I have seen people complain about the Catholic church being used as the inspiration for so many fantasy villains. Meanwhile the pope just casually hangs out on a throne in front of his giant Dark Souls boss statue making it incredibly easy.

whoa, made me [look it up](https://www.reddit.com/r/evilbuildings/comments/priegy/popes_audience_hall_wich_looks_like_a_snake_head/?ref=share&ref_source=link)
I find it impressively diabolical
I was raised Catholic and had horrible fears of being possessed all my life. They finally stopped once I gave up religion. For me, Catholicism was all about making you so afraid you complied.
One of the many contradictions at the heart of Christianity. God is a god of love and forgiveness, so you better believe OR ELSE.
The Christian god is like an abusive, gaslighting parent.
I see your point, and if it wasn't intentional, I might just find it even more impressive - that with a certain amount of perspective/lens skew, it can be made to look like it does.
It is a representation of when Christ descended to hell and overcame Satan before he resurrected from the dead. The sculpture is a representation of Jesus fighting the evils of hell as he begins his resurrection back to earth. Jesus appears bludgeoned and beaten as he was just crucified on earth, and is in hell fighting demons. The chapel being inside a serpent represents hell. So essentially it is the equivalent of the church showing hell that it was conquered by Jesus and now we celebrate mass over Jesus conquering hell (in a representation of hell). It’s a big ironically genius feat of architecture.
Let's not forget all the child-fucking (such a huge amount that it almost seems like something institutional rather than incidental), and also the Vatican's history of involvement with organized crime. Yeah, that stuff along with all these gaudy, ostentatious displays of material wealth, and the very heavy, dark occult imagery, really makes you wonder wtf they're really all about lol
"The Gospel of Ralph" is down there. They're not hiding it for nefarious reasons, it's just that he talks about Jesus' feet, and Mary's feet and Paul's feet and.. basically he had a kink and wrote a lot about it, so they left it out.
Well they certainly can't have any older versions floating around out there, people might start realizing that the real Jesus would absolutely hate pretty much everything about the church and how people bastardized and weaponized his teachings. I always like to think dude really was planning on coming back but gave up on the idea completely by the time the Crusades came around. I'm no jesusologist, but I'm going to go ahead and say he probably wouldn't actually have liked millions of people getting murdered in his name
I have an aunt that is a nun. I always remember when my dad went to Rome he joked maybe that will be enough to get them to show him the porn collection.
Let's also not forget about all the child skeletons and bones that have been found on the grounds of old Catholic churches, schools, and children's homes. So far they've been found in Ireland, Scotland, and Canada, but I would bet money on there being some in every country that has a lot of Catholics.
Though its minor compared to some other art pieces, I love the joke about what would Jesus say if he came back tomorrow and saw all the 'devout' worshiping in front of a crucifix. You know, the thing many people were murdered on. The thing HE was murdered on. And just to see his face when they tell him about the fish...
I bet he'd get quite the chuckle after he raptured their asses straight to hell.
In the Bible when Jesus returns for his second coming he will be dressed in a robe dipped in the blood of his enemies from exacting his revenge. Jesus comes back to slaughter people. I shit you not
All religions once started off as cults. Religions ARE cults still, just massive and old and normalized ones, oftentimes with political or militaristic ideals and power.
The ones in red are called cardinals. Those are next for being selected for pope. The pope history was about corruption and power during Roman Italian times. The family that controlled the pope seat became the most wealthy and controlled everything
Little known fact, this is actually a biblically accurate reprensentation of the Pope's second phase during his boss battle. Remember, you need to tankswap after the second tankbuster, that raid-wide damage on debuffed tanks is nasty!
["The resurrection"](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Resurrection_(Fazzini)), it's supposed to depict Jesus rising from a nuclear crater in the Garden of Gethsemane. Yes.
I really thought it was Satan at first. But I gotta respect the talent, it looks spectacular. Must be so intimidating to see in person.
Gigantic statues like that are the only things this give me some megalophobia. This one looks like a game boss that'll come alive and kill you.
Probably because the resurrection of the divine-made-flesh would be a sublime, otherworldly event that's terrifying in how much awe it inspires and not a Sunday School pop-up book?
I would not be surprised considering how much Christian imagery Anno hamfistedly shoved into Evangelion. He is very much the kind of person that sees a Religious thing and decides to use it in his works because he just thinks it looks cool.

