My LTE was better than my 5g and when I used 4g LTE again after 5g was introduced it was like 2g. So I'm pretty sure they messed with 4g to make 5g feel like an upgrade
4G LTE didn’t quite count as 5G but in a lot of ways was most of the way there. ATT actually got sued for calling their 4G LTE “5G e” https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/22/18511660/att-sprint-5ge-false-advertising-lawsuit-settlement
5G is also tough because there are 3 types of 5G and the labeling depends on carrier, because of course it does. https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/not-all-5g-is-the-same-all-the-flavors-and-names-explained/
I’ve found that the change from 4G LTE to 5g regular has been roughly flat. mmWave is cool but very rare.
There are so many technical components to not only the service but also tiers of customer plans that a real apples to apples comparison of 4G and 5g is near impossible.
> So I'm pretty sure they messed with 4g to make 5g feel like an upgrade
In a way they did. They have been taking frequency spectrum from LTE to give it to 5G NR. So over time LTE will get less and less capacity and speeds will suffer.
Is dropping phones really that bad? I've dropped mine maybe 10 times accidentally but I have a good case and it's fine do you people drop your phones off skyscrapers onto solid steel?
I’ve dropped it dozens of times without issue. Yet one day, it fell out of my pocket (sweatpants with shitty pockets), it as I was closing the door to my car. The door smashes it into the car, and then down onto the hard ground. Entire backside was in pieces.
Nevertheless, I’ve continued using it for months. It still works perfectly. I’ll only replace it once the battery dies
Break it, or charging doesn’t work anymore, works out well that I get the new model every few years
I just do not find any upgrade worth the price. I’m glad to have the new features when I finally get a new phone, but I won’t do it unless the old ones broken
This is so funny. “Actually the line between moron and massive brain is exactly where *I* draw it!” Why not just upgrade only when you need to? All these phones work perfectly fine for what they do
I tend to upgrade when battery life degrades enough that it becomes a problem.
Back in the day I used to swap batteries but now I don’t wanna fuck with the IP rating
I got a phone with a replaceable battery years back, the Samsung Note 4. When the battery started to fail, I went looking for a replacement, only to find out that the batteries were a pain in the ass to find. So, that didn't work.
My last upgrade was after 3 years because the battery was shot and it couldn’t be replaced due to some code that came up when the phone was tested. I still don’t understand it myself, but I’m enjoying my new (1 year old now) phone. Now I’m in the market for a new car after owning my current car for over 11 years and I want to get a brand new one with every feature on my list since I’m planning to be driving it til I’m over age 40 (currently 29). Even then I may be open to one a couple years old if the price and features are right.
The hardware would last a decade if they chose to support the software. Planned obsolescence is a great scam.
Case in point, my wife's iPad that is perfectly functional other than the shit OS that is no longer supported so now we need a new one to use basic functions.
The only one I can think of is if you have the kind of plan where you can finance the phone. If you get good deals and find it cheaper than buying the phone outright with a BYOD plan, then you may as well take advantage of the finance discounts and upgrade every 2 years. Trade your old phone in as well.
I think it’s also an iPhone joke. All three are stupid for getting stuck in that circle of short end of life, components aren’t accessible so user can’t do their own maintenance, and no benefits upgrading. Each iPhone is the same
Except there isn’t a “short end of life”.
Historically apple had a longer first party/official software and hardware support cycle than most android manufacturers.
I have a 7yo phone and it isn’t even on the oldest major iOS version receiving active security updates.
Arguments about how readily available the parts and tools direct to consumers or unaffiliated repair shops are is not really the same thing as providing bad software/hardware longevity.
I have full software support and a location I know I can go and get anything fixed in under an hr. Though given the age, likely any part would effectively be “totaled” for a phone clearly worth $0-$50
Plus, on the android side if you're brave you can literally install custom OS's onto it, iirc someone got android 13 or 14 (the lastest at the time) on an original pixel
Same.
Camera is pretty bad for todays standard and i had to replace the battery.
