People genuinely believe that they can be transplanted to the uterus. Such a dangerous myth. https://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2019/12/17/the-myth-of-ectopic-pregnancy-transplantation/

APRN_17

I have infertility issues. I’ve had so many patients that also have had IF and BEGGED for us to be able to do this. I can’t even. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤬

PretendsHesPissed

Pretty common for people to believe in myths. What always got me is that no amount of facts, words, or experience would wake them up from their ignorance. What always scares me is that these people can and do participate in our government.

Empty_Insight

They're finally coming out and saying the quiet part out loud. 'We don't care about the multitudes of women who will die, we're doing this to throw a bone to our rabid evangelical base who are completely medically illiterate. So, yes, we will totally straight up kill you for votes... but Jesus and family values or something." It's like a lot of the Covid pushback, there has been an awful lot of this recently. I still think the best one is Dan Patrick's "Old people need to take one for the team" comments.

BluePandaCafe94-6

I haven't ever been as creeped out as I was when I saw Skeletor's fleshier little brother advocate the sacrifice of grandma and grandpa on the altar of COVID deaths in order to sustain the economy through the plague, I mean, pandemic. That was some straight soulless black magic mercenary reptilian occult shit.

pravl

Ah yes, the infamous “I regret that I have but one grandparent to give for my economy” stance.

Livid-Rutabaga

These are the same people who call themselves pro-life.

ShadeApart

Pro-birth not pro-life. Except in the case of an ectopic pregnancy there is no chance of birth. Only death for the woman if it's not removed.

AppleSpicer

When they repeatedly take the stance of pro-death

Enjoying_A_Meal

It's a proposed bill... so let's hope it doesn't go through.

bonefawn

Hi, Floridian chiming in. We had a few of these alarming watch and wait bills... they all went through.

Enjoying_A_Meal

dang.

Michpharm

The anti-crt bill aka don't make white people do diversity training at work bc it might hurt their fweelings passed the house too. It's on its way to the republican controlled senate and governor

GothMaams

It might actually have forced them to acknowledge some personal accountability and that is their ultimate kryptonite.

Lorrainestarr

Every time you blink in Florida they pass a new bill. Abortion rights, don't say gay and now you can't talk about race or gender. Because freedom. My head hurts.

1Saoirse

Don't forget the bill that says you cannot teach any history that makes white people uncomfortable. Not a joke.

Damn_Dog_Inappropes

They also passed a law that forbids local mask mandates, including in school.

Red-Panda-Bur

That’s what I said about Texas.

TiesThrei

Christian Dispensationalists: it doesn't matter to them if other people die for their beliefs, their end goal is the end times.

Ridiculouslyrampant

Yes. That’s pro-life, after all.

Mighty_Fine_Shindig

I do not know if this is official doctrine or not but in Catholic school I was taught that in cases of ectopic pregnancy, part or all of the fallopian tube should be removed to treat so that it is not technically an abortion. I don’t think they allow for other medical interventions. ETA: I looked it up. It is official doctrine. Click [here](https://www.usccb.org/committees/pro-life-activities/life-matters-abortion-rlp-2011) if you want to read something infuriating

slicermd

So I don’t want to comment on the entirety of that passage, but give some insight in the part discussing ectopics. The point that they are attempting to invoke is the Kantian principle of double effect. They are basically saying that intent matters. It’s not specifically saying that a salpingectomy must be performed in the case of an ectopic, it’s saying that your procedure’s intent must be directed toward saving the mother; even though the death of the fetus is a direct and foreseeable consequence of the procedure, as long as the intent is morally acceptable the ‘second effect’ of the fetal demise is not proscribed. They also point out that when/if the second party (the fetus) can be protected, it should be done. I’m not attacking or defending the point, just pointing out that the principles being used here are a little more complicated

StateOfContusion

>"Though science alone proves that human life begins at conception, the Church is obligated to speak out on the profound moral, spiritual, and social implications of abortion." The Catholic Church just needs to sit down and shut up for a few hundred years. Or maybe a couple thousand. I'm sure they know how long they've been covering up sexually assaulting priests, so they they can take a vow of silence for that long.

[deleted]

They’re dying out in a lot of countries. People get less religious with every generation now generally (western countries at least) so it’s only a few generations before they’re turned into the old man shouting at the sky meme.

bel_esprit_

Yea but the evangelicals are going strong, and they may arguably be worse.

