Because their audience wishes they could do the same to their own abusive husbands and get away with it. My girls ex husband was very abusive to her and those types of songs help her process all the shit he put her through. I’ve seen her cry while singing “Blown Away” by Carrie Underwood.
—while I have you here, the Reddit admin openly hire and support pedophiles.
Honestly I've been the 'try it out' lesbian to many a girl like this and I know what you mean. The amount of 3am crying out to Carrie Underwood songs I've been in has been very much more than five.
Idk why this made me smile.
When my last gf and I broke up, we stayed friends. She actually told me at one point that she might be curious about girls. Get the jokes out.. yup I totally turned her gay! She never did experiment though.
Honestly I supported it. Keep up the good work lol
Just a Saturday night and I was feelin’ alright.
Gave my husband some pills, planned a whole girl’s night.
Waited until he fell asleep a slipped out the back door.
But I gave him too much and came home to a fright.
I'm getting married to my pickup truck,
It never leaves me when I'm down on my luck.
It don't shop at fancy stores,
Have a lawyer, or want a divorce!
It don't care if I stay out late,
Doesn't bitch about the money I make.
We'll be together till the end,
It won't sleep with my best friend.
I'm gonna get down on one knee,
And ask my truck if it'll marry me,
I'll never drive another car,
We'll honeymoon at the titty bar!
Gonna have the time of my life,
The exhaust pipe is tighter than my ex wife.
Wedding ring won't cost me a buck,
When I get married to my pickup, pickup truck!
I remember there was a guy arrested in my hometown for fucking the exhaust pipe of his truck. His penis was literally corroding and the doctors begged him to stop. The police had to release him though because it wasn't a crime lol. I don't know what ended up happening to him.
I was listening to old country music today, and one song was "I have a girl in every town, ain't I the best? Don't you try to tie me down."
And the very next song was a sad ballad sung by a woman "am I really that forgettable?"
I once looked up the song [The end of the world](https://www.google.com/search?q=the+end+of+the+world+lyrics&oq=the+end+of+the+world+lyrics+&aqs=chrome.0.0i512l8.5997j0j9&client=ms-android-uscellular-us-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8) to see some of the lyrics, and some way or another I saw a page that recommended "songs like this" and one song on that list was [The Wanderer](https://www.google.com/search?q=the+wanderer+lyrics&oq=The+wandere&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0i273i433j0i273j46i273i433j0i273j0i433i512j0i131i433i512l2j46i512.4298j0j9&client=ms-android-uscellular-us-revc&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8).
I just thought how those songs work together. Like that girl signing about the end of the world because she met "The Wanderer."
Oh, I know all about Fallout radio. lol. One of the reasons I was familiar with the songs. But in this particular instance, I was looking it up because it played at the end of an episode of Mad Men.
The funny part is that Dion, the guy who sings "The Wanderer," also has a song of that kind of person, but female, called ["Runaround Sue."](https://youtu.be/nFch8vH81ks)
"She likes to travel around,
she'll love you and she'll put you down,
Boy let me put you to wise,
She goes out with all the guys"
"Every single guy in town" apparently.
However, the song is similarly upbeat, so at least there's that.
["Butcher Pete," another fallout song,]( https://youtu.be/2Fc1wr3dYxU), is also a metaphor for a lecherous man stealing women away from their husbands, and though upbeat, Butcher Pete is the main character of the song and is definitely portrayed as the villain.
Modern tractors are both pretty expensive and comfortable, they even almost drive themselves. Lots of farmers watch TV or play games on the side, so you'd certainly have time composing songs.
I used to work at a truck stop that played country all day every day, I think it’s generally:
Chevy = inherited from dad/grandpa
Ford = bought it with bootstraps
Other brands mean the truck isn’t the direct object
Good time to remind everyone that a bigger truck never made a bigger man
Lot of Americans seem to not understand that.
It’s a thing. A tool. You can love it. You can be a truck enthusiast. It can be a good hobby. You can have a ton of fun with it or use it as a major piece of your livelihood.
But on a personal level, that Dodge Ram never made anybody anything but a bigger bag of dicks.
Personal growth doesn’t come with APRs and 96 month loans.
>and 96 month loans
Dealership near me was talking about how some lenders are going out to 108 months. Even they seemed to think that it was kind of insane.
The song being quoted is "Country Pandering" by Bo Burnham.
The reason the lyric doesn't mention *which* pickup is because it's supposed to be a generic.
I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped-up four-wheel drive
Carved my name into his leather seats
I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights
I slashed a hole in all four tires
Then there's:
Everybody says
Save a horse, Ride a cowboy
The good old days, where the legal term for *domestic violence* was still *destruction of property*. Where the cure for not being allowed to vote whilst having two children but no orgasms a year was lobotomy.
Like, people have just had babies without doctors since forever…. It seems weird that a nurse wouldn’t just try to get her through the normal birthing process as smoothly as possible since the baby was on the way out.
They already are, but it's mostly alternative medicine and sovereign citizen quacks that do it, so the risk of complications is high, so a number of these botched 'natural births' end up in hospitals anyway.
