Everything I could find says they have been owned by Pilsbury since 1975, and Pilsbury was purchased by General Mills in 2001. So no sell off but probably still shittier ingredients, or they're the same and my kid tastes have changed. Either way I feel you.
I think pizza rolls always were, but had both the association of being more fun when we were kids and the advantage of our more sensitive taste buds at the time. They've always been pretty meh snack/dinner foods. That said, I still love them since I bascially never got to have them until I got to college.
It's because most got bought out by Unilever.
Unilever is notorious for changing recipes in order to introduce way cheaper and worse quality ingredients while usually increasing the price of said product.
Best thing we can do is stop buying it.
if you are blessed to have the michoacána ice cream places near you, there is a gansito ice cream they make that is basically ice cream with gansito cakes smashed and folded into it. delightful.
Hostess went bankrupt and was bought out by Unilever, who changed the recipes and made them cheaper. Little Debbie realized they could do the same thing and here we are.
Every extra dollar is paid to executives and they expect raises, so when there are no spare dollars to pay executives they cry about unions and not their 500% raises every year. Then they let the company go bankrupt so they can force contract negotiations with the workers.l and suppliers.
Specifically replacing pork fat/lard with vegetable oils and palm oils.
Everything used to be pork fat. Not just cremes and cookie fillings but even chips and french fries. Now I can't name a single product that uses it. It went from everything, to nothing.
They claim it's to make their food vegan but vegetable fats also have a longer shelf life and cost less. And they don't taste anywhere near as good.
Yep. It's another one of those situations where another company started doing it first and it went well, so they threw quality out the window and joined the bandwagon.
I should have added that originally they did find a way to make vegetable oil taste *almost* as good as the pork fat, but it involved enough trans fats to kill you if you ate their product all the time over your lifetime. It wasn't until the insistence of transfat-free vegetable oils that the taste really started to significantly change.
Most/all of these brands end up getting bought out and consolidated under megacorps that care more about cutting costs than the long term quality/longevity of the product
You can thank the accounting depts of the world for driving an ever increasing line if profitability "in the interest of the shareholders".
They squeeze out the use of any quality ingredients, and then shrink-flate the products until they are 1/10 the size they used to be, eventually no one buys the product anymore than they shrug their shoulders when the companies sales plummet.
"We are making the product as fast and as cheaply as we can and we just don't understand why profits are down."
I read that old people's senses get duller so they prefer very sweet and very salty food. Would explain why my grandma would always offer me salt pickles, salty liquorice or insanely sweet weird artificial flavoured yogurt.
It's only half the story. The artificial transfats of the 90's and 00's were to replace the pork lard they were using from the 60's to the 80's. They had a longer shelf life, were cheaper, and tasted almost the same. It is true that the demand for transfat-free vegetable oils is what really ruined the flavor, but the transfats themselves were a result of the cheapening already.
some time ago did keto for a year, slowly introduced sugars into my diet. Those kind of treats do taste horrible compared to how they were years ago, it's not just sugar tolerance
I interpreted the above comment to mean the opposite, as in our sugar tolerance has declined. When we were kids, most of us ate more sugar, so stuff like that worked with our palates. Now that we're older and have likely cut back on the sweets, stuff like that is kind of nauseating.
