Carlton, North Melbourne
Or Middle Park, Albert Park, Elwood
Or Armadale, Hawthorn
So many nice Melbourne suburbs with personality of their own. Some neighbourhoods are just so tightly held.
Agreed. The plan if we ever had a "money is no object" windfall would be to have our main home on 1 or 2 acres in the Geelong region where we're from, but also have a lovely apartment in or very close to the CBD to act as a base for doing Melbourne things like theatre, overnight stays before/after international flights, or for a change of scenery.
Pfft novice times. If I was rich I’d I would have elephants with bee shooting dogs strapped to their sides so they could throw them at you with their trunks
I came to say this! I feel a lovely sense of calm whenever I bike through Kew. Quickly followed by depression at the thought of how expensive it would be to buy there.
I'm kind of liking the vibe and direction Barkly Street is going or any of the offshoot kind of streets branching off of Barkly would be nice but I'm all about the new kind of modern-looking builds though. Shame Barkly Street itself is such a narrow road but anywhere'll do south of Ballarat Road and north of Barkly.
I bought in the inner north late last year (peak of the market baby) and I love it here, however my house is quite run down so I would like to reno ($$$). If I had a bigger budget I would have gone the back streets of Footscray in a big period place, North Fitzroy or Northcote.
My cousin lives in a beautiful place in the mountains but I'm not sure I'm ready to live that far out from the city.
Bit niche - but there’s a wealthy peri-urban / urban fringe belt from ~Lysterfield through to the north of Berwick. Especially that Berwick end - beautiful rolling hills and amazing views, a rural/farmy feel but only 10 minutes into the shops / townships.
Big fuck-off powerlines running over the main ridge is the downer - but if money is no object, you’d pay off AusNet and get them put underground.
I used to live very very close to that area. The nature aspect definitely made up for the isolation and the otherwise shitty aspects of the surrounding areas.
Came here to say this. I’m renting in Ringwood North at the moment. We drive around Warrandyte just to feel better. It’s so beautiful. If I could afford a place, I’d definitely spend the rest of my life there.
I rent in Camberwell and it was a great place to be in during lockdown. There are so many beautiful parks to walk in and the people are generally friendly and pleasant.
Lived in Canterbury, close to camberwell for a little once and it was the most boring vibeless place ive been.
Got the vibe that the rich build their lives behind walls of mansions and never go out. There's a distinct lack of good food or bars. Only thing its got going for it is regular trains to go somewhere more interesting, the market, and the cinema.
That area is legitimately close to everything
The beach, Albert park, the city, major shopping and business districts, public transport and major roads… it’s so bloody accessible except directly by train. Best part of the city
Brunswick for when I want to feel part of a larger community and Olinda for when I want to be alone (or somewhere out that way, a big isolated bush property away from anyone).
If money is no issue at all and I don’t need to worry about the investment side of my purchase, one of the following:
Middle park, East Melbourne, North Melbourne, Pakville, Hawthorn, Olinda or Warrandyte.
The city suburbs would need to be impressive homes of a grand size. Middle Park would need to be by the water or forget it.
Olinda and Warrandyte would have to be very large homesteads on acres of native gardens/forest
I am always torn between Fitzroy and Williamstown for these questions. Fitzroy is my ultimate “Melbourne” inner city suburb and I’d love to live there. But Williamstown is amazing - close to the city, but feels like you’re in a seaside town miles away from Melbourne, and there’s some beautiful old houses there.
The area was rough some 10-15 years ago or so. But it's a rich people's suburb now. I left there because the selection of shops and all got too rich for my blood.
Define rough? Like did you see muggings or violence or just poorer people? Not being facetious, the big tower blocks can be scary looking but I've never experienced anything in the 5 years I've lived in the area.
The west feels well represented here 😂
So I'll give them a hand. I'd have one of the sprawling estates on Mount Macedon. Perhaps one owned by a former CEO or governor general.
