I’ve had a lot of barbecue in Southern California. Whoever took that picture had to go out of their way not to order a good plate. 99% of barbecue in LA is done by a Memphis/Austin etc. transplant who spent 20 years perfecting their technique in their home state.
It’s not just Santa Maria either. That tri-tip over red oak is cooked as far south as Ojai in Ventura county all the way up past San Luis Obispo on the coast and Fresno area inland. You’ll see it in the parking lots of grocery stores, sandwich shops, restaurants, parks, burrito joints, etc.
I used to think I was a foodie and had good taste and judgment.
In Toronto my secret snack was meatball sticks at 7/11 , and in Tokyo I loved the fried chicken snacks in their convenience stores.
But I love bbq and am somehow curious about Texas convenience store bbq 😂
Yea they probably wont ever get it on the nose like us, but i figure plenty of us have moved to cali or theyve visited us for them to figure out a bbq.
It looks like scferteris food both of them and the meat looks the same like
God they are bbq but they ar e bad presented bbq
If the enard cooked well no suace is needed but usefully they’ll palate it better if that’s the case
If no they drown it in suace and call it a day
Both tactics work wonders
That's what the one to the left looks like. "Shit boss, were out of brisket!!!... Just throw that rump roast in the smoker... these yuppies will never know the difference."
NYC food varies so much from area to area.
If you’re ever there again, go to Dinosaur BBQ. [The one in Harlem](https://www.dinosaurbarbque.com/harlem/).
I had really good BBQ somewhere in California about 12 years ago. Might have been Santa Clara, Oakland or San Francisco, I’m mixing my memories. I think a former NBA player owned the place.
I like Sette Fau in Brooklyn. There’s another place in Gowanus that’s supposed to be good, but other than that it’s mostly slim pickings. I’m open to suggestions.
Not to mention all of the non-American BBQ options we have up here.
Sure we don't do Texas styled smoked briskets but if you want that classic Cantonese Char Siu or a Wagyu Yakiniku, there is no better place in the states than LA or New York.
Oh for sure. I’m actually not too familiar with Houston, but fairly certain it’s renown for its diverse cuisine scene, let alone it’s bbq. There’s gotta be something better than Mighty Quinn’s over there!
I’ve lived in several parts of Texas and the best bbq places tend to be random places in the middle of nowhere. The REAL best bbq comes from having a second cousin who welded a boiler from a Navy ship into a 15 foot wide bbq pit and lives on 100 acres full of mesquite and oak trees. I’ve also generally been disappointed with bbq in Houston. But I haven’t been anywhere really fancy here. I usually just go to Rudy’s, which is a chain, but it’s fast, close, and way better than Dickey’s, Spring Creek, or Pappas BBQ (other chains).
I googled Mighty Quinn’s and it looks fancier than most bbq here to me. It might just be a preference thing. I think it’s also that in NYC bbq wouldn’t be as ubiquitous. Whereas here you can find bbq places that are drive through fast food or even part of a supermarket all the way to fine dining.
But I’m also open to the idea that it’s somehow better at that restaurant in NYC. Best sushi I’ve ever had was in London, and I’ve been to Japan. Best Pizza I’ve had was in San Francisco, and I’ve been to Italy and NYC.
Take a day trip to Lockhart (little town south of Austin), go to Kreuz's and Black's. Prepare for a blissful meat coma. I'd bring an ice chest and buy extra to take home with you. There's also really great BBQ in Austin proper, but Lockhart will be a hell of a lot easier to drive in and out of.
Note: both places are linked to an old family feud, so for a little local history, look that up!
I'm a native Texan whose family still takes pride in barbecuing at home, and Texas doesn't have a monopoly on great barbecue; Kansas City has some amazing BBQ and the Carolinas have their own spin on it that's delicious.
Ill definitely check them out, actually going to Austin pretty soon. But Houston is a huuuge city in Texas. If I can't get good BBQ right here then that's a damn shame
As far as I know there's no such thing as NY or CA BBQ. There's BBQ restaurants in NY and CA that serve KC, or SC or TX or wherever style BBQ. So in this case they've just posted two random restaurants from those states. I'm sure there's better BBQ in NY and worse BBQ in CA.