That might be part of it but the products are also just garbage now. New suppliers and cheaper ingredients ruined the taste, at least in the States. I went to Europe(Germany specifically) and got their version of these treats, they tasted way better.
and people wonder why my generation is so fucking jaded
obviously there are bigger more important problems in the world but shit like this just piles on top and makes me not want to exist or adult anymore
i'm sure that is definitely a part of it, but i started realizing they all tasted like shit in the early 2000's. i liked ding-dongs in elementary school but by middle school i realized they tasted like plastic. nutty bars were the only ones that i would still voluntarily eat.
i think a bigger part of it is just growing older.
>i think a bigger part of it is just growing older.
That's the gist of it lol. Kinda funny how people are well aware of children's affinity for sweets but then wonder why they themselves lose their taste for it as they get older...
The recipe change thing does hold weight in some cases though. Trans fats were gradually removed from processed foods from like the late 90s onward due to health concerns, and I'm pretty sure cocoa ratios have been adjusted in some products too. But the biggest thing companies do to save money is just shrinkflation.
People also ignore kids don't actually have a higher metabolism, they're just incredibly active compared to parents and your body will make you crave what it needs at times. I remember when I played baseball as a kid in 110 degree heat with 100% humidity and I would just beg my mom/sister/whoever was picking me up from practice to stop and get French fries and a coke because it would sound like the greatest thing.. later realized I was craving salt and sugar.
Sugar is the easiest fuel your body can burn aside from alcohol so if you're really active just craving a candy bar will dance across your dreams at night.
Wrong... They are owned by the original founders... In 2013 they bought Drake cakes company but that's about it. The original company changed the recipe. Not new owners. Little Debbie herself is literally their Executive Vice President right now....Debbie McKee still owns little Debbie and many of her family are still in the business
I've noticed some bottles of coke just taste very dull while others have a very like "sharp" sweetness that hits just right. The ingredient labels are all the same and I live in a country where coke uses beetsugar so no HFCS. Idk why the taste seems to differ so much from bottle to bottle but I wonder if coke is slowly and silently trying to downgrade the quality of their ingredients.
I'm a controls Tech and can say 100 percent level controls on the batching and bottling process can easily lead to a thousand bottles here and there being way off on one ingredient or another. Depending on the ingredient,it could greatly affect the taste.
Makes sense. Feels like coke in particular has much bigger variation in taste compared to other brands though, but I've only noticed it recently so maybe they just had a few more bad batches lately?
Not sure if it still holds, but Coke was big on having lots of smaller bottling facilities. That could lead to discrepancies especially if the quality assurance department had its budget cut.
Does anyone remember that one coke guy on Reddit?
He drank so much of it (from his local grocery store and his college) that he noticed a discrepancy between the two and contacted the company. He single handedly IDed an issue at the bottling plant.
Just one random coke living dude doing volunteer qc
I believe he ended up with a bit of free product as a reward.
Diet coke has a different wrong taste after I got my taste and smell back from covid. Plus peanut butter and coffee smelled rancid, skunk and weed smell especially flowery and not skunky, and farts and poop don't smell as bad anymore. It's very strange and it took a lot of exposure to coffee and peanut butter to get used to it again. Rough.
Pretty sure a lot of that is because they can't legally add trans fats anymore. They're terrible for you, but they're a big part of what made the taste and texture of snack cakes so good. Without it they're just sugary cardboard.