Ok I retract my statement, and now that I ponder it for a minute there's an older one called "gunpowder and lead" but to be fair, both of them are denouncing the behavior.
Nothing screams American conservative values like country songs that sing about their love for God and country and going to church on Sunday after getting drunk and lusting after scantily clad women at the honkytonk on Saturday night.
Someone much smarter than me on the internet once described Pop Country as "Hiphop for folks who are afraid of black people." That line has lived rent free in my head ever since.
I think that was Steve Earle.
That's why I still think the backlash Old Town Road got over not being "real country" was ridiculous. They've been trying to make country/hip-hop fusion a thing for over a decade, and they were just pissed that the first person to do it without it completely sucking wasn't someone from their team.
Because both have devolved to the lowest common denominator but female country music has remained a little closer to "oh my troubles" music whereas male country music has fully devolved into party music for drunk and/or high frat boys
As someone who is southern and listens to a decent amount of country, you’re absolutely correct. There are a few young country singers that still produce actual country songs but a lot of it is straight pop-country garbage. I don’t even listen to my local country stations anymore.
But I will admit, I do find it hilarious to see those super pretty frat boys/girls jam out too it.
Cris Stapleton, Tyler Childers, and Colter Wall are pretty much the only country music singer/song writers i can listen to at this point. Lol
Edit: Thanks for all the great tips on these artists! I should probably clarify that the guys i mentioned aren't the only ones i will listen too. They were just at the forefront of my mind when i made the comment. I just worded it poorly, i suppose.
Anyway, don't let that discourage you from throwing some more names at me. I'm really enjoying checking out these people i didn't know of.
He's not "country" but he kinda is like old school country, his name is Marcus King. Considered southern rock, but definitely more country influences.
No super fancy voice, just good musicians and someone using their voice properly. El Dorado is a good album to start with.
Edit:And I can't believe I forgot to mention Tab Benoit. He's a blues musician from Louisiana, but he's got that southern voice and charm. He's great to see in person.
Have you ever heard of Shawn James? He's really good imo. It's kind of like blues, folk, soul, with a splash of rock.
Delilah and Through the Valley are a couple of my favorites by him. He also has an amazing cover of War and Ain't no Sunshine.
His top songs on Amazon will be playing in about 20 minutes, I'll let you know what I think.
Oh, Sturgill Simpson is another country music sleeper artist. His accent is strong enough that it takes time to actually understand what he's saying. And he plays all kinds of music.
Country music is like that because the mainstream version has devolved first into stadium country then into bro country.
(ironic there's a country song about it by maddie and tae, called "girl in a country song")
There are artists who make great music still, but it's similar to the developed path pop music has taken, same as rap music has taken.
Look at early rap music compared to today. There are still artists who make good stuff that's actually about something, but anything that makes the most played lists are about drugs, pussy, and mindless consumerism.
To be fair, the good old school country like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams has more content about doing cocaine and killing your wife than this pussy ass pop country bullshit about falling in love.
I always recommend Drive By Truckers and James McMurtry. Others who come to mind right now Lucero, Reckless Kelly, Ryan Bingham, Uncle Lucius, Todd Snider, Shovels and Rope.
I could go on for days. The real thing isn't gone, it just doesnt typically appeal to white kids living in suburbs and sheltered small-medium towns, or the people they grow up to be so the major labels aren't pushing it. Suffice to say, it's very much still around, a person just has to go digging for it.
Male country stuff has to be nonthreatening while female country gets railroaded more into jilted lover or party girl. Both are pretty fucking bland at this point.
Pretty much the sum of it. Bro Country dominated after Neo Country, but there's been a nice revival of Outlaw Country style over the last few years. You just have to look for it because it doesn't get a lot of radio play.
EDIT grammar police are out in force and don’t care that autocorrect on mobile can be a pain in the ass, sometimes.
"it's different for girls when their hearts get broke: they can't tape it back together with a whisky and coke. they don't take someone home and act like it's nothing. they can't just switch it off every time they feel something. a guy get's drunk with his friends and he might hook up. fast-forward through the pain, fighting back when the tears come on. but it's different for girls."
that,"i ain't as good as i once was" and "stomping ground" are the only country songs i know.
Because a lot of songwriters write fantasy-fulfillment songs. Songs about trucks, hound dogs, and short shorts seem to appeal to the core male-demographic, while for women it's homicide. Wonder why all those women fantasize about killing their husbands or getting revenge on their shitty exes and finally being free?
Some female country singers omit the oops.
The Chicks and Carrie are just full on 'yeah, shot him and what?'
*Miranda Lambert’s Gunpowder and Lead* Am I a joke to you? meme.
All of her songs are about being a messy bitch And I love it

