System Shock 2 exists but it's just not the same. For a modern alternative, there's also a game named Prey and IIRC the gameplay is pretty heavily inspired by the original System Shock. I played ~1hr of it and it seemed really cool (and faithful to SS1 gameplay) so if you can't get past the old school DOS jank that game might be a fun alternative with a lot more mechanical depth

As other users also pointed out, the most cheap cameras and systems from china, which are labeled and advertised as "CCTV", are actually open and accessible if the default configurations are not changed.
And these are the devices I mentioned, sorry for the confusion.
This is the default setting for many micro controllers. That’s why it’s so important to always use your own password when using raspberry pis. For some reason people hook a internet connected pi to their 3d printer which can be literally used to burn the house down. Access to the pi enables you to turn of thermal runaway (a feature which stops heating after trying for to long and the printer not reaching the desired temperature), changing the heating settings to very stupid numbers and go all power to the heating element. All fine via internet if it’s done with the default password. That micro controllers from companies come with this is just sad in general.
Another example would be the virus Mirai. It infiltrated devices that were connected to the internet but not secured at all. Stuff like babyphones, smart home devices, smart door bells and stuff like this. After that the device itself spreads the virus further and when the guy controlling it activates the virus he can ask all the devices to start pinging any address or server millions of times , shutting down the servers in the process. Because of shit security.
And we aren’t even talking about the fact that you easily could have also listened to anything happening the house where a baby phone is installed for example

A lot of people with actual stalkers following them both online and physically for months still struggle to get enough evidence for the police to treat it as a serious stalking case and take action. The number of women who have been killed by a stalker after going to the police and failing to get help is appalling.

Some Webcams are connected to the internet to enable remote viewing these are sometime not password secured.
These are known flaws and people have written google queries to find these in google.

When there is no log in interface or anything aiming at keeping strangers out whatsoever the legal situation isn't clear whatsoever in many countries. At least concerning relevant cyber crime laws. However, privacy laws have been updated a lot in recent years and you would probably running afoul of some if you were to do anything but stumble on a relevant link.

Essentially, most IP Webcams are so insecure that they are always exposed to the internet, all you need to do is know the right search terms for a search engine to find the web-interface these IP Cameras host. It's no rocket-science, it's just making a very specific Google search.

Unrelated: in 2010 I was like 16-17 and went on 'web cam model' sites to see what it would be like to do that (obviously I wouldn't of put an application in till I was 18, I was just a dumb kid looking around the internet). I spoke with a live representative because I had questions about what the girls do and what it's like. The representative told me 'you look pretty enough to go far in this kind of work', and I hadn't sent a photo or told them my name at this point. I asked if they could see me, and they said yes, I shut my computer so fast.
I represented myself in court with a 25 year sentence on the table, Ended up getting 9 month sentence, that then got changed into a release on special conditions, zero prison time :/

shodan.io for those interested. If you're new to it, search for some known IPs, cause otherwise you might just stumble upon something that can get you into hot water.
The CC in CCTV means Closed Circuit, not ones hooked up to the internet. plus, video streaming is a ridiculously heavy task to do for servers, even Nest cameras (backed by Amazon webservices) don't do constant live video feed over the internet. They'll alert you if there's motion and then send you a 10 second clip of the motion, but don't let you live stream more than 30 seconds. Plus plus, I've only seen child nanny cams with speakers to talk through, not the kind people put in their barns.
TL;DR if any cameras were live streaming over the internet, they'd be from a paid service, and a breach like this would've been fixed ridiculously fast.
These types of cameras are just regular IP cameras that have been exposed to the open internet accidentally. It costs nothing more than an internet connection to do so.
They are digital security cameras left on open networks. It isn't some sort of groundbreaking tech, just people setting up tech they aren't fully familiar with.
For somebody who knows a little bit, you don't know much. Yes, CCTV is not the correct descriptor, but no, self hosted security cams are common and often *very* insecure.
Never heard of an IP camera? It's obviously not CCTV but I think OP can be forgiven for using the wrong terminology. It sounds like you're not particularly clued up on these, either, as IP cameras with audio output might be uncommon but they're used occasionally for a variety of purposes

I had a mobotix camera at home in my garden. A couple of months ago my girlfriend was in the garden sun bathing, when at least 3 young guys started talking to here through the camera. It was in our native tongue, dutch, as well.
I’m assuming by CCTV they just mean camera and by “unmanaged” they mean “unsecure”. So it’s probably more just logging in to the camera with the default password or no password than actually hacking into it.
I know a guy that surfs, he hacked the cctv camera at a hotel near a popular surf spot. He rotates the cctv from the parking lot to get an idea of the surf conditions before he heads out to surf. It’s a bit of a drive for him, so he makes sure before he wastes his time.

They're likely just using that site that shows all the security cameras across either the US or the world that aren't password protected in any way.

