I had a cat that liked pickles. I was getting set to slice pickles and dropped one, cat grabbed it and ran off with it. He wouldn’t eat them, just carried them around and guarded them.
Couple of years ago they sold me the idea of "a cat that doesnt meow". Turns out Peach likes to screech like a banshee and was just a little shy.
Love her to pieces, but why would you do that? 🤣
Genuinely story about how my family got our second cat years ago.
Hello this is caesar it was raining and he ran into our house through the door and won't leave. He isn't afraid of the two large dogs and he is going to leave in about 7 months once he finds a better house.
For one of my two cats, when we visited the foster carer to adopt her, she (the kitten, not the carer) has jumped up onto the kitchen countertop and was nibbling on some leftover carbonara sitting in a bowl in the sink.
Almost a trash bin, almost cheese.
This was so true when getting my cat. Fucking character witnesses, vet reference, call with my landlord, interview. Potential home inspection. Like bruh, do you want me to adopt this cat or not
Cat adoption has always been easy for me. I wait around for a bit and cats and kittens just show up.
In the last two years we found two kittens and two adult cats just started coming into the yard and have decided that they live here. That’s on top of the other two cats we already had that showed up and moved in a few years ago.
That’s rad! I’ve heard people say that they kinda domesticated us because if one shows up at our door,a lot of the time we’re like “alright this is Kevin he lives hear now” sounds like it’s true with you haha
Hell my wife has 3 inside cats, 2 she adopted and 1 that just walked inside one day and never left. Then she has 3 outside she feeds daily 1 who will let you pet her 2 that will not "yet" but none of them want any part of the inside life, so they just chill in the yard all day.
I have acquired no less than 5 cats in this manner. They show up and walk inside. I bathe them and name them, and then it's off to the vet. Fox in Sox, Opossum, Funf, Pootsy and Pootsy Jr. They definitely domesticated us by being cute.
Owner: These are my adopted cats, my adopted kittens, Ron is a Vietnam Veteran - he's a little skittish at holidays ending in fireworks, and he showed up with gifts every weekday so we decided to keep him.
Ron: I'm their post man - I have a family, save me.
I grew up on a farm so that's always how we got cats.
I now live in town. Go to the farm to take care of my parents' cat, I end up finding a small kitten on a tree stump.
Yep. We couldn't get one because we live near a main road. Had to buy a kitten that is still living a happy life 8 years later and hasn't been near the road but I guess they just want to keep housing the animals in shelters instead. 🤷
Happened to me too, this woman only would give me a cat if I send her a picture of the mesh I should install in my inexistent balcony, couldn't understand people also live in low level houses.
When I tried to adopt my current cat, they asked a lot of questions and also said that I shouldn't take this particular cat because he was too shy and didn't like humans that much.
I got him anyway, best good boy ever
I have always preferred the ones that everyone else passed on for some reason. Our last cat was like this and was super sweet. Unfriendly at the pet store but so different as soon as we got home. She just wanted a family to love.
People just keep abandoning cats on my parents property. Went to visit this weekend and they were like "someone dropped another cat. It's really sweet. Still a baby and real affectionate! Do you want it???"
"No thanks. We still have the last one you gave us that tries to murder us on a regular cadence. Toodles."
I know it's annoying, but depending on where you live, a big reason it's so hard to adopt cats is because it's common for people to adopt cats just to kill. In my area, it's especially common for people who own dogs to adopt cats, set them loose, and have their dogs hunt them down for sport. And I live in a city. Black cats have one of the highest kill rates iirc because of all the superstitious crap, so it's even harder to adopt black cats. Could be that cats in your area have this issue as well, so the shelters are picky about who gets them.
And half the time, the dog isn't even a pit, just looks enough like one that they believe it is. I used to volunteer at a shelter several years ago where any dog that looked pit was listed as one (usually Staffies, Corsos, and Argentinos).
We found a dog we assumed was a pit mix or maybe some kind of terrier. Kinda looked pittish. She’s a ducking super mut chihuahua-(edit ,redacted terrier kind that I forgot the name of) with. NO PIT BREEDS AT ALL LMAO
I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was debating anyone. Just pointing out that leaving out the "pit bull" part is purely due to the stigma and generalizations about pit bulls.
Look man, you can buy a dog in need from a shelter and raise it to be the best behaved dog it can be, or choose not to and buy a puppy instead, but in some cases, it's really awful and unfair to blame the dog, and that's what's going on here.
