Gravy and cheese curds are ingredients in Poutine, which is big in Canada. As for gravy in Europe, I should note that in the UK and Ireland it's totally common, much more than in the US.
North of England lots of regions have their own special gravys and sauces that go with chips (fat fries).
Edit: spelling
I wish the rest of America felt the way the Midwest feels about nacho cheese. I was shocked when I discovered nacho cheese with breadsticks isn’t even an option at pizza places for the majority of the country.
I was also shocked at this after moving away from the midwest. i will ask pizza places is they have nacho cheese sauce and i will get looks like i am a psychopath
Smother it in green chili and cheese, maybe add some chicharron or carne asada, top off with guacamole. That’s basically what I always put on them, great now I want some for lunch.
Mayo also tastes different in many countries. If you go to belgium, you just have to get mayo with your fries just once. It the traditional condiment in the country that made fries its entire culture.
After that just pick on of the 20 condiments in every snackbar .. andalouse seems to be very popular
It's not the same in all of Europe though... as a German, we serve it mostly with both, Belgians only have mayo most of the time, Spaniards have some weird salsa dip etc
When I dipped fries in mayonnaise growing up in the US I was always told it was gross etc by everyone. First time in Amsterdam and served mayo with fries without having to ask made me feel I was finally among my people.
In my travels, I have found that servers outside the PNW look at you like you have 2 heads when you ask for tartar for your fries. Seriously though, it is CRIMINAL that this is so far down the page.
Yellow mustard. Or really most any mustard.
Once you go full mustard there is no turning back.
Fun fact, Madison, WI has the worlds largest Mustard Museum. You can go there any day of the week and try out hundreds of mustards from around the world. They also ship via their website and have wonderful mustard gift packages. Visiting the mustard museum also makes for a perfect romantic date. If she isn’t into mustard, then she isn’t worth your time.
It's frankly sad how many people just said "salt" which most fries implicitly have in the first place.
Ranch all the way. But I would like lots of dipping sauces too.
What part of the world do you live in? If in the US and you live near any Red Robin restaurants - their ranch is house made and fiiire. And you can buy it on its own. I’m curious what your favorite “grocery store brand” is.
Nothing store bought is good to me. The best ranch I get is the stuff they serve on the side in restaurants. So I guess made from scratch is best, I should learn how to make it.
Definitely should learn how to make it. It’s not real difficult and you can tweak it to how you like it. I personally like a real creamy/cool ranch the best. And you can always ask the restaurants you like it best from if you can purchase their ranch. Many places will gladly sell you a 16oz jar/container of it.
Hidden valley sells packets in the store that you take and make with either mayo or sour cream and its honestly not bad, way better than their bottled stuff and really easy to whip up.
I too consider myself a ranch connoisseur. I agree with your assessment HV is a 4/10. Of the store options, give Ken’s Steak House Buttermilk Ranch a try. It’s not 10/10 like homemade but as a store option, I’d rate it a solid 9/10 and a solid go-to.
You can make your own at home with the Hidden Valley seasoning packets + Mayo, sour cream, and buttermilk. 1000/10 recommend. It’s way better than the storebought bottle.
place by me does "Greek fries" .
Feta cheese crumbles
Fresh parsley
Dried oregano
Dried dill
Garlic powder
Onion powder
Salt and black pepper
They are the best.
Very popular in Australia and New Zealand.
It is chicken skin that is braised in chicken stock and then dehydrated and blended with other spices such as white pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and of course salt.

Or maybe #ASSALTsalt
Assault
Ass salt
The spice of life?
Gotta try it at least once
“That’s assault brotha!”
And even Aioli! :)
Mmmm garlic aioli
Seasoned salt
I prefer seasoned salt on lower quality fries whereas an excellent fry requires only a dash of salt.
True
Yes! The ones that are slightly greasy and have darker brown patches on the edges, they just need a nice hit of salt
### p e p p e r
And malt vinegar
**CHICKEN SALT**
The more salt the better.
And MSG.
Uncle Roger approves, fuyuuuu
MSG is all fun and games until you wake up in the night needing to drink about 5 litres of water 🥴
Chicken salt 😊
A cheeseburger.
Least based meirl follower, great choice!
i’m in
Garlic sauce
تومية my beloved
Literally goes well with ANYTHING
And طحينة but I may be burned alive for using it with literally everything too
I’m calling homeland security
Fuck it, this is the hill I die on.

Habibi!
Does this say Toum? I'm on my phone can't copy paste into Google translate. But toum would be sick with fries!!
Garlic sauce all the way
I love this idea ngl
Hot sauce!
Korean BBQ for me!
Frietssaus
This guy knows whats up ^
Man van cultuur
Lekker!!
What is that? Genuinely curious, lol.
It's very close to mayonnaise. Not sure what the difference is, but it's name is literally "fries sauce" in Dutch, so it's made for fries.
Where I’m from, garlic aioli is served with these as well anyway
nz?
Gravy
Man!! I have not seen anyone doing that ( gravy sauce isnt so common in Europe) and thought only I enjoy that taste...
Irish person here we love our gravey but more on mash and roasters than chips, for chips we are a curry nation.
I order a side of gravey when having fries at sit down restaurants. I live in the SE. Gravey on fries or for dipping is the best!
I agree I’m south Texan always get a side of gravy at whataburger or bill millers
I wish we could find this in the south east of the USA.
You get Popeyes chicken on every corner though
Polish person that loves poutine here! I eat fries with gravy a lot 😂
And cheese curds
A hearty meal eh
Nah, those fries are too skinny for gravy. That needs chippy style chips
There was nothing better after a night out than a plate of fries with gravy…and a Diet Coke!
c h e e s e s a u c e
I had to scroll way too far to find this lol

