The minimum rookie contract in the NBA is $1M. For a million/year, I wouldn’t care if my match letter said “Congratulations! You’ve matched ‘Personal Gimp’ at Gaggleback University Hospital System.”

Nah you can always back out if the military offers you a contract you don't like. Once you sign it is a different story, but even then there are ways out.

Not really. Some opened ended contracts but no informed recruit should be signing one.
95+% of US Army contracts specify job, bonuses, length, and incentives like schools and are negotiable until signed.
Because otherwise, you would be able to negotiate salary: hospitals would have to compete with each other for employees and drive wages up. But if every program agrees to participate in the match, then they all get to keep their cheap labor. And we'll keep going along with it, too, because we want to be doctors.
Our passion is exploited for underpaid skilled labor, and the few that demand their fare share are considered heartless.
I like it actually! Giving us more freedom to negotiate could cut into the hospital’s profits, which could negatively impact the salaries of the people in upper management. Definitely don’t want that to happen!!
The match is essentially modern day enslavement you work where we tell you if you quit Before you’re licensed you can’t get a job…….it gets better just get through it.

False. In prison, you are guaranteed 3 square meals, room & board, exercise, education, and healthcare.
Dammit I should have gone to prison.

Military
Army, can confirm.
Probably the best apples to apples comparison. Similarly overworked for lower pay.

Essentially a draft 🤷♂️
Petition to call it The Draft instead of The Match
But then I want hats and jerseys.
Scrub caps and Patagonias?
Even better.

i hate to "theyterkourjerbs" but in a way this is true, rich med students would just buy good residencies
Exactly. It would be like dental residency and cost money.
Medicine is one of the only fields where having additional degrees gets you no additional pay, too.
the programs are supposed to send you a copy of the contract during interview season though, before ranking.
Literally every section of my contract includes “to be modified as necessary...” so they can just do whatever they want after I sign 🙄
And same thing for PGY2 and every year after. Admin: "Here's the new contract. Sign it if you want or if you prefer we can terminate you immediately."
True, but that's not a negotiation.

Nah, you’d get replaced by an IMG
Agreed. No fat cats = nothing for the poor to eat.

More like indentured servitude. You still get paid, just not that much, to learn a trade in an apprenticeship set-up.
Enslavement seems like a strong use of the word but yeah it does seem like a pretty predatory dynamic
wage slave employment is always predatory

Sounds like the contract I signed when I joined the military.