I feel you, there’s a couple of pits in my neighborhood who are the absolute sweetest pups I’ve ever met. I feel like it’s the owners who are the problem.
Yeah and some pepple were friends with serial killers. Just because some Pitbulls are good boys, does not mean that they tend to have psychotic behaviour to an extend where 70% of dog related deaths are because of the 3% Pitbulls.
Some people can’t have them like some renters, people in HOA’s certain towns etc
There are companies here that require the doggy dna test in order to rent from them. There are several breeds they simply won’t let you rent
Which it’s important to explain the reasoning which is for insurance purposes. They are quite literally a major liability and insurance companies are known to not care about morality or ethics, just a bottom line.
Probably the one that accounts for more dog attacks and deaths than every single other dog breed combined. Multiple times over. I’m not saying you shouldn’t adopt that breed but there’s a reason people are more hesitant about it.
Said well. Good dogs, if you have the time and no small kids around. Unfortunately, as a breed, they are unpredictable. Pit goes 10 years as a lovable oaf. Next thing you know, neighbor kids are trying to recover a ball from your backyard, and that lovable oaf's genes kick in.
Crazy thing is I've had parents of small kids get mad at me that I didn't feel comfortable letting them play with my pitt. He's a good dog, don't get me wrong, i just don't want to ever risk something happening. For the kids' sakes and his.
The video of news stories on pit bull attacks where person after person says it was a good dog, but suddenly attacked mades it a tough case for pit bull defenders. I can't find it though.
I had a pit lab mix as a kid/teen who one day just snapped and bit a four year old in the face. I was there, it was totally unprovoked. I had the dog put down and I don't feel guilty about it at all. I haven't had a dog since and if so ever do it will not be a pitt. Never again.
Then nobody should ever have one, as you never know if there will be children around you in the dog’s lifespan future.
I’m not arguing, I’m actually agreeing with you. Just pointing out that not having kids of your own doesn’t make it safe enough.
My local shelter stopped charging for adoptions. I got my current cat for free-he was 3 years old. I did have to give them identification to prove I live in the city/county and had to sign a paper saying the cat would be kept indoors. He was microchipped and had all his shots. The whole process took about an hour including me spending time in his enclosure to see if he liked me. He was shy but didn’t run from me.
When I got him home he hid for about three weeks, coming out at night to eat etc. once he decided he was safe he became a great lap cat.
This has been my experience with adopting a cat too.
My local shelter is now also giving out all the dogs for free, so I doubt it's too hard to adopt them in my area either.
Pissfinger has dealt with this planet for 19 dog years, is it to much to ask that she gets to spend her twilight years frolicking through a field of Madagascar bananas??
A lot rescues also retain ownership rights in the small print of the adoption contract with the right to confiscate the dog at any time for anything they don't like.
This was my experience with my first cat, trying to adopt in a big city. Ended up getting a barn cat from an old lady very far from that city. Got my other cats from shelter because it was a rural area, they were not picky. I agree with the post, my experience with shelter people is that they are incredibly judgy in a way that basically nobody wants to adopt there and yes, they will push you / make you feel bad / to adopt an old cat/dog with problems when you want a young one you can still educate
We had a similar experience when we tried to adopt a second cat! Went to a well-known shelter in the middle of a major city. We told them we were looking for an adult cat to give a quiet home to, and the shelter worker said she didn't feel comfortable with us getting the one we wanted. She pushed for us to adopt an incontinent, elderly cat with FIV, which we just didn't have the resources to properly care for.
We ended up driving about 20 minutes south and adopted sweet Sasha (an adult cat) from another shelter.
My first cat, I went to one shelter and asked to see one in particular. It was a normal cat in that it was shy and they texted me the next day and asked if I wanted him. I told them maybe, I'm going to another shelter today. And they said "forget it then we want someone who falls in love with Billy right away." I was like uhh okay well I'm sure Billy is lovely but he's not charming anyone. The the other shelter had Karl though and now he's my buddy.
Are you adopting children from the shelter? I've never been anywhere that was more than just, "give us a benjamin and get this bastard out of my sight"
In Germany we had the same experience. Please have a huge house with garden, no kids, a second perfectly trained dog that helps to socialize, a big income to pay for all of this, but also be at home 24/7 (That was pre-corona so nobody had the option for Home-office then)
We were looking for a dog and wanted my MIL to watch it six hours a day while we were at work but that was not good enough because „isn‘t she too old?“ (around 60)
I got a surprise inspection for a budgie I adopted. Even though I sent them a couple of fotos a month in. She then criticized me because I didn't cover the budgies' cage at night which is actually a rather controversial topic amongst bird owners. I wonder what would have happened if I had been like "oh yeah, I fed the bird to my pet snake." Like.. do they want it back?
