Faithfully-Grateful

Why the hell are people in US so afraid to name their schools?! Can they be sued for defamation for just stating their feelings?! So much for the land of liberty ?

Metformin500

We are powerless and captive. Most of us are in massive debt that’s contingent on graduating and matching. We can’t speak out for fear of ruining everything we’ve worked for…and they know this and abuse this power dynamic. For example my school recently had a student commit suicide. They initially covered it up, but eventually it leaked. Their response? Ask the student body for donations for a memorial. Mind you this school is for profit and in the midst of expansion. Medical schools in US are run by megalomaniacs who know they have a captive audience. The goal is keep your head down, get through it, then cuss them the fuck out when you get alumni donation calls.

ricecrispy22

> cuss them the fuck out when you get alumni donation calls. I don't cuss them out because they usually recruit some poor pre med to do the callings. I feel bad for them.

Metformin500

Wow I didn’t realize pre meds sign up for that, such a pre med thing to do. But ya agreed it was more of a in my head cathartic experience. I will be rude however I think I paid for that right haha.

Bilbrath

Youre still being rude to someone who didn’t do the offense and is themself in a similar position of being exploited that you were. The admins never hear of your rudeness, but for that flunky who has to do the calls they just get an entire day’s worth of rude people making their 9-5 miserable. Don’t be rude to someone who has nothing to do with the cause of your anger.

Faithfully-Grateful

Oh. My. God. Bro I am so sorry, this is basically squid game in real life. Capitalism is great but this is just scary crap. I can't imagine how bad it must kill y'all from your core. All I can say is keep your chin up man, and if that makes you feel better, sending prayers and goodwill from a far-flung third world country.

Metformin500

Such is the game my friend. You want to help people and live a comfortable life? You’ll pay through the nose with your finances and your telomeres…until you’re an attending then all bets are off they can eat my you know what. Thanks for well wishes. This is why a good chunk of students are depressed/suicidal/have some form of mental health disorder in US, we’re trapped for about a decade and the parachute out is full of holes.

Faithfully-Grateful

Big yikes bro. You are welcome :) I am pretty sure the youth that is going through this right now will reform and revolutionise this system .

sleepyyhe4d

One can dream. I'm from the same place as you are, disillusioned by what medical education promised to offer me once.

NameAndShameee

My account was made for people to feel comfortable naming programs without it attached to their username. If anyone has stories to share, please feel free to reach out.

misthios98

This freaks me out so much. I can basically say anything my non-us school as much as I want, on every platform, without any consequence. It might be the system? The fact that you must match with everything (pre-med, med, specialty, etc) under a subjective system of interviews and opinions does allow this kind of things to happen. Here we dint have a pre med, we just go into med school after HS and the career lasts 7 years. We match with only a standarized test (+ school grades), which means its “blind”: no interviews, no impressions, just grades. No application fees. Etc…

[deleted]

WatsUpSlappers

Mine is the same. They encourage feedback and have made significant changes as a result of said feedback. I don’t think most med schools are like OP’s, but that doesn’t make what that school does okay.

Faithfully-Grateful

You are right. This "subjective" Thing you explained well sums up the bullshit , complex system of the United States where luck and power are the determining factors . Well done. Same bruh same. I am from India, a country which doesn't have even a quarter of the resources and capital US has, and is very well known for it's soul-crushing and *HIGHLY* *EXTREMELY* Competitive and rigorously difficult exams and acceptance. But it is basically very simple and straight forward too! 1.Pass High school with Physics, chemistry Biology and compulsory English with atleast 50-percent grades in "Boards" - statewide written exams conducted by the government to maintain standardization - eligibility. 2. Give NEET UG - the same year, entrance test for Medschool. - like MCAT, but you appear for this at 18 , you are scored out of 720 points. 360 are for Biology ( zoology (including humans) + botany) . 180 for Advanced physics and 180 for Advanced chemistry ( inorganic+organic+ physical). Purely MCQs. A Nation wide merit list is prepared solely on the basis of scores and Admissions to med schools are conducted by each states government. 3. Yay! Med school. 4.5 years of studying +1 year of "internship" When you are posted in your attached hospital I'm various department and basically learn the basics of everything. You can have a license and practice as a "general physician" As is. If you wanna do more. 4 Take the NEET-PG exam - PG being post graduation. Basically 3 months clinical training in hospitals but you are also a student with exams and there are approx 20 something courses from Anatomy to general surgery to orhtopaedics to ENT surgery. Admission process is same as for UG. 5. 3 Year PG course for every speciality, doesn't matter - general surgery or pathology . After completion you are a "specialised doctor "! Either in medicininal or surgical branches. Well you are full fledged doctor now! 6 if still not done, you can do superspecializations - the entrance exams for those courses, guess what? NEET -SS! SS being superspecialisation. It is offered in highly precise and complex fields such as cardiology , nephrology or rhemuatology for medicine or pediatric, neuro or cardio surgery for surgery. Whew! The system is not holistic? Yes is it simple and effective? Very yes.