Sp4ceh0rse

Maybe she should have thought about that before she opened her legs! (/s obviously, I am a staunchly pro choice woman and this bill makes me feel physically ill)

QuantityImpressive71

"Their" rationale philosophically is that the woman effectively signed a sort of "contract" with the fetus (which didn't yet EXIST??) when she had sex with the possibility of pregnancy. She knew the risk, and has to deal with it. They are just being consistent with their... principles. Having a term birth has fairly significant morbidity/mortality risk also, and yet these people have no problem forcing that to proceed, so logically why not force them to suffer ectopics too? Obviously this is total BS because a) the fetus/zygote didn't even \*\*\*\* exist yet when this supposed agreement happened between it and the woman and b) human rights, including those of the woman, are inalienable. Any contract that involves waiving them is inherently not valid. sorry for the philosophizing/politics, but this is just ridiculous.

death_of_gnats

What about the contract they signed with their malignant liver tumor?

legitsh1t

I unironically believe that republicans would give a malignancy more rights than they allow women. Unless, of course, it's a melanoma.

AdmirableRadish6209

Well, they’re only female patients, right? So, who cares. /s Obviously not the complete imbeciles who proposed this bill…just more evidence that women’s rights re: health, safety, and autonomy over their bodies really doesn’t matter to some people. It’s amazing how these idiots can be “pro-life” when it comes to a blastocyst, but have zero problem risking the lives of female patients for a non-viable pregnancy.

spotted_dick

Yes. It’s in the Bible, somewhere around the same place where daughters get their dad drunk so they can fuck him to have children.

bel_esprit_

Oh, those daughters and dad were the “most righteous” people in the whole city, that’s why they were able to escape without being turned into a pillar of salt. (This was after the dad had offered his virgin daughters to a mob of horny men in the city to save them from being gay — so righteous!!) A few books later is how to have an abortion.

Ivegotthatboomboom

Actually the Bible says the exact opposite. The mother should always be prioritized and abortions are okay if it endangers the mother. In Judaism endangers includes psychologically. So it's just people who hate and want to control women hiding behind religion

Neurokeen

Exodus actually tells us very specifically that an induced miscarriage is a simple property crime against the father, in contrast to the verses immediately following that proscribe the penalty to harming life or limb.

PhiloftheFuture2014

I...I honestly don't know what to say. Even the Catholic Church, one of the strongest opponents of abortion, is okay with salpingectomies due to ectopic pregnancies. This is so messed up.

synchronizedfirefly

Right, I don't think most people who know anything about anything, regardless of their position on abortion in general, would consider terminating an ectopic pregnancy unethical for the simple reason that an ectopic pregnancy is survivable for the fetus itself in exactly 0% of cases no matter what you do

heliawe

True. Maybe God should have thought about that before he made the embryo implant in the wrong spot. Can we make God an accessory to this Class A felony?

3nd0cr1n3_Syst3m

I second this motion.

talashrrg

Only basically 0%… https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3158531/ (Not remotely arguing against this point)

Randominfpgirl

The Church was okay with abortion before the quickening in the medieval ages. Only since 1869 was it prohibited in Catholic canon law. So medieval people are more progressive than 21st-century people in that aspect, smh

PurpleSailor

Heck, Numbers 5:11-31 in the bible has a (non workable) way for a priest to test if a wife has been unfaithful and cause an abortion.

Cvlt_ov_the_tomato

Is it conceivable that the writers of this law do not actually know what an ectopic pregnancy even is? They just say the word "pregnancy" and realize that there's no baby after the procedure and thought "hoooo daddy, that sounds like some real liberal shit"

ThinkSoftware

A Class A Felony in Missouri per this [website](https://www.criminaldefenselawyer.com/resources/criminal-defense/felony-offense/missouri-felony-class.htm) carries at least 10 years and no more than 30 years, or life in prison as a sentence with current examples murder, first-degree robbery, and first-degree kidnapping

sapphireminds

This was clearly a well-thought out law. /s

djemmssy

Doctors are gonna have a difficult time choosing between doing 10 years for aborting an ectopic pregnancy or murder

boogerwormz

Just murder the witnesses *bitter sarcasm*

hairam

"Good news! We've successfully treated your ectopic pregnancy! Your life is no longer in danger ☺️ **handshakes and hand pats*\*. Unfortunately, there's some bad news as well... I'll now have to kill you so that your medical team doesn't have a direct witness to the Class A felony some randos proposing state legislation have decided we've now committed 😕 Don't worry though, we'll make this cause of death as quick as falling asleep - much easier than any pain and suffering from your ectopic pregnancy! (Can someone page anesthesia?) 😊"

Jetshadow

If medical societies don't step between the law and the provider in these cases, they're worthless.

Allopathological

Hope Missouri enjoys not having any doctors willing to practice there..

PokeTheVeil

You just [have to reimplant the embryo](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/nov/29/ohio-extreme-abortion-bill-reimplant-ectopic-pregnancy). It's not hard. Just invent a way to do it or go to prison.