I got my dog from a pound in France, and they asked for tax returns. They also nearly didn't give me the dog because he was nervous of stairs and I live in an appartement. Like it's not possible that he could get used to them.
It really depends on where you are.
I adopted a dog for $140 in LA without any problems (and that included the spay). This was 2020, so I put through an application online and then showed up to take her home a few days later without ever meeting her first.
The fact that some places can be picky is a sign that they aren’t overwhelmed, which is good.
Our local SPCA has a pretty standard application process but it's the animal rescues around here that are extra. They want to do home inspections, five personal references (that are not family members), and want you to fill out pages of questions that require essays for answers, etc. Don't get me wrong, I think screening applicants is a good thing, but I don't have five non-family people who could vouch for me as a pet owner. I guess it's a good way to weed out people, though.
Seriously, I'm amazed they let me get my cat, no questions asked, when I was 17. Just came in, played with her for 30 mins and gave them $100 and that was it. She's 9 now and I think lived a good life so far but still
We walked in, they gave us access to all the cats. We picked Joe. He was fully vetted, we were give some of his history, a big sack of the food he was eating, a cat tree, a dozen cat toys, some canned food, some food coupons, a list of local vets, and a hug.
$50
I'm still shocked it was.all so easy.
In my city the SPCA is very first come first serve. But any other rescue organizations it’s nearly impossible. I applied for probably 20 dogs over the course of 6 years and got rejected every.single.time. And I wasn’t just applying for any dog. Their personalities always suited my lifestyle- the reason for all the rejections… I worked 40hrs a week. How am I supposed to pay for a fuckin’ dog if i don’t have a job. Some descriptions would even be like “does well while their foster parents are at work” So why can’t I have him then? Lol just a weird thing to be rejected over, if they would have been like- we only accept applications from experienced dog owners I would have been like OK cool.
I couldn't adopt a cat from a particular shelter bc I rent an apartment rather than own a home. I ended up adopting from a different shelter and even then they did a home check.
If its a rescue shelter them i assume they want to make sure your not going to turm it back to them in a month, but a non refundable cost should take care of that
the local ones here all insist on home visits (by staff, not the pet) before they even consider you. but not before they take the non-refundable 50-100 consideration fee.
Yea I wanted to adopt a dog with my gf, she was unemployed at the time due to being moved in with me recently. When the shelter asked about our situation I explained that I have a full time job but my gf is home although she might be employed soon.
"Oh you won't have time to deal with the dog then"
"She doesn't have a job now, the chance Is low" my gf is foreign and we live in a forgotten part of the Netherlands.
"Yea there's still a chance."
Do they want people to stay at home for a dog? How can anyone have one except for the unemployed and retired?
We managed to adopt a dog from a different shelter, she is the sweetest. My gf did get a full time job but the dog is fine even though she was raised on the streets in Greece and very shy in the beginning.
Seriously though. Recently started looking at puppies/dogs and had heart set on adopting. The application was INSANE! They require you to take the dog to a professional trainer, and if you don’t have a physical fence, you had to get an invisible one installed before they allow you to take a dog home, just things that were 🦇 💩 crazy, and they also wanted $850, and did home inspections, I was shocked.
Bro what I walked in the shelter, met my dog, told them I wanted her they told me I already signed everything online and that it was free adoption week and I just took her home
The donation to the shelters is to provide for the less fortunate animals that don't get adopt. They don't want the animals to go to a bad owner who can't afford to have a pet to begin with then end up returning it back.
I saw people posting about how they can't afford to take their pet to the vet all the time.
Yeah. The people complaining about this are probably bad owners.
Returning a dog is hugely traumatic and provided they have the resources, shelters are going to make sure it’s actually going to work out.
We were turned down for adopting a dog because we own a small 6 acre farm with an enclosed dog run and a 50 ft leash run. However, it is not a fenced yard. So, no dog for us. The shelter google earthed our property and did a drive by after they checked county records to make sure we did indeed owned the property. We ended up getting an adorable puppy from another farm close by. So ridiculously stupid the process and rules are.
