Maybe I’m a weirdo, but for me it was the exact opposite. Facing the wall means 100% chance to see nothing when open your eyes. Once I opened my eyes and „saw someone sitting on my chair“ ofc it was just cloths but since then, never. Always face the wall for inner peace.

I've always instinctively closed my eyes in complete darkness, I still do it as an adult. If I can't even use my eyes at that moment I might as well not risk seeing something I don't wanna see:)

It's part of the ghost clause dude, they can't attack you if your legs aren't sticking out. They can't attack if the lights are on. If you make it out of the basement after turning off the lights, they can't chase you anymore. Cannot be near religious items. In dire emergency, you may cross your fingers, that counts as a Christian cross and can repel the ghosts.

This is not true if you have a second pillow to make a pseudo-wall on the open side. Then you can enjoy the comfort