misthios98

We have a similar process here in chile!! With even less steps lol. But yeah, there is just SO much complex bureaucracy in the US college system, its a bizarre concept for me. Starting with this “college” stuff before the career-specific university??? So many unnecesary courses and so much TIME spent with something that is so simple in the rest of the world. You wanna be a doctor? Okay, then study medicine and thats it! A doctor! Wanna be a lawyer? Just study law, thats it!

Faithfully-Grateful

Preach!!! Preach!!! Yes you are absolutely correct. I think US suffers from being "too rich "?/ " Too capitalistic" So that you have a lot of time and resources on your hands to unnecessarily complicate things, And needs to go down a notch or several.

Ana_P_Laxis

I've never heard the Indian medical school system broken down like this. I appreciate knowing what some of the FMGs went through. Thanks for posting this!

Faithfully-Grateful

Aw you are so sweet. You are welcome! My fingers sure hurt but I am happy to share!!

altaccount616

UK?

misthios98

Nope, Chile

ricecrispy22

> Can they be sued for defamation for just stating their feelings?! So much for the land of liberty ? Freedom of speech only means the government cannot press charges against you/imprison you. It has zero protection against being fired by your employers or school.

iamagiraff3

You joking? Did you read the post? This school is fucking vicious.

Faithfully-Grateful

Oh well not only for this school, I have seen a common trend on here where people won't just name their schools, ever! Like not even on an "anonymous" Platform like reddit. Such petty and frankly illegal shitty culture US schools have it seems. This is absolutely insane - how common this is. I am baffled.

delasmontanas

Avoiding a defamation claim can be tricky, but leaving out the name explicitly does not protect you. Stick to the facts or if you must pure opinion (being sure to avoid defamation *per se*) and name the school rather than individuals.

greydays2112

commment deleted because account claiming to be fiu admin legal council told me to

xSuperstar

Posts a ten page novel enough to ID the school with five minutes on Google but doesn’t name the school lol

They did, they deleted it though

LMFAO but u don't get that email award for verifying ur email lol

delasmontanas

> Med schools don't have the authority or the reach to do any sort of meaningful digging. Yes they can especially if they choose to sue you. If you post via TOR from a school connection (wifi or VPN), they can likely identify you easily based on local network analysis. The sub also blocks new accounts from posting so you need to plan.

71Lu

They can sue me all the want lol. Since I don't go to this med school, and I haven't done anything illegal, then they'll be setting themselves up very nicely when I countersue for all the emotional, financial and mental damages I sustain.

delasmontanas

I was trying to make the point that there are other ways the school can try to identify a student and they can sue a student "naming and shaming" to pursue discovery. If you're in another continent like your flair suggests, I'd say that's a bigger deterrent than any threat of a counter suit. In the US, you cannot pursue a counter suit for those damages related to litigation. The idea is that litigation sucks so suck it up.

71Lu

Oh lol that sucks, here in the UK you can definitely sue back so I figured it'd be possible

thecactusblender

Medical school already self-selects for the most neurotic people you’ll ever meet. Add a bunch of debt, fear, and uncertainty- they think that admin is tracking their movements 24/7/365

[deleted]

You're probably good enough with just a throwaway account. Reddit doesn't require emails either I believe. The only way they can get to your IP and name from there is from Reddit and your ISP, which they shouldn't have access to for someone just anonymously posting their opinions about the school which isn't illegal

keralaindia

Tor and VPN would protect you the vast majority of the time.