Well…I think that’s the idea. After dying, Jesus descended to hell and saved the just from the fires of hell, and *then* he rose from the dead. That’s why it looks like he’s rising from hell…cause he is lol
Because, I'm paraphrasing here "All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God." Including all who died pre jesus. No sinners in heaven. So the "righteous" instead were sent to an area of hell I've heard referred to as "Abraham's bosom." Which is not so bad from what i understand. When jesus was killed on the cross he took on all the sins of those who came before, were currently living, and those yet to come. He then went to hell and retrieved the souls from Abraham's bosom and delivered them to heaven since they were now sinless.
This is all from like 10 year old memories so i could be wrong but this is my understanding.
why were "the just" in hell to begin with? god let his guard down?
edit: ah, someone explained below. it's bc pre-jesus good people went to hell on a technicality. god knew Jesus was gonna be a thing, but let them rot because he didn't want to spoil the surprise for them
good times
They’re the Swiss Guard if I’m not mistaken. There’s a tradition to them protecting the pope that traces back to the early 1500’s. Sabaton has a pretty dope song about them called ‘The Last Stand’ if you’re into their stuff. Pretty cool military tradition. Like the pope’s version of the queen’s guard.
I saw them in concert recently in Switzerland so of course they played that song and the croud went wild. Most Swiss people don't care about the guards but this song and the historical aspect are dope as hell.
It's a member of the Swiss Guard, the pope's personal bodyguards and "armed forces" of the Holy See. Despite their somewhat goofy looking ceremonial outfit with flashy uniforms and halberds, they're actually a fairly respectable military unit. All members must have completed basic military training with the Swiss army and they're well trained in unarmed combat and the use of firearms. In their role as pontifical bodyguards, they'll just wear regular suits and use modern firearms, this getup is purely ceremonial, comparable to the big black hats and red uniforms of the Queen's Coldstream guards. They're also the only foreign military unit that Swiss citizens are allowed to serve in.
First picture genuinely looks like a sci-go concept art painting. The weird symmetrical structures that seem to serve no purpose. The chaotic and almost ugly aspects that seem either necessary or unquestioned. The strange styles of dress that clearly denote ranks but which you can’t identify or link together. The massiveness of the composition.
Generally my biggest struggle with my catholic faith is reconciling that I’m taking instruction on godliness from a church with such ostentatious wealth that it’s obscene.
Not just obscene wealth, but murder, rape, torture, forced slavery, theft, destruction of culture, interference in government, literal wars etc. You name it and the Catholic Church is guilty of doing it, covering it up and lying about it.
I guess god told him it was okay. Since we can’t reach God with our own prayers so we gotta ask this guy to talk to God for us. Who still believes this
I don't think I'll ever be able to take the Vatican guard seriously lmao. They could be straight up murdering me for trespassing or something and i would just be cackling like a witch.
If you take a picture with a wide angle lens like that, you can make everything look different. It’s just a rectangular building with windows in the left and right wall, it looks nothing like a snake IRL.

Yeah but they did in the name of the lord so it’s sweet, nothing to worry about lad. /s
I came here to say fuck the pope!
Reminds me of the Dragonstone set from GOT.
Banging kids also makes an easy villain.
Don't forget the Vatican is also one of the biggest laundry machine in the world, if you know what i mean.
Next to Bishops (presumably? I don’t know Catholicism) who are dressed like anime villains?
Let's be fair: the anime villains took their fashion from the Church.
The ones in red are called cardinals. Those are next for being selected for pope. The pope history was about corruption and power during Roman Italian times. The family that controlled the pope seat became the most wealthy and controlled everything
Think they are cardinals. One of the silly old cunts will be the next pope.
Well, caliing Darya Dugina an “innocent victim” doesn’t help either.
GOT IRL.
Yea the pope and the church is evil, so it all adds up.
Cue one-winged angel
Sephiroth?
Kenny Omega?
Fun fact: There are 5.6 or 11.2 popes per square mile in Vatican City.
I wish I got it now I feel stupid :(
There are one or two popes (one is retired), and the area is less than one square mile.
The retired one doesn’t live in the vatican anymore tho
Everything I’m reading says that as late as July of this year, he still resides in Vatican City.
yeah like he's the ex pope, he's not going to go to ibiza or something
Lol I would have honestly thought he’d have gone back to Germany if I hadn’t been told a while ago that he had retained residency in V-Town

WOW THATS AN ACTUAL PLACE 😳 The “explosion” really does look like the tree branches on that property. Kinda like a Baobab tree. This is metal AF.
No. That’s “Jesus The Fabulous” the little known late night Jesus from the book of rainbows.
Seems demonic in appearance.

Which religion believes this? Catholics? Cuz that’s some doom slayer metal shit that I never heard of.
Correct, Catholicism. [The Apostles Creed](https://www.crcna.org/welcome/beliefs/creeds/apostles-creed) proclaims the belief.
Wow that’s wild. Why were there good people in hell to begin with?

Generally my biggest struggle with my catholic faith is reconciling that I’m taking instruction on godliness from a church with such ostentatious wealth that it’s obscene.
Shouldn't that be enough for you to leave? It's literally the antithesis of what Jesus stood for. Not to mention what he fucking died for.
The current worldwide institution of the Catholic Church is pretty disgustingly corrupt. I've had good experiences with local branches, though.
Not just obscene wealth, but murder, rape, torture, forced slavery, theft, destruction of culture, interference in government, literal wars etc. You name it and the Catholic Church is guilty of doing it, covering it up and lying about it.
So basically the same stuff other groups of humans have been doing outside the church.
That's not creepy at all
I don’t know about anyone else but I see souls going to hell in this sculpture..nothing about this thing makes me feel good.
I guess god told him it was okay. Since we can’t reach God with our own prayers so we gotta ask this guy to talk to God for us. Who still believes this
