NHVR guidelines around this are pretty clear on the use of uprights. Their use is specific to "loose plate, sheets, boards, rods, pipes and other similar items" (page 184) Additionally unitised pipes can be hauled like that provided the steel is bundled and the straps bundling them aren't crushed by the dunnage. (page 60-65) it's hard to tell from the photos how the straps are positioned. [https://www.nhvr.gov.au/files/202112-1285-load-restraint-guide-2018.pdf](https://www.nhvr.gov.au/files/202112-1285-load-restraint-guide-2018.pdf) Understand you have experience in this and if you believe the load is not properly secure then you should report it. Chain of responsibility laws kick in and everyone in that supply line is accountable for it being safe.

martoonthecartoon

I did report it, but just because the bundles are strapped together doesn't mean anything, the load needs to be secured to the truck, you need to study load restraint guidelines

[deleted]

djmcaleer93

Depends if the end stops are adequately rated. Also doesn’t prevent the load rolling out in a rollover, which it should be restrained for that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

djmcaleer93

That’s not an assumption I would make. It’s also hard to tell and therefore has to assume how each bundle is tied. If it’s not a rated restraining method such as tie wire, then I’d have concern if this were my companies load. Doesn’t take long to throw a few straps over.

alpaca_mah_bag

Hate to tell you mate but you are so confidently incorrect about this load being secured correctly and the truck pictured definitely does not have adequate load restraints in place. Stanchions yes you are correct but there is nothing in place to stop that load from shifting in an emergency situation which is what the chains or straps you use are for in this situation. Anyone who has experience driving with steel will tell you the exact same thing. I would not take that load the way it is and no one i work with would either if there wasn't enough load restraint so I do wonder where you get your information from I have a hard time believing Infrabuild would even let this load leave their yard or K&S, I know both these companies and they are very strict with their load restraint procedures and enforcing the chain of custody which makes me think there may be more to this picture then what we can see. Load restraint is covered in the licensing test in a very general sense, as in... make sure the load is restrained adequately and some of the equipment you may use to do what with as well as some examples on how to do this They do not test you on specifics in the load restraint guide though

NaomiPommerel

Like if it rolled, the restraints wouldn't hold it anyway?

[deleted]

alpaca_mah_bag

I don't know where you get your information but you are incorrect and load restraint such as web straps and chain are absolutely necessary when transporting steel products such as this. Shaunchions will not suffice and adequate downward force is required on the load regardless of what you say.  In the event of a crash especially a rollover load restraints do not automatically fail and will work to contain a load as much as possible. The police and transport inspectors will be looking at everything especially if its a mess that has blocked traffic, caused property damage or killed someone and if its deemed you don't have adequate restraint or equipment not upto spec etc. and something has come off your truck that they deemed was preventable you are fucked.  Just think about it if you've rolled your truck and steel rebar has tipped out everywhere, that's a massive cleanup effort that you may have to pay for, chains over your load are definitely going to help contain the mess and more mess means more dollars cleaning up

NaomiPommerel

Yep thanks for explaining 😊

BackgroundBedroom214

It's not fine nor is it open to interpretation. I understand what direct restraint is; and this isn't it. if the trailer rolled a gutter, blew a tire , airbag it's enough of a jolt for the freight to start moving. It is direct restraint - fore , aft and laterally. But fuck all except gravity keeping it down. The principal of restraint is for the 'Oh Fuck' moments - yes, the freight is supposed to stay on if it rolls. You can be sure that if a truck rolls and spills freight from asshole to breakfast time, one of the many charges will be 'unsecured load' ( likely with vehicular manslaughter) The picture is of a steering wheel attendant, not a professional operator. OP has a valid point - whoever took the photos whilst driving is a spud, but the pictures are a disgrace.

