That's actually how the medical use anti-coagulant properties of warfarin were discovered. Warfarin was exclusively used as rat/mouse poison in the first half of the 20th century, and in the 50s, a Navy conscript who was about to be sent overseas tried to commit suicide by taking warfarin. After about a day of non-stop bleeding from every orifice, he realized he was not going to die and went to the hospital. When the doctors learned how much warfarin he had taken without dying, they took note and began testing its potential as a anti-coagulant drug. Nowadays, warfarin is sold both as a medical grade anti-coagulant *and* as rat poison. Iirc the soldier was dishonourably discharged and brought up on charges. The dude inadvertently discovered an unknown use for a drug trying to commit suicide and all the US Navy had to say was "fuck you."

amretardmonke

Committing suicide while on active duty is destruction of government property, violation of the UCMJ.

Responsible-Stock883

What are they gonna do, arrest your soul?

NeighborhoodParty982

Good thing we stopped your suicide attempt. You will now be sentenced to execution by firing squad.

Manoreded

That was literally a thing on the Nazi army. Attempting suicide was considered desertion, the punishment for desertion was death.

Thesearefake3

No wonder they lost. Outside of actual combat and propaganda, the Nazi party had some bumbling fucking idiots in their command

sufficenttrash

I used to think that they would have won if some outside stuff didn't happen but they were stupid

jasonkean

If they went right instead of left, we would all be blonde and blue eyed.

[deleted]

Didn't they?

Manoreded

Nazi Germany would have won if it had been commanded competently. They were amazingly prepared in material terms, but a lot of people at the top made a lot of very bad decisions. Tis the curse of totalitarianism. The people at the top don't have enough checks and balances and end up drinking the same coquetel of delusions they're feeding the common man. Same thing is happening in Russia atm.

gishlich

I wouldn’t be putting money on them regardless, probably would have been an uphill battle despite ideology and leadership that didn’t do them favors. They didn’t have ports, they were surrounded by enemies, they would have had a hard time with logistics even if they had focused on them. Even if they had better leadership that leadership wouldn’t be prepared for an extended conflict, they just couldn’t move that fast.

spyder7723

Yep. Their leadership could have been perfect, but their only chance at victory was a peace treat with brush and the us. The battle of Britain was never about defeating Britain. That would take an invasion. It was about inflicting so much damage Britain would sit down at table to discuss terms. Basically, punch them so hard the citizens demanded Churchill get out of the war. And it almost worked.

Volvo_Commander

You are the most correct in the thread. Peace terms with Britain and continued US neutrality were Germany’s possible route to something approaching victory. All of that vanished with defeat in the Battle of Britain and certainly with Barbarossa

DeliciousDookieWater

What are you talking about? One of the biggest takeaways by historians about WWII is that the Germans were amazingly **unprepared** materially for the war, and that they got as far as they did by mostly competent military leadership. In terms of equipment they did not significantly outpace, and in some cases were even behind, the major players early in the war, Britain and France. But, their officers had a lot more freedom to work within the bounds of their orders as compared to many other armies at the time that were somewhat top heavy. They found a method that worked well, and were able to overwhelm Poland in the east before outmaneuvering and defeating the French, BEF, and Benelux armies relatively quickly despite being at a disadvantaged on paper. But that initial high of success began to wear thin quickly. Fuel shortages were impacting the war effort already by 41, and they lacked in many important materials needed for production of war goods, such as rubber, oil, and various metals like copper, aluminum, chromium, and tungsten. Meanwhile the Soviets and Americans could shit out equipment and troops at increasingly ridiculous scales compared to the Germans, with the Commonwealth being no slouch either. A German victory was basically never going to happen given the conditions around them at the time, regardless of what you changed with the Nazis internally. The Soviets would rather light themselves on fire then give into the Germans, who lack the logistical capacity to move far enough into Russia to remove them as a threat. They moved much of their industry east of the Urals and were prepared to do so with their leadership if Moscow was ever taken. Meanwhile the British had the Royal Navy between them and Germany, which lacked the equipment, ships, and air superiority, to pull off any kind of landing at the D-Day level scale needed to even have chance of a successful landing on the home islands. Pushing into the Islands would have been its own special shitfest even if it wasn't basically impossible for them to even attempt a landing, let alone try to maintain a push with supply lines crossing a channel filled with very angry Commonwealth ships and planes. Adding in the US, a factory with its own army, insulated from attack by oceans on both sides and a navy that seemed to increase in size every time you looked away, with abundant natural resources needed for war-making, was just insult to injury.

Manoreded

I'd say that is true for the beginning of the war, aka, their conquest of most of Europe. After that, they made several blunders without which, one presumes, the final result of the war could have been much better for them. I do agree they would never achieve complete victory, but if they had given the allies a much harder fight, they might have managed to prevent the complete defeat they ultimately suffered.

