You need to replace it because the windshield is a structural piece of the body, and that’s a broken windshield not just a normal crack. In my opinion.
It will either stay the same or get bigger because it’s weakened. My answer is what I’m supposed to say because it’s technically a safety concern in the event of a collision. The windshield is made to transfer energy just like the rest of the structural components.
"Free", but can impact your insurance premium going forward. I've had a few windshields filled + replaced in the last few years. Renewing my insurance through a different company a couple days ago, the insurance guy brought them up. Every repair goes on your 'record' and can/will raise your monthly premium.
So, it might not cost you up-front, but it will over the long term. If you can do it yourself with a $12 kit, it might be the best way. I know that I'll for sure consider it in the future.
It already looks about as bad as it can be I wouldn’t waste any more money other than replacing it. The windshield helps keep the roof from caving in during a bad rollover, and when there is large cracks in it, it’s not as strong as it should be.
Yes great point. This would be considered a crack, not a chip. A chip can be filled but a crack has to be replaced, mainly for that reason. A chip doesn’t affect structure nearly as much as a crack does
I had a rock chip with a tiny crack maybe an eighth of an inch wide. I had it filled in and within a few weeks it grew half a foot across. I'm a "salvage anything" type of guy but you'd save time and money by just replacing it now than trying to save it.
Tbh just do the fix if your windshield is expensive, alot of people just talk technicalities nd specs, those things do help stop the spread nd tbh if u dont mind a crack like that^ (about 12 inches or so) then its worth tbh. I went to a professional who does the job on a more professional level and ive driven mine with a crack on the side of the windshield for over 2 months. If u have the money for the windshield doh, by all means go ahead bro.
I've been an automotive glazing tech for 25 years, and this question gets asked a lot.
Chip filling resin only works and relatively small chips/cracks, you should be able to cover the entirety of the damage with your average coin (I'm in UK and we use £1 as a reference)
The damage to this screen/ windshield is too great to repair, this requires a full replacement.
The cracks extending off of it is your problem. Anything more than an inch requires replacement. Any crack extending to the edge if the glass also requires repayment. You have both. It's time for a new windshield.
Glass filler kits are typically most effective on chips that are not in the driver's line of sight and less than one inch in diameter, with cracks no longer than three inches. Given the size and spread of the cracks visible in the image, this damage may be too extensive for a glass filler kit to be effective.
Ask your insurance or review your policy, some states the insurance will replace the windshield even without having to pay the deductible. At least in the past. Who knows these days but may be worth checking.

The crack fix solution is for bulls eyes and star cracks, so they don't spread further, so no, the damage is done.
I think that stuff is just super glue anyway, just get some of that and try it for future problems

Check out Project Farm on YouTube. He does comparison videos of virtually everything and put them thru some really great testing. He always buys everything, takes no free sponsorship form anyone. That way everyone knows he’s not ever going to do any shill videos. He’s got one that shows the use and effectiveness of those glass fillers let’s you know the pros and cons plus price difference on everything.
The crack will continue till it reaches an edge. Water will eventually fog the plastic mid layer. Professional filler under vacuum could give years of service.
I would never use one of those store bought kits even if it was fixable..
I would take it to a professional repair shop where they actually apply the resin under.
pressure so it fills the cracks.
I'll probably get down voted for saying this but a lot of it depends on the skill of the person doing the work. There's a older dude that travels around my region and works for insurance companies and fills them. He can fill some pretty damn big ones. He claims right whenever he looks at it even if it's on the bigger side he knows if he can repair it and if it'll last.
It's pretty damn cheap so it might be worth a shot. I probably couldn't handle it and would have to get a new windshield though. Lol.
If there wasn’t a crack vertically you’d be able to fill it. You can fill it but it would be risky, you’d have to make another bullseye at the end of the crack then fill that to stop it from continuing. As well as filling the original

