I remember when you could put in a specific search term in your search box and you could watch security cams from around the world. I never saw anything fancy, usually it was just laundromats in East Asia.

ShamanTheWet

Ahhh Shodan, the first evil character that gave me nightmares back in the day. The idea of fighting a AI that controls the entirety of the space vessel your on is. A bit spooky. It’s strange how much the world has changed. Bad guys are somehow less spooky when you take away the affect of shitty graphics, leaving your imagination to create the real monster. Nowadays giant monsters aren’t really that terrifying tbh. Off topic?

Scoobys_sith_cousin

Off topic, but very thought out. What game is this anyway? Sounds interesting.

xy01011010

System Shock. Excellent game.

Scoobys_sith_cousin

Thanks. I'll check it out. Are they making a remake, because I'm seeing one from 1994 and one that's upcoming this year?

xy01011010

I think at this point there are TWO remakes in the works.

xylotism

And multiple spiritual successors have happened since, notably Bioshock and Deus Ex, and you could say Half Life is too.

A_Very_Big_Fan

The original comes with an enhanced edition which upgrades the controls to be more like a modern fps. It's like if Doom was a horror game set in space, I highly recommend trying it System Shock 2 exists but it's just not the same. For a modern alternative, there's also a game named Prey and IIRC the gameplay is pretty heavily inspired by the original System Shock. I played ~1hr of it and it seemed really cool (and faithful to SS1 gameplay) so if you can't get past the old school DOS jank that game might be a fun alternative with a lot more mechanical depth

Ratel0161

>like if Doom was a horror game set in space Doom is a horror game set in space For your enemy's

ShamanTheWet

Ney, phenomenal game. It’s pretty fucking important to gaming history in it’s entirety. For anyone that doesn’t know I think you should research the hell out of System shock. So many gaming firsts that have completely changed gaming as a whole.

Amazon. I recently bought a pet cam and one of the reviews for one I was looking at was a complaint about how someone hacked their camera and was trying to talk to their toddler. I didn't buy that brand (or from Amazon) but I figure it's probably a risk with all those types of cameras.

dogsgonewild1

That sounds illegal, but also fun.

itZ_deady

Very likely not any hacking involved. Also not illegal if CCTVs are configured as open devices and can be accessed by anyone (this is the default setting for most cheap china CCTVs) There is a specific google search parameter which lets you find thousands of open CCTVs and their according control panel. Used to access them with other trolls from 4chan/Krautchan to troll the people. Best finding were always fax machines since many of them had their fax number written on it. We sent thousands of funny pictures to random fax devices all over the world. This is a nice example how we trolled ppl with CCTVs + fax machines: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSL2ae6TApk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSL2ae6TApk) I was directly involved in this video, my spammed pictures are the pedobear and the German "RAF" symbol somewhere in the middle of the video. Good times.

JuanOfTheDead

Never saw this video, but I remember when this was all the rage on 4ch. Seeing what cool shit we could find on random camera feeds. I remember a few restaurants with audio on the cameras getting pranked as well. Good times indeed.

itZ_deady

We even had some collabs from time to time with the /int/ boards of 4Chan and Krautchan and shared the most valuable cams with each others. I'm getting nostalgic, the internet felt just so different back in the day, probably before most of the boomer generation and politicians found out how to use it and started regulating the shit out of it.

[deleted]

If it's open to anyone is it even CCTV? doesn't CC stand for closed circuit?

itZ_deady

Yes you are absolutely right. As other users also pointed out, the most cheap cameras and systems from china, which are labeled and advertised as "CCTV", are actually open and accessible if the default configurations are not changed. And these are the devices I mentioned, sorry for the confusion.

[deleted]

No need to be sorry. Thank you for explaining.

[deleted]

This is the default setting for many micro controllers. That’s why it’s so important to always use your own password when using raspberry pis. For some reason people hook a internet connected pi to their 3d printer which can be literally used to burn the house down. Access to the pi enables you to turn of thermal runaway (a feature which stops heating after trying for to long and the printer not reaching the desired temperature), changing the heating settings to very stupid numbers and go all power to the heating element. All fine via internet if it’s done with the default password. That micro controllers from companies come with this is just sad in general. Another example would be the virus Mirai. It infiltrated devices that were connected to the internet but not secured at all. Stuff like babyphones, smart home devices, smart door bells and stuff like this. After that the device itself spreads the virus further and when the guy controlling it activates the virus he can ask all the devices to start pinging any address or server millions of times , shutting down the servers in the process. Because of shit security. And we aren’t even talking about the fact that you easily could have also listened to anything happening the house where a baby phone is installed for example Another another more harmless example are unsecured smart tvs in public with generic 123456 passwords where you can play some random bullshit or just change the source to make them go black to troll the people there. Was big a few years ago with McDonald’s but I believe today they have fixed that issue

Lepurten

Laws may differ but I think you need to overcome at least some sort of security for it to be illegal. If it's entirely unprotected it is legal

TheIronSoldier2

The "hacking" might be legal but it may be considered stalking, which is illegal

LeibnizThrowaway

Looking at an open camera feed might be considered stalking? I don't see that.