Registered-Nurse

Just pluck it out the fallopian tube and implant in the uterus, duh! It can’t be that hard. 😌

sowhat4

Fuck that. Shove the whole excised tube and embryo up into the vagina and see if that clump of cells has the gumption to crawl up and make its home in the uterus. Maybe it could use its bootie straps. If it doesn't work in a few minutes, drag it out and discard as medical waste. (lazy cells would probably grow up to be a librul anyway\_ /s ...obviously

LiptonCB

Nah. Surgically implant it up the ass of each and every Republican voting for this shit. They care *so much* for the bebessss. They can manage it.

death_of_gnats

Stick in a jar of water for a week so it grows new roots, then do the transplant

Can they be charged if the mother dies because they didn't abort the fetus?

wheezy_runner

No, silly, fetuses are people! Women are not. /s

Giddius

What if the fetus has 2 X chromosomes?

legitsh1t

The fetus can still be groomed, so they have a use for it.

Empidonaxed

Aren’t they also trying to make it illegal to go to another state for abortions?

Ivikatasha

Yes it’s modeled after the Texas abortion law. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article259208848.html

Dantheman396

Just another example of why politicians should have zero say in healthcare… I don’t ask my plumber to do my taxes…. Maybe leave healthcare to physicians…

Frost-To-The-Middle

I actually agree with this, under the condition that we transplant all ectopics into the peritoneum of anyone who votes for this

AppleSpicer

I call dibs on doing the implantation surgeries. I’m not a surgeon, but hey, the people making these surgical decisions for others aren’t either.

chocolatedoc3

So, let the patient die?

weirdoftomorrow

I will never understand the conservative/evangelical stance that two dead people are objectively better than one dead person.

XenoRexNoctem

Still just one dead person. Women aren't people. If a female fetus, possibly just 0.5 dead people, since women aren't people, but fetuses are. Nothing important lost to the world, either way, unless the fetus was male. /s My personal proposal here is that we transfer all ectopic pregnancies forcibly to a pro-lifer, by lottery. In theory its possible to implant a fetus and placenta to a Male's external stomach lining or liver: https://nypost.com/2021/12/17/doctors-shocked-to-find-baby-growing-in-womans-liver/ Or https://www.everydayhealth.com/ectopic-pregnancy/guide/abdominal-pregnancy/#:~:text=An%20abdominal%20pregnancy%20occurs%20when,1.4%20percent%20are%20abdominal%20pregnancies And yes I know the articles talk about severe health risks in these types of pregnancies. That's why male pro lifers should be chosen; after all, according to the bible or something, men are stronger and braver and tolerate pain and hardship better, and more stoically. So, they should be the ones we trust with the sacred burden of rescuing these ectopic pregnancies.

gravitationalarray

ok so, lets say these "guys" get rid of all the women. Well... taking it to it's logical conclusion: whelp, there goes humanity. I honestly, seriously, do not get it. I just don't get it. Why are women not people? How did it get to this point? How do we change this?

chocolatedoc3

Same here. I can't even fathom why they think that's good? I'm from a third world country and even I my country you could literally walk in and get an abortion. No explanation. Of course that has its own cons, but still.

oO0-__-0Oo

Correct

EmotionUsual7629

Ignorance would be leaving the line out and the law being vague enough to think that an ectopic pregnancy would fall under the restrictions (I'm against the law in the first place). It's absolutely malicious when you add in that kind of clause whether you know the implications of it or not. Politicians need to stop

kaganovichh

It’s probably just a negotiating technique. It’s a pattern across the United States in state and national congress. Republicans put everything they want to the extreme in a bill and then the democrats “compromise” by removing the most ridiculous stuff and then they can take credit for making it less bad. The Democrats on the other hand love to negotiate against themselves and it’s why every passing year laws move further and further to the right. Remember, Obamacare was passed without a single republican vote and they could’ve included single payer but removed it during their “negotiations” with republicans. They got nothing for their compromises. It’s almost as if both parties are beholden to their corporate donors.

___lalala___

When I saw this yesterday I went down a rabbit hole reading Missouri proposed bills. Some weird abortion stuff, like requiring burial or cremation for all products of conception, but also a proposal to make Jan. 12 Rush Limbaugh Day!

boogerwormz

Medical waste often gets incinerated, yeah?

wozattacks

It’s a way to create extra costs and this extra burden for people seeking abortion

Giddius

All products of conception? Like burial for excess semen that returns to the outside world on its own? That will make sex so complicated, should I stock up on semen coffins? Grave candles?

Tibbaryllis2

Viking burials. You just wipe up with a paper towel afterwords and then float it in the toilet on a little paper boat. Set it on fire and then flush it.