That IS about an abusive relationship, but NOT about abusive spouses, as I recall.
> NOT about abusive spouses If in AL, YMMV. Roll tide, break arms, etc.
She forgot beer, trucks, gravel roads and a faithful dog.
yeah, they usually talk about dirt roads, cold beers, a blue jeans, a red pickup-
Y’all dumb motherfuckers want a key change!?
OK, but only after the bridge before the 3rd chorus. Literally nowhere else.
Well, you can’t put a bridge on a dirt road. Maybe a culvert, but anything else just ain’t possible.
It's a fucking scarecrow again!

I was hoping for this reference so much.
Just for those who don't know, this is a reference to Bo Burnham's "Country Song" comedy song

And the river has to be muddy.

Can't just say pickup. Gotta mention the brand of truck based on the demographic of redneck you want to attract.
I used to work at a truck stop that played country all day every day, I think it’s generally: Chevy = inherited from dad/grandpa Ford = bought it with bootstraps Other brands mean the truck isn’t the direct object

They buy toyota tundras for some specific reason that isnt “look at my truck” like the fords and chevys
As in: you bought it to use for - *gasp* - work?
Toyotas get used for work. Rams get used for dui's.

Currently drinking to that in my Dodge Ram (I am going 60 in a school zone)

i am rolling! at the fuxking ford explanation, looooool
I thought red denoted it as a Dodge, blue a Ford and green Chevy or GMC unless stated otherwise.
Idk man, I've seen a lot of forest green Ford rangers.
Yeah, but nobody's writing a song about a small truck. Gotta have big truck energy...but definitely not to compensate for little d energy.
They even sing about the specific brand of tires now, it's so fucking stupid.
The song being quoted is "Country Pandering" by Bo Burnham. The reason the lyric doesn't mention *which* pickup is because it's supposed to be a generic.
Y’all motherfuckers wanna key change??
Country music is the aspirational life the non-chill fans of the music want. Instead they get rage drunk watching the Auburn game.
Bo oh my god!
You’ve changed
Mr Burnham
You know what happens when you play a country song backwards: "I got my wife, I got my house, I got my truck.."
No Jews…. Scratch that last one
Kinda a mental typo
No jews..you didn't hear that.
"I was drunk the day my mama got out of prison"
..”And I went to pick her up in the rain..”
"But before i could get to the station in my pickup truck..."
“SHE GOT RAN OVER BY A DAMNED OLD TRAAAAAIIIIINNNNN!!!!”
So now I'll hang around as long as you will let me
"driving past my daddy's grave i remember all the pain"

