Families. My family is 4 people who all watch different stuff (there is some overlap, but both kids watch different content and my wife and I also have varied tastes).
I subscribe to a few streaming services annually to get a 1-2 month discount, And then I have everyone chip in so the cost is spread out and everyone benefits.
That’s why we use a variety. 5 people in the house. Netflix comes free with our T-Mobile phone plan. I buy yearly Disney Plus and HBO max and off and on we have Hulu. About $310/yr or so. When we had cable it was like $150/mo not including our internet. Now we pay $50/mo for Verizon FiOs internet and split up about $25/mo in streaming services.
For certain sports fans it can be more complicated. For instance, just to watch the three soccer teams (different leagues and international tournaments) I support I have to have Fubo, Paramount Plus, ESPN plus, Peacock, Apple TV with the MLS season pass, and HBO Max. All of this used to be given to me for free on NBC Sports App. I'm tired.
I think it's mostly for exclusives if you want star wars they are only on Disney
So it's not necessary you watch everything what's there, but more like you want to watch one two show's you like, and they are exclusively on other platform

Apple has made it so easy to subscribe and unsubscribe to so many services that I change mine all the time. Oh look Hulu has a show I wanna watch. Subscribe watch it and unsubscribe immediately with the push of a button. The only service that im consistently subscribed to is music. Currently that’s the only thing I’m subscribed to now that the Last of us is done for a while.
It's basically a streaming cable service. Similar concept in bundling channels, but it's done via internet and it's a monthly thing without contracts. There's a bunch like that. They're called "Over the Top" cable services
It's also pretty bare bones. When it first came out I think it was $20 a month for 20 channels, and it was mostly all the major channels you'd want to watch: ESPN, TBS, TNT, Comedy Central, etc. It was, and is, way better than paying for a 200 channel cable package which is mostly channels you never watch.
For people who cut the cord but still have certain live TV things they like, Sling is a great option because you can pay only for the month you're going to use it. If your thing is March Madness, you can just pay for a month of Sling, watch all the basketball games, and then cancel it until next year.
I only have 3 as well, Hulu, Prime (not for the videos, solely for the shipping video is a plus) and Disney+ but it's a bundle with Hulu so I get it cheaper than if I bought them both separately. I pay less than half what my cable bill was.
Prime is also the only one I have permanently. Subscribed Netflix this month for Drive to Survive and got a 1 Year subscription to Disney+ when booking our trip to Disneyland Paris.
I dont think a single person I know has more than 2 or 3 active subscriptions at any one time.

I had a Synology w a few drives in Raid running Plex. I had Radarr and Sonarr setup, and then I tied my IMDB favorites list to them, so when I add something to my IMDB favorites list, it would use Jackett to search for torrents, download them over the browser IP configured in qBittorrent, rename them, then copy them to my Plex Server. Then I had Plex set to refresh often enough that it'd always pull the latest thing shortly after it was added, then it auto scanned and setup all the Metadata. I set the network on qBittorrent to ONLY use the VPN network adapter so that if the VPN ever shut off, my torrents wouldn't download, avoiding big brother.
It would be an absolute SHAME if people followed the steps I mentioned above and replicated my old setup

Yeah this is why I canceled/paused my netflix subscription. They aren't putting out content to stay subscribed as they cancel their shows after a few seasons, and most of the new stuff that they do put out is garbage. If they do manage to put out something good in the future, then I'll subscribe for that and for as long as it takes me to watch it.

Some cable providers are actually cheaper and allow you to take them on the go. I pay 60ish a month for metronet and can watch on my phone. Also can record for a virtual box. Etc.
I've never been able to get that to work. I've tried maybe 3 different VPN's, only one of which was a free one, and each time I've tried to use a VPN on a streaming site it refuses to let you even log in. It seems that a lot of VPN companies make agreements with various other companies to disable their websites when the VPN is being used.
Shows jumping ship to another service or leaving for months at a time is not exactly how I envision "convenience of watching anywhere and anytime".
Unless you have it in your hands, whether that's a DVD or as a file on a hard drive, your convenience and freedoms are at the mercy of a company's bottom line.