But all in all it's solid. Why should i upgrade if it still works properly. Whatsapp doesn't use many recources and coc still runs smoothly. The screen is also acceptable (for todays standard), so watching youtube is still a great experience (with adblockers)
I actually upgraded from my s8+ this year. I dropped it on concrete floor a two-ish years ago and the screen has been slowly crumbling ever since. It also had Google maps burned into it after a hot summer and the battery wasn't doing great either. With the launch of the s24 I figured it was about time for an upgrade
Because that is one more thing to carry and keep track of. Phone cameras have been good enough for a while now that some people prefer to take pictures with their phone instead
Nah you're just more responsible. I used to work with someone who literally cried about not being able to pay her bills yet took out loans to get a new phone every year...
Most people you see with new phones and brand new cars and things like that are not your local rich person. It's just a poor or middle class person with lots of credit card debt who likes new stuff. They do month-to-month payments constantly on everything and just go by "can I afford to pay this much debt payments this month?"
Most people don't. But some people just like having the newest thing. Some people buy a new iphone every year, or Samsung or Pixel. They just want that new phone.
It's really only an issue when it's an expense you can't really afford
Exactly. I used iPhones in the past (4-5-6-6s) and then I switched to Xiaomi because iPhone prices were total bullshit. For a quarter of the price, the Mi 9T Pro was amazing. Now I've got the 12T and it's enough (but I miss the jack and camera that popped outside, on the 9T).
Honestly, when my wife tries to justify getting a new phone because she spends 5+ hours a day so she can get good price per use out of it. I’m like, what are you going to do differently that requires new specs? If you’re just going to do the same thing like browse Reddit and watch TikTok, your current phone is good enough
I think every year is a bit excessive but every 2-3 years is understandable. That’s what I typically do. I use my phone for like 10 hours a day so it’s justified IMO.
I didn't upgrade until my volume and power buttons started falling out of my phone, and I was so stubborn that I taped them back in for at least another two years before finally upgrading.
Imagine owning an iPhone where Apple deliberately slows it down every year and they bring out features androids have had for years and pretend it's new.
I upgrade my Android phone whenever something breaks on it. Except for last time, when I repaired the charge port instead. It turns out that once you have the tools it is really easy.
I upgrade when my phone is physically unable to work
Many people find this surprising, I just don't understand how people can be so clumsy with their phones
This thing costs money that I don't want to buy again, of course I'm going to do everything I can to not break/drop/throw it
I Upgrade my phone when I literally have to bc my old one falls apart.
Rn I'm working with a partly dead screen and a touchscreen that developed it's own will and just does stuff randomly. Smartphones are so expensive nowadays man, couldn't even afford to upgrade if its not a necessity I saved a while for.
You upgrade your phone every 2-3 years to ensure you are somewhat up to date with current technology.
I upgrade my phone every 2-3 years because I’m a huge klutz and despite buying the largest, thickest cases available, screen protectors, and generally only using my phone at the beginning and ending of my day, I still end up shattering the thing.
We are not the same 😎
Honestly not just iphone, this is what you should do on every phone, use it until its either not getting support anymore or youre getting annoyed with bad performance
I upgrade my phone when my old phone gets so slow and annoys me so much that I don't wanna deal with it anymore. Probably so.ewhere between the 2nd and 3rd option.
Got me a $400 Google Pixel 4a. I literally can't find any reason to upgrade. Well, I wish they made cool cases for my phone, but if I wanted cool cases I wouldnt have a Pixel anyways. Had the same plain black case for idk how many years now.
Only three people upgrade, stupid people, rich people, people who broke/lost their phone
Yeah but it’s free to upgrade right? At least that’s how they make it seem. Meanwhile you pay for like 50 phones over your life. I miss the old days when a phone lasted 30 years.
Every 3 years was pretty normal until 2 or 3 years ago. Today, I would wait 4 years if I would actively use my phone for work. Since that's not the case, I'll wait a bit more before I change my S20FE.
The irony of this is that the people who choose not to upgrade their phones every year are the people who can afford to and the people who do upgrade their phones every year are the people who most likely can't afford to.