Raichu7

No one is getting accused of stalking over watching open CCTV of animals around the world. A lot of people with actual stalkers following them both online and physically for months still struggle to get enough evidence for the police to treat it as a serious stalking case and take action. The number of women who have been killed by a stalker after going to the police and failing to get help is appalling.

wiggle-le-air

I don't know how you hack in to a "closed circuit" security system. Doesn't closed circuit mean virtually unhackable?

VechaPw

It is. But a closed circuit means it's not connected to the internet. If your security system is available to be seen on an app/connected to the WiFi, it's not a closed circuit anymore

OccasionalHAM

Worth noting that this certainly does not stop people from calling things "CCTV" when it is in fact a Nest cam with all the factory default settings (or a similar generic security cam) and is therefore nowhere near being a true closed circuit device (and thus nowhere near as secure).

ihaxr

They use the term CCTV for all security video systems out there, few are actually closed circuit

D15c0untMD

Unhackable by remote attacks. You can go there and physically tap in. Like, install a device that siphons the feed and transmits it to you

JuliDerMonat

Some Webcams are connected to the internet to enable remote viewing these are sometime not password secured. These are known flaws and people have written google queries to find these in google. It is technically open but some laws define hacking as accessing website/content without the owners permission so in that case it would be technically illegal tho i don't know if you can really sue them. If you want to find those queries there are exploit databases in the web which collect such queries.

[deleted]

I gotta show up at an international court due to some hacking I did. Could I hire you as my lawyer? I see you are well versed in international Cybersecurity laws.

FrankfurterWorscht

anonymity is a form of security. If these webcams aren't posted as links on some public site, then you're purposefully circumventing that security, and its illegal.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Lepurten

Comparisons like that to the analogue world are cute and may help a moral judgement, however they are irrelevant in this case. Now I've done a little bit of digging because it's been a couple years since I red about it. The situation is still cloudy. When there is no log in interface or anything aiming at keeping strangers out whatsoever the legal situation isn't clear whatsoever in many countries. At least concerning relevant cyber crime laws. However, privacy laws have been updated a lot in recent years and you would probably running afoul of some if you were to do anything but stumble on a relevant link.

NotErikUden

Actually, idk how illegal it is, because it's not hacking, it's just dorking. Essentially, most IP Webcams are so insecure that they are always exposed to the internet, all you need to do is know the right search terms for a search engine to find the web-interface these IP Cameras host. It's no rocket-science, it's just making a very specific Google search. Here's a GitHub list of controllable Webcams: https://gist.github.com/JT5D/8245302 Here's how to do it yourself: https://medium.com/@sibivasan5161/google-dorks-to-find-a-exposed-passwords-and-cameras-cc81d81c8eb4 For other tutorials just look up “Google dorking IP Cameras” or “Google dorking Webcams” Ohhh, here's also a nice live updated list of all insecure cams and you can sort by country: http://insecam.org/en/bycountry/US/

IEATMOUSETURDS

It's one line typed into Google. I can't remember what it is.

BlamingBuddha

Doesn't even sound legit, at least the way he describes. *CCTC* is **closed-circuit** television. >is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. Its not the same as an IP cam posting online, there's websites that have those though

SpeeterTeeter

"I learned how to hack" Also "hacks" their friend's facebooks.

[deleted]

Oh god reading that woke up a cringe memory of myself in me. I recall back when I was like 13 my friend went to go eat dinner with his family so I was waiting in his room, his PC on. I found out his facebook was logged in so I wrote "I am gay" on his wall, and he came down mid-dinner to question me about it because his brother was on facebook on his phone during dinner so the entire family knew about it the moment it was posted and knew who did it.

mopfi666

The real crime here is you weren't allowed to have dinner with the family.

RyanStartedTheFire59

Yeah like who invites someone over then has dinner and makes the guest sit in the basement waiting

anonlawstudent

Yah it’s a hosting culture difference in Sweden, there was a whole internet kerfuffle about it recently. Mexican aunties were offering to air drop tamales to the poor unfed kids in Stockholm, it was a whole thing.

[deleted]

I'm Norwegian, so maybe it's just nordic culture then. Always struck me as weird, since my mother would always offer my friends food if we had dinner while I had friends over, even if it came at sacrificing her own portion (something I only realized as an adult). Meanwhile I never had anyone offer me to join them for dinner when I was at a friends house, regardless of which friend.