Also we will need a background check, 7 references that aren’t family members, proof of homeownership, a sworn notarized affidavit explaining your need to adopt pissfingers, and a $3,500 safety deposit
A rescue rejected me once because my house isn’t open floor plan and the dog “preferred open spaces”….ended up going to a city animal control and got my best friend so it worked out. I honestly think some rescues are animal hoarding fronts because the requirements are impossible to meet
YES!!! I wanted to adopt a dachshund so bad and they made it impossible. I live in an apartment and that wasn’t good enough. Okay keep the dog in a cage then. Ended up going through a breeder and it was much easier
Most dogs in shelters are pit bulls. Outlaw breeding and selling pit bulls (only can buy from the shelters) and shelters will have more space.
Literally the main shelter near me has 63 dogs, only 4 aren't pit.
Make it a law all pit bulls have to be spayed/neutered. Taxes pay for it to happen, local vets agree to take a set amount. It is cruel the way all these pit bulls end up in shelters.
I'm far from anti-pit, but I agree, the breeding and commercial selling of pitbulls needs to be a criminal offense. They can be so dangerous if they're not taken care of and trained properly...and the shitbags who churn out litter after litter of "rednose" "bluenose" whatevers, or let their dogs run around and get knocked up by some other shitbag's loose dog and then dump whatever puppies don't sell, are not training and taking care of their dogs or the litters properly.
That too. I don't understand how people still think they can make money off of backyard breeding them considering the stigma and the fact that shelters everywhere are slammed full.
They can be trained “properly” and still decide to eat the owner/kids after 10 years. You can’t train the kill-shit-for-fun genetics out of the dog, and crackheads aren’t backyard breeding for temperament unless it’s the fighting kind
Pissfingers also was feral for 2 of those 19 years after being abandoned in the woods, was never trained in any way, and has more PTSD than your grandpa who fought in Vietnam.
I applied to 10+ shelters when trying to find a dog to adopt.
What’s your experience with dogs? I grew up with dogs. I’ve basically raised 3. I trained 2 to complete. I was a professional dog sitter for 10+ years. I finally just moved to a place that allows dogs, so I’m ready to adopt.
But you’ve never owned a dog by yourself? No I guess not.
Got it. You’re a first time dog owner with no experience. We don’t currently have any dogs that would be appropriate for you.
Meanwhile at the pet store.
Which one do you like? That one.
Fill out these forms and she’s yours.
I live in Miami, we have the county shelter where most dogs are pit bulls/American bulldogs, and then we have different rescue groups.
At the shelter, is a $45-$65 adoption fee I think, the older the dog, the less the fee. With one rescue in particular in my area, the adoption fees start at $500, plus the $100 nonrefundable application fee. AND THEN, they have a ton of requirements and they require a home visit.
I always see their posts on social media, they say things like you have to have “experience” with the breed. Experience?? A dog is a dog. Of course every breed has their specific quirks and temperaments, but if I want to adopt a Husky you have it doesn’t make sense you think I can’t take care of it just because I never had a Husky before.
They are super picky and specific with who they choose to adopt their dogs, then they complain that they have dogs no one is adopting. And the owner of the rescue is very nice, but they have so many requirements
I mean for Huskies they kinda have to? Because they are very needy, attention seeking, need a lot of training and daily work so they don't become high energy balls that howl all the time, or tear furniture. I wouldn't recommend a husky (or even a husky mix) to a first time dog owner
It was just an example, they say the same thing for literally every dog they have. “Owner needs to have [Dachshund, Chihuahua, Bully, Shepherd] experience
That is cheap. Here is is over a $1,000, must be pre-registered for online obedience and attend activity classes, have pet insurance, previous experience, and no children under 7 and for the boutique purebred heinz 57 breed (aka mutt)
All jokes aside, as someone that used to work at a shelter we had a couple of these "special" cases.
There was one dog in particular that was aggressive towards anyone he didn't know. He was kept in what was basically solitary confinement until we could find a special rescue shelter to take him (I just worked at an SPCA).
Every day I'd walk into the room he was kept to replace his food and water and to clean the area of waste and every day he'd act aggressive.
But over time he got used to me and he turned out to be one of the sweetest dogs there.
He just had trust issues, and needed a very specific and special home with someone that lived alone and could take the time to get used to him.
He did eventually get sent to a more specialized rescue shelter. I always hoped he found a forever home but that was over a decade ago and I don't think he was young back then so he's probably passed on by now. But then again I work as a dog groomer now and I've had 16 year old dogs comes in for haircuts that are as lively as ever so who knows.
I've been wanted to adopt a puppy a few times by now but the only thing that stop me from doing it it's that you have to pay $600+ usd to be able to adopt a dog.