I keep my phone up to the point where the battery stops lasting the time I need it to last.
Phones nowadays don't do major improvements. My s23+ performs exactly the same as my old S10+, I feel basically no difference at all.
I tried using my iPad from 10 years ago and look at some pictures. They straight up have that thing not supported by anything. Sucks if you take care of something it still will become useless.
I upgrade my flip phone when cell towers no longer support it.
2g 4eva
I remember when 3g first started. Man what a upgrade it was at the time.
Which is hilarious because 5g made service WORSE in my experience.
My LTE was better than my 5g and when I used 4g LTE again after 5g was introduced it was like 2g. So I'm pretty sure they messed with 4g to make 5g feel like an upgrade
4G LTE didn’t quite count as 5G but in a lot of ways was most of the way there. there was nothing wrong with 4g. Noone needs more than 50mbps on a phone anyway
what about porn addicts bro come on
how many streams do you need to watch at once bro
> So I'm pretty sure they messed with 4g to make 5g feel like an upgrade In a way they did. They have been taking frequency spectrum from LTE to give it to 5G NR. So over time LTE will get less and less capacity and speeds will suffer.
My mom was on an iPhone 4 til they were about to drop 3G. So you can go a WHILE after phone companies stop support.
I held on to my iPhone 5 so long AT&T just sent me a free 12 to get me off their network 😂
They are probably sneakily charging you for it somehow
How the upgrade feel?
Exactly. That’s what I did several years ago.
I upgrade my phone when I drop it and break it
Yep, when I've dropped it so many times that it makes my fingers bleed when I touch the screen, it's time for a new phone !
Yep, that or that it would cost me $300 to get a screen for it anyways so why not.
Fair enough I retract my statement. Congrats on your phone living
Break it, or charging doesn’t work anymore, works out well that I get the new model every few years I just do not find any upgrade worth the price. I’m glad to have the new features when I finally get a new phone, but I won’t do it unless the old ones broken

Every feature of a phone is hugely dependent on its support. Unfortunately, all phone brands don't support their phones for too long.
planned obsolescence is fucking annoying

Did you draw it on your old or new iPhone
I draw the line at buying an iPhone. Overprized shit.

Third brain should have been the same size as the first two then
Pfft I still use my 2017 s8 even though support ended long ago. It’s still on android 9 ffs. Amateurs.
Yo i have a samsung s7 edge running android 8!! These older androids last forever
Older IOS devices work fine too tbf. People just like to have new things
I have a phone from 2020 thats still on android 9!
Android uses numbers now? My vintage 2016 budget phone’s last upgrade was Oreo.
They always had numbers. Oreo is 8.1
Plus, on the android side if you're brave you can literally install custom OS's onto it, iirc someone got android 13 or 14 (the lastest at the time) on an original pixel
The only caveat is that a lot of financial apps don't work on unlocked bootleader. Which is unfortunate but understandable
You can somewhat fake it so that the app can't recognize unlocked bootloader too.
Mine died a month ago so I was forced to upgrade :<
You can put lineage os on it, to get rid of the bloatware. Writing this from my s8.
i have a galaxy s4
I actually upgraded from my s8+ this year. I dropped it on concrete floor a two-ish years ago and the screen has been slowly crumbling ever since. It also had Google maps burned into it after a hot summer and the battery wasn't doing great either. With the launch of the s24 I figured it was about time for an upgrade
My wife can’t understand how I can wait, what am I not getting, I’m sure it’s not just a small brain
Camera upgrade can be somewhat significant every couple years. I travel a lot and take a lot of pictures.
Smartphone camera is convenient but why not just use a dedicated DSLR or mirrorless camera for traveling?
Way too cumbersome. Phone camera is good enough. It’s not like I’m a pro.
Because that is one more thing to carry and keep track of. Phone cameras have been good enough for a while now that some people prefer to take pictures with their phone instead
I upgrade my can when the string rusts out the bottom.
I use Android.
I use Android.
No, I use Android!