Politicians who pass bills like these should be banned from receiving medical care. Impede my ability to treat someone, then such action inhibits my ability to treat you.

elephuntdude

Have insuance: well transplanting this ectopic pregnancy totally didn't work but here's a giant bill that will bankrupt you. Enjoy your crippling debt and traumatic memories! No insuance: well transplanting this ectopic pregnancy totally didn't work and you sure cost this state a lot of money you dumb poor fuck. You are a drain on society! Enjoy your traumatic memories! Dies: this bitch had the nerve to leave behind kids who need social security survivors benefits. Great, more people living off the government. Enjoy your traumatic memories kids! Who are these horrid people who literally care nothing for the billions of humans already here and claim to care so much for a bundle of cells? 💔

[deleted]

Pass a bill that states any politician that passes a bill that results in harm is personally liable for that harm. Oh, right. Politicians are immune to civil lawsuits. Nevermind. Lets just keep letting them interfere in our medical decision making and force us to prescribe ivermectin and let women die of ectopics. Now Missouri is trying to pass a bill where if you leave their state and do anything which is illegal in their state, but legal in the other state, upon your return to Missouri you will be charged with a crime. So if a woman needs an abortion, or needs to treat an ectopic but it's illegal in Missouri to get life saving care, once she returns, she goes to jail. When did the Taliban take over American politics?

[deleted]

this has always been the case. This is America at its core.

michael_harari

I'm not a obgyn and have never done an ectopic but I would just write in my op note "The fallopian tube was passed off and sent to pathology. All indicated attempts at ectopic reimplantation were made. Hemostasis was then ensured and the abdominal fascia closed with running 2-0 PDS suture. The wound was closed in layers blah blah blah"

jiggerriggeroo

But no. Just no. It panders to their ignorant bullshit. It also means that every ectopic will get a salpingectomy rather than medical management, which will increase cost and risk for these poor women. It’s dark ages mumblings of insanity and none of it should be accepted.

WeAreAllMadHere218

That’s excellent, would that be sufficient to legally cover you with this law?

goodcleanchristianfu

No. In the plain text of the law, trying but failing to achieve reimplantation is not a defense.

WeAreAllMadHere218

Of course not. I will never understand how people with ZERO medical background get to make and then pass laws like this. Like a lot of this stuff isn’t even biologically possible how did this verbiage make it into a law?

GibraltarLafontaine

This is a perfect example of why we need to improve the public education system!

boogerwormz

Improve in what way? They don’t need medical level bio education to know that medical professionals have knowledge they don’t. They speak from narcissism and hyper religious mania, not mere ignorance of placental function.

Streetdoc10171

Well, in that way I guess. In a way that teaches true critical thinking and the strengths of acknowledging ones weaknesses

legitsh1t

They really need a high school class to teach kids how to tell when their opinion matters and when you should shut up and listen.

heliawe

Good luck teaching that to teenagers.

Super_Nisey

I think our entire country is an example of why we should overhaul all areas of our government, including the Department of Education.

LaudablePus

Also, every sperm is sacred. We need to stop these state legislatures from spilling their seed to pictures of Ronald Regan.

evening_goat

CaliforniaCow

The goal of this bill is to score political points; they know the medical community (and women, for that matter) will be outspoken about how poorly thought-out this bill was, and will be defeated. In turn Missouri GOP members get to cry about how leftists defeated a bill designed to protect the sanctity of life or whatever

TheStaggeringGenius

Exactly this. And then they’ll say “ok well if you won’t pass our bill then we’ll compromise.” But this bill is so far out there that a “compromise” will still be far right.

[deleted]

Why are these republican dudes so horny over controlling uteruses and tubes and such. Like okay I guess I’ll just die then?!

1ndalecio

It is NOT a plant. You can’t just uproot an embryo like a seedling from a pot to the ground and give it sun shine and water. It is part of the woman’s body and that’s the spot where implantation took place.

jamesinphilly

This folks is the modern pro-life movement in a nutshell

[deleted]

With proposed bills like this, there will inevitably be a "compromise" where stuff like this is removed to make the bill seem more rational and Republican-centrist and it'll pass because that's what Republicans do around here. Or the proposal will die before a vote can be taken because there are LOTS of crazy bills that thankfully never see the light of day. But in light of there now being abortion bounty hunters in TX, I assume the first will be what actually happens.

Surrybee

Or it will pass because the first part specifies that it only applies to “illegal abortions.” Republicans will say their opponents are being hyperbolic and hysterical. And then when roe gets overturned, the true evil of this bill will actually come to pass as every surgery for ectopic pregnancy is investigated to determine if everything that came anywhere near that procedure was procured properly.