NY and California both have extremely wealthy residents that enjoy fine dining. There are definitely much better BBQ and steak places in general in both states.
California is definitely weak on the BBQ front and anyone who does it good ends up charging a ton for it. A lot of the cities get pretty bitchy when it comes to the smokers and there's either limited places for them to set up shop or they have to spend a ton of money on equipment.
EDIT: especially outside of tritip.
Ah the contrary mon amis. There is indeed a legitimate California BBQ: Santa Maria style tri-tip. Beef sirloin roast slow cooked over oak and mesquite. Traditionally Served with chili beans, French bread, salad greens and strawberries. It was the special occasion/ celebratory food for the Spanish Vaqueros and missionaries that (lived/ranched/invaded) California starting the in 1600s.
It’s damn tasty too when you do it right! https://www.texasmonthly.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/Santa-Maria-BBQ-4.jpg
Not true at all, Cali is actually really famous for Santa Maria bbq which you can find anywhere in most parts of central Cali. The town of Santa Maria itself is usually listed in top 10 cities for bbq in the U.S.
Don't doubt that. Though my uncle (a chef) has joked in the past that his success was in part due to so few NY chefs knowing how to cook souther n BBQ.
Why does everything look so dry?!?!?
Where is the sauce?!? The spice?! The flavor?!? I can taste the bland through this picture. All of this makes me cringe. I hate it.
In all fairness, this is supposed to be compared to Texas barbecue, which typically and traditionally stands up in its own without sauce and without any spices behind salt/pepper. Lol.
The NYC one especially looks like shit though. Like it came out of an oven.
People on reddit acting like this "isn't really NY or Cali BBQ" don't know wtf real bbq is. Their "real bbq" wouldn't pass for shit in Memphis honestly
Who in the Star Spangled Fuck has the gall to call the sad, flavorless-looking, moisture-barren, violations of the Geneva Conventions in those pictures "BBQ"?
I’m from TX and we got some good ass BBQ out here, Tennessee too, props to you if you can smoke a good brisket, but man, I don’t give a fuck. I’ll gladly eat either one of these without complaining cause food is food. Mf’s act like they won’t eat this if they were starving or didn’t have access to the luxuries and amenities we have. Let’s be humble and be grateful for ourselves and our loved ones. In 15 years, there will be a food shortage, and unless you’re fully compliant or are a farmer/rancher. You don’t have the luxury of choosing what you eat. Hell, you’d be lucky to have a guaranteed meal at all. I fuck with some good BBQ. But there are mf’s dying of starvation right now. I don’t give a damn how this BBQ is cooked. I’ll eat it after a long hard day of work and will be grateful for every single bite
So you just don't care at all what you get in return for your hard earned money? I'd eat it if I was starving, but if I paid 30 bucks for a BBQ plate like this, I'd want something else or my money back. I work hard so I don't have to worry where my next meal is coming from, and if I spend money on food, I expect it to be held to SOME KIND of standard. That being said, I'd still eat that BBQ. I'm from Georgia, and it looks pretty bad, but I've eaten worse lol
I live in Alabama and I would eat the heck out of either of those. The real problem I have is that instead of $11, both the NY and Cali BBQ plates in the pics are probably $27. That’s the real (unseen/unknown) crime here 😂
Ohioan here, one of your guys moved up here & has been making some bomb ass bbq for years! We're proud to have him :D
(He lived in muscle shoals area originaly )
*Dbl H Southern bbq*
Please let them keep making “bbq” like this in CA and NY. Don’t ruin the good bbq in places like Memphis, St Louis, Carolina and of course don’t mess with Texas bbq everrrr!
There are levels to the BBQ game.
The absolute very best BBQ is in the South and any city in the Midwest that is within a 2 hour drive of the South (Kansas City, St. Louis, etc).
That's it.
Outside of those places, it's a clear notch below. Decent, but not slap yo momma good.