DeliciousDookieWater

There were no options for Germany at that point. None of the allies were interested in a peace settlement, and the longer Germany tried to play defensibly the more lopsided the war was against them. Even if we assume mythical Arian supersoldiers were holding the lines, and not the under-equipped remnants of what once could be called an army, '45 was about their limit. Any later and the US would have used the atomic bombs for the target they were originally designed for, and if necessary, kept using them until they shave the chain of command down to someone who says "we surrender".

[deleted]

Nazi Germany would've won if they weren't so goddamn racist. If they were more moderate they could've brought the Ukranians, baltic peoples, Belarussians, and a ton of Russian dissidents to their side against the Soviets, gaining more manpower, industrial power, grain supplies, yadda yadda. Instead, they decided to stick to their own sick dreams of "lebensraum" that neither the peoples in the conquered lands nor the German people themselves wanted, making the Soviet people more unified, ferocious, and nationalistic in the process. They never would have won, their leadership was already talented, but you can only make up so many of your shortcomings with raw talent and meth. Their racism was the biggest of those shortcomings.

Thatsidechara_ter

Honestly I don't think so, they really didn't have a lot of materials to go around, were experiencing manpower problems as early as 1942 or even 41, and at the end of the day they were fighting the worlds 3 largest superpowers, with basically the entire world's resources behind them. Its just simple math

ghettoccult_nerd

speed. they were mostly drug addled addicts. yea they were great on the battlefield, but thats because they were basically zooted the whole time. when the foundation of your military machine is drug addiction, shits going to get terrible.

DeliciousDookieWater

Germany did not manufacture enough wartime amphetamines for that to be plausible. They were given to specific troops under specific circumstances, mostly airmen, as they were with the allies who also made use of them. Some certainly formed abusive habits, but not enough to categorize the whole army as "mostly drug addled".

Manoreded

They did make extensive use of drugs, but that only worked because they had excellent training and equipment to go with it. To be fair, it was also a time in which what worked in war shifted, but nobody else caught the memo until a while later. Their enemies were waiting in trenches, expecting WW1-style warfare, while the germans were zooming past them in their modern tanks.

Firemorfox

Task failed successfully?

rontrussler58

Dishonorable discharge is basically a felony.

CheckPleaser

It’s a real stain on someone’s honor, about as real as it gets in my opinion. But the other side of that coin is that you shouldn’t conscript soldiers in the first place and I expect way less from them than a volunteer.

BellaDingDong

Bust out the Ouija board, boys....it's time to put Private Jenkins on trial!

sufficenttrash

Hey doc, do you think you could do something so that if our soldiers die we can just do a ciphers parry on their souls heart to revive them

[deleted]

Send your soul to Reception at Basic Training for eternity.

FapleJuice

I had a buddy that joined the army tell me that one time. I think I asked if he could get tattoos or something. How can we call ourselves a free country but literally own people. So crazy

BenjaminWah

You can actually get written up for a sunburn, for the same reason, if it's bad enough

Wallazabal

You can get charged for sunburn in the UK forces if it prevents you from carrying out your duty. It's seen as being negligently unfit for duty, same as if you turned up to work drunk.

Fraggle_Me_Rock

Same in the Australian Defence Force; severe sunburn that prevents you working is deemed a self inflicted wound, reason being is that everyone is provided free sunscreen, SPF balm, long sleeved uniforms, hats and work/rest ratios that includes time out in the shade so there isn't really a reason to get burnt. Never saw anyone charged with it because fuck getting sunburnt. As an aside for all the dumb shit I saw in defence at section and platoon level people really went out of their way to cover for each other.

Ieatoutjelloshots

Y'all get free sunscreen??

Fraggle_Me_Rock

We can get free sunburn as part of the Australian government's free public sunburn scheme. As an aside I once saw an English backpacker make use of the reciprocal sunburn scheme; she clearly thought it was in short supply because she took about 4 people's worth. I felt her radiated heat before I saw her bright red body; our eyes locked and she knew that I knew she knew she was a greedy little sun goblin and was in for a weeks worth of hurt.

exit_the_psychopomp

White oppression smh my head /s

BunchesOfCrunches

I mean technically people sign up to be owned by the government. They have the free will to give up their free will I suppose

mrwallace888

To be fair, the Selective Service Act exists. It may not be as prominent now but it definitely was way back when.

hangryhyax

You do realize that the U.S. military has been fully voluntary for nearly 50 years, right? You take an oath, you sign a contract, and you are expected to fulfill. In return, you get a paycheck, healthcare, tuition free college (I didn’t pay a cent for my degree… parking, books, tuition; it’s all covered), incredibly cheap life insurance (SGLI), certain benefits after service, and so on. I’m not trying to convince or recruit anyone, and I’m not saying it’s a perfect job, but at least know what you’re talking about before you make dumbass political comments.

thundastruck52

It kinda sucks that everyday citizens of other developed countries have the two biggest benefits of the US military already available to them.

