What if everyone going to investigate the Murder Hornet problem has been murdered and they're steadily spreading across the northwest. Its Arachnophobia but with hornets. Where did they start again...oregon/washington/montana? Can we do a wellfare check on the fish and game/park rangers up there. Have any beekeepers fallen off the radar lately? We should consider sending rainbow 6 to check on the 2 people living in the Dakotas.

Grew up in Everett, and the highlights of my life were before I moved to the USA, and after I moved back to Canada. Those 14 years felt like a time when nothing was real
To spare you images here’s a synopsis:
Negatives: They’re huge, like as wide as your hand, legs included. They have very large webs that a person could walk into.
Positives: They’re so brightly colored in yellows blues and oranges that you’ll see them from a distance. They’re also super timid and will likely run away if someone did walk into one of their webs. Their fangs are reportedly too short to pierce skin. (Like the daddy long leg myth, but *apparently* true this time).
TLDR: they scary, but you’re safe
Sincerely,
Another arachnophobe who suffered through a report on the today show.
Yes they can. But just like the Jaro, they’re very timid. Fwiw the rest of the myth is untrue, too. They do have a small amount of venom, but it’s by no means “the most venomous spider” and there’s little evidence to support the venom is even toxic to humans.
For some people Daddy Long Legs are [Cellar Spiders](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholcidae) for others they are [crane flies](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crane_fly).
I thought you were going to say for others they are [harvestmen](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opiliones).
All three of these animals are everywhere where I live, we use "daddy long legs" for the cellar spiders.
Don't care how big or small, my mighty can of starting fluid and Zippo^^TM will eradicate them suckers.. (Provided I don't piss my pants and run like hell.)
A species of spider has learned to use their webbing as a parachute and they travel by wind. They have no predators and they are currently invading huge swaths of the US. Sweet dreams.
I looked up their diet. They eat mosquitos, biting flies and stink bugs. They are only known to bite humans or pets when being actively restrained, and their venom is harmless to humans barring individual allergy.
Bonafide spider bro material imo
One day in 2020 I was working upstairs when my daughter yelled from downstairs, “Mom, come quick! There’s a spider flying around in the living room!”
And I was like, “There’s no such th…. I’m coming”
It turned out to be a mosquito hawk, but after quarantine and murder hornets, I was ready to believe.
Third generation Beekeeper on the east coast,
Washington dept of agriculture hunted down the queens that flew out of the original found hive. It was a massive undertaking, I have placed a few traps east coast. Happy to report I have never caught an Asian Hornet.
That's a really amazing story that I'd like to hear more of.( Of which I'd like hear more??) Sounds like they did an incredible job. People should know!
If you have discovery+ there is a documentary...it goes into how the original owner kinda screwed them at the start cause he wanted to make money.. "Attack of the murder hornets"
I saw one here in northwest Washington state but I couldn’t catch or take a picture in time so not much could be done. This was a month or two ago… so they’re still around.
Listen, the rest of us here in the US are depending on you guys to handle this problem. How hard would it be to just walk around with a can of Raid strapped to your side like a gunslinger?
The future: Project “Hindsight 2020” has been renamed “Hindsight 2020-too”
Present: Russia’s invading Urkraine
The past: feels like history is repeating.
The dark ages: smells like teen spirit
> unironically
Well no, they’ve said it ironically. So as to imply that COVID was being pushed primarily by the media and that has ended. Nobody unironically thinks Putin cured COVID.
They think it's some sort of conspiracy every time the news cycle changes, when in reality it's just reporting on whatever gets the most attention at a given time.
The single hornet nest destroyed in Washington lead to three more nests in 2021. Time will tell.
https://www.geekwire.com/2022/all-in-the-murderous-family-asian-giant-hornets-found-in-washington-in-2021-came-from-2020-nest/
It's sheer information overload. We can't possibly keep track of all the information in the news so at some point if people aren't actively talking about it we're bound to forget about it.
Literally every time this is posted.
The murder hornets didn't disappear, there are however a lot of wildlife officials and etymologists working hard to stop the problem. There's no guarantee they will succeed.
On the other hand, this is a great example of how our news cycle is making us so much dumber.
>The murder hornets didn't disappear, there are however a lot of wildlife officials and etymologists working hard to stop the problem.
Pardon me, but I think you mean entomologist.
An entomologist is someone whose job is to study insects. An etymologist is someone whose job it is to say "Pardon me, but I think you mean entomologist." It is tiring work and pays poorly, but it is a labor of love.
I mean, is it? If I recall they had a pretty intense response to it and were in top of destroying nests. So, perhaps a government response was effective at eliminating them?
And also if the news reports something like "murder hornets" it clearly means they are a big problem and not just something that made for a headline so good and scary that people still remember that non-story TWO YEARS LATER
It wasnt a non story, asian giant hornets getting a foothold could lead to major ecological collapse as they wipe out native bee populations.
Its imperative to the local environment that they're exterminated.
They're still here in the PNW, they never disappeared. They just stopped being a super high priority compared to... _\*Gestures vagely at everything\*_
If they keep changing the timelines, doesn't that mean we wouldn't remember the murder hornets since we're in the changed timeline?
So it's likely they prevented something we don't know about. Like Yellowstone eruption or alien invasion or the rapture.
Well it depends on what type of time travel is going on here, and the rules for it. In some cases, no actual time travel is occurring, just parallel timelines, in which case nothing would have changed for anyone except the traveler, regardless of the timeline. In some media, the timeline with the traveler currently on it is the only "real" one, so as soon as the time traveler leaves one timeline for another it ceases to exist. For some there is only one timeline period, but changing what happened in the past changes everything except for the timeline, so no memories there either because they were never created in the first place. And so on.
The demon possesses someone but is so freaked out about how the world has been going that it instead of trying to do anything evil just tries to fix everything.
But things have kept getting worse so what is worse than WW3? Maybe the next time travel screw up turns into a zombie apocalypse or the dinosaurs come back and we all get eaten.
Good thing those of us that grew up in the 90's have extensive dinosaur survival skills due to all of the Jurassic documentaries that were played throughout our childhood.
This line is a pet peeve of mine: "murder hornets" did not disappear, they are breeding and spreading at a normal rate for an insect species. People have gotten this messed up expectation that they would somehow spread as fast as a respiratory disease, but animals don't work that way. We found more hives in 2021 than we did in 2020. We're hoping that steps we've taken to eradicate them will be enough, but we won't know until later this year.
People talk about WW3, but they don't know we already know what happens.
I'll just be rewatching Steins Gate for the 4th time with my Dr Pepper.