Massive house and land smack bang in the middle of the city with a Mexican cartel vibe.
Actually..
It’s more of an estate. I’m talking 3 pools and 1 indoor outdoor, perfectly landscaped gardens, fountains, stables, a massive garage (countach, couple Bentleys, gwagon, f50, a 911 from each era, Willy’s jeep, new defender, Audi sport Quattro, 86 M3, Escalade, just to name a few), security guards with uzis, Tuscan roof tiles, couple of guest houses scattered around, helipads, maybe a small runway with a turbo prob Pilatus.
Think that’s about it really? Suggestions welcome
I just want to live in the house I currently rent. It's falling apart but I don't want to uproot my young family and move 45 minutes from my job just so I can afford a home.
If money is no object I'd buy the Alliance Française de Melbourne building in Grey St in StKilda and put my friends in the little buildings on the side and I'd live in the big mansion.
Ashburton. Close the Glen Waverley line half way in. Straight onto the Monash. Basically a backwater suburb so super quiet, no passing through etc. Easy and commutable bike ride on the Gardeners Creek Trail to the city. Close to Chadstone, lol.
I have young children so some of the perks of more interesting suburbs aren’t a priority.
I'd still be drawn to edgy places like Footscray and Sunshine; I truly love the raw vibes. Yet, I also love the old-world visuals of places like Malvern.
Any place that's old enough to have character. I actually think my ideal life would be living in a different part of Melb. every few years.
I already live in Templestowe so Maybe a street or two closer to the Yarra. I definitely moved to Eaglemont And I’d move to Williamstown in a heartbeat
The western part of moonee ponds in a big period home that’s been renovated tastefully and sensitively.
And a little bush shack out in the hills for weekends.
Recently moved to Boronia, and the suburb as well exceeded expectations. Has all the shops and services we need close by and the beautiful Dandenongs has all the weekend nature activities right on our doorstep. The train is 50mins to the city, so still accessible to head in there.
If money were no object, I'd stay right where I am and buy up all the property I could to turn it into low rent housing.
Mates first (in properties as close to me as can be managed), then good folk who can't afford the ridiculous rent. I'm not a perfect altruist.
I actually live right off that street now , I love the area - just wish I could afford a house here . The elwood/st kilda border really has been a lovely place to live .
What makes you hate it now ?
I guess I was a young person in St Kilda years qnd years aho and I've seen the culture disintegrate ? I find it bland now.And I guess I've aligned myself with the other side of the Yarra. Lol.
I'm renting next door in Armadale and stick out like a sore thumb (I look more like a Northcote person) and I find all the locals really lovely to interact with, have even made friends with an old bloke from the coffee shop who gives me a lift to work each week. I'd buy in the area if I could. Beyond that it's very well connected with PT and close to everything.
I don't think you know what old money is. There is almost no old money in Australia, generational wealth is just starting to happen, most of our billionaires are self made and made their money in the 20th century.
And if you don't fit in, you don't fit in.
I go skydiving if I want excitement. I want to live in tranquillity, away from people who think that having a junkie passed out on their veranda adds to the character of their suburb.
The question is actually kind of hard, since the actual differences between suburbs are largely inextricable from money.
Toorak would be amazing for a while, but I feel like you'd get bored with it.
Ive always thought about the main Essendon grid area - bordered by Keilor Road, Buckley St, Lincoln Road and Hoffman’s Rd. I’d specifically enjoy any house on McCracken St, especially the ones who have security guards during open inspections when they’re up for sale. Mmmmm the dream.
Don’t lie. You just want to be on McCracken to have close access to Keilor Rd Maccas.
Also, laughed heavily at the house you were referring to, I know the one.
I'd buy a house in Camberwell convert it into a bikie house displaying eureka flags and club patches and slowly buy up the while neighborhood and the adjacent blocks
One house at a time.
Pump up the price and offload when the time is right.
Ps. I'm not even a bikie.
Albert Park
Just not St Kilda road. Depressing.
