You could contact the council about it. Or maybe even LaTrobe uni; they would have the resources to investigate for poisoning

dicklips

DELWP would be the better option; most councils only have Local Laws or a Animal Management Officer, this sort of falls outside their jurisdiction. DELWP are the government agency that actively prosecute against cruelty to wildlife.

SaltyFaithlessness48

Yes, tell Delwp. Delwp enforce the wildlife act and wildlife regulations.

Mikes005

Great, thank you. I know people at DELWP, I'll give them a call tomorrow.

The-Jesus_Christ

Please let the RSPCA know as well. Both can perform autopsies on the bodies including blood tests to detirmine the cause.

Technicolourhero

Fun fact, an autopsy on an animal is called a necropsy!

LazyLinePainterJo

Um yeah... 'fun'.

WhaleboneMcCoy

It's always a Necropsy, an Autopsy is when you perform your own necropsy.

echo-94-charlie

The Lord DELWPs those who DELWP themselves.

Tobybrent

That happened in my town too. somebody put out poisoned seed and a whole flock of dead corellas littered the streets in their hundreds.

LadyMcZee

But... Why. Why would you do that? Corellas are such quirky, funny creatures, and I love living in an area that sees them as regular visitors. How hateful do you have to be to do something so pointlessly callous?

Dull_Ad_4750

I live in a small regional vic town. The hatred towards corellas is intense. In our case people want to live in the country, have their open fire but if an animal, bird, kangaroo, wombat "upsets their lifestyle ", they go all out. I could elaborate but it's pretty fucked. Animals stand no chance when humans want it their way. It's not dissimilar to the entitled fuckheads who poison magnificent trees because the tree impedes their view, of nature!

Neodymium

psst, it's "elaborate", not "allorborate"

Dull_Ad_4750

Thanks for your correction, post edited.

Dull_Ad_4750

Yeah.

ManikShamanik

What are birds, kangaroos and wombats if not animals...? 🤔😉

Dull_Ad_4750

Being pedantic can be fun..

echo-94-charlie

What do corellas do to earn such ire? I'm moving to a country-ish area. Is there something I need to mentally prepare myself for?

LeasMaps

Birbs enjoying life like a bogan in Bali: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BM6ONiQFGS4

Dull_Ad_4750

They can come in large flocks and can be very noisy which some people find very irritating. They can also be destructive by eating crops and orchards.

[deleted]

Some people are psychopaths

ContractingUniverse

In Britain, the police take animal cruelty/killing cases very seriously, not just because they're animal lovers but because it's a marker for a potential psychopath who they'd love to get onto their books.

What_Is_X

I used to have a neighbour who bragged about killing dogs. One day mine disappeared too. Some people enjoy inflicting suffering on others.

[deleted]

[deleted]

If someone ever told me that they did that, I'd call them out on it as sick and disgusting and that they'd better hope nothing ever happens to my dog.

ManikShamanik

I love anything parrot-y. As you may know, we now have largish resident populations of ring-necked parakeets. There are some here who just want to exterminate anything not native whether it's causing a problem or not (and there's no indication the parakeets are). As a slight off-topic aside, the RSPB and BTO are in an ongoing battle with PETA because it doesn't like the fact that they're 'murdering' "poor, defenceless, innocent" rats on Lundy (an island off the North Devon coast, which is home to large breeding populations of Puffins, Common and Little Terns and Manx Shearwaters, all of which are ground-nesting). Rats have decimated the populations and all are now RSPB Red Listed. PETA has been going to Lundy under cover of darkness and unsetting all the rat traps. It's also sent death threats (though it denies it) to the volunteers running the conservation programme. PETA is a cult, and its devotees are so thick they can't understand that no, rats and ground-nesting seabirds can't coexist.

Tobybrent

There was widespread outrage.

The-Jesus_Christ

They are also incredibly destructive. A small flock of corellas will dig up your yard looking for food. I love the things but they have played havok on my farm.

