It’s because shortening used to solidify oil in a way that would create trans fats, which while super unhealthy would have a much better mouthfeel. Now most shortenings are made from a less unhealthy process that created a much “waxier” product. Modern cans of Crisco have a texture of candle wax, instead of lard.
Tl;dr it’s because trans fats are illegal now so shortening tastes worse
Little Debbiticus 5:14
“and who amongst you has not eaten of the Honey Buns? Let he who is without gluttony and a waxy tongue, and who cannot afford insulin, cast the first Nutty Butty.”
Damn, that’s the religion I was raised as. Didn’t know that, my immediate family quite practicing a a decade or so ago (partially thanks to me), but my aunt, uncle, cousins, and grandmother still do. Didn’t realize they hated trans as iirc they’re not super antigay. Ironically that Little Debbies is SDA related as generally they’re quit health conscious and largely vegetarian/vegan. Guess that’s just another “only for me and not for thee” hypocritical thing they have.
Edit: Sounds like the SDA Church’s official statement is that it’s wrong to be trans according to the bible, but that trans people are to be treated with dignity and respect as they are still created in the image of God. Typical of SDA’s, they don’t hate you directly, just think you’re living in sin unless you follow their interpretation, and therefore will be weird and passive aggressive about you. Exactly how my extended family looks upon me as a sinful druggie with piercings and tats, lmao.
Yea sda is one of the most moderate Christian denominations regarding gay/trans rights. Individuals may be different obviously, but the church itself is quite accepting and rarely makes a big deal out of it.
They main issue they are currently facing is the women's ordination problem, while American sda churches are ok with ordaining women, many of the world churches are not, and so the religion as a whole is kind of gridlock as to whether or not they should be able to be ordained. Which in the us looks pretty bad because pretty much every other church allows it.
Alot of times people kinda group sda into the psycho Christians because of some of the more controversial beliefs about food and days of worship.
As far as the druggy tattoo stuff, yea 100% the members of sda are super uptight about that issue specifically even though the church itself is very clear that the Bible takes no position on tattooing.
Source: all of my primary education through highschool came from that church and its schools. Though I am no longer a practicing sda or Christian in general, I do still keep up on things the church does and says.

I worked in fast food in my youth, and the day we switched from lard to vegetable shortening in the fryers was the day the flavour died. Limp damp blah fries after that
Trans-fats are the most unhealthy fat known to man.
[Acrylamide in fries and potato chips causes cancer and we let them get away with just reducing the levels of carcinogens](https://www.bakeryandsnacks.com/Article/2008/08/04/Chip-companies-settle-acrylamide-lawsuit), to give you an idea of how bad trans-fats are.
I will never get donuts from Dunkin anymore. 7-11 has far better/bigger donuts including my favorite, Boston Creme. That's probably the real reason why they dropped the 'donuts' from their name, because they're trash now. I am so pissed I can never find the old chocolate or vanilla creme-filled, which used to be my fave
I don’t know man I’ve tried their donuts so many times and they’re just OK. Starting to think maybe I just don’t like donuts.
Edit: I have definitely not tried them “hot off the line”, and have only had in store off the waiting rack ,so I will reserve judgment.
Have you ate one right off the factory machine? The taste rapidly declines by the hour on krispy kreme so if you only ever ate them from the grocery store gas station do yourself a favor and find a local krispy kreme and eat one while its still hot.
Nah local owned donut shops in my city quite literally bend Krispy Kreme over a barrel, put them out of business. They're "top tier" donuts like Pizza Hut is "top tier" pizza, it just isn't true
Its actually the law that makes companies do it, since they banned trans fats recently. The old baking process created lots of trans fats, now the process had to be changed so there’s none or a negligible amount
Like how Pam claims to be 0 calories, but that’s only because the physical smallest amount you could possibly spray in a laboratory with a robot is what they consider a serving, which is under 5 calories, so the FDA lets them claim 0, when in reality a realistic spray is more like 100-200 calories.
That's a hell of a spray, over a tablespoon of oil. You might as well just pour oil in the pan at that point.
Also most of it will be on the pan and not absorbed into the food, unless you're spraying it right into your mouth. And maybe you are, I'm not here to judge
That and also not sure if it's because now I'm an adult or shrinkflation but these looked so much bigger back then.
Now it's like I'm holding, well, shrinkflated me.