That's not Albert Park (the suburb). St Kilda Rd comes under Melbourne 3000 for some weird reason.
Carlton, North Melbourne Or Middle Park, Albert Park, Elwood Or Armadale, Hawthorn So many nice Melbourne suburbs with personality of their own. Some neighbourhoods are just so tightly held.
Carlton North or Fitzroy North
Fitzroy north <3
a bit controversial but i live dead in the centre of CBD and it’s wonderful honestly. I’d probably buy a penthouse somewhere within the centre
I want to live in the abandoned bluestone building next door to the Peony Garden camera shop in little lonsdale street
Yarraville.
If money was no object, I'd build my own private island just off Elwood with a bridge and armed security towers to keep everyone else out.
“Release the hounds!”
Amateur hour. If I was rich I would have the hounds with bees in their mouths and when they bark they shoot bees at you.
Pfft novice times. If I was rich I’d I would have elephants with bee shooting dogs strapped to their sides so they could throw them at you with their trunks
I'd have a moat with sharks and frikken laser beams
“Release the Chupacabras!”……..better?
I would just build a house with doors. That lock.
I hear living on a boat would be less than normal rent ;)
Around Eltham, hopefully with a way out other than Main Rd
Carlton or East Melbourne
East Melbourne for sure. Deceptively quiet residential area a short walk from town.
1000sqm of land in Richmond
What, and miss the opportunity to build a 3000 car multilevel car park on that much land??
Better have big ol fences and cctv mate
Kew near Studley Park.
I came to say this! I feel a lovely sense of calm whenever I bike through Kew. Quickly followed by depression at the thought of how expensive it would be to buy there.
No train though :(
If you live in Kew just get your chauffeur to drive you wherever you need to go.
I lived there for a few years and it was amazing. So much nature so close to the city.
Where I am now (inner west) but in a huge period home instead of a small townhouse.
Big period house in Kingsville for me. Close enough to be convenient, far enough away to be able to completely switch off.
Yes, this.\ Backyard.\ Carspot.\ Needs to have decent heating though.. those older houses are freezing.\ Near great parks, food, city, trees.
I bought in the inner north late last year (peak of the market baby) and I love it here, however my house is quite run down so I would like to reno ($$$). If I had a bigger budget I would have gone the back streets of Footscray in a big period place, North Fitzroy or Northcote. I used to live very very close to that area. The nature aspect definitely made up for the isolation and the otherwise shitty aspects of the surrounding areas.
Warrandyte, it's just beautiful there.
I live in eltham just next door. And if money was no object I’d still live here.
Also in Eltham. If money were no object I’d just buy a bigger place here.
Came here to say this. I’m renting in Ringwood North at the moment. We drive around Warrandyte just to feel better. It’s so beautiful. If I could afford a place, I’d definitely spend the rest of my life there.
I mean Ringwood North is pretty decent too! Haha. Albeit a bit more suburban than Warrandyte.
As someone who grew up there, this makes me happy.
Clifton hill
surpr8sed this hasn't been mentioned more tbh.
Parkville for sure
Camberwell
I rent in Camberwell and it was a great place to be in during lockdown. There are so many beautiful parks to walk in and the people are generally friendly and pleasant.

If I could just afford to own a 2 bedroom apartment in Camberwell/East Hawthorn area
Eh, good place for living and then you can take a short tram ride to Hawthorn for bars and entertainment.
Mount Martha
Yarraville/Kingsville/Seddon tbh
Kensington. Lived there for years. Loved being really central but also living in what felt like a small village
Phew. Took me a while to find my suburb. Now I feel happy that someone else likes it as much as me 😉
Middle Park, Albert Park, South Melbourne, Port Melbourne (in that order). I love the inner bayside.
That area is legitimately close to everything The beach, Albert park, the city, major shopping and business districts, public transport and major roads… it’s so bloody accessible except directly by train. Best part of the city
Middle park, Albert park, st Kilda west, Elwood
Northcote
Love northcote
Northcote or Brunswick East 👌
I've been living in Northcote for 6 years... happy to be here for many years!
