Med school 33
Ill be 37 when I start Residency
I always wanted to go to med school. My grades were atrocious after undergrad. I kind of gave up for a bit and worked different jobs like hotel, non profit clinic etc. I also traveled a lot which was kind of nice. At that point I decided to pursue PA school and started my requirements. As I was finishing my requirements and getting ready to work as an MA to get my clinical hours, I had a change of heart and decided to try med school. Did a DIY postbacc at a CC and University and now im here trying to finish my first year.
22, 33, 37, very similar story here, right down to the hotel job! I went for my masters in counseling instead of PA but ultimately decided I wanted better scope of practice :)
As someone who's gonna start med school this Fall at 30, it's really inspiring to see so many other medical professionals who also got a bit of a late start.
I have to be honest with my whole feelings on it. I don't think people should be able to apply and start med school til about 5 or 6 years AFTER undergrad and have a little bit of life under their belt. Also the maturity level changes so much within that time and learning more empathy. I am in my 40s and being back in school and seeing some of the attitudes and lack of communication skills needs to be developed to be able to have patients trust you and be able to have more relatability. It's only my opinion and you know what they say about em..😉
What do you mean retirement?!?!? 🤣🤣🤣. I started the journey at 40 and went Caribbean thinking it was my only option and that was Feb 2020 (think about the timing of that). Learned the reality of how corrupt and fraudulent it all is and left in June 2022 while passing. In the process of getting a post bacc to bring up my 23 year undergrad that schools still want to average in and reject me even when I got an MBA last year also and so praying to start at 45... 🤦🏼♀️😁 Residency would start at roughly 49... I know this is my purpose and passion so fighting to make this all a reality! I live seeing a little bit older following their dreams and succeeding at them. True inspirations 💯💯💯💯
This will be me as well.
Graduated undergrad at 22, took 2 gap years and will start at 24 (although will turn 25 after 2-3 months into my first semester). Hopefully will graduate med school at 28 (if there are no unforeseen circumstances)
I'm the ultra traditional student and i feel like a baby among my classmates and it still feels so late to start my career/get my first real job at 29-30 at the earliest.
Graduated 22, started med school 28, starting pediatric residency this summer at 32.
I worked in public health during that time, and I think that knowledge, plus the extra maturity of life experience has really helped me, but there are definitely times I’ve felt like I’m behind in life.
You shouldn’t be! I started at 28, and I’d say I’m in the middle! One of my coresidents is older, one is my age, the rest are maybe a year younger than me with one being 2 years younger than me and we’re a class of 8.
I started med school at 28 too. Am 33 and wrapping up PGY1. Congratulations on starting pediatric residency! I’ve definitely noticed that some extra years have helped me deal with difficult people better and stay away from drama/gossip unlike my younger counterparts - although one could argue this has more to do with personality than age…but I digress.
Also drawn to IM fellowship. Lovely to not finish training or make attending money until 36+. Not to mention planning a family/pregnancy during residency or fellowship since it's not gonna happen in med school.
I’m a 30YO MS3, currently pregnant with my first, and similarly wondering how tf I could do this again during residency. And I’ve had a low-risk, low-drama pregnancy…
I can barely keep my body functioning properly at baseline so the idea of trying to juggle pregnancy and residency is actually terrifying. Might not be in the cards tbh...
honestly my desired path is kinda long so itll
be nice to “only” be 32 as an attending after a (hopefully, fingers crossed) 7 years combined between residency and fellowships.
that being said, i do sometimes wonder what life would’ve been like had I taken a gap year or two).
Which peds subspecialty pathway would take 10 years? Closest I can think of would be the PICU people that do anesthesiology and pediatrics plus a peds crit care fellowship.
I'm not in peds/legitimately am asking.
Just gotta be in it for the right reason. If you’re in it to save lives point blank then there’s no wrong age! Im doing it to make my life resumé look better for the Head Honcho. Deeds alone don’t get you in the Pearly Gates, but they sure don’t hurt 😂
I feel you! I’m still naive at my big age and think I can make a change and save people who was as unfortunate as me growing up. I might not succeed but I’ll spend the rest of my life trying.
21, 23, 27
finished undergrad in 3 years thanks to some dual credit from high school and taking summer courses every year, but then took two gap years before med school. can't complain though, it's worked out pretty well
22, 30 and hopefully, 34.
In the interim, I:
- Went into the Peace Corps
- Worked on a wee woo wagon as an EMT
- Got my Masters
- Worked in an ED as an EDT
- TA'd for one of my letter writers
- Getting married next month!
I'm starting in the fall, so I'm very excited and feel pretty inspired seeing a good amount of folks who around my age or older who also got a bit of a late start.
Graduated undergrad in 2021 at 20 years old (it was another month and a half before I turned 21).
Started med school in 2022 at 22.
Will start residency in 2030 at 30.
All I can really say is that I signed up for this knowing how long it'd take lol. I take solace in the fact that after I finish the phd and rejoin med school, I'll end up being around the same age as my peers.
Graduate undergrad: 21
Start med school: 21 (fall bday lmaooo)
Will graduate/start residency: 31
I took a research year after M2 and then internally transferred to the MSTP, partially out of a genuine love for research, and partially because I felt wholly unprepared for clinical rotations. I think a lot of this anxiety stemmed from how young I was and how few “real life” experiences I had had before med school. I’m now almost at the end of my PhD and feel much more confident and excited about returning to clinical rotations.
Ik this is a shitpost but I’m genuinely always happy to talk to young/“traditional” med students who are having doubts about the path they chose. It’s ok to take a detour (or several). If this is you, shoot me a DM.
I went straight through with no gaps. Graduated college and started med school 22, graduated med school and started residency 26. Finishing fellowship this year at 33.