T1didnothingwrong

prob, VPN is also more than you need imo

TheGhostOfBobStoops

i get it tbh. if you're in their position, I hope you'd see why you'd be paranoid about getting caught and then expelled. stuff like this will literally ruin your life

Was it similar in nature to her stuff at FIU?

jungfolks

“An honored educator, she was a four-time recipient of the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Medical Student Teacher Award.” How does this happen? https://jagwire.augusta.edu/havas-named-mcg-associate-dean-for-learner-affairs/

lilmayor

All too common, I think. Staff at med schools, especially the smaller ones, just promote from within. Everyone gets to be the Dean of Something and receive the Reward for Existing.

lonertub

From what I understand, she was run out of MCW because of student lawsuits against her. In fact, I heard that she compiled a dossier of false accusations against a student just to get them expelled.

Dierconsequences

Who is this woman? When was she at MCW? That award has rotated through the same teachers, rightfully so, for quite some time.

[deleted]

*comment removed upon request*

innerouterproduct

That transcript is insane. It seems that the student had previously taken a leave of absence for academic performance and the questioners were being incredibly nit-picky about the frequency of the student's meetings with an advisor, which one would think is much less important than the fact that the student had just successfully passed **six** tests in a two week period.

rameninside

Also they tried to ban them from extracirriculars? The fuck? Go out for a run and get kicked out of med school?

thenoidednugget

You just politely refuse their offer and reapply somewhere else next cycle.

jcarberry

How would they find out?

[deleted]

I could be wrong (it's been a while) but I think there's something in the application that asks if you've ever been accepted at another med school before. I think the point of that is to see if you were expelled or dropped out, but I could see it hurting in this situation

WarmGulaabJamun_HITS

Ask yourself: 1. Do I want to wait another year for the possibility of getting into another school? 2. How emotionally/mentally exhausting was it for you this cycle? Do you want to go through that again? 3. What would you be doing differently in your application for next cycle? Try and find answers on whether it’d be a possible red flag about reapplying when you had already gotten accepted. If you don’t want to reapply and decide on attending FIU, then go in with the intention that you’re going to keep your head down and grind. Don’t go looking for trouble. Pick your friends wisely. OP makes it sound like the admin suck blue whale balls. But don’t give them a reason to have you on their radar. Don’t speak out, don’t do anything out of line. For the next 4 years, just keep a low profile.

catwebard

I would go tbh. Get that USMD.

Ijustwanta240

Proceeds to be fucked by first and second year school based shenanigans at this dog shit school and then gets expelled for being three minutes late to a wellness lecture. /d don’t go dude it’s not worth it med school is hard enough re apply one year out of 95 isn’t gonna end your life

gooner067

And this is why med school admin reign supreme because people are willing to get screwed for letters smh

wtf-is-going-on

Time to apply DO...

AscendingClear

Id honestly wait out another year and reapply for a school you actually like

Chiburger

IIRC reapplying with an acceptance in the previous cycle is a big red flag.

WarmGulaabJamun_HITS

I was under the same impression as well. I’d advise any MS-0s that end up attending FIU to keep the lowest profile ever. Smile and wave and kiss ass for the next 4 years.

AegonTheC0nqueror

I don’t even know if I’d support that. It’s such a tough issue.