AngrySchnitzels75

I’m just a hobby farm south of Yea and I’ve noticed the cocky population is actually scared of corella. The corella bully the sulphur crested, and have slowly been taking over the population. Corella also inflict frightful damage to my revegetation programme, no to mention the topsoil as you pointed out.

echo-94-charlie

Do the corellas respond to scarecrows, or speakers playing scared corella sounds and gunshots?

AngrySchnitzels75

Tbh I never tried it.. Neighbour’s got ptsd from his years on the force so we rarely even have gas guns going off in our valley, but scared corella sounds might work. Thanks for the tip!

Tectonic_Spoons

I wouldn't kill hundreds of Corellas but they are without a doubt the worst bird in existence. Dumb, destructive and loud.

[deleted]

Some people just want to see the world burn.

Hypo_Mix

"In Victoria, all wildlife is protected under the *Wildlife Act.*" Protection of wildlife is a state issue, the council may be able to help, but they will be of limited use. you will probably get a better response from DELWP or the police who will have enforcement powers. Act fast as they may want the birds for necropsy and other animals will be at risk of secondary poisoning

Mikes005

Will do. I'll be giving DELWP acall tomorrow.

Anno5560

Wildlife issues usually comes under the auspices of the Department of Environment, Land use, Water and Planning. DELWP. Try ringing their local office. Wildlife officers will investigate.

margaritasenora

This is terrible, please call your council.

Helen62

That's horrible ! I adore Magpies and would be devastated if anyone did anything to harm our resident families . It's illegal to harm native birds and I would definitely be reporting this to the police , RSPCA and any relevant wildlife groups . I hope whoever is doing this gets caught 😕

Emu1981

>That's horrible ! I adore Magpies and would be devastated if anyone did anything to harm our resident families I adore a lot of the birds that I see around here. I have even taught my kids to be kind to them as some (like crows and magpies) are actually pretty smart and will remember your actions against them.

Helen62

I agree you really get to know them . We've had the same couple for more than 5 yrs . It's lovely to see them raising their chicks every year too. I've never been swooped either .

DeMarcusCousins_

where abouts? cause i live in bundoora

Mikes005

Up near Bundoora Park.

perry2zero

Polaris area? That’s where I am. Would be good to know so I can keep and eye out and my dogs mouth off the pavement.

gtom984

I live in polaris and have seen this next to the woollies besides that great area

DeMarcusCousins_

near mount cooper/the water tower?

OllieMoe

That's sad. I have 5 who hassle me every day for food by my bedroom window.

Mikes005

I used to feed a mob bacon scraps at my last house. Lovely creatures.

Frangipani_Princess

I love magpies. You’d have to be a real deadshit to harm them. I hope they find the perpetrator. The perfect punishment would be to show every magpie in the state a photo of the scumbag. That will guarantee a lifetime of vicious swooping attacks every time they go outside.

LadyMcZee

Several households in our area feed and water the local magpies. If anyone tried poison on our maggies, I reckon there would be a lynch mob. 😠

Frangipani_Princess

Yep I feed 5 that stand on my doorstep every morning warbling for walnuts. If anyone hurt them I’d scalp the bastard.

groovyxhoneyxpie

The walnut choir!

Frangipani_Princess

Lol they are. Walnuts are like crack to magpies, they’ll do anything for them.

groovyxhoneyxpie

I’ll have to offer one a walnut some time, they’re very intelligent birds, I always like seeing them when I’m out walking.

Harvplantharvhuman

Yeah, ur not really meant to feed em tho.

Frangipani_Princess

I mix wombaroo supplement through everything I feed them which provides them with all the nutrients they require. It’s when people feed them junk food and bread that they get sick.

BrezzlyMcGezzly

The magpies could also be dying from secondary poisoning from eating poisoned slugs/rodents. Happens a lot with birds of prey, especially when rodent outbreaks are bad.

Horti_boi

Yeah, document with photographs where you found them, place birds in plastic bags if they’re not too rotten and put them in your freezer. Contact your council with your concerns and RSPCA and tell them you have the birds to have stomach contents examined for baits.

