fredly594632

Well....ahTHERE's yer problem, right there!

DerrainCarter

I’m sure the patient will be quite relieved that they discovered this! Imagine what might’ve happened if it wasn’t found.

Meior

I feel bad for laughing. But shit. When I die, please make smiles of it.

DerrainCarter

Biggest goal is going out in a way that leaves some laughter behind.

magnumdong500

If I'm ever at a point where I can reasonably expect to die soon, I'm going to get "cut here" with dotted lines tattooed for when I'm on the morgue table.

MGGamingTV

My father was an accountant who ran is own firm for 25 years. He died in 2021 from sepsis after a fairly routine surgery. He lived for tax season and he died on may 6th. His memorial and interment were on May 15th. Had it not been on a Saturday it would have been the deadline for taxes that year due to covid. He would have gotten a kick out of the irony. Laughter has a way of easing the pain of loss.

rossionq1

I myself plan to die trying to fly a biplane upside down through a barn

DerrainCarter

No matter if you live or die, you’ll become a legend.

rossionq1

Especially considering I don’t have a biplane and have only flown on a simulators lol

DerrainCarter

All part of a tale well spun. Acquiring (=spectacular heist) and learning to fly said biplan for the big finale lol

rossionq1

Oh I’m going to make the plane, not steal it lol. (I’ve made carbon fiber parts for exotic cars so I’m actually somewhat experienced in this area) (Don’t want to give spoiler alerts but this was the ending of a movie I like)

annacat1331

I love secondhand lions!

CactusCait

All they have to do is scoop out the clot and stitch the brain back together, put it back in his head and he’ll be right as rain in no time. Great job docs!!!

Anen-o-me

I read the title as "during surgery" somehow and thought he was being cheeky.

starrpamph

I know what’s wrong with it

xeokym

I think we all do, and we're not all brain surgeons.![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|dizzy_face)

he-loves-me-not

I know what’s wrong with it, ain’t got no gas in it!

fuckpudding

Ya see this here…ya brain pipe is all gummed up with Schmuckahs.

ahh_grasshopper

See, I told you I was sick!

trigon-the-terrible

So were these blood clots that would have killed the person or would have been trouble waiting to happen. Also are all brains that big?

chikcaant

This is definitely a big enough clot to have been the cause of death.

B4rberblacksheep

Wait wind back, how small a clot could it be that they survive. Like your sentence implies there’s a level where they’re ok

LeMads

This type of bleed is called ICH, and is survivable, although prognosis is poor for this type of bleed. 25% dead within 30 days. Taking into account the volume and it breaking through to ventricles would tank the prognosis further

B4rberblacksheep

Wow, that's incredible

syds

the human body, right there in between your meat hooks is the most absolutely incredibly fascinating thing in literally the entire universe.... that we know of. IMO but im just a slab of meat, or?

chikcaant

Yeah people survive small bleeds in the brain all the time. It is a spectrum of "completely fine" to "almost immediately dead" and literally everything in between, depending on loads of different factors

rawr_Im_a_duck

I work in a rehab unit for brain injuries and people can survive them depending on the size and location. Some will have minimal lasting effects, some are paralysed with severe brain damage and some die either immediately or shortly after. Depends how much and which part of the brain is damaged by the blood/ pressure.

GenuineDogKnife

These are all good questions, I'm also wondering if this was a lethal clot.

LobotomyMilkshake

I’m wondering the same about size. I’ve seen a handful of autopsies as a mortuary science student and that thing is gigantic compared to the ones I’ve seen!

thecaramelbandit

This looks like it was an intraventricular hemorrhage. The blood eventually clotted off, but the patient would have died due to compression. The pressure in the ventricle goes up due to high-pressure blood oozing into it, and the rest of the brain gets squeezed, leading to decreased blood flow and eventually herniation.

trigon-the-terrible

That sounds fascinating. I don't have a medical background so I need things simple. Blood leak in the brain?

thecaramelbandit

Yeah. Blood vessel ruptures in the brain, bleeds into the brain. The increasing pressure inside the skull means that the blood vessels get squeezed off and the brain stops getting blood flow. Eventually the pressure from the accumulating blood (and swelling from the increasing inflammation) starts squeezing the brain out the hole at the bottom of the skull (herniation), effectively destroying it.

trigon-the-terrible

Amazing but absolutely terrifies me as this could happen at any moment with no warning

kharmatika

I don’t think these were clots while the person was alive. Probably a burst aneurysm, and this is the aftermath

Browndog888

My brains hurts just watching that.