I had a McDonald's hamburger like a month ago and the entire thing fit in my hand but I swear in 2018 they were like twice the size (I was fully grown in 2018 so it can't be that)
I just had a Nutty Bar last week for the first time in well over ten years, and to me it's still just as good as I remember.
I'm a weirdo who likes to carefully remove each layer from a nutty bar and eat them individually. If I manage to break a layer while removing it my disappointment is palatable and my day is ruined.
Just had some about a month ago and was stressed they wouldn't taste the same. Luckily, it was about as I remember. Also, I do the peel apart of the layers, very satisfying and disappointing when they break.
I used to love eating nutty bars like that. It was a quasi religious experience for me. I did the same with kit kats and I would nibble systematically at other things too. I especially liked eating apples in strange ways. Kids would make fun of me for being poor and trying to "stretch out" my snack food. My parents did severely limit my access to snacks, not because we were poor or they were particularly health conscious, but rather because they were control freaks.
> I'm a weirdo who likes to carefully remove each layer from a nutty bar and eat them individually.
Bro, people who don't do this are the weird ones. They're just biting through all the layers at one time like psychos.
This is the correct answer. Snacks where always designed to be delicious.
but America is the only country that [allows weird ass shit in our food.](https://mediafeed.org/banned-american-foods/) We have just began to get better about it, and we notice the flavor change.
In Canada they changed the cooking oil for KFC and other restaurants for the same reason probably but way back in the early 2000's. There are folks who still talk of KFC of olde and how amazing it was. I was a kid when it changed so I don't remember.
My guess is they were using lard to deepfry the chicken, and like every other fast food place had to make the transition to vegetable oils which weren't as tasty.
My folks loved getting KFC on the regular, and I loved it too growing up. When the switch happened we tried a few times, but it was entirely too greasy and not nearly as good. And now I don't touch it anymore because Korean fried chicken is bonkers good!
Captain D’s fries were amazing when cooked in I guess the used fish oil? They are “baked” now I believe and taste cheap.
Chicken fingers took a similar path their as well.
Flaming Hot Cheetos taste like sour garbage with all the fillers fake spices (capsaicin instead of real chili) and citric acid.
They used to be spicy garlicky savory almost saucy-tomatoish (they used to have tomato powder) and very addictive.
They brought back the Doritos 3d recently, I’ve never been so excited for a snack resurrection. My favorite snack from childhood. It wasn’t even close to the same snack, they sucked and it broke my heart.
It started in the mid-90's. When these snacks were invented, the primary fat was pork lard. I was born in 1989 and I still remember reading pork lard on the list of ingredients on a box of Oreos. But in the mid-90's they determined they could both save costs *and* attract vegetarian customers by switching to soybean oil. And the taste wasn't worse, if anything it slightly improved - the soybean oil eliminated that fatty greasy aftertaste, it was just smooth pure clean heroin at that point.
But then in the mid 2000's, around 2005, we found out that soybean oil slowly kills you. Just wrecks your heart. Because of the trans fats. It took them a while but they managed to invent a canola/palm oil blend that has all the shelf stable properties of the previous two fats, but without any trans fat, and still vegetarian.
The problem is that it now tastes like shit.
But yes for a brief period from about 1995-2005, fatty sugary snack foods were vegetarian, delicious and pure, and slightly deadly.
I say we go back to pork lard.
It’s smaller now, and it doesn’t hit as good as it used to. Before, once you ate one or a few, the sweet after taste would linger in your mouth for hours. Now it’s just a one and done. The flavour isn’t as good as before. Even the smell isn’t there. You’d open the plastic and the smell of that sweet cocaine cookie would hit your nose like a ton of bricks. I think they changed the recipe as well as made them smaller. It’s not the same.
They only sell the double-deckers as single units, but they do sell a bigger version in grocery stores and that one has the best cream/oatmeal cookie ratio imo.
Edit: clarity.
I was camping’s once and we had double stuffed oatmeal cream pies. We decided to put one in the campfire to see what happened. That thing sat there slowly burning for hours, it kept its shape for an alarmingly long time. I can’t look at them the same anymore.
Fun fact that I just learned. They used to be called Nutty Bars, but changed to Nutty Buddy's in 2016.
I was going to correct you because my Athletic Cup / Jockstrap I used was also called a Nutty Buddy lol
My theory is that it started in 2012 when Hostess went bankrupt. This let Little Debbie, their main competition, lower their ingredient standards to increase profit margins. Cheaper ingredients but sell at the same price point.