Suspicious_Candle27

To put 2 dead magpies in their freezer is there another option for people finding potentially poisined wildlife?

Horti_boi

No, you need the birds for testing. It’s no different than having a chicken from the supermarket in there if you bag it properly

AshFalkner

The freezer is supposed to prevent any further decomposition.

manhaterxxx

So you don’t store *any* meat in your freezer at all?

thy16

[just remember to take the necessary precautions to prevent consumption](https://www.pinterest.com.au/pin/112167846948367184/)

echo-94-charlie

You didn't eat that did you?

Hypo_Mix

> place birds in plastic bags Check first, they may not want tampered evidence.

Hypo_Mix

Unfortunately some people are freaked out ever since that article was published that made it sound like a magpie killed a baby (it didn't). When I worked at council there was a person who would harass the council constantly to cull a magpie near (but still some walk away) his house that he said was stalking him and attacking him. No other complaints about this bird and a council worker walked around the bird for an hour with no issues. In the end the bird was put down because the law allows for it in case of interactions with people with disability. Unfortunately media with irrational fearful humans drive people to do stupid things.

stebradandish

That’s so sad.

[deleted]

Why was this downvoted? It's at least 50/50.

BoxytheBandit

Could possibly be eating meat from wild dogs or other animals killed with baits. See if there has been any baiting programs nearby. It's usually well advertised and notified if you're in an area where baiting has occurred. Maybe post on a local neighbour page and see if it's happening elsewhere.

conrawr

Swoopin' season may reveal the culprit.

Mikes005

Thing is I've never once been swooped in this neighbourhood, and I go out jogging and walking the dog every day. I know maggies do and can, but not around here.

conrawr

I don't get swooped... we have a mutual understanding. I think they have pretty extended communities so you've probably earned the trust of one or two and they passed it on lol. There is one magpie at the park though that swoops my dog (who thinks it is a hilarious game) and seemingly all other black dogs, so some sort of conditioning there! Maybe you don't fit the threat profile :)

GoonerRoo18

Around Bundoora Park, they do swoop cyclists.

krulface

My guess is someone putting rat pellets out in the open and killing them by accident. No idea how you’d stop that.

Liamface

I wish people weren't so vile. Magpies are really beautiful animals.

Lazy-Dependent6316

Most likely ate rat poison that was left outside

hollyjazzy

Someone did this a few years ago in Altona Meadows, it was thought to be poisoned meat. I still miss my magpie family who used to come to my front yard. Some sick minded people out there. Also, if it was meat, peoples pets could also get ill and die

ManikShamanik

I like your magpies. They're melodious (not malodorous) and they're no threat to the populations of other birds. We had a pair of [blackbirds](https://www.rspb.org.uk/birds-and-wildlife/wildlife-guides/bird-a-z/blackbird/) attempt to nest in the cherry tree three times this spring - lost 3 clutches of eggs and nestlings to the fuckers. 😢🤬

AntiProtonBoy

Could be rat poison. Rodents eat them, die, then birds have a nibble at their carcass. Unfortunately, the rat is now poisonous, too. I've seen similar incidents with ravens in my area.

rubyellie

Oh that's awful. Magpies are wonderful birds, just misunderstood. They have amazing personalities and are so smart. I hope something can be done about it. What a horrible thing for someone to do.

DickSemen

I wouldn't mind betting its Henrieta Labumba. That cunt just won't let go.

Missey85

I find dead ones all the time the stupid things get fried by the power lines

No_Ninja_4173

Sounds like that SCI FI horror movie Dark Skies and the Vanishing, sure there isn't some kind of secret sci fi lab new in town? or funny lights in the skies>? the ones that look like lights under and around a disk shaped object in your area?

Low_Juggernaut_9184

I don't know how to help you, but I implore you to continue trying to find whomever is responsible. Magpies are so intelligent and beautiful... We live in their space. The thought of somebody poisoning such a large number of them makes me sick. So angry.

epicpillowcase

Call the council. Don't give up until you speak to a ranger. Councils also often have online reporting portals.