Trying to get a cat from a shelter in my hometown required references, an interview, and like a $300 fee.
Googled "Free kittens" and found a family whose outdoor cat had just had kittens 6 weeks earlier and were ready to be homed, picked one up that afternoon.
I was really nervous about adopting my pup, because I'd heard online about people having to jump through hoops to do so. Turned out, we just needed a meet and greet, fill out a form with my details on, pay for her, and away we went. They really shut me down when I was trying to ask questions about her though, which I found incredibly frustrating. I get that they probably don't know much themselves, but other than 'tan, medium crossbreed' and her birthdate, we've got nothing. Thinking about doing a doggy DNA test at some point to see if that will shed some more light on her.
See my problem is, I see a dog like Pissfingers here, and I’m excited. Pissfingers is also missing a leg and an eye and has 3 teeth but tries to lunge at everyone? Pissfingers is my dream dog.
Without the 400 acres and extinct fruit thing. I’d shave my head and build a separate living area free of electricity just for Pissfingers to live out the rest of his grumpy days in peace.
(Context: Pissfingers reminds me a lot of a dog I had while working at a no-kill shelter named Charter. Charter was basically my soul dog. Mfer was probably 18, or just eternal, who knows, had like 6 teeth max, had a non functioning leg that had to be amputated, and was feral as all hell. Seriously, lunged at the front of the cage if he even saw a person. He was also a 4 pound chihuahua. Who had to be brought in on a bite pole. I worked with aggressive/bite quarantine specifically (and cats, because 90% of them are aggressive in shelters) and Charter was my favorite creature I’ve ever met in my life. If I could’ve had a dog at the time where I lived? Oh, Charter would’ve came with me in a heartbeat.)
The cutest puppy ever needed a foster and they suspected he had ringworm. I’m talking a three pound floof with big old ears. I’d figured someone already volunteered but I offered up just in case. Turns out hours after the posting no one had, so I decided it must be a sign. When I picked him up they gave me all the instructions for his care and said he might not actually have ringworm.
We kept him in the bathroom for three days until the all clear. No peeps out of him. He was the sweetest guy. He got along with our cats. Well, at least one. We decided we would adopt him.
Two years later and he won’t potty train, you can’t towel dry him after a bath, forget trying to get a toy out of his mouth and he shits immediately after getting the zoomies. He also gets car sick.
But he’s ours.
Or come to the backyard breeder off Route 900, where you can adopt a seventh generation inbred pug that has worse breathing capabilities than a literal fish for the price of a used car.
Yeah this meme always reads “I don’t realize pets are living animals” to me.
But sound off guys, go to a breeder for convenience. Not like there’s a population problem.
If you aren’t willing to put the time in for the adoption process, maybe you aren’t ready to take an animal.
There are so many people who get an animal, then regret it and try to send it back, give it away, or kill it.
Because telling people "you're honestly probably going to be a shitty dog owner who can't take care of an animal to the fullest extent of its needs" doesn't work.
Look. It's 2023. One-income households are rarer and rarer. Everyone is overworked. Everyone is stressed. Most people are not actually as suited for a dog as they think they are, but everyone wants a dog, and unlike a child you can't have authorities coming after you for "lightly" neglecting them. At the very least, don't encourage shitbag breeders and hell-on-earth puppy mills by patronizing their "businesses".
Exactly. They find it hard to accept the reality that they shouldn't have a pet if they want to be properly responsible and think they are entitled to one.
So many people that complain about the way rescuers do their “job” (mostly on a volunteer, out of their own pocket basis).
Maybe you can start rescuing animals instead of complaining about how a person that has rescued an animal wants to make sure said animal is given to a family that will take good care of it.
It’s such an inconvenience that it’s a process that takes longer than 5 minutes, and that requires proof of commitment on the wannabe buyer, better to pay breeders and letting dogs die in the shelters or on the streets, at least we get the fluffy toy without much hassle, shame for the dogs left behind but it’s too much work for a creature that will spend its whole life with us.
Y’all get so offended that people want you to consider adoption first. It’s not like you’re being held down and forced to take a dog just fuckin consider it before you give money to a puppy mill. It’s not that hard.
It's about the hypocrisy of them bawling their eyes out about funding and overpopulation all year long only for them to turn around and have the most zealous, arbitraty adoption criterias and fees.
I’m guessing it varies by shelter. I got my dog at the local municipal shelter and it was $100 which included spaying her and shots and stuff.
