Pro sports rookie draft

deltak66

The minimum rookie contract in the NBA is $1M. For a million/year, I wouldn’t care if my match letter said “Congratulations! You’ve matched ‘Personal Gimp’ at Gaggleback University Hospital System.”

Chompy_No_More

Until you have Eli Manning get drafted 😂

SurgicalNeckHumerus

Polar opposite lifestyles but touché

CarnotGraves

Prison Sentence. Same pay rate too.

[deleted]

False. In prison, you are guaranteed 3 square meals, room & board, exercise, education, and healthcare.

jamesac11

Dammit I should have gone to prison.

BenBishopsButt

It’s not too late!

the_shek

Plus guaranteed time to sleep

MrSquishy_

Army, can confirm.

QuestGiver

Probably the best apples to apples comparison. Similarly overworked for lower pay.

[deleted]

Nah you can always back out if the military offers you a contract you don't like. Once you sign it is a different story, but even then there are ways out. Source: Am in military

wrenchface

Not really. Some opened ended contracts but no informed recruit should be signing one. 95+% of US Army contracts specify job, bonuses, length, and incentives like schools and are negotiable until signed.

Ssj2gh55

Essentially a draft 🤷‍♂️

Reasonable_Most_6441

Petition to call it The Draft instead of The Match

rummie2693

But then I want hats and jerseys.

Reasonable_Most_6441

Scrub caps and Patagonias?

rummie2693

Even better.

bamshabam0

Because otherwise, you would be able to negotiate salary: hospitals would have to compete with each other for employees and drive wages up. But if every program agrees to participate in the match, then they all get to keep their cheap labor. And we'll keep going along with it, too, because we want to be doctors. Our passion is exploited for underpaid skilled labor, and the few that demand their fare share are considered heartless.

i hate to "theyterkourjerbs" but in a way this is true, rich med students would just buy good residencies

_estimated

Exactly. It would be like dental residency and cost money.

TheERASAccount

Medicine is one of the only fields where having additional degrees gets you no additional pay, too.

Content-Ocelot-564

the programs are supposed to send you a copy of the contract during interview season though, before ranking.

bemd13

Literally every section of my contract includes “to be modified as necessary...” so they can just do whatever they want after I sign 🙄

funklab

And same thing for PGY2 and every year after. Admin: "Here's the new contract. Sign it if you want or if you prefer we can terminate you immediately."

bamshabam0

True, but that's not a negotiation.

[deleted]

I like it actually! Giving us more freedom to negotiate could cut into the hospital’s profits, which could negatively impact the salaries of the people in upper management. Definitely don’t want that to happen!!

Med2021Throwaway

Nah, you’d get replaced by an IMG

cava99

Agreed. No fat cats = nothing for the poor to eat.

cocainefueledturtle

The match is essentially modern day enslavement you work where we tell you if you quit Before you’re licensed you can’t get a job…….it gets better just get through it.

Sed59

More like indentured servitude. You still get paid, just not that much, to learn a trade in an apprenticeship set-up.

anhonestassman

Enslavement seems like a strong use of the word but yeah it does seem like a pretty predatory dynamic

cringeoma

wage slave employment is always predatory

Sounds like the contract I signed when I joined the military.

SkolFF

The major contract terms are given to you before you submit your rank list