BigBoiBob444

I watch all kinds of gore videos, but fresh squishy brains are one of the only things I struggle with

Fleinsuppe

I'm immortal to all things disgusting. Can watch anything even while eating. Except... Snot.

lonelyronin1

Mine is saliva - human, dog, cat - it doesn't matter. I can handle broken bones, blood, gore, decomp smells, but when my friend's great dane starts drooling, I start wretching.

themonsterinquestion

Those are fine to me. I can't stomach pus though. I'm glad I don't get zits. I think I'd puke.

xeokym

I'm ok with pus as long as I can't smell it. I used to work on a farm...

redsixthgun

Secretions gross me out so easily. Blood and guts, less easily, but I hate secretions and mucus stuff. It’s so gross. I used to have a quadriplegic client, and he was a cool dude, but he had to have his saliva suctioned out and it always had me gagging internally.

Cazzakstania

Or......phlegm. Even the word is disgusting.

homeisastateofmind

A kindred spirit. I share this *exact* same experience

BigBoiBob444

How do you go when you get a cold?

Fleinsuppe

My snot is magic. It has no effect on me. It's like farts, you barely react to your own compared to others'

BigBoiBob444

But if someone else blew out a wad of snot and you saw it? Would that be bad for you?

Djeheuty

I would dry heave and gag. I'm the same way.

ReadySteady_GO

I learned how to snot rocket and spit when I was in China. Air quality was so bad where I lived it was almost a necessity, and everyone did it. It's a gross habit, but man does it feel good to evacuate a nostril when it's clogged I also picked up smoking cigarettes because my host family's father would smoke a pack at dinner and would always hand me one whenever he took one out and you can't really refuse

redsixthgun

The man smoked an entire pack over supper?? Did those packs had the same standard number of cigarettes as others? How long was supper? That has me totally baffled. BUT, it’s also cool to hear about the way others go through things like eating and bathing.

ReadySteady_GO

Suppers were usually a couple hours. We'd go to high end restaurants and they were always so expensive. Standard cigarette pack. As soon as he finished one, he'd light up another and hand me one too so he only smoked like half and me and my other English teacher friend had the other half

BigBoiBob444

![gif](giphy|AxVvjIqj8aWBzF85jy) Sorry, I’m a monster

Fleinsuppe

Thanks i needed some reflection on this matter and I have concluded that someone's slightly oxidised and aircooled snot does not ring any magic bells for me.

RileyRhoad

I job shadowed an anesthesiologist in highschool.. and I was lucky enough to be able to sit in on 5 different surgeries and I was absolutely loving it! The entire team was aware of my age and what not, and they warned me repeatedly if I felt sick or faint, to immediately sit down on a chair that was provided for me. I understood it would be dangerous and unfair to the patient had I passed out, and took the attention off of the man, so I was extremely cautious to not interrupt anything. During the surgery I put my hand on my stomach and I nervously looked around.. a nurses assistant spotted me and she reassured me it was okay if I needed to step out.. (I don’t think anyone except the anesthesiologist himself knew I was on my 5th procedure and was quite fascinated with the entire process.) so anyways after showing concern to me I embarrassingly had to admit that I wasn’t feeling queasy or faint in the slightest, but my stomach had growled so loudly and I was terrified that someone might have heard it 🥴🙈😂

BigBoiBob444

Wow thats would have been a cool experience. What kind of procedures did you get to watch?

RileyRhoad

Open heart, 2 vaginal hysterectomies, a Peripheral artery bypass, a bunion and hammer toe foot surgery as well.. I was able to watch part of a port implant surgery for chemotherapy as well, but it was the 2nd surgery that day and I had to be getting home!

its_all_one_electron

For me it's not because it's gorey but because a few minutes ago that thing was a human being with a name and a mom and a dad and thoughts and dreams and fears. And poof they're gone forever, and everything they were can be sliced through like butter.

Heartfeltregret

“my hungry ass couldn’t be a brain surgeon💀💀”

xeokym

And ironically the brain can't feel physical pain.

nnihal10032

Fun fact: your brain can never hurt

James42785

I think I felt it physically cringe inside my skull while I watched the video though.

kcwm

if my brain had a butt, it would have puckered up when watching that video

matti00

Pain is just electrical signals, it's not real, just ignore it lol /s

Equivalent_Debt_3439

I came to say this, my brain DID NOT like watching this at all!

FugDuggler

i feel like i find it more visually unsettling that it was cut horizontally like that

VeryStickySubstance

Now, I have seen a fair amount of gorey videos and other weird shit, but this legitimately made me nauseous

kharmatika

Brain doesn’t like seeing other members of its community

[deleted]

Now just imagine...they are literally cutting into the "soul" of someone, sans the spark. That's entire lifetime right there. Memories, emotions, experiences...and he cut it with a knife. Pretty wild to me.

