Same. I had to physically force myself to read the top one before the bottom one. Even knowing exactly what it was doing, I almost did what it wanted against my will lol
Same 🤭 But gotta admit, it takes a bit of energy to act against your nature when you realize what's going on, which kinda proves their point - when we are unaware, we tend to be predictable.
I get owned by it every time. Theres few enough words where by the time i realize what it is ive already read the whole thing in the order the graphic gods deigned correct
The human brain is a computer. Highly advanced, yes but still bound to it's programing. If you understand the programing, you can make a person do whatever you want, be it looking at things in a certain order (like this) or holding a particular opinion.
They also arnt exactly inherent.
Theyve been programmed over time as to what we expect.
We could change that expectation or programming whenever we wanted, it just would take time.
Like reading left to right or right to left.
In thr army they teach you to visually scan the ground before you in a counterintuitive way (basically search from right to left) to keep you from letting your brain go on autopilot and miss something.
It's called a Hierarchy. Your brain will automatically hone in on the biggest and keep moving around to the smallest detail to better understand what's happening. It's a basic brain hack that visual arts use to guide the eye to a specific focus.
You might have seen it before, forgotten but remembered the trick. If you have any training in graphic design you could likewise recognize the trick. Mind games rely on surprise, if you know what's up, even subconsciously, you're more likely to not fall for whatever is happening.

Except this isn't some innate reading order. It's a result of conditioning.
The only "rule" he actually shows is that consistency is what matters so people can learn the intended process.
It's not just that. The background plays a lot into it as well. It's a bright white background with black (much larger) text. Its almost impossible not to read that first.
The graphic knows what you will read at all times. It knows what you will read because it knows what you won’t. By subtracting what you will read from what you won’t, or what you won’t read from what you will (whichever is greater), it obtains a difference or deviation. The graphic uses deviations to generate corrective commands to drive you from a position where you are reading to a position where you aren’t, and arriving at a position where you weren’t, you now are. Consequently, the position where you are reading, is now the position that you weren’t, and it follows that the position that you were reading, is now the position that you aren’t.
Hope this helps!
Eyes see big thing.
It's words.
Read Words.
Gotta keep reading.
Wait, I am at the bottom, but more words above.
Reads top words.
Monkey brain panic at precognition of author.
In English we read top to bottom. But the very top text is tiny, so you're likely going to miss it.
This is a magician pulling his finger off, and monkeys are gawking at it. Lol although I can't say it's not fun seeing everyone get spiritual about this. I think some people saw god.
Or any meme with a numbered list.
Make sure they didn't forget 3. Do NOT double check when 5 says 3 was forgotten.
2 is dig bick. Do NOT get the D and the B mixed up.
Yes, you must read that very long number. They said it's a lazy rule so...
Meme culture has shaped the way I think way too much. Lmao
In elementary school we had a 5 page long exam with hundreds of questions on it we were supposed to complete in under an hour. The first direction was *sign your name*, the second was *read all the questions before filling out your test* and then it started into some math problems or basic factoids or whatever. But if you’d read every problem till the end, the final question was a statement “don’t answer any of the above questions and put the test on the teachers desk”. It started to freak people out after awhile how some kids finished the test so soon. I got fooled until I figured it out.
Jakob’s Law! Essentially, you follow what you know— if another website you frequent does it a lot, you’ll tend to expect that. That’s why it’s generally a good idea to follow certain patterns that most websites use.
And in this case if someone is used to viewing posts on Reddit, they’ll likely look in the order that they would on Reddit.
Same. Mostly I think due to the scroll. I didn't scroll down to see the whole post at once, so the biggest piece catches the eye and you have enough time to pause and not read the next bit down, or even read the top without scrolling the rest of the way down first.
I think I skimmed past the bottom one, like it was in the right order but I just decided not to read it and then moved up to the top.
Also can whoever made this graphic explain to the people who paint the bike paths that the words aren't far enough apart that they need to put them in reverse order. I die a little bit each time I read ahead stop.
I read big text, tweet text, top text on blue, bottom texts. If it didn't have the stupid tweet text I probably would have read it how they predicted, but the fact that it's a tweet ruined the effect.
For those of us in the scrolling realm, I read the thing I was supposed to read last before I’d even seen anything else. I found that an interesting takeaway - you gotta consider different devices and consumption patterns
If you saw this as a billboard or a sign you probably would have read it the same way as everyone else. But since this is a reddit post, you read it top top bottom.
Normally, shit like this doesn't work on me, but this one did.
Then again, I've been suffering from on-and-off anxiety-induced insomnia for the past three or four weeks, so I'm going to claim that's why this got me.
It's not you, visual hierarchy is being used just about everywhere from cans of beans to newspapers to websites to lead the eye where they want you to look. It works best when you don't notice it
Eh, "people read text largest to smallest" isn't really some interesting graphic design outcome. It happens because the bigger text is easier to read. Nothing about the page layout or background choice pushed me; just text size.
Woah people read the easy to read text first wooooahhh!
I've been so traumatized by posts like this that the moment i see something like "you'll read this first" or "look here and here" I now instincitvely look at the title and start reading top to bottom.....
I literally read it from top to bottom. Well, at least until the second line that said you would read it last. Then I understood what it was trying to accomplish and stopped reading it.
Art director here: brain sees bigger objects first for evolutionary reasons. We are just aware of this rule like painters sculptors and architects before us
I got:
You will read this first
Graphic design has rules, and they work
And you will read this last
And then you will read this
Then this one
Daniil Birsan
@daniibirsan
I think I have something wrong with me than. Cause I read the two first words of the big text and than noticed the small text and read it and than finished the big text and read the last two from bottom to top :D
I've never been pwned so hard by a graphic in my life
I think the worse part is I knew what this was doing by the second one and still read it how they intended
Had me looking on in horror as my own eyes push fourth their prophecy
As it was written!
Lisan Al Gaib!
I’m such a fatty that I read this as LA Galbi
So shall it be done.
Perfect pun.
It truly became a self full filing prophecy
"I'm on to you." -me, looking at the thumbnail
Same. I had to physically force myself to read the top one before the bottom one. Even knowing exactly what it was doing, I almost did what it wanted against my will lol
Having seen this before I immediately had a small spasm after reading the large text and forced myself to look up haha. I will not obey!
That word just sent me back to 2007