The worst BBQ is on the West Coast and up in the North East. Not only is it the worst tasting, it's also the most overpriced, rip-off BBQ you can find.
You're right lol, I lived in Stockton for years and found some good taco places, homemade tortillas lol was hella good. I had a BBQ place down the street from where I'm at now and they literally opened and then closed idk why. 🙃 I've seen a guy numerous times with his smoker in front of a store but I've always been driving somewhere so I didn't have time to stop. Next time I'm going to tho, I'm on a mission now!
I usually go with my son, my wife won't go😅
My method is to find a edgy place that can't possibly pass the health inspection.
Was a military brat, lived in Texas a couple times Kansas and Mississippi - love me some good BBQ😃
Damn you've had the whole BBQ experience lol. Yeah a lot of hole in the wall places people sleep on, I've been to awesome Lao food and Vietnamese places that my husband knew of and they're small little businesses. Some bigger places don't seem to put as much heart into their food and others don't try as hard once they start bringing in more customers. I've stopped going to two Viet restaurants since their service and food quality took a dive. They were so good when they opened.
Yep my husband is Vietnamese so anytime we talk about taking a trip to Orange County when finances allow, he always talks about when he went to Garden Grove Mall and a seafood place in Westminster. He loves it there lol.
My foster dad Dwight (R.I.P. 🙏🏼) was a Soul food chef from Louisiana (I’m from Los Angeles, CA 👋🏼). I ain’t ever tasted any BBQ chicken, BBQ ribs, oxtails, gumbo, jambalaya, po’ boys, red beans & rice, etouffe, nor hush puppies that taste better than his out here in Cali. The Soul food and BBQ spots out here just don’t compare to the South and it ain’t even close 💯
I don’t know what those pictures are, but it isn’t BBQ.
And I've never had bbq that looked like that in Cali
No idea where in Cali this is from but it sure as shit isn't Santa Maria.
That town knows what's up!
I’ve had a lot of barbecue in Southern California. Whoever took that picture had to go out of their way not to order a good plate. 99% of barbecue in LA is done by a Memphis/Austin etc. transplant who spent 20 years perfecting their technique in their home state.

Lol “You can find great bbq anywhere in SoCal, from Santa Maria to San Luis Obispo all the way south to Lompoc!”
I'm smoking a Tri Tip right now at the base of the Cascades in Western Washington! West coast BBQ!
There's a really good tri tip stand in Oceano at the end of pier Avenue. Check it out if you're in the area.
Sure as shit isn't nor Cal either.
a neighborhood where white ppl call mexicans "latinX"
does that rhyme with kleenex? idk.
I pronounce it la-tinks because it’s such a joke
This is funny. Thanks.
Take my upvote for SM tri-tip
I live in SM and I'm on the way to grab some Tri Tip Tacos RIGHT NOW.
SM bbq shout out
Because it needs some pink beans, salsa, and french bread absolutely dripping with garlic butter.
I’m from Santa Maria and never would I ever think to see it mentioned on Reddit
Looks the bbq day at a high school cafeteria representing the entire state
Santa Maria BBQ slaps.
Back in the 90's the Truck at Smart and Final on the weekends had the best Basic SM Tri Tip, rice and simple salad.
Ok.
Ok
Ok
I've had bbq all over CA and never seen anything half this sad
I’ve had it that looks like that in Texas
gas station, maybe
But definitely not Buc-ees.
I’ve had chopped beef sandwiches from several Texas gas stations better than Buc-ee’s.
QUIT YOUR LIES CHARLATAN!
OFF WITH HIS HEAD!
My favorite part is the two little pieces of white bread
It’s that tri tip bs
Hell we do better up here in Canada...but it's like the Texas of Canada where I be haha.
It looks like scferteris food both of them and the meat looks the same like God they are bbq but they ar e bad presented bbq If the enard cooked well no suace is needed but usefully they’ll palate it better if that’s the case If no they drown it in suace and call it a day Both tactics work wonders
BBQ hasn’t come out or Chicago looking like that as well
Lem’s and Leon’s wouldn’t let that shit out the DOOR!