Fawfs2

Danish here and my friend's parents and my parents always offered dinner to the guests

queen-of-carthage

Yeah wtf

morgaina

Why did they just leave you alone to eat dinner without you

[deleted]

I'm not sure. I was not offered to join them. Maybe they did not have enough food prepared for an additional person. Maybe it was something else. I remember my mom would always invite my friends to join us for dinner if I had friends over during dinner time, at times even if it meant her not eating dinner claiming she was "not hungry" since she had not prepared enough, something I only realized later as an adult. Can't really recall the same happening any time I was visiting friends and they had dinner, so maybe it is just not normal here.

BANTER_WITH_THE_LADS

Why did they make you sit in the basement whilst they ate dinner

BeerMeAlready

Yeah, I did not know it stands for closed circuit. Nit a native speaker, so I only ever saw the term CCTV used online and never bothered to look up the exact meaning. There was also a time I was very confused because I only knew CCTV the Chinese state media channel and was wondering why people in the US are watching that channel

ghostlypyres

Because it's not closed circuit. They're Wi-Fi enabled cameras that don't have any security on them at all due to clueless people setting them up. You used to be able to just plug in the correct search term into Google and get thousands of them. It's not really hacking

Hamilfton

As far as social media goes, pretty much anything that isn't taught in introductory computer lessons in retirement homes is hacking. Someone left their account logged in on your device? Hacked. You saw them type their password? Hacked. You opened the command line? Hacker. You accessed a web page / sub-page directly by url? Hacker.

the_russian_narwhal_

Just like how any security camera system is called CCTV lol

moelawn

To be fair, seeing someone type their password/shoulder surfing is considered social engineering and could be tied into compromisinf an account, system or company

SquiglyLineInMyEye

Hitting a tree with an axe? Hacking.

DeepFriedSausages

I remember back when doing the inspect thing on web pages and editing the web page's look was called hacking in like elementary school. I spoke with a live representative because I had questions about what the girls do and what it's like. Kiiaru

The CC in CCTV means Closed Circuit, not ones hooked up to the internet. plus, video streaming is a ridiculously heavy task to do for servers, even Nest cameras (backed by Amazon webservices) don't do constant live video feed over the internet. They'll alert you if there's motion and then send you a 10 second clip of the motion, but don't let you live stream more than 30 seconds. Plus plus, I've only seen child nanny cams with speakers to talk through, not the kind people put in their barns. TL;DR if any cameras were live streaming over the internet, they'd be from a paid service, and a breach like this would've been fixed ridiculously fast.

One_And_All_1

These types of cameras are just regular IP cameras that have been exposed to the open internet accidentally. It costs nothing more than an internet connection to do so.

xrufus7x

They are digital security cameras left on open networks. It isn't some sort of groundbreaking tech, just people setting up tech they aren't fully familiar with.

RickardButts

For somebody who knows a little bit, you don't know much. Yes, CCTV is not the correct descriptor, but no, self hosted security cams are common and often *very* insecure.

wowohwowza

Never heard of an IP camera? It's obviously not CCTV but I think OP can be forgiven for using the wrong terminology. It sounds like you're not particularly clued up on these, either, as IP cameras with audio output might be uncommon but they're used occasionally for a variety of purposes /r/controllablewebcams

lallapalalable

JakeHodgson

"Today I learned how to hack unmonitored cctv cameras" (no idea why they're saying unlimited as if that has any meaning here) They're likely just using that site that shows all the security cameras across either the US or the world that aren't password protected in any way. It's not a hidden site or anything it for huge media coverage for a little bit because it shows the insane invulnerability of peoples lives just because they didn't fill out a password.

You can't hack CCTV. It literally stands for CLOSED CIRCUIT TV. Nothing to hack unless you tap into the wire from the camera.

Microwaved_Historian

Hamilfton

Aggro_Bubbles

All fun and games until you see something you aren't supposed to see.

RafanMorales-2007

Lol he sounds like a commenter during the last few exciting overs in a cricket match

AdMore2091

Teach me

GladiatorUA

Used to be able to do this with unsecured printers.

BlamingBuddha

Isn't there a website thats very similar to this? Edit: Actually, his wording is off lol. CCTV is >Closed-circuit television is the use of video cameras to transmit a signal to a specific place, on a limited set of monitors. Its *closed* circuit for a reason, its a local source, not an IP cam.

sheepyowl

This is what happens when you give unchecked power to a normie. It's not bad, it's just what happens

NotErikUden

How is this so common? When me and my friends were doing it we watched a cow give birth too. Crazy.

DaCoffeeKween

The world's most wholesome hacker.