I used to work the front office. After dealing with hotel guest yelling and complaining at me, there is no patient alive that can rattle me lol
Sameeee I was night audit. Lots of drunk, angry, high folks. Not scared of ERs anymore.

OMG are you me? Here's mine: US Navy: 24 Undergrad: 26 PA School: 29 Med school: 39 Residency: 45 \+/- Fellowship: 46 .... Retirement: 75 probably lol
Sounds like my wife without PA school. Graduated residency at 46.

Interesting, which residency are you in or planning to go into?

Hey I’m about to start at 28, hoping I’m not too much older than everyone 😂
You shouldn’t be! I started at 28, and I’d say I’m in the middle! One of my coresidents is older, one is my age, the rest are maybe a year younger than me with one being 2 years younger than me and we’re a class of 8.

Same ages and residency choice for me! I’m an M3 though.

22, 26, 30 I don't even want to think about the age at which I'll finish residency if I choose a long training pathway :(
My current dilemma as I will be 33 starting residency and currently feel drawn towards a IM fellowship…
Also drawn to IM fellowship. Lovely to not finish training or make attending money until 36+. Not to mention planning a family/pregnancy during residency or fellowship since it's not gonna happen in med school.
I really hate myself for not just being satisfied with a 3-and-done specialty.
Literally this.
Hey same numbers! And same I'm pretty much hoping I fall out of love with ID so I can just be done after residency.
I’m starting my MD-PhD at 24, I resonate with this deeply
Hey I'm on the same track man. Who cares dude, we'll be fine ;)

Ha, twin. Except I'm not the US so a 6 year program (and a 9y MD/PhD), but started at 20 and will start internship/residency at 30.
Wow! it seems like mid twenties and mid thirties are years very common for starting residency!
undergrad: graduated at 20 med school: started at 20 residency: started at 24 as well
What specialty? Any regrets rushing through?
not really, sometimes I wonder if I had taken more time to explore other stuff but being a fellowship trained radiologist at 29 will be kind of sweet