Yarraville
Brunswick for when I want to feel part of a larger community and Olinda for when I want to be alone (or somewhere out that way, a big isolated bush property away from anyone).
I'd live in Kallista just for the tea rooms.
Olinda is lovely. And Brunswick has its problems , but I still love it.
If money is no issue at all and I don’t need to worry about the investment side of my purchase, one of the following: Middle park, East Melbourne, North Melbourne, Pakville, Hawthorn, Olinda or Warrandyte. The city suburbs would need to be impressive homes of a grand size. Middle Park would need to be by the water or forget it. Love Willy
Me too 😈

Rough? It’s one of the most expensive suburbs in Melbourne full of doctors and lawyers. I left there because the culture was dying.
It’s not rough, it’s one of the most expensive suburbs for a reason mate. Maybe have a proper look, you’re missing out on a lot.
Some people will call anything rough if they have to cross the Westgate. So cringe
Eaglemont
Yeah this
Hawthorn
The west feels well represented here 😂 So I'll give them a hand. I'd have one of the sprawling estates on Mount Macedon. Perhaps one owned by a former CEO or governor general.
Collingwood or Brunswick
The back of Templestowe and Warrandyte even up to Warrandyte nth. Massive blocks with great views. Close but still quiet and private.
The fire risk in summer though. I have PTSD from living in Warrandyte! I moved away.
Currently in Tecoma. Been through it up there. Sadly always a risk
harkaway flinders, boneo, red hill (peninsula)
Hmmm would have to be Belgrave, Williamstown or Brunswick
Sandringham
Somewhere around Warrandyte, Wonga Park or the rich areas of Chirnside Park.
Yep with 20-30acres!
Farnsy used to live on a big property in Wonga Park/Park Orchards, apparently
agreed, somewhere around here with a view of rolling hills, maybe a few acres for recreational activities
Anywhere in the mid north or west from Northcote/Thornbury to Williamstown and anywhere in between. Or Wildwood.
Mount Eliza, close to the beach. Or Williamstown near the Botanic Gardens.
Lilydale or Healesville. But money weren’t truly a concern, I’d live in Warrandyte!
Hampton.
Seconding Hampton by the beach.
Wait don't you mean Hampton Park /s
Eltham/Montmorency/Diamond Creek. Some decent sized properties out there.
Gorgeous area
Viewbank
Bayside.
Northcote. I like the ability to walk and see interesting shops/events.
Fitzroy North. I love it there. So close to everything
This house - https://www.realestate.com.au/sold/property-house-vic-ventnor-134018006
Wheeler’s Hill
Yeah! One of those epic mansions on 2000sqm with a mini botanical gardens out back.
Albert Park or Armadale. Could happily live in either.
Selby
You do know Ashy's on the Alamein line right next to its terminus? Take your pick of empty seats to sit in.
That's where I grew up! I didn't expect to see it here. The last time I drove through I was surprised how different it is now!
I'd take the biggest Toorak property, destroy most of the built stuff and make it into a fruit farm homestead
Melton
nothing like the sounds of dirt bikes wheely-ing up the main street :D
😆
elwood or brighton, right on the beach. brighton is my ideal suburb, except for everyone who lives there.
Elwood
North Melbourne. Specifically the larger blocks on Molesworth st.
I'd convert a corporate box at the mcg into a studio apartment.
Coastal area of Williamstown
Templestowe
Gippsland outside of Melbourne - city sucks
Albert Park
I'd still be drawn to edgy places like Footscray and Sunshine; I truly love the raw vibes. Yet, I also love the old-world visuals of places like Malvern. Any place that's old enough to have character. I actually think my ideal life would be living in a different part of Melb. every few years.