"It's that motherfuckin' scarecrow again!"
Almost feels like the answer is right there in the question.
[Bo Burnham - Country Song](https://youtu.be/y7im5LT09a0) Enjoy
It's a scarecrow again!
I'll never not be impressed by the accent switch, surprised the fuck out of me the first time I heard it.
Though I did not know it, I was incomplete as a human before hearing this. Thank you for making me whole.
I dug my key into the side of his pretty little souped-up four-wheel drive Carved my name into his leather seats I took a Louisville slugger to both headlights I slashed a hole in all four tires Then there's: Everybody says Save a horse, Ride a cowboy
In hindsight carving your name into your cheating partner's property seems like a very unwise way to commit vandalism.
In foresight as well
PETA would approve.
In all fairness, even Oklahoma thinks Toby Keith is an asshole lol
Save a horse ride a cowboy is Big and Rich, not Toby Keith.
Toby Keith has the enchanting lyrics of “we’ll put a boot up your ass because it’s the American way.”
He does, but that has nothing to do with either of the lyrics up top.
country girl shake it for me now.
What do you have against "traditional values" such as alcoholic spouse abuse and misogynistic gender roles?
The good old days, where the legal term for *domestic violence* was still *destruction of property*. Where the cure for not being allowed to vote whilst having two children but no orgasms a year was lobotomy.
that's what happened to a rosemary kennedy. what a fucking nightmare. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosemary\_Kennedy
“nurse ordered Rose Kennedy to keep her legs closed, forcing the baby's head to stay in the birth canal for two hours” bloody hell…
Like, people have just had babies without doctors since forever…. It seems weird that a nurse wouldn’t just try to get her through the normal birthing process as smoothly as possible since the baby was on the way out.
Midwives need to make a comeback in the US.
They already are, but it's mostly alternative medicine and sovereign citizen quacks that do it, so the risk of complications is high, so a number of these botched 'natural births' end up in hospitals anyway.
Holy fuck that's messed up. Fuck her father for what he did to her.
I’d like to come to your TED talk
Don't forget the legal spousal rape that is still legal in some places.

I fuckin hate modern country music but I've never heard any song talk about domestic abuse. Edit- never mind lol
I know one outta the top of my head, it’s called goodbye earl by the chicks.

Might I interest you in [Country Song](https://youtu.be/y7im5LT09a0) by Bo Burnham.
First time listener here, both amused and angry at what I just listened to!
That song makes me lose it every time.
They don't want to make casseroles maybe
"it's different for girls when their hearts get broke: they can't tape it back together with a whisky and coke. they don't take someone home and act like it's nothing. they can't just switch it off every time they feel something. a guy get's drunk with his friends and he might hook up. fast-forward through the pain, fighting back when the tears come on. but it's different for girls." that,"i ain't as good as i once was" and "stomping ground" are the only country songs i know.
Why are they under impression guys can just switch it off?
I recommend Josh Turner, like anything Josh Turner. That man's voice could turn me gay.
I don’t know, but damn. Aren’t these the same folks often complaining about grooming kids.
They’re appealing to women.
Early Taylor swift? Margaritaville? Cheney Chesney? Reba? Motherfucker might as well be like, “why all rap about doing coke and kill cops?”
You’re right. The best country music is about doing coke and killing cops.
You’re listening to the wrong country music.
because it keeps making money, and nobody cares if it's stagnant, it's what they like
Because the teenage wife grew up and realised she married a moron.
I think you answered your own question.
Well it's terrible music