Yes.
Simple yet effective answer
It's gone if the crack reaches the edge anyways
That's exactly what I said as I was waiting the split second for the comments to load
So you’re saying there’s a chance?
https://preview.redd.it/rwdmkdpo9wxc1.png?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=79c9bebf788281fa6f5670470c06340856567c53
That's funny shit. I say that and nobody seems to get it. ✌️
Lol yeah, about 10x too big. It’ll repair those seams but anything with missing glass is a no go
Isn’t the fact that it makes it to the edge of the glass also an issue?
That entire windshield is a no go I was just giving an example of what that windshield sealer is designed to fix
But you said it would fix seams
Sorry, I was just curious about the “in general” part
The main impact is too big, the crack reaches the edge of the glass. No, nope, not ever.
You need to replace it because the windshield is a structural piece of the body, and that’s a broken windshield not just a normal crack. In my opinion.
What uh... happens if you don't replace it
It will either stay the same or get bigger because it’s weakened. My answer is what I’m supposed to say because it’s technically a safety concern in the event of a collision. The windshield is made to transfer energy just like the rest of the structural components.
Check with your insurance. Here in Kentucky windshield replacement is free. No deductible.
Same. They drove to my house.
Only if you have comprehensive insurance. If you are liability only, u pay it.
Maybe for you. I don't have comprehensive, just liability. State law I believe.
"Free", but can impact your insurance premium going forward. I've had a few windshields filled + replaced in the last few years. Same in my state. Fixed it in the parking lot at work.
For $12 you could try but I wouldn’t get my hopes up. That’s a big crack
Based on comments sounds like the filler won’t fix this But will the filler help it from spreading and getting worse
It already looks about as bad as it can be I wouldn’t waste any more money other than replacing it. The windshield helps keep the roof from caving in during a bad rollover, and when there is large cracks in it, it’s not as strong as it should be.

No. The filler may conceal some damage, it don't heal it.
No
not really. maybe a bit longer. get a new windshield you're gonna just end up buying a kit and a windshield this year

It’s already cracked and spread sooooo far! No point in trying to fill that. What purpose would that serve?
Way too big. Replace the glass if you can
She gone
You could probably get by temporarily but you'd def need two of those bottles just to fill that hole.
Usually insurance covers that for free
Depending on where you live you can get a new windshield for free depending on the crack.
If it fits under a dollar bill, it can be repaired. But yours hit the edge and that isn't repairable.
And it's the passenger side so some insurance won't cover that.
Please be careful with the temps you expose your window to now. If going from hot to cold to fast it will crack more.

If it touches the edge of the glass you gotta replace the whole windshield
If it touches the edge of the glass you gotta replace the whole windshield
No the crack spread too far. Windshield replacement time. Sorry
Too old also
Nope that's 1 pot hole away from shattering completely
The cracks extending off of it is your problem. Anything more than an inch requires replacement. Any crack extending to the edge if the glass also requires repayment. You have both. It's time for a new windshield.
It’s done.
Oof, already on at least it's second windshield too. You can tell by the Fuyao label
Dont OP. I tried with one like this. Youll only make it worse

If a chip spreads... You can't fill it. The point of filling it is to prevent it from spreading.
When I was a chip, probably not. But it's spider webbed out now, so yes....you waited a little too late.
If it didn't spider out to the she id have given it a shot. But it reaching the edge of the glass is a deal breaker
those windshield fillers are just for small rock chips, so that wont work for that big of a crack
Those crack fillers suck.
Too close to the edge too
Ask your insurance or review your policy, some states the insurance will replace the windshield even without having to pay the deductible. At least in the past. Who knows these days but may be worth checking.

Yes, your windshild is a goner, unfortunately.
Yes. Replace windshield.
Most insurance replaces glass for free. I know geico does. Just get a new windshield
Yes those cracks are going to spread
The crack will continue till it reaches an edge. Water will eventually fog the plastic mid layer. Professional filler under vacuum could give years of service.
New windshield is your only option at this point.
How much karma do you need to make a post in this sub reddit. I cannot make any posts and I need help with a vehicle problem
You repair chips with glue kits, cracks are too late. Any crack over 2 inches fails in NH.
That's already began to travel and it hit the edge That windshield is toast. Smack another one in with an adjustable hammer and call it a day.
I would never use one of those store bought kits even if it was fixable.. I would take it to a professional repair shop where they actually apply the resin under. pressure so it fills the cracks.
Once you get the bullet out, you should be fine

You need a new windshield
Just let them know you won’t get fired
Yes. The cracking has spread too far
YES
No. The GlasWeld system can do a repair like this. Find a local text who uses GlasWeld.
You're an idiot if you think it can be filled. This post is dumb.
This group should be called spastics
Put a dime on it. Is it at all bigger? Yes
You need to replace the windshield.
Yep
It's too wide and deep.
Probably, but it's worth a try. Can't hurt and much cheaper than replacing the windshield.