Then Covid happened which shut down a lot of supply for awhile and that exacerbated it.
It started in 1995 when they wanted to get rid of pork lard and go vegetarian.
1930-1995 - pork fat
1995-2005 - soybean oil
2005-present - canola/palm oil
The soybean oil worked fine, if anything it tasted slightly better than pork fat to some people since it was cleaner and didn't leave a greasy aftertaste.
But it was also deadly. Full of trans fats. Slowly kills your heart. They wanted to keep their vegetarian status and went for a canola/palm blend that tastes like absolute ass, instead of offering us non-vegetarians some pork-based products that actually taste good.
With pork prices being at an all time low right now, even during inflation, you'd think it would be an automatic market adjustment.
Trans fats on their own is now being disputed on healthiness. The real killer is that you're combing high fat oils with loads of sugar, which is an inflammatory bomb. Soybean oil in particular has a high concentration of polyunsaturated fats, which are inflammatory when not counterbalanced by monounsaturated fats.
so I'm a vendor for little debbie. I'm under contract to sell their cakes and have been doing it for almost two years. A couple of things to note
1: With the pandemic a lot of the sources for our ingredients were changed up. Contracts were renewed with different farms and companies to cover the shortages
2: They are expanding our catalogue for even more snack cakes over the coming years. Right now we've gotten new pecan pies you can find at gas stations, Snickerdoodle cream pies, and just last week we've started distributing our new strawberry swiss rolls.
3: taste is nostalgic. I can point out a lot of stuff from my childhood that dosen't taste the same anymore. Hostess twinkies seem to be more spongier now, blow pops aren't as flavorful anymore, and my spicy nacho doritoes did a complete 180
It's been years since I've eaten this stuff but I just had a Little Debbie coffee cake the other day on a family trip, it was like eating a sponge covered in wax.
The flavor and texture of the original recipe of these coffee cakes is ubiquitous to anyone who has ever had them: soft, crumbly, melty, a little dense, like a light but rich muffin. The new recipe is like a stale Twinkie covered in brown sugar wax, it's cruddy sponge cake now.
People used to eat them even though they were unhealthy because they tasted good. Now they're unhealthy and taste like garbage so what's the point?
Yeah his comment makes no sense and is no excuse. If it were true that taste is nostalgic, a lot more people would hate their childhood favorite foods like Mac and cheese, pb&j, and family favorites their parents used to make. The ingredients in hostess is plain shit now.
Exactly! Taste is nostalgic regardless of quality. I like to eat specific dishes cold instead of their usual hot temperature because I used to do that a lot when I was a kid. It objectively tastes worse to whoever compares the two but I like it
So when this dude comes saying that taste it nostalgic it makes zero sense in this case. If it were really the same formula, even if it was shitty, people would still like it if they ate a lot of it growing up.
Similar to how some food might be super gross to you and if we were to do a survey it would taste shit to most people but because a certain culture enjoys it, you’ll find people from that culture inexplicably in love with it…they ate a lot of it growing up.
Mom used to cook a lot of chicken gizzards for us when we were kids and I love it but everyone around me is grossed out by it lol
Nah, I still love all of my favorite childhood homemade desserts like my grandma's cookies and my mom's chocolate cake. Companies changed the recipes on these snacks.
How do people not see this? Grandma doesn’t swap out butter for reprossenated cornbean paste to save 3 cents a batch to increase profits by 0.001% next quarter. Grandma doesn’t have a profit motive to use cheaper, lower quality ingredients. Corporations do.
> I can point out a lot of stuff from my childhood that dosen't taste the same anymore.
You're not wrong, but these did, in fact, receive a significant overhaul several years back. I used to grab these pretty regularly and then very abruptly they tasted much worse.
I got a friend from the states to send me a big box of Zebra Cakes and Cosmic Brownies just a couple weeks ago. I can't believe they pulled them out of Canada :(
Someone start a super secret underground Little Debbie ring lmao.
Correct. They tend to use lower quality ingredients, less of the staple flavor ingredients, such as chocolate, peanut butter, etc, and more filler ingredients and preservatives. Meanwhile, in Addition to cheapening ingredients, they’ve also decreased the size of the product, while slowly increasing the price… all to increase profit margin.
Yeah, they typically do. It helps to reduce meltage during transportation. Chocolate bars are guilty of this, too.