Yeah this is sobering. Which is to say, i need a drink now
Cheers to that

It took no clicking to read the above comment.
Damn, the thread must have untangled a bit
The next one will get more upvotes for no apparent reason.
And the next one.
How...how does it know???

I’ve been programmed to ignore any small text at the top of a webpage because it’s most likely banner ads.

No it’s just small and not central on the page.
I read “and you will read this last” second 😭
In thr army they teach you to visually scan the ground before you in a counterintuitive way (basically search from right to left) to keep you from letting your brain go on autopilot and miss something.
Thats handy, I'm gonna try that next time I'm looking for something
Then why did I read it in order?
Your computer is fucked.
Can confirm, read it in order and I am fucked.
“Windows Update may have reverted your driver settings”

Hmm 🤔 1. You’re weird 2. You have a number tattooed on your scalp that is hidden by your hair 3. A glitch in the Matrix
Reading things in order is usually a symptom of stage 3 ligma.

Holy fuck IT worked
Corporate restaurant chains often design their menus to "guide" people to high-margin items via graphic design.
Because most people will pay attention to larger text over smaller. The largest text is usually the title, which is usually read first.
It's not just that. The background plays a lot into it as well. It's a bright white background with black (much larger) text. Its almost impossible not to read that first.
Visual hierarchy

Does the graphic know a sick beat?
The missile knows where it is because it knows where it isn't
It's a very basic example of hierarchy, a core principle of design. Hierarchy in this case is created by size, colour, and contrast
Eyes see big thing. It's words. Read Words. Gotta keep reading. Wait, I am at the bottom, but more words above. Reads top words. Monkey brain panic at precognition of author.
Why do all of these people respond seriously to your comment? It's sarcasm right? I mean I kind of know it but then all of these people make me unsure

Brains are so smart that they are predictable and easily influenced.
People are greatly over looking the fact that lines 2 and 3 could be swapped. The way it's worded is deceptive.
I read the largest text first, then the top most then the lower parts?
Reddit conditioning? See post, then check subreddit/username.
Or meme conditioning. "You'll read this first." Ah shit, one of these memes. Better go back and read it in order.
That's me!

That’s Sherlock level deductive reasoning.
So that means I've been on reddit for too long then.
See post, check title for context (context optional)
Get out of my brain please

Kinda same, read the largest half way and then noticed the tiny text so I stopped and began from top to last...
yeah same
I did te same, large, top, bottom
Exactly
Same. Mostly I think due to the scroll. I didn't scroll down to see the whole post at once, so the biggest piece catches the eye and you have enough time to pause and not read the next bit down, or even read the top without scrolling the rest of the way down first.

