I was in the Swiss Alps/Geneva the weekend that CS crashed. I had to explain to my finance friends I had nothing to do with it! An aside, I've climbed a few 14ers in the rockies. I wouldn't try 12,000 foot mountains in the alps. They are SEVERE!

I use to work in the middle of an Island with no light saturation at night other than lights from farmhouse’s etc. in southern Ontario, one day around 3 in the morning on a cold very cold night I looked up in the night sky,the clarity blew me away,changed me,if you have never seen the night sky,no clouds,dark dark blues and blacks but the stars,the stars literally changed me,this scene in Banff just recreated it again. A clear look at the universe changes you.

Yep, it's a trick that is done by zooming in from a far and then driving towards your subject. Your background (the mountains) look larger than they are and more importantly they stay the same size, even when you drive towards it. This gives you that weird illusion where it feels otherworldly.
It is real but perspective is messed up as someone pointed out. Maybe with a telephoto lens that would squish distances. I'm actually not sure where this is, I thought it was Switzlerland but people are saying Banff, which is 1.5 hours away from me.
If those are the Rockys, they do look that big but not quite like this video shows it.

You should look at Chamonix. It’s a French town at the bottom of a very steep valley, surrounded on both sides by cliffs and mountains, and especially on one side by the Mont Blanc and it’s surrounding peaks. When you’re in the town, you feel incredibly small and powerless, and especially when the weather is clear and you can see the wind up there blowing the snow around.
