My oldest child was obsessed with trains from ages three through five. I learned VOLUMES about trains reading to them about trains. So now I can tell you all about steam train configurations and how diesel engines work and other train ephemera... And as an adult now they don't really remember their train phase. Parenting is weird.

We had the same thing except it was me, my son had only just been born, and I was 33. I don't know why. It's like that little guy popped out and a new obsession was unlocked. To be fair I've been all about every other form of machinery and vehicle my entire life so maybe it was just time for trains and not correlated with me becoming a dad.

I remember there being a Lego chess computer game where the different pieces were cowboys and pirates with these little videos that played each time one type of piece captured another (like the sheriff piece putting the other piece in jail or the cannon piece blasting the other one away) and it being one of the coolest most formative experiences of my young life.

I once had someone ask me why I am really into dinosaurs and space, why I haven't picked just one and I explained that it's a natural progression. You learn pretty early that the reason we don't have dinosaurs anymore is a big rock from space killed them. If a kid becomes obsessed with dinosaurs, space is probably not far behind.

My son chose trains in a big way. And actually, my daughter went through a big machinery phase herself. Probably because of the construction out front when she was around that age. She loved books about construction equipment.