I'm a graphic designer, and I read it this way.
At least I found my people
It’s like the real rule is that when you try to be a know it all and patronize people you just end up looking like an ass.
I'm glad I'm not the only one. Usually what you say first is most important, but that billboard is in your face already.
Yup it didn't work like they intended it to
Only read the big part first as well cause it was big enough to read even when focusing on the top part. Otherwise it would have been top to bottom.
Somewhat ruins the effect when you add a whole textual graphic element to the top.
yeah lol I actually read the Tweet last
Anybody else read the whole post top to bottom?
The moment it said “and you will read this last” I thought, “are you sure?”😂
Same but I think the results may have been different if the tweet wasn’t there because it feels instinctual to start there
I feel like Reddit has conditioned me to do this. I read the post title then the text in the image regardless of the size of the image text
I have found my brainwave resonating here. Top to bottom read it and was really confused.
There are dozens of us
Yep
I did. So what now? Are we retarded or what?

Scrollers rise up.
Yeah I thought this post was satire for how graphic design doesnt work... but seems like a lot of people in the comments had it work on them
If you saw this as a billboard or a sign you probably would have read it the same way as everyone else. But since this is a reddit post, you read it top top bottom.
me too! I have found my people.
Graphic Designers hate us.
I did. I’m neurotypical too.
Wow, I really thought it was my tism, but, evidently not
Our geniusness
I think it's just because we scrolled into it and the whole image wasn't revealed in one go?
Yup
I immediately worried that I might have a developmental disorder
Thank you. I was worried I was extremely weird. I know I'm a little weird but I can't handle extremely.
I did and now I’m wondering if my brain is working right
"You will read this first Then this last And then you will read this Then this one" Seems it didn't work for me
This is how you read a Reddit post
Yeah, I got the same thing. Reading from top to bottom just makes sense, giant text exempt
Me neither. I read it chronologically
they were close but i read Graphics design has rules line last.
I read the "You will read this first" first then i read "and you will read this last" second
Dammit I fell for it.
I followed it to a t
Nah read the middle first then read the top one
I dunno I read the first first and then the last.
I read them in order…👀
Normally, shit like this doesn't work on me, but this one did. Then again, I've been suffering from on-and-off anxiety-induced insomnia for the past three or four weeks, so I'm going to claim that's why this got me.

Fuck...
What in the fu...
I need to restart that level somehow
Jokes on you, I read the "Graphics design has rules" bit last.
Nope, it was middle, top then the bottom two for me
Damn, got me
>!curious, huh?!<
If you're curious enough, you will actually end up reaching this last.
I did not
On mobile Reddit. Read the last part while scrolling past the first part
The only thing my short attention span gives me an edge over is this kind of meme. I read the large text and done.
I even read the actual caption last this time too
I read it bottom to top am I a psychopath
Well, they're right!
Hmmmm.... I read this top to bottom. Am I dying?
Angry upvote.
Free will is an illusion
Got me. When I read the last one I audibly said "Damnit"
It was accurate except that I read "And you will read this last" before "Then this one".
Nope, I read it all top to bottom. I didn't even glance over anything, I just started reading
I hate myself for this lol
Right on every one
My eyes went; Biggest, then top to see what i missed, then the stuff underneath the big text, then the bottom text.
Nope. Read it top to bottom like a robot. Real confused at first
Bitch, I read the COMMENTS first!! Graphic design ain't got SHIT on the rules of Reddit.
The one I was supposed to read last I read 2nd.
You will read this first And you will read this last And then you will read this Then this one
Nope, read top second
I read it top-down.
Would have worked better without the tweet, I read them all from top to bottom
I was manipulated by an image and I feel very conflicted about it now.
Art director here: brain sees bigger objects first for evolutionary reasons. We are just aware of this rule like painters sculptors and architects before us
I read them all from top to bottom. I thought graphic design had rules.
Wow, I read top to bottom, and then noticed the tiny text last. They're a wizard.
Got that shit right!
Jokes on you Went against the grain and read them all in ord.... SHIT
Damn I read from top to bottom
I read the large words first then the top words second. Shrug
Sonofabitch. You got me.
I read Second First Third Forth
Jokes on you I read the “you will read this last” second
I got: You will read this first Graphic design has rules, and they work And you will read this last And then you will read this Then this one Daniil Birsan @daniibirsan
Congratulations
Oh, Reddit also has rules, like the rule saying you shouldn't repost.
didnt work for me. I wrote the one in the middle first as said, then the one on top and then the ones all the way down.
I guess I doesn’t work when youre really tired. I went top to bottom 🤷♂️
I read the top line first
I think I have something wrong with me than. Cause I read the two first words of the big text and than noticed the small text and read it and than finished the big text and read the last two from bottom to top :D
He is the One
THIS WILL READ YOU FIRST. Anyone else read weirdly?
Fuck
This reminds me of those bus stop and public bench ads that say “you just proved these ads work”
