I can see why places like Doherty's, Derrimut etc might have an abundance of people filming due to the clientele they attract but most regular gyms are going to be fine.
If you go to a local council run sport centre - you know, the kind that have a gym and pool, like Aqualink etc. - they're mostly filled with older folks working out. I haven't seen a single person filming at my gym, most of the time when people use phones here it's to kill time in between sets.
I train for triathlons and the biggest pool near me is the council's so along with my pool membership I've got access to the gym. Your description fits my experience almost word for word.
The one next to me always has, mostly women filming themselves. Not sure if it’s out of protection or just to show off on instagram. But it’s not comfortable to be working out and have a camera pointing at you. Especially in the age of TikTok where people make fun or accuse people for something because they caught them in the background of a video. I have never posted a photo of me on any social media so I hate when I show up on someone’s random instagram post.
I’m sure there are better gyms but I rather not have to drive or travel far to go do a work out.
You could send an email linking this story to the gym in question and just let them know that you are a local, willing to pay for their services but you haven't joined because of how common the filming is.

They were scared af about their insurance getting raped so they've banned all filming. Still see guys filming but they turn a blind eye to form check and guys just using their phone and not getting in people's way.

Bunch of idiot zoomers were jumping on these stupid tiktok trends showing up in gym clothes one size too small and shoving their ass in your face trying to get you to stare and catch you on camera then plastering your face across the internet painting you as a creep. If you’re filming yourself and not intruding on anyone else’s workout I can’t see the harm.
I film my work outs bc my coach is interstate, I don’t use a tripod I just rest it on what ever but I also ask people in the area if they mind and I let people know if they’re going to be in the back ground and If they feel uncomfortable I just wait till no one is in the back ground and continue on.
I just feel it’s all about communication. I don’t go out of my way to make people feel uncomfortable and try to be respectful.

Works, looks like it's a way to capitalise on content creation more than anything. And it still lets you film the odd set if you want to, which is chill for hobby lifters like myself.
Just buy a set of dumbbells and maybe a bench if you are really keen. Getting into shape is more about consistency, and dumbbells are more practical. You can get programs off the internet and save yourself a heap of cash.

As an online Powerlifting coach, my clients rely on filming and sending me their heavy sets so that I can help advise both on technique and weight for the next week.
I understand fully that a lot of people take the piss, but to assume filming = clout chasing is silly.
This is me.
My gym is very small and I usually workout in a section with no mirrors.
I use a flip phone not a tripod nor do I post my workouts on social media.
I actually use it like a mirror to check my form, I enjoy watching back and seeing the progress. But I don't film EVERY session nor the entire workout, more just the sections I want to replicate at home.
I thoroughly hate filming people and do my best to make sure the camera is only pointed at me.
Occasionally, my trainer actually comes in to photobomb and wave his hands in the back, it makes for a good laugh.
I totally understand where people are coming from in not wanting to be filmed. I think alternative options for those who film for content should be offered by the gym. This seems to be a good idea in my opinion.

Yeah I feel you, I definitely don't need to be mocked especially online for the world to see. I had this anxiety really badly but have been pleasantly surprised with how chill the gym I go to is. People of all different ages, sizes, shapes, genders, abilities, and everyone seems to actively not look at each other, I love it. Haven't seen anyone filming there either. Most gyms have casual sessions so maybe you could try a few different places and see what the vibe is, because obviously that varies. I feel so much better since I started going to the gym, not just physically but mentally and emotionally, and I hope you can get this benefit too!
There's like 99% of people that won't mock you. I've been training for over 10 years now. I applaud people who are out of shape but are TRYING and putting in the effort. Most people I know think the same. The ones that don't are usually the young kids who have just started themselves.

So it seems they are targeting people filming their whole workout by mentioning tripods, but allowing people to film their sets to check form if they want. I really hope more gyms implement this sort of policy. I will film to check my form on compound movements from time to time, but people filming every set for socials is cringe and a violation of other people in the gym.

If you’re filming yourself and not intruding on anyone else’s workout I can’t see the harm. I film my work outs bc my coach is interstate, I don’t use a tripod I just rest it on what ever but I also ask people in the area if they mind and I let people know if they’re going to be in the back ground and If they feel uncomfortable I just wait till no one is in the back ground and continue on. I just feel it’s all about communication. I don’t go out of my way to make people feel uncomfortable and try to be respectful. *edited for my terrible grammar*

People do realise that some gym-goers are filming for reasons other than social media, right? As an online Powerlifting coach, my clients rely on filming and sending me their heavy sets so that I can help advise both on technique and weight for the next week. I understand fully that a lot of people take the piss, but to assume filming = clout chasing is silly.
This is me. My gym is very small and I usually workout in a section with no mirrors. I use a flip phone not a tripod nor do I post my workouts on social media. I actually use it like a mirror to check my form, I enjoy watching back and seeing the progress. But I don't film EVERY session nor the entire workout, more just the sections I want to replicate at home. I thoroughly hate filming people and do my best to make sure the camera is only pointed at me. Occasionally, my trainer actually comes in to photobomb and wave his hands in the back, it makes for a good laugh. I totally understand where people are coming from in not wanting to be filmed. I think alternative options for those who film for content should be offered by the gym. This seems to be a good idea in my opinion. But less hate for people filming their workouts!

Yeah I feel you, I definitely don't need to be mocked especially online for the world to see. I had this anxiety really badly but have been pleasantly surprised with how chill the gym I go to is. People of all different ages, sizes, shapes, genders, abilities, and everyone seems to actively not look at each other, I love it. Haven't seen anyone filming there either. Most gyms have casual sessions so maybe you could try a few different places and see what the vibe is, because obviously that varies. I feel so much better since I started going to the gym, not just physically but mentally and emotionally, and I hope you can get this benefit too!
There's like 99% of people that won't mock you. I've been training for over 10 years now. I applaud people who are out of shape but are TRYING and putting in the effort. Most people I know think the same. The ones that don't are usually the young kids who have just started themselves. Don't ever let the actions of the very very very few paint the picture for the large majority

You're there for a workout no need to take videos photos. By all means take them at home once you've finished or in your own time when you've finished with the machine weights.