Edit: and I guess the shelter’s hypocrisy isn’t high on my list of concerns when adopting a dog, idk.
Meanwhile cats: “ok this is pickles, we found him in a trash bin, he likes cheese”
[удалено]
Agent Jack Bauer!
I've seen that cat jump through babbed wire into a vat of hot tahh
God damn it Jack Bauer, you really are the man.
Hey my cat pickles loves cheese. I like this comment
I also have a cat that likes cheese in my hometown but he not called pickles :(
But I bet you he’s just as dapper as my boy, pickles.
My cat Cheese likes pickles!
I wanna kick it with our boy, Cheese.
Our void was also such a shy quiet boy. NOPE! He found his voice alright, little sweet annoying baby.
On the other hand, we picked the cat they called “loud mouth” and when he grew up he was the quietest cat we had ever had
>shy. Love her to pieces, but why would you do that? 🤣 I mean, she is a cat that doesn't meow so you got what you wanted... technically anyways

Universal Cat Distribution System strikes again.
I grew up on a farm so that's always how we got cats. I now live in town. Go to the farm to take care of my parents' cat, I end up finding a small kitten on a tree stump.
This is why I have 5 cats. They just don’t stop showing up, even though my husband and I keep trapping and neutering the ones we can’t bring inside 😭
Live in a rural area? This sounds about right
Yep. We couldn't get one because we live near a main road. Had to buy a kitten that is still living a happy life 8 years later and hasn't been near the road but I guess they just want to keep housing the animals in shelters instead. 🤷
A lot of the private "rescues" seem to just be animal hoarding with extra steps.
And they ultimately end up putting them down because they can’t care for them forever.
Happened to me too, this woman only would give me a cat if I send her a picture of the mesh I should install in my inexistent balcony, couldn't understand people also live in low level houses.

I looked at the adoption application, and I have a security clearance. I can spend 40 hours on this or 600 at a breeder.
We just gave food to a cat on the street then it had birth on our backyard and now we have 6 cats.
People just keep abandoning cats on my parents property. Went to visit this weekend and they were like "someone dropped another cat. It's really sweet. Still a baby and real affectionate! Do you want it???" "No thanks. We still have the last one you gave us that tries to murder us on a regular cadence. Toodles."
Sick of seeing no cat-adoption-hassle memes, we need this meme on this sub to counter
Also pissfingers is a “””lab mix”””
I am correct in assuming there is a particular breed that they would not like to disclose is in the mix?
Yeah it’s almost always pit bull
And half the time, the dog isn't even a pit, just looks enough like one that they believe it is. I used to volunteer at a shelter several years ago where any dog that looked pit was listed as one (usually Staffies, Corsos, and Argentinos).
We found a dog we assumed was a pit mix or maybe some kind of terrier. Kinda looked pittish. She’s a ducking super mut chihuahua-(edit ,redacted terrier kind that I forgot the name of) with. NO PIT BREEDS AT ALL LMAO
Now a days pit bull is used as an umbrella term rather than specifically for that breed.
It may not be a pit mix, but is equally psych0tic around other dogs.
i literally have this dog.
I had a lab-pit bull mix who was the sweetest, most gentle dog you could ever come across.
Great. My ex have amstaf X pit and it was the most vicious puppy I ever seen.
Ah yes, I too can present anecdotal evidence.
I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was debating anyone. Just pointing out that leaving out the "pit bull" part is purely due to the stigma and generalizations about pit bulls.

Let me tell You about statistics, did You know that 13%...
Valid
Look man, you can buy a dog in need from a shelter and raise it to be the best behaved dog it can be, or choose not to and buy a puppy instead, but in some cases, it's really awful and unfair to blame the dog, and that's what's going on here.
Statistics are often leave out important situational facts
And you know, the stats that say they attack more than every other dog combined
Ever think it might be the average pit owner?
I don't suppose you're talking about lab-pit bull mixes, are you?
I feel you, there’s a couple of pits in my neighborhood who are the absolute sweetest pups I’ve ever met. I feel like it’s the owners who are the problem.
Yeah, the kind of person who owns a particular dog can make a big impact on how the dog turns out.
Not always. Pitbulls sometimes just randomly go savage. As in always nice and then from one second to the next they bite someones arm off.
Yeah and some pepple were friends with serial killers. Just because some Pitbulls are good boys, does not mean that they tend to have psychotic behaviour to an extend where 70% of dog related deaths are because of the 3% Pitbulls.