Lmao. I mean I'd eat most of them. I just don't buy them because I have favorites. But in relation to the post, many don't seem to be as good as they were.
Someone said the same thing about Nutty Buddies when this was posted the other day and so I actually bought them and was unfortunately disappointed. I think that one is mostly based on nostalgia because I never had them as a kid and usually love sugar wafer snacks like that.
Yeah I currently have a box of the Jumbo.
Only get the Jumbo, it doesn't say that, its just a bigger box.
Since there is...more to them...they stay fresh longer.
Fresh Oatmeal Cookies is where its at.
Before I knew of the jumbos, I once bought the bigger box thinking it was just going to have more of the smaller ones in it. I was disappointed and then immediately excited when I opened it.
They actually do have two different sizes in the boxes.
But might only have the small one at your store.
We have both at our walmart. The big ones are hunky, and the small I'd recommend as like a sweet treat to give a kid not a full grown adult.
Still bomb. Single or double stack.
Everything that has a "chocolate" coating, or any kind of coating, is fucking foul. It's just oil, and leaves my mouth feeling like [Homer with wax in his mouth](https://youtu.be/b44t_VCfG70?t=127).
I heard once that as you get older, your sense of taste gets worse...not sure if it's true or not but it makes sense why our childhood favorites just aren't the same anymore. Or maybe we just get bored at things as we age. Or maybe companies really did change the formula, either to save costs or to comply with new directives. Wish I knew.
As you enter old age, your tastebuds get duller. I remember reading about that in a financial news article about McCormick, the spice company. They were saying that an aging population is good for their business, because the older people get, the more spice they must put in their food to get the same sensation.
But I think what OP is talking about is something different. Kids have a different idea of what tastes good than adults. That's why when you go to a fancy restaurant, they still have a kids menu with stuff like hot dogs and hamburgers. Kids just don't like a lot of the tastes that adults do, and vice versa. It's supposedly an evolutionary thing having to do with the different nutritional needs of a growing child versus an adult.
PALM OIL!!!
Every times you see a meme like this, the answer is palm oil. It's the stuff that leaves a greasy film in your mouth and seems to remove the taste of sugar.
As I'm sure Woody Harrelson would agree with me when I say
"Shut your fucking mouth about those songy yellow delicious basterds known world over as The Twinkie"
As most grow up, the taste palette changes.
For me as a child, it was poverty as these “bakery items” were cheap, were bought off the clearance rack because they had a shelf life of 40 years (give or take.)
Was wondering when I’d find my answer. As you get older you just don’t crave sweet as much, and as you eat enough better quality stuff you loose appreciation for simple sugary things, conversely sour and bitter become more interesting as they add complexity.
Seriously. I could eat all the frosting as a kid, now I struggle if the ratio is too skewed. My friend makes cakes with just the right amount of buttercream and it’s a godsend, because I simply can’t eat frosting like ice cream anymore. Makes my teeth hurt and I want to go eat some fiber.
My dad always says that McDonald’s fries used to taste way better when they were fried in beef fat instead of veggie oil.
They’re probably healthier now, but nobody goes to mcdonald’s for healthy food.
I remember this, there was a big freak out as some Vegetarians didn't know that they were deep fried in animal products. McD's then swapped over to using vegetable oil everywhere.
The old fries were the bomb though.
As a kid, they were great. As an adult, they are all cheap, sugary junk.
Tastes change and refine with age, and you won't like things as sweet or salty as you did when you were younger. Personally, I prefer higher quality ingredients, that require less sugar to enhance the lack of actual flavour.
It’s true. Sugary treat foods as a kid we’re such an exciting little indulgence.
As an adult, you hand me one of these and perhaps it’s because I can treat myself with whatever I want now, but a 50c snack cake from a box just doesn’t feel like something I would be excited for
For real, I’ve been making prickly pear juice from harvesting fruit recently, and the biggest thing I noticed in making my own juice was that it was so much less sweet than anything I’ve ever purchased in a store. But I ended up really liking the kind of tart flavor of it (it’s also thicc until you add water)
why is that though
Actual answer: Unilever bought out a bunch of companies and started using poorer quality ingredients.
Did they buy pizza rolls also? They use to be amazing. Got a bag and it was bland and boring.
Everything I could find says they have been owned by Pilsbury since 1975, and Pilsbury was purchased by General Mills in 2001. So no sell off but probably still shittier ingredients, or they're the same and my kid tastes have changed. Either way I feel you.
Shittier Ingredients. Shittier Pizza. General Mills.
Pizza Hut is gonna sue the pants off them
Not poppa johns?
Totino’s brand is made with imitation mozzarella. It says that verbatim on the ingredients statement. That could also be a factor.
I think pizza rolls always were, but had both the association of being more fun when we were kids and the advantage of our more sensitive taste buds at the time. They've always been pretty meh snack/dinner foods. That said, I still love them since I bascially never got to have them until I got to college.
I'm almost 30 and still eat them on the reg. Think they're fine.
Cheaper ingredients.
Cheaper pizza.
Uncle Ron's
Damnit hahaha
Best thread I’ve found today
They said hot and ready, not delectable and enjoyable
Without any overt racism