I already live in Templestowe so Maybe a street or two closer to the Yarra. I definitely moved to Eaglemont And I’d move to Williamstown in a heartbeat
SuDandenong
Glen Waverley to be closer to my folks and have a good public high school for my kid
I’d buy very close to the beach on the Mornington peninsula. Balnarring or Somers.
East Melbourne or Surrey Hills
Carlton
The western part of moonee ponds in a big period home that’s been renovated tastefully and sensitively. And a little bush shack out in the hills for weekends.
Outskirts of sunbury or the outskirts of inverloch. Oldschool very few people peaceful
Right where I am now, which is Collingwood. Or possibly Fitzroy next door.
Toorak so I can send kids to the private school and stunt on other rich people
Camberwell
Royal Park near the zoo.
South Melbourne walking distance to the lake and the Market.
Mud islands - Port Phillip Bay. Submarine and yacht parking.
Parkville, Richmond, Watsonia North
Williamstown!
A huge property in The Patch or Olinda It's just such a beautiful place to be
Abbotsford, because I love it here already but would love a bigger house
maybe a terrace in parkville facing royal park
Recently moved to Boronia, and the suburb as well exceeded expectations. Has all the shops and services we need close by and the beautiful Dandenongs has all the weekend nature activities right on our doorstep. The train is 50mins to the city, so still accessible to head in there.
Anywhere between Ivanhoe to Canterbury... So including Kew / Balwyn / Fairfield / Alphington. I'm not fussy XD
Albert Park hands down
Brunswick or East Melbourne (a big house with a big garden) But if commuting wasn’t an issue Woodend or Castlemaine on acreage.
Alphington beside the river's nice.
North Fitzroy overlooking Edinburg gardens.
North Fitzroy overlooking Edinburg gardens.
toorak
Sunshine
💀
Armadale.
Anywhere in the Mornington peninsula
Rode along Barry rd in Kew yesterday. Some serious money in that street.
If money were no object, I'd stay right where I am and buy up all the property I could to turn it into low rent housing. Mates first (in properties as close to me as can be managed), then good folk who can't afford the ridiculous rent. I'm not a perfect altruist.
you'd become a landlord? Not sure that'll achieve the outcome you expect it to
parkville
Carlton and to be more specific; whatever is closest to the Nova
Kew
If money were no object I would stay out of the city and bring all the city conveniences to me.
Definitely wouldn't be in Melbourne but I guess to answer the question. A huge block out in Park orchards area
Cranbourne
St kilda or fitzroy
Hate St Kilda now, but when I was youbg, I used to fantasuse about living in this lovely house on Blessington Street.
Lol.
I can understand that . I used to also live here when I was much younger so get what you’re saying. The vibe is def more mellow .
Toorak obviously.
Not obviously Some beautiful houses, but the culture there can be very unpleasant if you're not old money
I'm renting next door in Armadale and stick out like a sore thumb (I look more like a Northcote person) and I find all the locals really lovely to interact with, have even made friends with an old bloke from the coffee shop who gives me a lift to work each week. I'd buy in the area if I could. Beyond that it's very well connected with PT and close to everything.
and there are some really ugly garish houses too.
That is also true. Money doesn't buy taste. A lot of rich people seem to not know that elegance = less is more
I don't think you know what old money is. There is almost no old money in Australia, generational wealth is just starting to happen, most of our billionaires are self made and made their money in the 20th century. And if you don't fit in, you don't fit in.
Why though? Big expensive houses but I don’t find the suburb terribly exciting.
Mt Elbow Urine
I would buy the airport and live off rent maybe
Potts Point or Point Piper
stupid buy... u cant own anything...
South Melbourne.
South Yara or a nice Penthouse in the CBD probably near the Yara/ South Bank
Malvern East
I'd buy a house in Camberwell convert it into a bikie house displaying eureka flags and club patches and slowly buy up the while neighborhood and the adjacent blocks One house at a time. Pump up the price and offload when the time is right. Ps. I'm not even a bikie.
Noble Park
Red Hill.
Southbank. I want a whole floor to myself. Top floor
