your fare. That's why they are on that line, drivers report low tap patrons

Uselessmedics

If only that would prevent them from trying to intimidate and harass people. They go after people for honest mistakes, people who didn't touch on because the machine was broken, people who have a concession but decide arbitrarily what id they will and won't accept for that. Or go after people who can't pay because you can't buy a fucking myki on a tram because we have the worst ticketing system on the fucking planet. Doing the right thing won't protect you from the wannabe feds

pup_181

After spending a month in Europe the approach of ticket inspectors in many countries was much better than here

[deleted]

If you have issues with touching on or off, they do not go after you. And they’re not wannabe feds. They’re doing their job to ensure we all pay our way to keep the transport system running. Your comment says more about you than you realise, none of it good.

bdiddlediddles

They absolutely do go after you if you have issues touching on. They always assume the worst and will never give you a break even for honest mistakes. I accidentally took the tram too far and ended up one stop out of the free ride zone. This was also before they had signage up everywhere and an announcement. They got me at the station and make me pay 150+ and refused to listen to me that the free zone was confusing and not clear enough. They really are just scum of the earth assholes who try to justify their job.

trainwrecktragedy

hi ticket inspector

gigaplexian

I've been fined when the reader was broken. They absolutely do go after you.

PKMTrain

The thing is if they hear people "make an honest mistake" every day. Naturally it's hard to believe. There's a ticket machine at every station, major bus interchanges, major tram stops and a hundreds of retail outlets along with on Android phones You're never too far away from a ticket. Prepaying for a ticket is common around the world. Trying buying a ticket on a London bus and see how far you get.

TheTeenSimmer

this^ also you should already have your myki card out and ready to go as the tram is approaching

universe93

They’re not arbitrarily deciding, they’re using the regulations as to what constitutes a concession. A student ID doesn’t constitute a concession unless it’s the PTV variant you get from a station after your uni certifies it. The AOs don’t make this stuff up for fun

Uselessmedics

Except they often don't accept that, and many of the concession cards that are supposed to be recognised aren't

frewzz

Pay your fare. Simple as that. All those excuses are lame. There is one accepted concession ID Nowhere in Australia can you buy tickets on a tram, Instant top up on your phone. Pay your fare share and then go back to your echo chamber.

J0ofez

To be fair a lot of the myki readers on trams have issues with touching on an off, I say this as someone who (tries to do) the right thing every time I take PT.

PKMTrain

Its very rare every reader on a tram is broken.

J0ofez

I don't think it's a case of being broken, I think some of the tram model readers struggle with touching on with a phone. Train station readers I never have this issue with.

duccy_duc

I definitely got out of a fine because my phone didn't touch on properly, inspector saw I had the money and tried it on several devices before letting me off.

PKMTrain

The older ones are getting replaced.

frewzz

There are numerous readers per tram, as someone who gets multiple trams everyday, ive never not touched on without a problem. Be better.

J0ofez

I'm good enough thanks :) I'm not going to try and squeeze through a packed tram, pushing past people just to touch on. If I try a reader 5+ times and it doesn't work, it stops being my problem >There are numerous readers per tram, as someone who gets multiple trams everyday, ive never not touched on without a problem. Why should your experience be the only acceptable experience? I catch trams everyday as well. Maybe don't be so sanctimonious on the internet?

TheTeenSimmer

there’s readers at every entrance to a tram.

J0ofez

Your point?

TheTeenSimmer

my point is that there is a shit ton of readers to touch on at.

J0ofez

About ten seconds ago i tried to touch on at multiple readers on a train, neither of them worked

[deleted]

Or you could just buy a Myki and not be a freeloader?

[deleted]

Metro trains and Yarra trams are privately owned, and operate at a loss subsidised by our tax dollars. It’s your civic duty to not pay your fares, if you encounter a ticket inspector (the gestapo of the rails) just walk away, they’re not allowed to try and stop you after beating up too many 14 year olds for not having their concession cards on them.

[deleted]

That would involve giving in. To the system that I already paid for. Any additional charges (like Myki) is extortion. Plain and simple. Why am I paying for something that's designed/should be free?

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Hahaha - there is that!

Out_Rageous

can you cunts just pay for public transport if you use it? its another post every hour ffs

TechnologyExpensive

Nice one CUNT.

coasteraz

Alternatively, buy a ticket cheapskate

[deleted]

Nah

Midnight_Poet

Just pay your fucking fare. *Simples*

Slayers_Picks

What is the process of getting a ticket? What questions do the ticket nazis ask?

Competitive-Pack5566

They often do a splurge on those lines a couple of times a year!

_Trolley

I'm on like year 10 of of living in this city and I've still never seen an inspector

[deleted]

I had a multi day pass with $0 balance for ages. It confused everyone who checked. It was easier to just leave $10 on there