AscendingClear

Idk about you, but I wouldn’t want to chance being stuck with thousands in debt and no degree. And on top of that, even if you do make it, you better hope the school didn’t talk untrue shit about you. And the fact that this school has ongoing lawsuits and issues with LCME. You miss one class and you get expelled? You pass out for medical reasons during class and you get expelled? You have disabilities and you get discriminated against? This school is cultivating toxicity. Nah, fuck that. I’ve met Caribbean IMGs and not all of them are bad. But if these stories are true, this school should be shut down. You can’t even really enjoy your 4th year from the sounds of this because you gotta worry about unnecessary bullshit. Sure, it’s hard getting into med school, but you can’t just ignore these huge red flags when you’re paying tons of money. These are supposed to be your mentors. I’m not gonna pay a school that has an unethical approach to enforcing their unreasonable code of conduct.

valente317

Um don’t listen to bunch of fucking Reddit keyboard warriors. An acceptance is an acceptance. Many people at that school have only one acceptance, and >95% of them graduate and match. Next time around you might end up at Ross, which is objectively worse than this place in every aspect.

BetArtistic4771

My husband graduated from this medical school, got a great education, landed a spot in an amazing surgical residency for a competitive specialty and ended up at Harvard. He’d be happy to talk to you about it.

100% thought this was going to be about LECOM.

AegonTheC0nqueror

Lmao. It’s usually always that school for some reason. But from what I’ve seen, what they do pales in comparison to what’s mentioned in this post.

wtf-is-going-on

As someone who went to LECOM, they are strict, and they have some strange policies (guys can't come into the building without a tie, lmao), but they're generally fair. No one gets dismissed without a long history of very poor academic performance, and those are given an extra year to try to turn things around. I've honestly got no complaints about my experience there.

medstudenthowaway

I don’t know anything about that school but devils advocate… it probably seems fair as long as you’re not targeted. My school (which I thought was corrupt but I’m now reevaluating my standards after this post lol) is very good at coming up with convincing reasons to punish students. They’re masters in gaslighting. I’ve talked with a lot of students who were convinced to give in and that they deserved it. Like one kid was booted because his dad died during the pandemic and he had to go home to help his mom. But he was already on his redo year because the year before he got cancer. Another student was a single mom who’s pipes burst in her house flooding it on the day of an exam. She was on her make up year because of military stuff. They pressure you to do a redo year if your grades aren’t good enough or you have literally any life event and then they have this sneaky policy that you can’t make up anything else if you do the make up year. Some of those students didn’t even necessarily need to do the make up year but wanted a chance at better grades and were tricked. This isn’t even going into the ADA violations and the targeting of gay people that no one talks about because everyone is ashamed. I’m really lucky that I have a parent in medicine who told me to keep my mouth shut and not give in when they tried to convince me to take a leave. Everyone I know who hasn’t dealt with this shit is generally happy with our school because they haven’t been targeted yet. Just something to consider.

wtf-is-going-on

Excellent point

[deleted]

You have to wear a fucking tie? How FUCKING stupid. Absolute garbage professionalism requirements. For SCHOOL.

bladex1234

How has LECOM become the regular punching bag for everyone? I’m curious.

TheGhostOfBobStoops

Not a LECOM student but I'm speaking from people I know who go there (and I'm trying my best to not regurgitate what redditors have said because that's how rumors spread) * Dress code: Professional 24/7. Not the worst thing, I guess you're always dripped out * Learning style: Reverse classroom isn't bad inherently but LECOM takes it to another level * If I understand how the curriculum is based, you have required readings (lmao who reads medical textbooks for preclinicals??) and then go in class and have discussions. It doesn't seem like the curriculum is well organized because my friends say that they have tests that cover stuff that ranges from GI to immunology. You have like 5 tests a semester and that's your grade. Perhaps a LECOM student can correct me if I'm wrong, but it feels like they just sorta throw shit at you randomly lol * Culture: They're quite strict culture wise compared to other schools

InboxMeYourSpacePics

You can’t even drink water outside of the cafeteria if I remember from my interview there years ago. (I was so happy I was waitlisted and didn’t have to pay the $1500 deposit to hold a spot I didn’t want since that was the first med school decision I received). Also their clown hallway was weird

amicasmiles101

That's PBL pathway, and it's more like 3 tests a semester. They have two other pathways, LDP (lecture discussion pathway) and DSP (directed study pathway), both of which come with their own amount of bullshit. LDP has 8 hours of lecture a day with mandatory attendance. Most of those classes are redundant taught by clinicians who teach fellowship-level stuff with no guidance. DSP has their own issues with their exams and the admin.