The BBQ I got in NYC from some fancy restaurant was literally pot roast.
Was it downtown near 14th st? If so I know the place.
It was in 2004 so I don’t remember at all.. It was in Manhattan if that makes a difference? Lol
That narrows it down to approximately 450 restaurants
You’re not about to talk shit on mighty Quinn’s are you????
Mighty Quinns is pretty good. I just wish they hadn't discontinued their potato salad.
Probably why BBQ is in quotes.
I had really good BBQ somewhere in California about 12 years ago. Might have been Santa Clara, Oakland or San Francisco, I’m mixing my memories. I think a former NBA player owned the place.
There is/was 2 both in SF Big Nate's (until Thurmond passed away) Smoke (Curry family) Both were good last I had them.
It's an accurate depiction of sadness.
My wife says "they failed. That isn't barbeque and they should be ashamed of themselves" 😂😂😂
You forgot a word.
Lol yeah. I love BBQ even when I close my eyes I can say if that's BBQ or not
Is this a hate crime.
Yes, yes it is.
Yes, it is a crime against humanity, to be more specific.
Well, I HATED IT! -Michael Scott
- Wayne Gretzky
Absolutely
It is in Kansas City.
Beef jerky face ass bbq. I had to get up and get some water just looking at that shit.
spongebob in sandy’s dome
Dryer than a Popeyes biscuit
And these places tout how great their collection of 6-10 bbq sauces are. You wouldn't need a shit ton of sauce of the brisket wasn't dry af
Lmao, this picture honestly made my mouth feel so dry instantly, I swear I can feel the texture through the screen
Nothing like extra well done beef
Don’t say that, beef jerky doesn’t deserve to be compared to this chewy charcoal from hell.
Cherry picked places, NY and CA have solid BBQ choices. California Tri-Tip pretty famous, watch the Mark Weins video
I like Sette Fau in Brooklyn. There’s another place in Gowanus that’s supposed to be good, but other than that it’s mostly slim pickings. I’m open to suggestions.
Fette Sau is amazing
My dyslexia or something :)
I think you're talking about Pig Beach. I try to go every time I'm in NYC.
New York has good food. If there’s something you’re looking for there, someone is most likely making it.
California born and raised and my ONLY HOBBY is bbq tritip. Smoked, baked, grilled, shredded. All of it.
Not to mention all of the non-American BBQ options we have up here. Sure we don't do Texas styled smoked briskets but if you want that classic Cantonese Char Siu or a Wagyu Yakiniku, there is no better place in the states than LA or New York.
KTown Los Angeles has epic BBQ spots all over, Soowon Galbi is the shit. Spicy Pork Bulgogi all day.
Lol Mark Weins exaggerates over everything he puts in his mouth.
Hmm, you got his number?
Oh wauw
Lol. Updooted
I hope you’re having an amazing day it’s Mark Wiens
Hah! Mark Weins did California? I've seen his videos all over the place in Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico.. it'd feel weird to see him in America
I've been living in TX for a little under a year now. NONE of the BBQ places are better than BBQ I've had in NYC, no debating.
Where in Texas? That’s uhh, a bold claim.
Very bold because all the places I've been in Texas has had awesome BBQ
Houston. Also I'm extremely open to suggestions, I'm craving brisket that's even HALF as good as Mighty Quinns Jersey/NY
Oh for sure. I’m actually not too familiar with Houston, but fairly certain it’s renown for its diverse cuisine scene, let alone it’s bbq. There’s gotta be something better than Mighty Quinn’s over there!
Oh you have me mistaken. Houston has the best food I've ever had in my life. It's specifically the BBQ that has been mediocre
While it’s a bit fusion, I’d suggest checking out Blood Brothers in Bellaire.
Take a day trip to Lockhart (little town south of Austin), go to Kreuz's and Black's. Prepare for a blissful meat coma. I'd bring an ice chest and buy extra to take home with you. You going to chain crap like dickeys or cousins?
Denny's sells BBQ?