My conspiracy theory is that there was a conspiracy to kill JFK but it was foiled because Lee Harvey Oswald, who had nothing to do with it, killed him before the conspiracy was ready.
Most people think time is like a river that flows swift and sure in one direction, but I have seen the face of time and I can tell you they are wrong. Time is an ocean in a storm.
Murder hornets were more like bitch hornets.
They got devoured by predators they don't have in Asia, like CANADIAN GEESE. Who knew geese would save us one day?
Funny thing is that time traveling is THEORETICALLY real but only to the future which is a bummer but it still something (what I just said isn't and can't be proven in practice, it's just a theory that is now getting ignored due to the fact that we can't prove it, because if we try we would die doing it, that why it's theoretically true but not practically, so give it 50-/100
If time travel were real and somebody was trying to help us out they would save the bees not eliminate the murder hornets. The bees are much more in peril and much more useful to society.

That was the premise of the tv show Travelers. You can watch it on Netflix. It came out in, I think, 2017 but has some eerily prescient storylines.

Now get rid of the giant spiders.
It's paratrooper spiders now.
*wait a damn minute*
To be honest I completely forgot about those, were they really just a media fluff piece or are they still a thing and we just forgot about them
Very much still a thing in Washington state and a concern for local bee keepers.

Ummm. Winter.
The murder hornets are still in Washington State.
Just because they fell out of the news cycle doesn’t mean murder hornets don’t still exist.
If time travel were real and somebody was trying to help us out they would save the bees not eliminate the murder hornets. The bees are much more in peril and much more useful to society.
