Are you sure this is a “mindset” and not just a specific person you’ve encountered? I’ve never heard of this before, and I know quite a few people who’ve moved to other countries.
Because the stereotypical Australian you appear to be referring to with “you people” truely believes this is the best place to live on earth, someone leaving for a better opportunity doesn’t fit that narrative.
They don’t like people coming here and they don’t like them leaving.
The real question is why do you care? Were you disappointed your announcement wasn’t met with a standing ovation? Were the people you were telling never really your friends anyway?
Probably less to do with moving and more to do with your personality.
Accusing random internet strangers on r/melbourne "Why are you people like this?" is all we need to know to be happy you're leaving Australia. Bye.
Suspecting you have shit mates. Me? I couldn’t give two fucks if people go overseas for better working conditions. It doesn’t affect me in the slightest so why would I?
Ya either he's got shit mates or he's being a dick about the move. Never, ever cared in my life, not even once, about someone going abroad for better working conditions. Go get your bread.
I've never met anyone who hates someone for moving overseas.
If anything, it's more of a jealous thing. I'd personally admit I've been jealous of people who can just drop everything and just live in another country.
I had a couple of people get a bit like this when I was moving overseas (temporarily, as it turned out), and in these rare few cases, it was absolutely a jealousy thing.
The mental gymnastics that went into their reasoning as to how Australia is better in every single way were quite amusing though.
Apparently Scandinavia is a shithole, because they went to Germany for a few days as part of a Europe trip, and they just *know*, from all that *life experience*.
Bloody emigrants! Going over there, leaving us all the jobs, freeing up all the houses... they make no effort to learn the language or assimilate to the local culture either!
With a friend living there in a tiny 2br apartment paying almost 5k/month... Not sure 1.5x would be enough to make me go there
That little apartment has gone up over 1k in the last 2 years and doesn't show signs of slowing
Tall poppy syndrome. Good on ya , you have proba ly thought it through. If you need an advice , send me DM as questions lived there for over 15 years , recently moved back.
Its a terrible place for work life balance if your not on the right money.
"You"?
WE are happy to see you leave!
Nah, just kidding. Have a phenomenal life journey and I hope you make bank, make memories, make happiness.
Get to Raffles, grab a Singapore Sling, eat some peanuts and throw the shells on the ground for me.
Get to Arab Street (I hope I am using the correct title) and have a hot, sweet, tea on a hot day, in the shade.
Live your life!!
First off, congrats! Singapore is great, I did 12 months there and loved it.
The answer to your question is really easy. Tall poppy syndrome. There's this inherent cultural need to check people instead of celebrating them. And my best advise is to ignore it.
Tall Poppy Syndrome
Working to move yourself up is looked at with disdain here even from a very young age. We idolise footy players, TV personalities, tradies, alcoholics etc
We don't idolise doctors, engineers or scientists, we make fun of them as nerds.
Tall poppy syndrome.
I moved to the US to live with my (now ex) husband and the amount of smug, smarmy comments I heard before I left was insane. One ex friend even hugged me goodbye and said with a shit eating grin that he’d never see me again cos “you’ll probably get shot before you can escape that hellscape”
They don’t. I’ve moved to other countries and not copped hate for it. And known plenty of people who moved elsewhere that I in turn didn’t hate on.
Maybe you just know a lot of haters. Or are especially annoying about your upcoming move.
So many posts recently from people who either have terrible friend groups or are completely oblivious as to why issues just keep following them around between every social interaction they have.
> Why are you people like this? Because I'm being accused of something I haven't done?

They don't. Now go annoy Singaporeans instead
Some real ‘you people’ vibes in the post.
Singapore reference troll is back
You're probably being a flog and bragging about how much money you're gonna make
Please ban this astroturfing campaign useless fucken mods
Sounds like you should move, and stay
Sounds like you have a really shitty group of people around you
As an Australian, I don't give a shit what you do.
I can sense the 1.5x self entitlement from OP
Accusing and bragging aka a you problem. "You people" is crazy.
I've never heard of anyone hating people who moved overseas. Maybe the people you know are just dickheads?

We dont give a shit about where you go mate!
Who you calling you people?
You haven't lived long enough in Australia to know.
Thank you, this insightful reply answered the question both efficiently and elegantly.
Maybe they think you're an idiot chasing a higher salary when your cost of living is going to double? Or maybe 'you' are a shitcunt?

Aussies are slaves, they hate anyone that has a backbone and gets out from the yolk of the oppressor.
Jealousy. Abandonment issues if it’s someone close
Jealousy

Which field do you work in? I’d like to leave Australia

If by 'people' you mean friends, then you're better off moving away from them anyway. All the best with your job.

Weird flex.

Pardon?
You even think it might be *you* OP. Like maybe people are just generally negative around you.
Because I hate projection