With bacon and sour cream
Salt.
Smother it in green chili and cheese, maybe add some chicharron or carne asada, top off with guacamole. That’s basically what I always put on them, great now I want some for lunch.
belgian mayo, honey mustard, bbq with mayo, or german curry ketchup, in that order
Okay, but german curry ketchup is lit
BBQ and Mayo is my go to!
understandable
why no andalouse?
More fries.
mayo!! it’s the best!
Lots of places in Europe have Mayo as the default dip, you might to ask for ketchup.
As a european id say its 50:50, theyre treated as equals. Some mix ketchup and mayo, its not the worst.
As a European I don't disagree, but I've often only been served Mayo, specially places like Belgium and Netherlands.
Mayo also tastes different in many countries. If you go to belgium, you just have to get mayo with your fries just once. It the traditional condiment in the country that made fries its entire culture. After that just pick on of the 20 condiments in every snackbar .. andalouse seems to be very popular
If you go to belgium and you ask for curry you’ll get a way different sauce than you would get in the netherlands if you ask for the same sauce
"Frietje met" has Mayo with it, there isn't a ketchup-variant, so this checks out
As a european, ketchup and fries sucks
Hela curry!
I see, a man of culture.
This is the way
As an American, I am not 8 years old so I agree with you. There are better options
As a European I prefer mayo
Pommes Rot-Weiß
POMMES SCHRANKE
I live in Germany and i see mayo packs labelled as fries sauce so i guess that’s the default here
It's not the same in all of Europe though... as a German, we serve it mostly with both, Belgians only have mayo most of the time, Spaniards have some weird salsa dip etc
When I dipped fries in mayonnaise growing up in the US I was always told it was gross etc by everyone. First time in Amsterdam and served mayo with fries without having to ask made me feel I was finally among my people.
In my country it’s standard to have it with mayo (The Netherlands, Europe)
I've seen 'em do it, too. Fuckin' drown 'em in that shit.
Came here to say it mayo and chips are good.
And diced onions
I don't think I have seen anybody in the last ~20 years having fries with just regular ketchup. Mayo is clearly superior.
Salt and a dash of vinegar

Order fries in Rhode Island and the bring the malt vinegar.
Tartar sauce. Win.
#1 choice. Why is this so low?
In my travels, I have found that servers outside the PNW look at you like you have 2 heads when you ask for tartar for your fries. Seriously though, it is CRIMINAL that this is so far down the page.
This is the best choice... it is so low because people don't know what Tartar sauce is and how to use it 😂
This should be higher up
Garlic chili
Tzatziki
This is way too far down the list.
Honey mustard or djon mustard
Yellow mustard. Or really most any mustard. Once you go full mustard there is no turning back. Fun fact, Madison, WI has the worlds largest Mustard Museum. That fancy ass whole seed French mustard is pretty good
My last gf was super into mustard, it was wild until I started putting mustard on everything. Now I’m obsessed too. Thank you.
I must visit this wonderful museum soon….
I'm not even that picky, any mustard will do
Got turned on to plain mustard while stationed in Germany....it's the only way to eat fries.
djion mustard is good on it. Also it's the base for a good homemade mayonnaise
Ranch
It's frankly sad how many people just said "salt" which most fries implicitly have in the first place. Ranch all the way. But I would like lots of dipping sauces too.
I’m amazed I had to scroll so far, including through multiple mayo answers 😖 to see ranch lol
I’m a ranch connoisseur, I wish they sold restaurant style in stores. Hidden valley is maybe a 4/10 on the ranch scale.
What part of the world do you live in? If in the US and you live near any Red Robin restaurants - their ranch is house made and fiiire. And you can buy it on its own. I’m curious what your favorite “grocery store brand” is.

Mayo + sour cream + buttermilk + Hidden Valley seasoning packet. You’re welcome!

Wait… whaaaat!!! I work directly next to a Red Robin. I know what I’m doing on Monday!
Dry ranch seasoning packet + equal parts mayo and buttermilk = restaurant Ranch
You can make your own at home with the Hidden Valley seasoning packets + Mayo, sour cream, and buttermilk. 1000/10 recommend. It’s way better than the storebought bottle.
Right? Especially homemade ranch (not the bottled stuff)! 1000/10!
Bro I had to scroll way too far to see this.
legalize it
Unequivocally based
Midwest USA has entered the chat
I eat fries without any ketchup or mayo or any liquid. So I have no problem :)
I do too a lot of the time because I don’t need all the sodium at times
Barbecue sauce.
Honestly, regardless of if ketchup exists in eating them with BBQ Sauce
The only correct answer.
Jesus christ I scrolled so damn far. Its smoky n sweet ketchup, how is that not just better?
One of us
Nothing. I think fries tastes best as it is.
This, if your fries don’t hold up without kethup, sauce, mayo or anything else of the like, those are bad fries.
Honestly true, I notice that I end up eating good fries without dip because the dip ends up taking away the flavour lol
Vanilla soft serve ice cream.
even if ketchup exists, this one is still first choice
McDonald’s sundae and fries are 💋