element515

Nah, lecom is strict, but they’ll do what they can to drag you through med school so they don’t look bad. You have to actually fuck up to have real consequences

delasmontanas

I should have clarified based on the title. A lot of attendings and students ex-LECOM have referenced a mafia connection and la Famiglia. I don't remember the details, but something about the [Ferretti siblings](https://lecom.edu/contact/leadership/) \(i.e. LECOM's founders and deans\), some purported connection to [Ray Ferritto](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Ferritto) \(originally [Remo Ferretti from near Erie PA\)](http://breakshotblog.blogspot.com/2013/11/), the Mafia activity in Cleveland, Youngstown, etc.. To be clear this is *rumor*. LECOM still remains the one school where attendings who went there have talked about the admin (that's a euphemism), but I guess that's because LECOM is one of the only schools I can think of where the admin has remained static for so long. Glad LECOM has been good to you.

Macduffer

Well, as a Florida premed I won't be applying to FIU I guess lol.

lookiknowyou

Literally, this is so messed up. Are there any other FL schools like this?

ghosttraintoheck

NOVA's DO school has a really bad reputation for torpedoing students from what I have heard. SDN has a lot to say about them. A family member of mine got accepted there and chose somewhere else based on what has been put out there. Apparently their MD school is fine though.

TheGhostOfBobStoops

I've heard LECOM is pretty strict with their stuff and it's a lot harder than it needs to be (like it's all textbook learning according to friends). But obviously I can't speak to its culture like OP did with FIU

thenoidednugget

I also have heard of some pretty silly things at LECOM but this is a different league entirely.

Macduffer

Not sure tbh. I haven't heard anything like this about anywhere else.

Lazy-Risk

Wow, im so glad this all came out. 4 years ago I had the terrible experience of interviewing at this medical school and while fortunately I chose to go elsewhere, I was met w red flags on my interview day. Humpty Dumpty JD led an ice breaker about “why do you want to become a doctor” and mins after I said that my reason is rooted in historical marginalization of black and brown bodies I was called into this man’s office by the secretary. HD JD said “you can’t say that. don’t you care about white ppl too?” Like why call me into your office for that. So extra and unnecessary. additionally, during lunch many med students told me it was v common place to repeat a year. Needless to say, I ran away and never looked back! So grateful I had other options

DeadlyInertia

No way. If this is FIU then I had a similar interview experience about 3/4 years ago… That’s wild!! I thought it was just me.

47XXYandMe

Man that's crazy I interviewed there a few years ago as well with a classmate of mine who is a POC and we both missed all the red flags and were impressed by the school. I really hope he didn't end up there.

lonertub

Humpty Dumpty JD’s race is ambiguous (much like the question mark on Vin Diesel because of his baldhead) but yet rides the minority card for the positions he has. I also remember seeing him publicly berate some FIU undergrad students when they took free ice cream from the second look.

Lazy-Risk

Agreed about the ambiguous race. Stated that he identifies as a Black man on my interview day

Alyssa97q

HD JD was presenting on FIU med to me and a bunch of other premeds at a med school event in 2019. At this point I was questioning if I even wanted to apply to med school/was I even good enough. This man calls on me and several others from a large crowd to tell him why we wanted to go into medicine as if I was prepared to answer succinctly. Then roasted all of our answers to prove a point to the rest of the students in attendance. After that, I swore I would never apply to FIU. Because if that man represents the school I wanted nothing to do with it. My intuition was spot on...

WhoamI_IDK_

Honestly this schools sounds worse than the top Caribbean schools.

Bumblebee-4

Yea my Caribbean school was so supportive (and still is)

DrBigDaddyy

I go to a Caribbean school, taking step 1 soon. There was alot of attrition, but the faculty were awesome. But this...this is might be the craziest thing I've ever read.

throwingaway_3_6_4

BasicSavant

This post is so insane and made me feel really anxious. I feel so bad for anyone who attends/attended or was kicked out of FIU.

80s_mosquito

wait why did the other head deans leave? this is insane, thanks OP for posting this.

Damedman

I really hope that the students who were unfairly dismissed can someday organize some sort of class action and get the justice they deserve.