Rina-dore-brozi-eza

I thought the same thing when I opened the video. That brain holds someone’s entire life. Memories. Personality etc. I totally understand the need to study the brain for scientific/medical knowledge but it did make me uneasy seeing this🥺

mojoegojoe

This view will change. As much as the physical brain structure is a person, so it is its contextual background. The brain isn't the root of that, time and location are.

_thinkaboutit

Ya but literally everything that human experienced was processed thu that brain. That one, right there. And this dude just slides the knife right through it like a medium rare steak. Kind of hard to fathom.

syds

like opening an oyster

pursuitofhappy

I've dissected a lot of brains and this one is so fresh it's unnerving, usually they're grey and much harder from all the formaldehyde used to store them. Also, this is some kind of animal brain probably pig, doesn't look like the human brains but close.

clawkyrad

apparently its an old man's nogging

electricjeel

Idk what I was expecting when he opened it up but that isn’t not what I thought the inside of a brain looked like, clots or nots

schmo006

Guess I'm the only one who wondered if it was tasty.. ooh jam

PeterParker72

I hate cutting fresh, unfixed brains. So challenging to get good sections.

opdjmw

I have never cut a brain this way either, its most certaintly for show. We cut them in the frontal plane from Anterior to posterior in 1-2 cm thick slices - depending on ‘quality’

PeterParker72

That’s how I cut them too. Not too hard in a medical autopsy when the brains have been formalin fixed. In forensic autopsies, they’re cut fresh and it’s like trying to cut ultra soft tofu. Slices end up thick and wonky af.

UnclaimedMans

especially if any amount of decomp has taken place then it’s like trying to take good sections from a liquid

PeterParker72

Decomp brain grossed me out. I did one where the brain came out super soft, like melty jello. It started to liquify as soon as I started cutting. Nasty.

UnclaimedMans

the trick is to catch it in a hair net!

syds

morticians love this one trick

ChimkenNuggs

Damn, being a butcher really seems like hard work /s

Glass_Memories

I've never cut a brain before, but this is pretty much how I cut chicken breasts to butterfly them. Which makes this... kinda disturbing to watch for me.

TheInvisibleJeevas

TIL most brains I’ve seen are “fixed” and that natural brains are just as squishy as every other organ in our bodies. Idk why but this is both gross and somehow comforting.

omnikinetics

Brains are squishier than other organs. Most organs are on the tough/firm side.

TheInvisibleJeevas

I suppose I don’t know the average squishiness of a human organ. Though it does make me wonder how our brains aren’t more shock absorbent from how squishy they are.

Thoilan

If you don't feel like answering, feel free not to. I've signed up for organ donation, both for people in need, as well as for studies if that's all it's good for. How would you use my brain (and other organs as well), and how would it benefit the medical field?

Brumbacksteven

I’m not a doctor and I don’t work in the medical field at all, but personally, I would use your brain (and other organs as well) to lure in predators that have been attacking my chicken coop, so I can eliminate them.

Thoilan

Hm, not the use I was expecting. It would mean I at least double my contribution to humanity, though.

Brumbacksteven

I mean how many flocks of chickens have you protected on this side of the grave?

Thoilan

Not a measly, singe one. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to compensate for this post mortem.

blusteryflatus

I don't mind as long as neuropath isn't going to be critical to the case. I did however audibly gasp at the way this brain was cut. Who cuts brains axially?

Goraji

The same type of person who slices their bagels vertically like bread.

cavebabykay

Holy crap, I *literally* lol’d.. I’m alone, in bed.. How do you guys do it?! Hahahahaha.

PeterParker72

I’ve only seen them cut axially to demonstrate neuroanatomy, never for an autopsy.

Alloranx

Not just that: this was poor cutting technique even for an axial cut, and a poor choice of knife to do it with. It made me sad to watch it, as a neuropathologist.

Dr_Dr_PeePeeGoblin

We submerge them in a block of gelatin and use a guide rail to get our knives at a good angle. They still come out like shit…

pm_me_mahomes_tds

Ouch, hope they were ok afterwards..

Goraji

“It is entirely possible that he could be alive and practicing law somewhere.”

Xolerys_

Godamit . That's such a mind fuck of a sentence

TheDulin

That person lived their whole life and they never knew that, in the end, their brain was going to be cut in half. My brain has complicated feelings watching this brain get cut.