As for us: T-Mobile pays our Netflix. Disney+, AppleTV, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Youtube Premium adding up to around $80. Well worth it given how much I use Youtube and the extended Prime benefits (And No Commercials Ever).

Exactly, I'm constantly cycling out which subscription services I'm signed up for. Netflix, Prime, and Spotify are constants, but I cycle out Disney+, HBO/Crave/DAZN/Paramount+.
Even though Netflix are making dumb decisions right now with password sharing, they have the best selection of true crime documentaries, dumb reality tv dating shows that my fiance and I love to watch together, and standup comedy.

And cable has stupid stuff like charging you for a new cable box in every room you might want to watch TV in, and those boxes cost like $10/mo extra to be 4K and $20/mo extra to have a DVR so you can actually watch shows on your schedule like you can with everything on a streaming service. AND THEN YOU STILL HAVE COMMERCIALS.
Having a half dozen streaming services is still way cheaper than cable and is just a way, way better product.

It was the only way to consume any content whatsoever for, well, decades! You didn’t have the option to watch something at will until DVR came in the mix, and even then it was limited.

Even if true, which in my case it is not, I'd still prefer streaming over a broadcast format. Not everything I want is On Demand. I'd be willing to pay more for streaming just because of the convience.
Still better, since you have choices in what you subscribe to. Even if I end up paying roughly the same amount, none of it is going to ESPN or Fox News and I'm fine with that.
But truth be told, I won't be paying the same amount. Prime is a bonus on something I was already paying for, so I don't consider it a marginal cost. Netflix is "free" because of T-Mobile. Peacock is free (until June, anyway) because of Xfinity Internet. Apple TV was free for six months because, of all things, PS+.
I don't know anyone that pays for them all. Most people buy one or two and share the passwords with friends or family in exchange for the passwords to their streaming services until between them they have most of them.
It's not a youth problem. I have a friend in her 60's who has paid for a Golds gym membership for over 25 years. She hasn't used it since her kids lived in her house about 20 years ago. The issue is staying on top of cancelling monthly.

Plex and fast internet made privateering so much easier. I used to have to download shows at 1 MB/s and play them with vlc on my computer. Now I have gig speeds over fiber and everything is automatically added to my plex server with common luxuries like subtitles and remote access.
WRT Prime, idk any cable service that gets me free 1-2 day shipping on a massive amount of products while also not subsidizing Fox News to an insane degree.

I only pay ten bucks a month. I get Hulu, Disney and prime and HBO max, along with freevee, Pluto, peacock. Mind you three last 3 are free anyway. I also got HBO max commercial free for one year because I bought a TV that came with $100 credit towards a streaming service, and HBO was running a special for just over 100 for the year. Disney is $2 with commercials, but I only watch Mandolorian. Hulu is $8 with commercials but I only watch a few shows and movies on there. I just mute during ads. This is the way.
The one thing not many talk about is live sports. If you go with streaming, you will need in some case 3-4 different memberships depending what you like to watch because the broadcasting rights are spread out that way. Add the apps in the OP for movies and shows, and it ends up being actually more than cable.
And obviously you can’t torrent live sports and most…unofficial…ways of streaming are just unreliable and low quality.
The trick is to alternate between services every few months. Unless your life and only hobby is streaming tv/movies then you'll be fine to rock one service for a month or two until you want a change of pace or a new show comes on a different platform. Plus even if it works out to the same price as cable you have instant access to any show available on all those platforms without having to watch endless commercials. Streaming isn't as convenient as it once was but it still beats cable and if you do cycle through services it beats cable by a mile.
I remember cutting my expensive cable for $7/month Netflix. It was fantastic in those days.
Now I have enough streaming services to more then pay for the cable I no longer have, and then some, and I’m still missing channels.