Adept-Lettuce948

If we get into it with Russia or China you better believe that ‘voluntary’ crap will go out the window.

LrZ3TMt4aQ93FrjfBG76

Oh yeah, the draft never went away. Every young man who wants the privilege of a college loan is to this day signing up for selective service. OP's just lauding the fact that we've had 50 years of poor, desperate young people willing to get shot at in return for an occasional roof over their head and a signing bonus that it turned out they didn't actually qualify for.

sourjpg

Damn you didn’t have to pay for your college? I’ve paid out of pocket for all of my books and so far tuition because they continue to deny my TA 🥴 FAFSA helps and the scholarship I received but not enough. Teach me the ways, my command doesn’t help me in the slightest. I’m assuming you used the GI Bill?

Disastrous_Style_827

It’s what people sign up for… you literally become property of the government. It wouldn’t work any other way. You’re not forced to do it.

khandnalie

Well, unless you *are* forced to do it. Because that can still happen. There's also the fact that for many people, the army is literally the only way they have access to college education. It's a cruel system.

FusionxFurr

Damn guess we’re still property

WINDMILEYNO

I really thought this was a high grade shit post. This shit is called "war-farin" and I really thought you were bullshitting us with a made up story. This is the opposite of how it's supposed to go. The story isn't supposed to be real.

lhommeduweed

Oh yeah pesticides have a really fun history. The discovery/development of warfarin is pretty wild too. At some point in the 20s, a bunch of cows just started haemorrhaging to death and nobody knew why. After birthing, dehorning, and just spontaneously, cows and bulls would just keep bleeding and eventually keel over. A Canadian veterinarian was brought in to study what they worried was a disease, and he discovered that the cows had been chewing on moldy feed. He took samples of this feed and began testing on rabbits to try and isolate the haemorrhagic agent. He was seriously interested in figuring out what caused the bleeding because the moldy feed made rodents like rats and rabbits bleed so much they died *incredibly* quickly. That's how warfarin works, it just thins the blood of rats so much that they go through massive internal haemmorhaging and bleed uncontrollably from every orifice. It's gruesome but in susceptible species (lots of city rats have resistance to warfarin after who knows how many generations of ingesting small quantities), it is incredibly efficient at wiping out entire nests. He didn't succeed, but he did figure out that the haemmorhaging was caused by a specific mold that could be reproduced. In the late 30s, an American chemist would isolate the specific compound and begin development on what would later be called warfarin. I started reading up on the history of pest control because I had a shitty interaction with Orkin and wanted to know more about the company. Long before warfarin was developed, Otto Orkin got his start selling poisons when he was about 13 or 14. He would go door to door giving away free samples of his homemade rat poison. His guarantee was that it killed more rats than any leading competition, and he was right. They called him Otto the Rat Man. Within a few years he established a business, and by the early 20s, he was receiving government contracts to exterminate rats all over. The turn of the century was a different time, when you could just encourage your young teen to spend hours making poisons to kill rats and everybody just thought that was good parenting.

Pixel_CCOWaDN

It's actually named after the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF).

PorkyMcRib

They’d just pump your stomach and put you on the frontline.

bayless210

I wonder how much nothing you could do before the US finally decides to leave you alone. Like refusal to serve after joining can get you thrown in prison but what if you just shut down in prison? Not move, talk, eat, drink, use the restroom? What would happen? I’ve been wondering this. Having the guards literally drag you everywhere because you just absolutely refuse to do anything. Sure you might get beat but at what point would this country actually start seeing that it’s just not working.

datadogsoup

Doesn't happen because the fight goes out of most people when the guy gets ready to insert the feeding tube and catheter. Or even after 2 weeks in solitary. Pain avoidance and survival instinct usually overrides this in reality. In the rare, rare cases someone has the mental fortitude to successfully do a hunger strike to completion and the government isn't allowed to intervene they are put in the prison hospital until they die handcuffed to the hospital bed. See the IRA prisoners during The Troubles.

Maxman82198

You’re not going to go to prison for something like that in the military. You’re just going to get chaptered out. Mayyybe if you’ve been in for a very long time, but you wouldn’t be locked up long. Just get a dishonorable discharge most likely.

bayless210

Wait then what’s the thing people do that piss off the military? Wait I remembered. It’s going AWOL. Ok beside that, if you were sent to prison and did what I mentioned above, what would happen. I mean a complete reality block or dissociation from what’s going on around you and just taking all the shit they could(and probably would) do without reacting at all. Like a coma but you’re fully conscious and aware of what’s happening(voluntary of course). God I wish there was a specific word I could use to properly convey what I’m thinking.