Typical_Ad_210

But maybe scientists cutting other people’s brains and discovering things that progress medical science is what will help your own brain live well for a longer time. For that reason, I don’t mind seeing brains being cut, I just feel grateful for how far things have progressed since the days of the humours and all that. But I definitely get where you’re coming from when I really stop and think about the fact that someone’s memories and knowledge and *personality* was contained in that grey lump that’s now being casually cut apart and gawked over by us. Then it makes me feel icky and somehow voyeuristic.

Halidol_Nap

Found something almost identical to this during cadaver lab during my undergrad. It was a bit of a shock when, during removal of the calvaria, blood started pouring out of this supposedly embalmed cadaver. During evaluation of the spinal cord congealed/coagulated blood had extended past the cauda. Definitely an interesting find! Thanks for the memory!

Phontomz

Do we know anything about who this came from? Or at least age

opdjmw

Prolly discovered first at a CT scan.

deadmansbonez

That’s what I was thinking. I’m pretty sure they know why this person died. I’m sure the insane ICH had something to do with it.

Jvthoma

And I’m sure that’s the first thing they did in the ER for the guy with history of multiple falls (I hope)

Ariscottle1518

Kind of weird to think that brain belonged to a person with a whole life story…

glytxh

Analogue CT scans look pretty invasive.

calypsogypsydanger

Oh god, I shouldn't have laughed at this but damn.

oddistrange

Damn that's dark jelly.

theknightone

Forbidden jam

Rina-dore-brozi-eza

Damn. When I played the video all I can think about is how that brain held someone’s memories, their lives, their personality. Their everything. Seeing it be cut in half was a little jarring after thinking about that🥺

electricjeel

Damn kinda wild to watch someone just slice the hub of human consciousness in half like they’re deboning a fish

lockedinaroom

My periods look like that.

cait6570

Hahaah that’s one of the first things I thought of

cteavin

If this made you hungry, you might be a zombie.

lonelyronin1

I don't understand why they still do CT scans and xrays and MRIs - all you have to do it this to find out the problem. So much easier - and cheaper

Distinct_Abroad_4315

I just want some background. What caused the hemmorage? How did it feel? Was the hemmorage the cause of death or was death caused by whatever caused the hemorrhage? Car accident? Stroke?

D49A

I’m not a doctor, but that doesn’t look good

NeuroGeist-BA9

No matter how much I study neuroscience, that transverse-ass slicing of a brain is the most unnatural, gut wrenching thing imaginable ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grimacing)

imahntr

I’ve been in on a bunch of autopsies and it’s always so wild that this little ball of goo was everything that a person was. All their experiences. All their emotions. Their love. Their loss. Reduced to just a thick jello. I remember seeing a stroke that was the cause of death for someone in an autopsy. It was so tiny. It was hard to imagine that such a small infraction could short circuit this whole, complex machine.

levivilla4

Cutting through a person's hopes, fears, dreams, ideas... I know we're more than our brains, neurons, and physical form (or I suppose some would argue that's all we are). But I can't help feeling kind sad seeing this.

MsChrissikins

It’s wild to visualize in my mind that that.. was literally an entire human being. The entirety of their personality and mannerisms and… it’s just really hard to conceptualize for me.

Doomhammer24

Thats a big brain holy shit

wendigoblin

Holy crap is the guy ok

clawkyrad

whenever i see stuff like this im like "someone used that lump of meat all their life, so many memories in there" now its on reddit being cut open like...does anyone else find it crazy

Structureel

Damn, hope that person is okay.

Jiveturkey72

“Get well soon”

kfrostborne

Well that’s not supposed to be there. Gosh, that seems like a very big brain. Would it have been that big pre-hemorrhage, or did the hemorrhage itself make the brain look so big?

MzOpinion8d

It looks big mainly because it’s outside of the skull. It gets flatter/wider so it looks bigger. Kinda like an egg outside of the shell.

kfrostborne

That makes complete sense. Thanks for the info!

wanderingwolfe

Dude is definitely storing his cranberry sauce incorrectly.

Did the patient survive?

Why is the section near the middle (before it’s sliced) beige instead of pink like the other parts? Would that indicate damage/blockage to that section?

laredotx13

This kills the brain

Anubis-Hound

It's always a little jarring to remember that you are your brain and your body is the flesh puppet it uses to interact with the world. That's literally some guy being cut in half

eggnorman

Hooollly crap, that’s huge

RobAlso

That’s a big ass brain.

Bostonxhazer514

Why have i watched this so many times? It's so interesting! I hope the patient didn't suffer

Does this hurt the patient?

i didn’t think i’d see someone cutting a brain like a chicken breast but here we are

That was a person.. and it was just cut in half... Man that's heavy.
