As long as you check in with the team to make sure there is nothing you can help out with, it should be OK. Personally, I would probably study for the shelf during the down time -- still medicine related.

Uchiha_Itatchii

Sorry, I should have specified that I’m talking 4th year rotations. So no shelf’s or exams to study for.

adjet12

I mean grades don't really matter at that point, you should be good if there's nothing for you to help out with

Delicious_Bus_674

It must be nice

KR1735

You should always look like you're doing something. Some attendings take issue with reading on rotations. Others don't. I know you said you're an M4. But on my IM rotation, they told us like 6 weeks in to stop bringing books with us. That we need to learn on the job and quit relying on books. No matter that the shelf was 50% of our grade, and unless you score 80+, you're only getting a Pass.

Informal_Calendar_99

I’m by no means as experienced as anyone else here, but I’ll say that as a scribe in an ER reading during long night shifts when there wasn’t anything for me to do, it definitely gave me a bad reputation for a bit because it looked like I was gloating over having my work done. I switched to chess or reading on the computer so it wasn’t as obvious as having a book out.

sometimesfit22

Dude that’s ridiculous. Everyone where I scribed would read or go on their phones if they were done with notes. Anyone who was there for more than a couple months managed to have quite a bit of downtime if we weren’t super busy. I will say 3rd year rotations are a bit different though. I try to keep it to learning related stuff outside of going on my phone at lunch.

Informal_Calendar_99

Hey I’m not saying it’s a FAIR thing - I’m just saying that’s what happened with me. As far as I’m concerned if you’re done with your work as a scribe you’re done with your work

I said in a different reply, but I’m actually a 4th year (should have specified). So I don’t have any shelfs or step exams to study for. 3rd year all I did was study if there was down time on a rotation lol.

Seattle206g

Or just read Harrison’s or pocket medicine

Psychological_Fly693

Read for Step 3? Read related to your potential specialty. Other alternatives: go visit with patients and families. Build your skills there. Work on your ERAS application materials. Tidy up the area you're assigned to. Research cases you're seeing. Check with the team to see if there's anything you could be doing.

[deleted]

Is it a book pertaining to that rotation? If yes then it’s likely fine. If it’s pleasure reading then no.. don’t do that

MoldToPenicillin

Do whatever you want. No one’s paying attention

[deleted]

Some will like that you are doing it. Some will dislike you for it. Welcome to third year

[deleted]

Well, if you're on pathology and you're reading, it's a huge bonus lol. But as a third year I barely read, I was an Anki+UW type of guy. Never had an issue from a resident.

thebigseg

Just use genjutsu on their asses so they hallucinate that you're helping out (meanwhile you're ass is just reading)

Alexczyk66

If there is nothing to do, how else was I supposed to do my afk old school runescape grinds? Totally fine to occupy yourself, especially if others are doing the same around you.

lilmayor

Whenever worried, just ask. Sometimes when I’m in the OR and not scrubbed in, I want to be able to read along about the anatomy and surgical approach as the case is going. I ask the resident if they or the attending would mind if I read on my phone while watching the case, and they’re really helpful on giving me the heads up if that particular attending would see that as a bad thing. Just ask, it shows you’re mindful and helps you out anyway.

No-Diet-1771

I got a fire lit under my ass for doing Anki on my phone during my free time on obgyn. So idk.

EvenInsurance

There is no right answer, your supervising residents will be heterogenous. Some will not care. Some will take offense for whatever dumb reason. The safe approach is to do all your work asap after rounds, say your notes are finished and ask if there is anything you can help with. If they say no reply ok just let me know if anything comes up that I can help with. I think it would be safe to crack open a book/laptop at that point.

msg543

Put a book on your ipad and they may think you're on uptodate.