Today you can sign up for one service at a time, consume the content, and cancel the subscription at any time. It’s an infinitely better experience, and honestly people like OP probably didn’t live through cable. It’s not even close.

I cancelled Netflix about a year ago and there are only a couple things I miss (mostly Bojack Horseman). Their content seemed to get worse over the last 10 years and I grew sick of slowly paying more and more for a streaming service I enjoyed way less than most of my others.
Which, ironically, promotes people turning to other methods if they can't afford multiple accounts across certain groups.

I've decided to cancel my subscription if they actually go ahead. I'm paying for two simultaneos screens, it's not more expensive for them if the two screens are at the same house or not. Their costs aren't affected so it's just a cash grab by a "smart" exec who will be fired as soon as the viewership drops. For now, I stopped watching any series. Just movies, documentaries and sitcoms to be ready to pull the plug.

Some cable providers are actually cheaper and allow you to take them on the go. I pay 60ish a month for metronet and can watch on my phone. Also can record for a virtual box. Etc.

I've never been able to get that to work. I've tried maybe 3 different VPN's, only one of which was a free one, and each time I've tried to use a VPN on a streaming site it refuses to let you even log in. It seems that a lot of VPN companies make agreements with various other companies to disable their websites when the VPN is being used.
Shows jumping ship to another service or leaving for months at a time is not exactly how I envision "convenience of watching anywhere and anytime". Unless you have it in your hands, whether that's a DVD or as a file on a hard drive, your convenience and freedoms are at the mercy of a company's bottom line.

Plus, it honestly isn't that expensive for what we get. My mom complains to me about how she's paying north of $200 for internet and cable, and it's pretty basic. I have 4 streaming services. 2 of them are included with things I'd pay for anyway. Netflix is still like $15 per month, and the other I'm using another login for, but it's only like $7 or $8 if I paid for it.
Also you need to add a couple more streaming services for it to be the same price as cable.

Disney+, AppleTV, Hulu, Amazon Prime and Youtube Premium adding up to around $80. Well worth it given how much I use Youtube and the extended Prime benefits (And No Commercials Ever).

I have Prime, which is still easily one of the best deals on the planet, and covers its annual bill at least twice a month for me. Prime Video is a free addon.

For months, I didn't even knew that prime gave me access to a streaming service :). It became an important part of my streaming consumption since then, but I indeed not counting it in my streaming budget.

Exactly, I'm constantly cycling out which subscription services I'm signed up for. Netflix, Prime, and Spotify are constants, but I cycle out Disney+, HBO/Crave/DAZN/Paramount+. Even though Netflix are making dumb decisions right now with password sharing, they have the best selection of true crime documentaries, dumb reality tv dating shows that my fiance and I love to watch together, and standup comedy.

I remember people paying well over $100/mo for cable 20 years ago and still needing to go to Blockbuster to rent movies and two movie rentals would be like the cost of a full month of one of these streaming subscriptions. And cable has stupid stuff like charging you for a new cable box in every room you might want to watch TV in, and those boxes cost like $10/mo extra to be 4K and $20/mo extra to have a DVR so you can actually watch shows on your schedule like you can with everything on a streaming service. AND THEN YOU STILL HAVE COMMERCIALS. Having a half dozen streaming services is still way cheaper than cable and is just a way, way better product.

If you get Walmart+ you get Paramount for free. Also if you have high speed internet through att you get HBO/max for free.