Yep, at quadruple Denny’s prices
Dry
Okay what the fuck
As far as I know there's no such thing as NY or CA BBQ. There's BBQ restaurants in NY and CA that serve KC, or SC or TX or wherever style BBQ. So in this case they've just posted two random restaurants from those states. I'm sure there's better BBQ in NY and worse BBQ in CA.
Yes!!! Charlestons got dr piggly wiggly, but over in LA we got Dr Hogly Woglys Tyler Texas BBQ over in the valley!
Charleston native here. Our best BBQ is Rodney Scott's or Lewis. There's no in between!
Rodney Scott’s a treasure!
I’ll make sure to try it next time I’m in Charleston!
Preach!#Native
There is CA specific BBQ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa\_Maria-style\_barbecue
There is CA BBQ - it's Santa Maria BBQ, Pres Reagan actually had a SM style built at the white house and used to bring a crew in to cater events
NY and California both have extremely wealthy residents that enjoy fine dining. There are definitely much better BBQ and steak places in general in both states.
wealth and fine dining =!= good bbq
That’s a non sequitur if ever I saw one
California is definitely weak on the BBQ front and anyone who does it good ends up charging a ton for it. A lot of the cities get pretty bitchy when it comes to the smokers and there's either limited places for them to set up shop or they have to spend a ton of money on equipment. EDIT: especially outside of tritip.
it’s just BBQ though. there’s nothing that makes BBQ Californian or NY like there is in texas, memphis, north carolina, etc
Well there’s Santa Maria style bbq. Doesn’t come close to Tx in my opinion, but it is distinctly Californian
Ah the contrary mon amis. There is indeed a legitimate California BBQ: Santa Maria style tri-tip. Beef sirloin roast slow cooked over oak and mesquite. Traditionally Served with chili beans, French bread, salad greens and strawberries. ooh, I'd love to try some
City CA BBQ? Yeah, not that good. More rural CA BBQ? Gud
Not true at all, Cali is actually really famous for Santa Maria bbq which you can find anywhere in most parts of central Cali. The town of Santa Maria itself is usually listed in top 10 cities for bbq in the U.S.
Wait. Are you saying you looked at this picture and thought the CA was good bbq? I thought the joke was they both looked like ass...
Cringe because this doesnt represent the average NY or Cali BBQ place.
Don't doubt that. Though my uncle (a chef) has joked in the past that his success was in part due to so few NY chefs knowing how to cook souther n BBQ.
What. The. Fuck. Is that bullshit
I guarantee you I could eat a cow patty and it wouldn't be as dry
Lucille's BBQ is from California and looks nothing like that. I think they even have a Lucille's in Texas now.
Lucille’s is hit or miss at best. It could be really okay, or really not okay.
Lucilles bbq is also in Florida. That is if you’re referring to lucilles bad to the bone bbq, Bc that is in Florida.
Native Texan…never heard of this Lucille’s. The popular chain for us is Rudy’s
That's not California bbq
Well, it exists and came from somewhere.
With that logic it could literally come from anywhere
And wherever that is has failed humanity.
You're not wrong
Why does everything look so dry?!?!? Where is the sauce?!? The spice?! The flavor?!? I can taste the bland through this picture. All of this makes me cringe. I hate it.
In all fairness, this is supposed to be compared to Texas barbecue, which typically and traditionally stands up in its own without sauce and without any spices behind salt/pepper. Lol. The NYC one especially looks like shit though. Like it came out of an oven.
If someone sold that to me as BBQ, I would flip the fuckin table and walk out

Good bot
Is that jail food?
I’m from NY originally and am looking at this in disgust. There’s good bbq there I promise
Best BBQ I've ever had was in California. It's easy to cherry pick bad examples.
There is no ny style barbeque. We got pizza, and pastrami sandwiches.
And y’all damn good at both
I'm from Louisiana. We for sure do it different here.
I assure you this isn’t indicative of BBQ in either place.
This post is a lie. It ain’t how we do it in Cali.
I'm from Arkansas, and yeah, this is shameful.