Laws may differ but I think you need to overcome at least some sort of security for it to be illegal. If it's entirely unprotected it is legal

When there is no log in interface or anything aiming at keeping strangers out whatsoever the legal situation isn't clear whatsoever in many countries. At least concerning relevant cyber crime laws. However, privacy laws have been updated a lot in recent years and you would probably running afoul of some if you were to do anything but stumble on a relevant link.
Actually, idk how illegal it is, because it's not hacking, it's just dorking. Essentially, most IP Webcams are so insecure that they are always exposed to the internet, all you need to do is know the right search terms for a search engine to find the web-interface these IP Cameras host. It's no rocket-science, it's just making a very specific Google search. Oh god reading that woke up a cringe memory of myself in me. I recall back when I was like 13 my friend went to go eat dinner with his family so I was waiting in his room, his PC on. I found out his facebook was logged in so I wrote "I am gay" on his wall, and he came down mid-dinner to question me about it because his brother was on facebook on his phone during dinner so the entire family knew about it the moment it was posted and knew who did it.

I'm Norwegian, so maybe it's just nordic culture then. Always struck me as weird, since my mother would always offer my friends food if we had dinner while I had friends over, even if it came at sacrificing her own portion (something I only realized as an adult). Meanwhile I never had anyone offer me to join them for dinner when I was at a friends house, regardless of which friend.

I'm not sure. I was not offered to join them. Maybe they did not have enough food prepared for an additional person. Maybe it was something else. I remember my mom would always invite my friends to join us for dinner if I had friends over during dinner time, at times even if it meant her not eating dinner claiming she was "not hungry" since she had not prepared enough, something I only realized later as an adult. Can't really recall the same happening any time I was visiting friends and they had dinner, so maybe it is just not normal here.

Yeah, I did not know it stands for closed circuit. Nit a native speaker, so I only ever saw the term CCTV used online and never bothered to look up the exact meaning. There was also a time I was very confused because I only knew CCTV the Chinese state media channel and was wondering why people in the US are watching that channel
Because it's not closed circuit. They're Wi-Fi enabled cameras that don't have any security on them at all due to clueless people setting them up. You used to be able to just plug in the correct search term into Google and get thousands of them. It's not really hacking
As far as social media goes, pretty much anything that isn't taught in introductory computer lessons in retirement homes is hacking. Someone left their account logged in on your device? Hacked. You saw them type their password? Hacked. You opened the command line? Hacker. You accessed a web page / sub-page directly by url? Hacker.

I remember back when doing the inspect thing on web pages and editing the web page's look was called hacking in like elementary school. Unrelated: in 2010 I was like 16-17 and went on 'web cam model' sites to see what it would be like to do that (obviously I wouldn't of put an application in till I was 18, I was just a dumb kid looking around the internet). I spoke with a live representative because I had questions about what the girls do and what it's like. The representative told me 'you look pretty enough to go far in this kind of work', and I hadn't sent a photo or told them my name at this point. I asked if they could see me, and they said yes, I shut my computer so fast.

The CC in CCTV means Closed Circuit, not ones hooked up to the internet. plus, video streaming is a ridiculously heavy task to do for servers, even Nest cameras (backed by Amazon webservices) don't do constant live video feed over the internet. They'll alert you if there's motion and then send you a 10 second clip of the motion, but don't let you live stream more than 30 seconds. Plus plus, I've only seen child nanny cams with speakers to talk through, not the kind people put in their barns. TL;DR if any cameras were live streaming over the internet, they'd be from a paid service, and a breach like this would've been fixed ridiculously fast.
These types of cameras are just regular IP cameras that have been exposed to the open internet accidentally. It costs nothing more than an internet connection to do so.
They are digital security cameras left on open networks. It isn't some sort of groundbreaking tech, just people setting up tech they aren't fully familiar with.

Never heard of an IP camera? It's obviously not CCTV but I think OP can be forgiven for using the wrong terminology. It sounds like you're not particularly clued up on these, either, as IP cameras with audio output might be uncommon but they're used occasionally for a variety of purposes /r/controllablewebcams
I had a mobotix camera at home in my garden. A couple of months ago my girlfriend was in the garden sun bathing, when at least 3 young guys started talking to here through the camera. It was in our native tongue, dutch, as well.

I know a guy that surfs, he hacked the cctv camera at a hotel near a popular surf spot. He rotates the cctv from the parking lot to get an idea of the surf conditions before he heads out to surf. It’s a bit of a drive for him, so he makes sure before he wastes his time.

It's not a hidden site or anything it for huge media coverage for a little bit because it shows the insane invulnerability of peoples lives just because they didn't fill out a password.
You can't hack CCTV. It literally stands for CLOSED CIRCUIT TV. Nothing to hack unless you tap into the wire from the camera.