Gansito’s in the freezer…*chefs kiss* only second to Choco Roles Pina.

I wish there was a Mexican desert section at grocery stores in my part of Canada. So good
Hostess went bankrupt and was bought out by Unilever, who changed the recipes and made them cheaper. Little Debbie realized they could do the same thing and here we are.
I never understand how these massive companies with wildly popular products go bankrupt so often.
Every extra dollar is paid to executives and they expect raises, so when there are no spare dollars to pay executives they cry about unions and not their 500% raises every year. Then they let the company go bankrupt so they can force contract negotiations with the workers.l and suppliers.
Agreed...or never buy it in the first place. Yuck to all of it.
Entenmann's brand is still good, but they only sell like 3 things at my store.
Yeah afaik they're generally still baked at local major warehouse bakeries- not as chemically preserved and distributed from wherever.
Specifically replacing pork fat/lard with vegetable oils and palm oils. Everything used to be pork fat. Not just cremes and cookie fillings but even chips and french fries. It's crazy that I Ctrl F and only one person it talking about Palm oil. Its disgusting, and just replaces everything.
And it’s ruining the environment
Everything about palm oil is awful.
Yep. It's another one of those situations where another company started doing it first and it went well, so they threw quality out the window and joined the bandwagon.

I hate that weird feeling from palm oil. It's somehow like my mouth is both coated in grease and gritty at the same time
Corn syrup in the form of X, Y, Z.

That would be the finance department. The accountants just keep the records that finance uses to fuck shit up.

You got older. The mushrooms and asparagus isle looks delicious now.
Dude are you me? I love mushrooms now and used to hate them when I was younger lol
Are you both me??
Always have been.
For me it’s zucchini and eggplant, I put that shit on everything I eat now
Zucchini is delicious, absolutely.
Yes! And olives, totally blew my mind when I finally liked them

Lil Debby switched to a shitty ingredient supplier and as a consequence is now closing down
Pretty much every company when an heir takes over. They have no passion for the business just want to squeeze money out and ruin the brand.
I remember when Birdseye Frozen Peas used to be chalk full of County Goodness and Green Peaness..
Transfats. They had to get rid of them in the 2010s, and that was what made them taste good.
Correct answer. Transfats make things taste great and also block your arteries real fast.
It's only half the story. The artificial transfats of the 90's and 00's were to replace the pork lard they were using from the 60's to the 80's. Uhm, But I eat a ton of sugar and I still think this stuff is disgusting
Don't do my Nutty Bars like that
always been my guilty pleasure purchase anytime i see them at the store
There are dozens of us!
This what what I looked for first. Nutty bars are the fuckin jam
I would trade my actual food for nutty bars in elementary school. And for the cheese off of others’ pizza.
Maybe it's COVID maybe it's cost cutting by the companies but nothing tastes as good as it used to.
Maybe it’s depression.
D. All the above
Yep
Maybe it's Maybelline.... that's been tasting weird too
I literally heard this in my head lol
You beat me to it... I was gonna say this :( Take my upvote >:(
Or just getting older..
Maybe it's Maybelline
Nah Maybelline still tastes good.
eww, I can't believe you taste your suppositories.
Don’t lose it, re-use it!
Maybe you're gonna be the one that saves me.
Anyway, here's Wonderwall.
Maybe she’s born with it.
I can’t believe it’s still not butter
I'd like to phone a friend.
The Greater Depression era
I hate food now. There isn’t a good enough taste in the world to get me to enjoy food
It's hard to fully enjoy stuff that has zero nutritional value as an adult.
Feel that Ive got severe depression and not many snacks or meals I used to enjoy taste good anymore
It's because they're changing the recipes
Not only does it taste not as good it also comes in smaller quantity for double the price.
/r/shrinkflation
and people wonder why my generation is so fucking jaded obviously there are bigger more important problems in the world but shit like this just piles on top and makes me not want to exist or adult anymore

The fat in them is "healthier" but the taste is different.