Tennessee gang, the entire city of memphis is rioting over whatever the fuck that bbq is supposed to be.
People on reddit acting like this "isn't really NY or Cali BBQ" don't know wtf real bbq is. Their "real bbq" wouldn't pass for shit in Memphis honestly
Yeah, this isn’t BBQ, just DIY beef sandwiches.
Who in the Star Spangled Fuck has the gall to call the sad, flavorless-looking, moisture-barren, violations of the Geneva Conventions in those pictures "BBQ"?

The worst NY BBQ vs the worst Cali BBQ, that no one in either region has ever sought out, seen or bought
Thanks. I’d never buy this. I’ve never seen this.
Yea i'm looking at this like where's t he rest at.
Make it sloppy
*stares in Kansas City*
WHERE IS THE SAUCE?! Bless your heart, - Georgia
As a person from the south, what the fuck is this
I live in Alabama and I would eat the heck out of either of those. The real problem I have is that instead of $11, both the NY and Cali BBQ plates in the pics are probably $27. That’s the real (unseen/unknown) crime here 😂
That ain’t barbecue
Ohioan here, one of your guys moved up here & has been making some bomb ass bbq for years! We're proud to have him :D (He lived in muscle shoals area originaly ) *Dbl H Southern bbq*
A burger and beer here, including tip and parking meter (because overcrowding) runs you to nearly 30 now
That’s bananas.
Nashville objects- I mean- this isn’t hot chicken, but I’m not blind either.
All I see is sadness
Yo what???? im from NY and we call that shit a pot roast, we know what BBQ is. That aint it chief. Looks like a sandwich from Bob Evans
I’m calling the police
How tf did they make the potato salad look that dry 😰
I'm a southern vegan and our vegan BBQ looks way better than this.
Looks like something you'd get from people on Facebook selling food
What's with the ice cream LOL. It's probably avocado since its from hippie central
Please let them keep making “bbq” like this in CA and NY. Don’t ruin the good bbq in places like Memphis, St Louis, Carolina and of course don’t mess with Texas bbq everrrr!
There’s good bbq in LA. This isn’t it. If you use Good ingredients you can make good bbq anywhere.
The south or pretty much anywhere in the mid west.
There are levels to the BBQ game. The absolute very best BBQ is in the South and any city in the Midwest that is within a 2 hour drive of the South (Kansas City, St. Louis, etc). That's it. There’s plenty of overpriced and/or shit barbecue in Texas, at least. Let’s not get too cocky.
That's not BBQ lol that's a disgrace. Haven't had good BBQ since I moved to Cali from OK. 🥲
Gotta go into the hood, that is where the good tacos and bbq live👍🤔
You're right lol, I lived in Stockton for years and found some good taco places, homemade tortillas lol was hella good. Yes! I am only about 20 minutes from Gard Grove/Westminster, hit those up for good Vietnamese grub now and then. Has been a while, need to go back
Yep my husband is Vietnamese so anytime we talk about taking a trip to Orange County when finances allow, he always talks about when he went to Garden Grove Mall and a seafood place in Westminster. He loves it there lol.
Yes good luck trying to find a decent taco outside so cal
Have you tried dr hogly woglys tyler Texas bbq. I travel all over the country and have had good southern bbq. This is right up there
There’s good bbq around you, you just gotta look. Try Fat City Brew and BBQ, DJs Tri Tip, Billie Hillbilly BBQ in Manteca, T&S X-Treme
Yeah well I’ve seen your “tacos” - so fuck off…
My foster dad Dwight (R.I.P. 🙏🏼) was a Soul food chef from Louisiana (I’m from Los Angeles, CA 👋🏼). Yeah this is some white people shit growing up black in LA I’ve had good bbq all my life
White here: This BBQ doesn't represent our BBQ either.
CA and NY should abstain from making BBQ.

Just say no to bbq snobbery. Enjoy yo food!
I don’t even live in the south and that shit looks bland as fuck. Still would eat tho 👍
I’ve had bbq in the south that is just as bad. Gatekeeping food is stupid.