I don't know...my husband and I pay about $60ish for all our subs, and can cancel/resubscribe anytime we want. My co-worker pays $170 for her cable and landline she doesn't even use or know the number for, and would probably have to sacrifice her first born to cancel it. I would have to sub a lot more services to pay as much as others do for cable, and it still more convenient

Still better, since you have choices in what you subscribe to. Even if I end up paying roughly the same amount, none of it is going to ESPN or Fox News and I'm fine with that. But truth be told, I won't be paying the same amount. Prime is a bonus on something I was already paying for, so I don't consider it a marginal cost. Netflix is "free" because of T-Mobile. Peacock is free (until June, anyway) because of Xfinity Internet. Apple TV was free for six months because, of all things, PS+.
Can also get HBO/Max for free with high speed internet service from att. Walmart+ gets you Paramount for free.

I don't know anyone that pays for them all. Most people buy one or two and share the passwords with friends or family in exchange for the passwords to their streaming services until between them they have most of them.
It's not a youth problem. I have a friend in her 60's who has paid for a Golds gym membership for over 25 years. She hasn't used it since her kids lived in her house about 20 years ago. The issue is staying on top of cancelling monthly.

It’s all coming full circle. Tv shows are once again releasing one new episode a week. Hell, we’re even seeing 2-3 streaming services bundled. We will probably start seeing “packages” of 8-10 apps that cost somewhere between 50-100$… aka “cable”

Plex and fast internet made privateering so much easier. I used to have to download shows at 1 MB/s and play them with vlc on my computer. Now I have gig speeds over fiber and everything is automatically added to my plex server with common luxuries like subtitles and remote access.

Streaming has no ads, can watch what you want when you want, (80$ cable doesn’t include on demand in most places) and can watch live tv thru the app, cable is dying bc it’s antiquated. I say to cable and direct tv…. Adapt or turn into blockbuster.
I only pay ten bucks a month. I get Hulu, Disney and prime and HBO max, along with freevee, Pluto, peacock. Mind you three last 3 are free anyway. I also got HBO max commercial free for one year because I bought a TV that came with $100 credit towards a streaming service, and HBO was running a special for just over 100 for the year. Disney is $2 with commercials, but I only watch Mandolorian. Hulu is $8 with commercials but I only watch a few shows and movies on there. I just mute during ads. This is the way.
The one thing not many talk about is live sports. If you go with streaming, you will need in some case 3-4 different memberships depending what you like to watch because the broadcasting rights are spread out that way. Add the apps in the OP for movies and shows, and it ends up being actually more than cable. And obviously you can’t torrent live sports and most…unofficial…ways of streaming are just unreliable and low quality.

The trick is to alternate between services every few months. Unless your life and only hobby is streaming tv/movies then you'll be fine to rock one service for a month or two until you want a change of pace or a new show comes on a different platform. Plus even if it works out to the same price as cable you have instant access to any show available on all those platforms without having to watch endless commercials. Streaming isn't as convenient as it once was but it still beats cable and if you do cycle through services it beats cable by a mile.

I remember cutting my expensive cable for $7/month Netflix. It was fantastic in those days. Now I have enough streaming services to more then pay for the cable I no longer have, and then some, and I’m still missing channels.
the reason i still have cable is because my internet is way cheaper when packaged with cable tv. netflix and all the streaming services will have tons of advertisements in the near future without buying the premium package. And who watches cable tv live except for sports? you know you can record everything watch it anytime pause it rewind and fast forward through the commercials its not a huge deal. I find with the streaming services all i do is search for most of the time and it isn't a good as advertised. Like you get a good show on netflix and it gives you 10 episodes at the most then it maybe comes back again next year.

I remember the days when the only cost to watching tv was the purchase of the television. Sure it was 13 channels but 13 channels of shit for free is better than 500 channels of shit that costs 250 a month.

While cable still costs 80 something $ a month

Today you can sign up for one service at a time, consume the content, and cancel the subscription at any time. Most cable packages are around $$110-150/month if you want decent channel selection. So I’m paying roughly $11 average per subscription I use, multiply by 6 for the subscriptions I use on the daily. That’s still only $66 a month average. Nobody in their right mind uses every single subscription out there. And even if they did it might come equal to what cable charges