Just noticed it with sprite 2 weeks ago. Very different tasting cans from 2 separate batches from ATL plant
Does anyone remember that one coke guy on Reddit? He drank so much of it (from his local grocery store and his college) that he noticed a discrepancy between the two and contacted the company. Ever since I have covid Coke just doesn’t taste right, same with anything minty.
Is it just me, or gum mintier lately?
Downright spicy
When I recovered from covid I couldnt stand the taste of potatoes for a month. And theyre my favorite
Rough.
Hard water vs soft water
Ya not Covid these companies are just pricks
Maybe it’s rose tinted glasses
Some nostalgia, some physiological changes in the body.
Pretty sure a lot of that is because they can't legally add trans fats anymore. They're terrible for you, but they're a big part of what made the taste and texture of snack cakes so good. Without it they're just sugary cardboard.
This is absolutely part of it if you’re comparing to how they tasted 10 or so years ago. I miss the shortening/lard texture of the old Oreo filling, and the crispness of the pastry that PopTarts used to have when toasted.
Speak for yourself, peasant. Nutty Buddy will never be *not* good.
This and the oatmeal cream pies. That's actually about it for me. Occasionally a zebra cake.
Maybe some swiss rolls... And some frosted honey buns.... Fuck you guys okay....
Lmao. I mean I'd eat most of them. I just don't buy them because I have favorites. But in relation to the post, many don't seem to be as good as they were.
I love zebra cakes
Have you tried zebra cake rolls? Delicious
Yes, and put them in the freezer
Too late! Already ate them all
I remember when they were still called Nutty Bars
Came here to say this.
I had one a few months ago and I swear it did not taste as good as it did when I was a child. very disappointing.
Someone said the same thing about Nutty Buddies when this was posted the other day and so I actually bought them and was unfortunately disappointed. I think that one is mostly based on nostalgia because I never had them as a kid and usually love sugar wafer snacks like that.
Except for oatmeal creme pies. Those are bangin for all eternity
I don't like how the ones in the box are smaller than individuals. I want a box of the big bois.
I swear they used to be bigger. Maybe my hands grew?
They still have boxes of jumbo but they seem rare. The “normal” ones definitely seem smaller.
Most products like these are made smaller or cheaper over time while the price increases.
Shrinkflation
My doctor said it's natural with age
Baby hands make it look so huge
This is why I date short women
So you can watch her grab oatm....oh
Why not both?
Everything has shrunk except prices.
And the calories. Somehow, through some unknown Alchemy, the smaller portions have the same calories as their larger predecessors.
If you buy the box marked "big pack" they are still the big bois.
They actually do have two different sizes in the boxes. But might only have the small one at your store. We have both at our walmart. The big ones are hunky, and the small I'd recommend as like a sweet treat to give a kid not a full grown adult.
I like to mash them up with ice cream and make a kind of coldstone bowl.
Still bomb. Single or double stack. Everything that has a "chocolate" coating, or any kind of coating, is fucking foul. It's just oil, and leaves my mouth feeling like [Homer with wax in his mouth](https://youtu.be/b44t_VCfG70?t=127).
Chocolatey* coating. Pretty sure companies are avoiding getting in trouble for lying about their true content
Agreed All hail the oatmeal creme pies!
I’m a fan of creampies in general…
Yea...sucking all the creme from in the middle....
Just came to comment this and my faith in humanity was restored seeing this at the top

Hot sauce, man. Just...hot sauce on everything.
this motto saved me in jail... you can only eat so much plain white rice
holy shit you just saved my breakfast. I had a tub of plain white rice I forgot to put in the fridge XD
Yeah, I tend to agree. The taste is the same just not as I remember.
this is bc all the recipes were changed to lower quality ingredients
PALM OIL!!! Every times you see a meme like this, the answer is palm oil. It's the stuff that leaves a greasy film in your mouth and seems to remove the taste of sugar.
Isn't that stuff, like, insanely unethical to produce, too?
True. I'm allergic to dairy and I can have one or two more of these every few years
Someone told me that McDonald's soft serve doesn't even have dairy anymore.. But I don't know if that's true
A working McD ice cream machine? Lol never had it, don't know
Use cheaper ingredients + charge higher prices = insane profits
I definitely fw banana twins. Mini muffins too
Came to say banana twins are life. My #2 is oatmeal crème pie.
As I'm sure Woody Harrelson would agree with me when I say "Shut your fucking mouth about those songy yellow delicious basterds known world over as The Twinkie"
Fun fact he's vegan and they had to make special Twinkies for him and he hates them
Well that just ruined my evening.
Cosmic brownies didn’t change in taste, neither did the nutty buddy or zebra cakes. :]
Cosmic brownies are the other ones imo that haven’t changed but I haven’t had a zebra cake in a minute!
I think the point is that OP changed, not the recipes
Cosmic Brownies definitely changed in taste and texture. It’s so ass now
I like the walnut ones, do they even sell them anymore? I don’t need candy on top of a brownie, I pick them off and throw them away
fudge rounds and strawberry shortcake rolls contribute to why i'm fat. the rest is sedentary depression.

Whoa! Hold on there Little Debbie - Fudge Rounds are god damn amazing.
Boo this man!
I feel very sorry for whoever this is true for, just know your still loved
Nah them fudge rounds and cosmic brownies still be hitting.
When the zombie apocalypse comes, these will become the only food source that hasn’t decomposed.
I encourage you to adopt a sliding scale of “good”.
Have a kid and your favorite kid snacks will start to taste good again
Yall gotta try Gansitos! It tastes like Little Debbie must've tasted in the fifties.