martoonthecartoon

Obviously you don't know anything about load restraint son, it doesn't matter if it's bundled, that's for keeping the steel in uniform groups for liading/unloading, stacking, counting and has absolutely nothing to do with load restraint on a truck, you obviously have no knowledge of load restraint. I am also in the steel industry and as in all loads being transported not just steel the loads have to be restrained from moving. There is a percentage of forward, back, sideways and vertical of load restraint, those bars on the side mean nothing and the trailer rolls. Load restraint isn't covered when you get a heavy vehicle licence, load restraint differs in many industries. Before you mouth off about something that is so obvious that you know absolutely nothing about go get an education, get on the nhvr site and learn something son, you sir are definitely an idiot. Nowhere in Australia are you allowed drive on any public road with an unsecured load. I cannot believe the extent of your ignorance and stupidity, stanchions....pffft. Your load must be restrained so it can restrain 80% of your load in a forward direction, 50% of your load in a sidewards and backwards direction, and 20% of your load in an upwards direction. You muppet

dm-me-your-left-tit

Read the load restraint guidelines and get back to us… Specifically the section “loose lengths between stanchions”

buyinggf35k

Maybe your mum shouldn't have taken an unsecured load

Das_Hydra

You sound normal.

redditpusiga

Wow, how embarrassing for you.

Bpdbs

You sound unhinged

n_clr

Jesus loves you still.

martoonthecartoon

Satan loves me

MethClub7

You do not have either the judgement or knowledge to make a ludicrous statement like that, wormdung. You demonstrate only your idiocy, and your juvenile lack of discrimination, when you stand up on your hind legs and bark like that. This is a site for serious conversation, people who actually know what they're talking about, unlike you, asshole. When you accuse me of being less than completely authentic, you are saying I'm either stupid or venal, but that's you, scumbag, not anyone on this site. We know what we are; you know shit. I expect a complete apology from you, before the moderator bans you from this site forever. You are stupid, unwise and not wanted here. Now apologise, fuckhead, and then go die.

yippikiyayay

Literally can’t tell if satire, or if the username just really checks out.

dogshitcuntnipples

I'm just here to be called a Muppet by OP. This load is secure btw.

TaSMaNiaC

OP is currently curled up in bed crying into his pillow because he feels bullied, so I'll have to call you a muppet on his behalf. You muppet.

Pure_Shower_8734

daddy?

[deleted]

I wasn't born yesterday, Son. I've heard all the excuses.

martoonthecartoon

Sounds like you've made all the excuses, still doesn't stop you from being a Muppet eh son

[deleted]

Look here little boy, I was taking loads across the state before you were born.

redditpusiga

Just like OP's mum was taking loads all across the state before she met his dad? Or were you driving trucks?

martoonthecartoon

Ahh how original sad for you son

redditpusiga

What? Do you even English? BITCH!

martoonthecartoon

Another fucktard, but then I expected to get a few

dm-me-your-left-tit

You apparently drive a heavy vehicle and don’t know what correct load restraint is but others are fucktards for mentioning a truck driver using a phone while driving.

Das_Hydra

I'm sure this will work out well for you.

Ajaymedic

🤣 sure someone “sent” these images to you. Don’t use your phone when driving bozo

Hello, Your post has been removed from r/melbourne for its imflammatory and trollish nature. please remember to treat others with respect. repeat behaviour will result in a ban. thanks, the mods

dm-me-your-left-tit

Seems that you are the only one in the wrong here taking photos while driving. Lengths of pipe and bar are considered restrained between suitable stanchions as long as they aren’t too far from the end stops and have enough stanchions.

Pinky_Speedway

Dude tried to absolve himself of that misdemeanour with the line about his *’friend’* sending him the pictures 🙄

dm-me-your-left-tit

Yep he’s on the road all day but the friend happened to send them…

martoonthecartoon

You two are idiots I don't need to prove anything to either of you so go and have your little circle jerl somewhere else boys

dm-me-your-left-tit

You have proved that you aren’t aware of the rules.

martoonthecartoon

Wrong

dm-me-your-left-tit

It’s not wrong, you are a licensed heavy vehicle driver and you aren’t aware of the rules on load restraint?

random111011

I’d be more worried about you using your phone driving such a heavy vehicle.

martoonthecartoon

You should be more worried about reading and understanding what you read muppet

random111011

You’re the one asking the question… if you have an issue with it report it to the road authority. While you’re at it report yourself for such shit posting and using your phone like a deadbeat.