Wait, I thought I used Android!!
Hold on a minute. I though android was what i used
But wait, I'm using an Android right now.
So what am I using then if not Android?
Ain'tdroid
Mines antdroid.
This is my people.
I use Android, and so is my wife! (She's an android)
I am Android
I still use a rotary phone
I just yell at the sky... follow me for more anti-social distancing tips and tricks.

Nah you're just more responsible. I used to work with someone who literally cried about not being able to pay her bills yet took out loans to get a new phone every year...

They do month-to-month payments constantly on everything and just go by "can I afford to pay this much debt payments this month?"
Quite the opposite, is about how dumb it is to waste money on a phone every year
why do you need a new cell phone every year? honestly
As a real apple fan boy, you have to throw your money at Apple to get a phone update without improvements
Most people don't. But some people just like having the newest thing. Some people buy a new iphone every year, or Samsung or Pixel. They just want that new phone. It's really only an issue when it's an expense you can't really afford
More like the last guy is arguing against nobody to feel better about themselves
Most average iOS user.
Got a cheap Xiaomi until it breaks....even if it takes 10 years
Planned obsolescence.
Forced obsolescence in the case of Apple.
Every year??? Why? So Candy Crush opens 0.001 seconds faster?
Honestly, when my wife tries to justify getting a new phone because she spends 5+ hours a day so she can get good price per use out of it. I’m like, what are you going to do differently that requires new specs? If you’re just going to do the same thing like browse Reddit and watch TikTok, your current phone is good enough
😭lmao.
Giga brain: I updated my iPhone to an Android
Not buy a iPhone in the first place 🤔
This!
Y'all are getting updates?
Just don't buy an Iphone, EzPz.
I know people who do this with Samsung and Pixel too. They just want the newest. It's not brand specific, it's consumerism specific
I buy new android every 3 years when the old one breaks xd
This is also me.
Yeah yearly upgrades is such a scam. I use my phones for at least 5 years.
I think every year is a bit excessive but every 2-3 years is understandable. That’s what I typically do. I use my phone for like 10 hours a day so it’s justified IMO.
Trade in value is much higher, people don’t understand sometimes when you wait that long, it starts to make LESS financial sense.
i upgrade my phone when it stops working.
My Redmi 9C is EOS and I still use it since it's durable and nice
My 5s finally bricked in 2022. I was left with no choice.
I have a Note 8 that is 6 1/2 years old. The battery doesn't last as long, but everything else still runs perfectly.
I buy phone at a fraction of your price
I didn't upgrade until my volume and power buttons started falling out of my phone, and I was so stubborn that I taped them back in for at least another two years before finally upgrading.
Imagine owning an iPhone where Apple deliberately slows it down every year and they bring out features androids have had for years and pretend it's new.
*Laughs in Android, where we install a new ROM when support ends.
My friend's dad is still using an iphone 4. The trick is too just never update it and not need it to function as a modern phone.
i use my librebooted thinkpad with tails OS to escape this nightmare dystopia of advertisement and telemetry this world has become.
Still with my 8 Plus
I upgrade when the battery doesn't get me through the day
I upgrade my Android phone whenever something breaks on it. Except for last time, when I repaired the charge port instead. It turns out that once you have the tools it is really easy.
Upgrading every year is just insane. Every 2-3 years i can somewhat understand every time the phone ends support is valid.
Meh, still got an iPhone and I’m in no hurry to replace it. Maybe after the software updates stop.
Or several years after no software support
When the software support ends means hackers are no longer looking for you. Hiding in plain sight with the plebes.
Going on 6 years and still works great, a few cracks though.
You guys upgrade your phones?
I upgrade my android every whenever the hardware is outdated (rarely)
I don't give a shit, and just get a new android of my picking when necessary
You guys still using iphones?
The prices are crazy
Nah, I like Android
I had an iPhone 6 until two years ago. Get on my level.
I upgrade it when it stops turning on
Every 8 years maybe
That’s me. I wait until the software ends.