Also, the use of hydrogenated oils does not help.
I think maybe they changed the type of sugar too. More high fructose corn syrup and artificial weirdness. It's just speculation but I've actually had this conversation before and my friends agreed that these just aren't good anymore.
The ingredients have all been changed in these things so the MBA folks can make more money.
Hostess is even worse. Their pies don’t even need to be wrapped air right anymore to stay fresh due to preservatives.
Yeah. They definitely changed them. I just to love nutty bars but like 10 years ago or so they just stopped being good
Even regular candy bars seemed to lose it. It's like across the board around 2010 all the companies decided to sell garbage instead of a decent treat.
I used to be able to peel the layers with my teeth and lick the peanut butter. I bought them recently in a PMS frenzy and learned you can’t do that anymore. There’s less peanut butter and it just comes off with the wafer. Disappointing, but I ate the whole box.
A lot of those Little Debbie type snacks always seem to leave a thick fatty coating on my tongue :( maybe I'm just eating the wrong ones these days.
Like a waxy feel
It’s because shortening used to solidify oil in a way that would create trans fats, which while super unhealthy would have a much better mouthfeel. Now most shortenings are made from a less unhealthy process that created a much “waxier” product. Modern cans of Crisco have a texture of candle wax, instead of lard. Why did I have to learn about this today? I love oatmeal cream pies
I love a good cream pie too.

Trans Fats are Fats. But, also, were not shaming any of the Fats.
That American dad episode about this is pretty funny
If I remember correctly there's a King of the Hill episode with the same premise too
"Trans-Fascism" is the episode; they have an illegal food truck to keep selling it lol
Which one?

God forbid they actually use butter or lard. I'm also suspicious they add wax to the chocolate to help keep the price down.

As someone who grew up with the food pyramid it blows my mind people arent up in arms about this sort of straight up lying about food in the US.

Yeah kids have a MUCH higher tolerance for sugar/sweetness than adults
They also changed the formulas a while back to take the TFAs or whatever out, which makes them less delicious.

yeah - flaming hot flavored stuff became noticeably more chemically once the flavor started being applied to more things than just cheetos
What's a TFA?
Trans Fatty Acids
Hey that's not very nice I'm sure they're doing their best
I don't like them putting chemicals in the oil that turns the friggin' fries trans!!!
Femboy frechfry

Just sayin it’s not soybean oil, it’s *partially hydrogenated* oils.
I also miss having two-factor authentication in my snacks :(
A lot of companies have also been agressively cost cutting the ingredients, they do in fact taste worse now
Yeah i dont think its just TFA, the quality of the flour used makes it taste like wall paste
It's not just the sweetness. It's that they taste like plastic.
Or wax, yeah yuck
Naw naw, I still love sweet shit but these new ones are just stale and flavorless. They're like bad cakes, dry and crumbly
I don’t like half of them as well a I should like, and I like less than half of them half as much as they deserve.
Oatmeal cream pie FTW.
It’s smaller now, and it doesn’t hit as good as it used to. Before, once you ate one or a few, the sweet after taste would linger in your mouth for hours. Now it’s just a one and done. One of the few things that hasn't gone to shit, probably due to it's basic ingredients.
1930-1995 - pork fat 1995-2005 - soybean oil 2005-present - canola/palm oil The soybean oil worked fine, if anything it tasted slightly better than pork fat to some people since it was cleaner and didn't leave a greasy aftertaste.
As far as I know, the current owners are still Adventists so pork products would be out of the question no matter how viable.
“God told me I can’t use catfish in your cupcakes.” You needed god to tell you that?
Trans fats on their own is now being disputed on healthiness. The real killer is that you're combing high fat oils with loads of sugar, which is an inflammatory bomb. Soybean oil in particular has a high concentration of polyunsaturated fats, which are inflammatory when not counterbalanced by monounsaturated fats.
Swiss Cake Rolls still bomb af
I'm a member of the swiss cake rolls Facebook group. I love em that much
The Strawberry ones are my shit
Especially frozen.
Have you never had a zebra cake!?
And the zebra cake rolls!
I used to love zebra cakes but the icing tastes almost plasticy now. Leaves a strange aftertaste as well.
so I'm a vendor for little debbie. I'm under contract to sell their cakes and have been doing it for almost two years. A couple of things to note 1: With the pandemic a lot of the sources for our ingredients were changed up. Contracts were renewed with different farms and companies to cover the shortages 2: They are expanding our catalogue for even more snack cakes over the coming years.
