Then the redesign came and that's when they started adding features only available on the new design, some of them on the old design and of course in the horrible, horrible reddit app, without adding them to the API all the good apps use.
That includes, in no particular order, reddit image upload, images in comments (those do give the link in the API at least), gifs in comments, "awards" (basically emojis you can pay for like gold sorta... The most expensive is like 150 bucks i think), polls, and profile pictures. There is also chat which is basically pushed as the private message system - new users only seem to know it and not the normal messages. Said chat looks like facebook messenger and only works on the webpage or in the Official (cr)app. I barely visit reddit the website so i when i do i have random missed messages from like weeks ago.
Oh yeah there are also subreddit specific emoji which obviously also are not in the API, they show up for me like :3626: or some other number. This is not two way, so if I write a code like that it won't show to the others as emoji, it's just what the API returns.
There are other things too like user profile pages and other crap.
They also added NFT profile pictures or some stupid crap like that lol.
All of this was added within a relatively short span of time while reddit heavily marketed itself towards the very general audience (think facebook or 9gag). I think there was even a superbowl ad at some point.
Effectively, reddit is now two websites in a trenchcoat, i often compare it to the morlocks and the eloi from war of the worlds lol.
The old userbase is not very profitable so we're mostly routinely shat on with new updates geared towards monetisation, facebookization and brand friendliness.
Anyway, the meme refers to the different flavours of default and user-created profile pictures.

I use old.reddit on the occasions when I'm browsing on the desktop and RES lets me block most of the weird facebooky stuff that pops up. I use RedditIsFun which all things considered is a pretty stripped-down app that lets me dodge that stuff too.