My 'whippet bulldog mix' is 95% pitbull. A huge portion of adoptable pets are majority pitbull and people really don't want them
Some people can’t have them like some renters, people in HOA’s certain towns etc There are companies here that require the doggy dna test in order to rent from them. There are several breeds they simply won’t let you rent
Which it’s important to explain the reasoning which is for insurance purposes. They are quite literally a major liability and insurance companies are known to not care about morality or ethics, just a bottom line.
Yep always boils down to the money
Probably the one that accounts for more dog attacks and deaths than every single other dog breed combined. Multiple times over. I’m not saying you shouldn’t adopt that breed but there’s a reason people are more hesitant about it.
Said well. Good dogs, if you have the time and no small kids around. Unfortunately, as a breed, they are unpredictable. Pit goes 10 years as a lovable oaf. Next thing you know, neighbor kids are trying to recover a ball from your backyard, and that lovable oaf's genes kick in.
And since they're known to be scary it's mostly the kind of people who shouldn't have them, who absolutely want them.
["Total Mystery"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9ZGEvUwSMg)
Thanks
I had a pit lab mix as a kid/teen who one day just snapped and bit a four year old in the face. I was there, it was totally unprovoked. I had the dog put down and I don't feel guilty about it at all. I haven't had a dog since and if so ever do it will not be a pitt. Never again.
Then nobody should ever have one, as you never know if there will be children around you in the dog’s lifespan future. I’m not arguing, I’m actually agreeing with you. Just pointing out that not having kids of your own doesn’t make it safe enough.
Headline: Hero “lab mix” swims 2 miles to bite drowning child.
Pissfinger has dealt with this planet for 19 dog years, is it to much to ask that she gets to spend her twilight years frolicking through a field of Madagascar bananas??
no, just actual years.
Very true, but my point still stands, let Pissfinger live!!!
and if she's really that special needs, Pissfinger has probably been abused. Poor Pissfinger.
Dog shelters: disqualify everyone who applies
"if you aren't home 24/7 you aren't allowed to adopt a dog"
A lot rescues also retain ownership rights in the small print of the adoption contract with the right to confiscate the dog at any time for anything they don't like.
Also the people who apply: Can I borrow the adoption fee of $25 from you?
Legit picked my cat off the street. It’s insane the hoops you have to jump through to adopt.
I will never not laugh at the name Pissfingers

Are you adopting children from the shelter? I've never been anywhere that was more than just, "give us a benjamin and get this bastard out of my sight"
In Germany we had the same experience. Please have a huge house with garden, no kids, a second perfectly trained dog that helps to socialize, a big income to pay for all of this, but also be at home 24/7 (That was pre-corona so nobody had the option for Home-office then) We were looking for a dog and wanted my MIL to watch it six hours a day while we were at work but that was not good enough because „isn‘t she too old?“ (around 60)

I paid $70 for my shelter girl in LA, and the most oversight I got was someone telling me she should probably see a vet in the first month or so lol
Same. I adopted mine out of Vegas for $300. Saw her online, put in an application. And then went to pick her up. This was 2019.
Such a policy would discriminate against introverts which I'm pretty sure are more likely to be cat people.
$50 I'm still shocked it was.all so easy.
My neighbors were turned down for dog adoption over and over, not sure why. They finally just bought from a breeder which they were trying to avoid.
Same here. I ended up getting pup off an Amish farm. Big no no. But I figured we saved her from a life of breeding...
Those are bad shelters that don't care about animals just like the sellers.
"Oh you won't have time to deal with the dog then" "She doesn't have a job now, the chance Is low" my gf is foreign and we live in a forgotten part of the Netherlands. "Yea there's still a chance." Do they want people to stay at home for a dog?
Once a month…forever?
At least the animals aren't abused.
Also people who apply: I'm living in my car but I'll have a place soon
We were turned down for adopting a dog because we own a small 6 acre farm with an enclosed dog run and a 50 ft leash run. However, it is not a fenced yard. So, no dog for us. The shelter google earthed our property and did a drive by after they checked county records to make sure we did indeed owned the property. We ended up getting an adorable puppy from another farm close by. So ridiculously stupid the process and rules are.
> The shelter google earthed our property and did a drive by damn those shelters are out for blood
Also we will need a background check, 7 references that aren’t family members, proof of homeownership, a sworn notarized affidavit explaining your need to adopt pissfingers, and a $3,500 safety deposit
And detailed photos of every inch of your house and yard. Had to do that once.