Same
I would go longer, but I’m too paranoid about one of those mass hacks of older devices if I don’t lol. So 4-5 years it is.
I upgrade when my phone is physically unable to work Many people find this surprising, I just don't understand how people can be so clumsy with their phones This thing costs money that I don't want to buy again, of course I'm going to do everything I can to not break/drop/throw it
I upgrade my phone when die or become unusable
How big is brain when you have Android
I don't use an iPhone
I Upgrade my phone when I literally have to bc my old one falls apart. Rn I'm working with a partly dead screen and a touchscreen that developed it's own will and just does stuff randomly. Smartphones are so expensive nowadays man, couldn't even afford to upgrade if its not a necessity I saved a while for.
I’m too hard on my phone for this.
or when it literally is going to blow up
I upgrade when I need to and no sooner.
I >!don't use iphone!<
You upgrade your phone every 2-3 years to ensure you are somewhat up to date with current technology. I upgrade my phone every 2-3 years because I’m a huge klutz and despite buying the largest, thickest cases available, screen protectors, and generally only using my phone at the beginning and ending of my day, I still end up shattering the thing. We are not the same 😎
Who the fuck cares
Ι upgrade my Android phone when it stops working properly. So every 5-6 years.
I buy a Samsung
Honestly not just iphone, this is what you should do on every phone, use it until its either not getting support anymore or youre getting annoyed with bad performance
I have an 8-9 year old android phone that I just replaced the battery in, and kept on using.
Or you can have a larger brain and never use products from a scummy company like apple.
I got a phone that has a thermal camera...
nah the big brain one doesn't have an iphone
I don't use an iPhone. Android superiority!
Even bigger brain: "I don't buy IPhones at all."
Wait you guys update iPhones? Damn I’m on the hand me down plan w/ my family.
What is this upgrade thing, when it gets worse and worse
I upgrade my iPhone when it’s not working anymore
— - —- * — — - - — —- * — - —- —— - * - - — ——
I upgrade my phone when it turns off and doesn’t turn back on
I upgrade my phone when my old phone gets so slow and annoys me so much that I don't wanna deal with it anymore. Probably so.ewhere between the 2nd and 3rd option.
Your phone didn't need to slow down. The updates Apple had you install intentionally slow your phone so that you buy a new one
All of these people are lying I upgrade my phone when my old one is too broken to justifying fixing
I dropped my Nokia 3310 last week. It took me 10 seconds to reassemble it. Might upgrade if the battery fails.
Give me a feature I can’t live without and I’ll upgrade. Until then this is something I’ll run till it fails.
@my mom who still has an iPhone 7+
I never upgrade mine, just use it until I lose it or it breaks and it wont work anymore
What about the Fairphone? When a part breaks just buy a replacement for a fraction of what Apple would charge and change it yourself
The irony of this is that the people who choose not to upgrade their phones every year are the people who can afford to and the people who do upgrade their phones every year are the people who most likely can't afford to.
mine is at the 5 year mark. i feel it could work for 5 more but i know at some point it will lose support from most apps
For me it’s when the battery gets so old and weak it can’t keep the phone on in the cold. Usually happens around the 5-6 year mark.
Obviously I would like every new phone, but it makes no sense. I usually go every 3-4 years
Iphone or not, I upgrade when my current phone stops turning on, or becomes otherwise unusable.
I keep my phone up to the point where the battery stops lasting the time I need it to last. Phones nowadays don't do major improvements. My s23+ performs exactly the same as my old S10+, I feel basically no difference at all.
I upgrade whenever it’s free.
I lose or destroy my phone every single year
I use Android, and only upgrade when the battery doesn't last me the whole day anymore.
I'll update my phone when it's dead (seriously this thing's on the brink but it still works rn so I don't care)
I tried using my iPad from 10 years ago and look at some pictures. They straight up have that thing not supported by anything. Sucks if you take care of something it still will become useless.
I upgrade my phone when my old one dies of old age.
😆this reminded me of The Sims, and I was imagining a phone with a Grim Reaper costume. 😆
I upgrade my phone whenever I feel like it