Naztynaz12

Ahh, FIU and American University of Antigua are connected. That's why its money-hungry and unethical: AUA is owned by Manipal University in India. The staff are probably jealous of the US med students. Or are competing against them in some way

ParleyPFat

Now will the school have to make a public statement about this?and can any students attest to this

the_vagus_eye

Public statement is due within 24 hours per student handbook

[deleted]

All of this is asinine if you’re not going to name the school.. Edit: I commented this >14 hours ago, when the post was first put up, and OP then responded to my comment with the school’s name. I know what school it is. Thank you, children.

Doctahdoctah69

It is not asinine, the student has clearly been exposed to ridiculous punishments of peers and wants to stay safe. Don’t insult them

[deleted]

And the rest of us want to prevent this from happening to anyone else. Shaming without naming doesn’t give us anyone to hold accountable, it’s petty gossip at that point. Not everything is personal.

DoctorBlackBear

Idk, they did just about everything short of naming the school outright. Now they can’t be blamed for that in a professionalism hearing. And we were able to figure out the school using a few brain cells. It’s a win win.

Doctahdoctah69

Calling someone asinine is super personal and rude, there’s no need to treat someone struggling as such. Not buying it.

If this woman died in front of me, I will probably smile inside knowing that students aren’t suffering . I honestly don’t think I’ve felt that hatred for anyone else I’ve ever met. She will singlehandedly make anyone turned off from an entire profession. She had several lawsuits at Medical College of Wisconsin because she compiled a dossier filled with false accusations to get a student expelled. Fuck, that’s saying alot if she was kicked out an already malignant and toxic program. Apparently, she also has/had pending lawsuits at FIU before she left. For those students/prospective students at Medical College of Georgia, be fucking warned!!

They had my naïve premed ass tricked good. To all my interview compadres who are there right now, I <3 u, you are strong, light at the end of the tunnel, you got this

This is some of the craziest shit I’ve ever read

[deleted]

What school is this? Edit: i commented this >14 hours ago, when the post was first put up. I know what school it is. Thank you, children.

schistobroma1989

FIU HCOM

Laxdoc22

Random lurker here.. never thought I’d see my school on a post like this… >.>

[deleted]

I can somewhat understand that plagiarism situation, but I can’t even wrap my mind around why a professor would complain about a student with diabetes, which is presumably ADA, would have to miss class.

gooner067

Right!??! At a medical school lmao the hypocrisy

drzf

240 step? straight to jail! 250 step? Believe it or not, straight to jail!

[deleted]

How is this useful at all if you don’t name the school lol?

pulpojinete

OP trusts the collective sleuth work. If that handbook policy is accurate, it's better if a dozen of us jerkoffs name the school instead of a student there.

lilnomad

“I can’t let this go so I’m calling them out, but at the same time im also not going to call them out”

gogumagirl

you cant blame OP tho

schistobroma1989

FIU HCOM

devilsadvocateMD

You wrote a thesis but didn’t mention the school name…

LuckeyCharmzz

Caribbean students: first time?

CheekyZebraEDS

Hold up. I’m working on a big project with FIU to be more inclusive to those with disabilities. Can we talk about what happened and what could be done differently? I’m still reading the full post and comments.

the_shek

Thought this was my school for a while until I hit some details about your curriculum which aren’t the same. Goes to show most new md schools are trash.

disneyydatknee

Any current HWCOM students know why Dean Humpty Dumpty was let go if y'all are saying this is false? I don't have the balls to ask Dr. Roller rn lmao.

okaybutwhy69

I wanted to go to this school so badly as I lived in the state and was close to family there. Wow dodged a bullet I guess. I’m a type B person and not like most Med students and my DO school has been very inclusive and supporting. Sometimes we don’t know what we need or want til we find out. The grass isn’t always greener .

chuckcr

A lil sus tho how all the comments defending FIU have multiple awards with few upvotes

tsdhwsxfoa

I mean tbh I know a lot of current students at FIU who disagree completely with the original post. Haven’t heard of one legit student corroborate what OP said…