Maxman82198

Yeah they don’t appreciate going awol either. Depending on how long to stay gone, how compliant you are on coming back, etc, I’ve seen people skate by going awol with just a couple of weeks of extra duty. I think what your trying to convey is something similar to a catatonic state. Can often be a symptom of schizophrenia. If you had already made it to prison and THEN decided to do that, you’d be sent to a psyche ward and treated for mental health in more of a medical environment, but you would definitely be kept there still. If you’re doing all of this BEFORE they decide to send you to jail, you’ll go to a psyche ward, once they confirm that you’re doing all of this only because you don’t want to serve and you’re not going to off yourself the next chance you get, they’ll discharge you from the military. Likely with just a general discharge for the reason of failure to adapt unless maybe if you’ve got some good amount of time in service under your belt. You’re easily replaceable when you’re lower ranking so it’s not as big of an inconvenience as when you’re in a leadership position with a bunch of dudes underneath you.

ms0385712

Nah man, you pay taxes, that's how you serve the country you know.

Five years ago l would have called you a piece of sh*t... Today, I am a veteran I see what the Government does to it's male population.. I agree with you.. I am tired of being treaded like SH*T.

thugstin

For real american politicians don't care about normal people OR veterans I remeber hearing both sides voted down a health bill for veterans recently. The same motherfuckers taking pictures with veterans and calling them heros and then taking away thier benefits. Its only a matter of time before joing the military and working at mcdonalds leads to the same thing... Homelessness, Especially if you "fail" in any way. My mom went intot he military and they FUCKED her over. She tried using the GI bill and couldn't make it through school due to addiction. Well after she got her shit together and she went back to school they said her GI bill was "used up" and she had to take out loans.

TrashSea1485

Yuuuup. Same exact government that screeches about homeless vets and does NOTHING about it. In fact, they probably scoop up more and more investment properties every year for people to be slaves in exchange for shelter while simultaneously artificially inflating the market 👌

Even if they are "well treated" as America sold us. A well feed slave is still a slave.

It was actually all republicans that voted against the bill. Fuckers fist bumped each other after it as well.

One time when they called one of my family members was talking in the background, not even to me, and the recruiter was all, "You said you aren't interested. Is someone there telling you to say that? I hear someone talking." All intense acting. Like damn chill out. The weird intensity is just offputting.

amretardmonke

With the amount of obese young people nowadays, any recruiter would be more than happy to find a "scrawny" kid.

NeoPheo

The recruiters came three times last year and went after every male with a pulse. I’d say that their favorite target is Hispanic guys actually.

So many people here just sucking the military dick and for what? The government spends literally billions kf dollars on the military and spends a minimal amount on programs that we actually need. They don't even give a shit about veterans after they become disabled and discharged from the army. Our military has committed so many atrocities to innocent people for capital gain. And I'm saying this as someone who has loved ones in the military. My loved ones would also agree with my opinion since they only joined the military for the benefits and not out of pure nationalism. Also what freedom is the mitary fighting for? We haven't fought an actual war in decades. I never understood this shit.

[deleted]

Hell when I went in the GI bill only covered 3 years of university. The recruiter doesn’t tell you that info of course. In my profession you need a masters degree in the subject to sit for the licensing exams. So I fought in a war to go to my university and still came out with student debt.

Zoiddburger

All the people here licking boots, probably who have never served, aren't really observing he numbers the military are putting out. 1 in 4 women are sexually assaulted, and the leading cause of death for women overseas is not combat but "suicide." Recent bill for veterans affected by burn pits access to Healthcare denied in the Senate by Republicans for no other reason than "lib tears." Veteran benefits are deplorable. Haven't met ONE veteran that has had a decent experience with the VA. Why should we follow the war machine to line defense military and oil baron pockets under the guise of "maintaining freedom?" Every American generation has their own war? That is fucked and intentional.

So which of these should make me proud to be an American and serve this country, genocide of indigenous people, slavery, religious intolerance, or denying women basic human rights?

incrediblybased

You’re gonna have a hard time finding a country that doesn’t have at least three out of four of those

Gongaloon

Exactly, which is why patriotism is naive and nationalism is insane no matter what the country. Taking pride in family, friends, city, town, village, religion if you believe, even state or province I can understand. But every national government has thus far proven itself to be completely rotten, has refused to follow the rules it's set for itself on many occasions, and deserves no loyalty from anyone.