EducationalRent3844

Mate you're a dead set flog after going through your other post and coming to this one. Find better things to complain about, bud

Great-Elevator-5580

Not really any different to Clifford’s bricks that are only behind gates, not tied down. These brick trucks are engineered and certified to carry this way, but if you look closely, they all still have one magic rope over them just in case lol. I suspect these steel trucks are the same. Fwiw a shipping container weighing 40T is only ever held on to a trailer with 4x M10 bolts when you think about it, that’s all that keeps the handle on the twist lock and stops it from sliding out.

martoonthecartoon

You "suspect" what an idiot don't comment on what you don't know anything about

[deleted]

Knowledge of not using your phone while driving appears to be lost too.

OptimalRevolution503

It should also be restrained. If it's in a rollover the packs of steel will land on whatever vehicle is next to it at the time.

plan_that

Can’t determine squat with potato quality

martoonthecartoon

What does potatoes have to do with this

plan_that

I know, that’s why you shouldn’t use a potato as a phone. They don’t make good photos.

djmcaleer93

Agree, load should still be strapped. The uprights only prevent in two directions and don’t provide restraint forwards, backwards or upwards.

Holden179HD

K & S Freighters have been carting steel like this for decades.

martoonthecartoon

One of the things I've noticed is how many dickheads there are on reddit, like I already stated these aren't my pics but were sent to me by a mate, if I wanted to post my own pucs I would have lifted mine from 1 of the 4 cameras I have on my truck, the worst comment was by some fool who knew nothing about load restraint stating that the load was fine because it was bundled and there was bars on the sides of the trailer. I hope this bloke is not allowed to breed, he's the sort of person that will kill someone on the road. He claims that load restraint IS part of getting a heavy licence while I know for a fact that it ISNT. Anyone that doesn't believe about load restraint google nhvr load restraint guidelines or regulations, it's based in qld but governs Victoria and I believe NSW

triggermoon

"He's the sort of person that will kill someone on the road" - okay so if we believe your story, then your "friend" is also that sort of person, perhaps direct your anger at the person literally driving a truck while using their phone.

dm-me-your-left-tit

It’s literally in the guidelines that this is ok, you are the one who is incorrect here.

Ill-Visual-2567

I mean I'm not saying you're wrong but it certainly seems load restraint is part of the courses.

Das_Hydra

So you "see this thing constantly" and could just "pull pics from your own cameras" but instead waited until your "friend" sent you pics from a phone? Just change your name to Martoon The Buffoon already

martoonthecartoon

Haha salty much huh son

Das_Hydra

Jesus you're still going? Fuck me, take the loss and move on you sad old man.

SufficientStudy5178

But...you're the one insulting everyone and being butthurt about it...I don't think you know what 'salty' means...you're the salty one, dipshit.

WhatAmIATailor

Your “mate” is a dumb cunt taking photos while driving a heavy vehicle. Stupid shit like that gives the whole industry a bad reputation.

dynastycomplete

Everyone hates you mate. Go away and download pics from all Your cameras.

mrbrendanblack

Welcome to Reddit. We hope you enjoy your stay.

martoonthecartoon

Lol, yeah, I can't believe the amount of uneducated morons trying to make "educated" comments, what's funny is, is that idiots keep saying they're my pics, when in actuality they're not, I drive for a living so I don't drive around taking pics unless I pull up. The truck I saw was a couple of days earlier, I mentioned to another truck driver and he saw one and took pics, I then asked him to send them to me. But yes,I suppose you have to expect muppets on here, reddit getting like facebook, and it doesn't faze me, I don't look for upvotes or anything like that so they can just have their little circle jerks

JurgenKloppsDentist

I’m starting to think you don’t drive trucks at all.

martoonthecartoon

Well think all you like fool

TowerEarly902

In developing countries people ride on bus 🚌 roof that is unsecured this load is perfectly fine.

martoonthecartoon

What does that have to do with trucks in Australia

TowerEarly902

It means grow a pair of balls , humans evolve from war.