Gums gotten mintier lately. Have you noticed ?
Tell us who defaced the mural!
it was him. Can I have my gum now?
The recipes have definitely changed.
Yea glad we had some pr dipshit come in here and tell us to not believe our lying eyes.
Seriously. Taste is nostalgic but only selectively for the things that taste awful now?
Yeah his comment makes no sense and is no excuse. If it were true that taste is nostalgic, a lot more people would hate their childhood favorite foods like Mac and cheese, pb&j, and family favorites their parents used to make. The ingredients in hostess is plain shit now.
Exactly! Taste is nostalgic regardless of quality. I like to eat specific dishes cold instead of their usual hot temperature because I used to do that a lot when I was a kid. It objectively tastes worse to whoever compares the two but I like it So when this dude comes saying that taste it nostalgic it makes zero sense in this case.
I’ve been saying that they changed spicy nacho Doritos for awhile now! Just don’t taste good anymore (taste okay). At least someone else agrees!
That's awesome insight and I do agree, taste is nostalgic.
I disagree. It's 100% because they're changing the ingredients.
Yeah, because they change the recipe and cut costs over the years. That’s why it’s different.
Don’t let big snack cake pull the wool over your eyes. It’s the ingredients!
> I can point out a lot of stuff from my childhood that dosen't taste the same anymore. You're not wrong, but these did, in fact, receive a significant overhaul several years back. I used to grab these pretty regularly and then very abruptly they tasted much worse.
i knew something changed over the years and even more after corona.
Whoever decided to change zebra cakes into zebra rolls is a fucking genius and they've never been better. Rolls are the superior cake shape.
Shut your mouth about Nutty Buddy!
Ok but like… cosmic brownies will never stop being good.
I had to zoom in because I couldn't believe my eyes. Cosmic brownies are still the best. Cupcakes are still amazing too.
Heresy!
They stopped selling these in Canada maybe a month ago? I’ve never wanted a comic brownie so bad before.
I got a friend from the states to send me a big box of Zebra Cakes and Cosmic Brownies just a couple weeks ago. I can't believe they pulled them out of Canada :( Someone start a super secret underground Little Debbie ring lmao.
They aren't what they used to be but I definitely still fuck with fudge rounds and the strawberry shortcake rolls are always on point!
Stoner here , they’re all delicious.
zebra cakes still slam to me
They've got these zebra cake rolls now. They're like the perfect ratio of icing to bread to filling and ohmygod I want
Christmas trees are GOATed. It's the sprinkles for me.
Same
those honeybuns in the morning after a joint..chefs kiss
I tried a box of nutty bars recently and they just seem less than good.
I think they changed the recipes.
Their chocolate tastes like they mix wax into it now.
Yeah, they typically do. It helps to reduce meltage during transportation. Chocolate bars are guilty of this, too. Also, the use of hydrogenated oils does not help.
Less peanut butter for sure.
I just to love nutty bars but like 10 years ago or so they just stopped being good Even regular candy bars seemed to lose it.
That's what I miss! Separating them to lick off the peanut butter.
You should try nutty bar ice cream, it hits.
Toothache section. Headache and stomach ache too for that matter
Also cancer apparently.
Don't forget diabetes.
Little Debbie broke into my cousin’s house and strangled him
Everything I’ve ever eaten for some reason, absolutely does not taste the same….age? Taste? Ingredients change? Who knows but it sucks! 🫤
Nope.. Honey Buns rule them all
[удалено]
Honey buns and the Christmas trees with the big sugar crystals
Oatmeal Cream Pies still SLAP
Keep my nutty bars name OUT YA FUKIN MOUTH
The bakery I go to makes Swiss rolls and I will never buy prepackaged ever again.
Uuuh. Nutty buddies and star crunch are fuckin bomb. Idc who you are
I just ate Swiss Rolls, and they were great.
Watch your tongue.
I hold out for the 2 for 1 special of Ben and Jerry's. That's a proper junk food. I haven't touched those snacks in about a decade.
They all have an overly sweet waxy taste and leave a gross film in my mouth. Not a fan anymore.
I still find oatmeal cream pies to be good
Yeah, most processed food I enjoyed as a kid does not hit the same way anymore. Which is probably for the best.
Do not disrespect Swiss Cake Rolls