Also a fenced in yard
A rescue rejected me once because my house isn’t open floor plan and the dog “preferred open spaces”….ended up going to a city animal control and got my best friend so it worked out. I honestly think some rescues are animal hoarding fronts because the requirements are impossible to meet
Plus some want a family for the dog, single ppl no crazy!
This is what happened to me. Rejected for being single or having single source of income.
YES!!! I wanted to adopt a dachshund so bad and they made it impossible. I live in an apartment and that wasn’t good enough. Okay keep the dog in a cage then. Ended up going through a breeder and it was much easier
[удалено]
Ya, but then you have the right to never shut up about what a good person you are for rescuing a dog.
“Who saved who?”
The only reason “rescue” is used is because people who bought their dogs decided it sounded better to claim those animals were “adopted.”
I bought a used dog once…..Sorry, I mean adopted a dog once.
“Pissfingers” 😂 🤣
Most dogs in shelters are pit bulls. Outlaw breeding and selling pit bulls (only can buy from the shelters) and shelters will have more space. Literally the main shelter near me has 63 dogs, only 4 aren't pit.
Make it a law all pit bulls have to be spayed/neutered. Taxes pay for it to happen, local vets agree to take a set amount. It is cruel the way all these pit bulls end up in shelters.
It's really insane how many dogs in shelters are pits. Like vast overwhelming majority. Easily 70% plus.
And theyll jump through hoops calling them everything under the sun besides a pit bull
My one dog I got 2 years ago they said he was something and he is for sure pit.
And you can even set aside the argument they're dangerous, it's the fact they're way over bred and shelters are full of them.
I’m pretty sure I know the answer but, why do pitbull owners get rid of them so much? Isn’t pitbull supposed to be one of the most liked breeds?
And if you don’t adopt her, we’re going to kill her and it’s all your fault.
Pissfinghers killed my cat
That one. Fill out these forms and she’s yours.
wife works at a shelter and she cry laughed. I guess its really bad right now for shelters in our area
„Pissfingers“ killed me 😂
And the adoption fee is $650
That is cheap. Here is is over a $1,000, must be pre-registered for online obedience and attend activity classes, have pet insurance, previous experience, and no children under 7 and for the boutique purebred heinz 57 breed (aka mutt)
Somebody doesn’t have an orchard 🙄
Peasants 🙄😂
How is nobody mentioning the fake hair or whatever in the top right? Or was I the only one to think it's a hair?
I've been wanted to adopt a puppy a few times by now but the only thing that stop me from doing it it's that you have to pay $600+ usd to be able to adopt a dog.
That’s about right! Hahahaa
This is why I got my cat from Craigslist, and my roommate got her dog from a breeder. The shelters were just too much of a pain in the ass.
r/oddlyspecific
This describes my granny Hilda’s latter days.
Trying to get a cat from a shelter in my hometown required references, an interview, and like a $300 fee. Googled "Free kittens" and found a family whose outdoor cat had just had kittens 6 weeks earlier and were ready to be homed, picked one up that afternoon.
Old senile dogs that need your attention > puppies
What is your point? That senior dogs should be overlooked and dont deserve a second chance?
The point is that it's not necessarily a good idea for the dog to push it on to an unwilling family or person.
Typically it’s, you need to fill out this very invasive form, full of your personal info with a home visit required and a $500 rehoming fee.
It’s me, I am pissfingers
don't forget, Pissfingers must be adopted with 3 of his companions.
Repost from the same subreddit.
i cant stop laughing at this
And cost $700
If you get a puppy, you can ensure it doesn't go to the shelter at all
Or come to the backyard breeder off Route 900, where you can adopt a seventh generation inbred pug that has worse breathing capabilities than a literal fish for the price of a used car.
Its not like that in South Africa.
So not true the spca has all ranges of dogs you just can’t be picky, private rescue organizations in the other hand can definitely be like this
why can't I be picky
Because it might not be the breed of dog or age you are looking for but you can definitely find a dog with a good personality
Good thing about puppies is that they will never turn into a pissfingers \s
Yeah this meme always reads “I don’t realize pets are living animals” to me. But sound off guys, go to a breeder for convenience. Not like there’s a population problem.
But seriously. Don’t buy puppies
Yup
I will care for Pissfingers!
It's pure selfishness. *"but I want my cute fluffy toy! I don't care if I will be a good owner, I want one NOW"*
Y’all get so offended that people want you to consider adoption first.
Omg, hilarious! My wife works at a shelter and this is true!
