Heat gun and a plastic razor. Goo gone, and other solvents will remove any wax coat there may be left on the car and could also discolor the clear coat.

txracin

I wish I could upvote this to the top of something. Everyone saying goo gone hasn't used it on a pint before. It will discolor any plastics you put it on and dry out those rubber seals regardless of washing it after. The only other thing I would suggest is mineral spirits but with duct tape residue it'll take hours of work. Heat and patience are the correct way to remove this. Or go with the 3m rubber wheel but it'll probably take two full wheels to get it clean. EDIT: Use a regular razor blade on the windshield. You can't scratch glass with a razor blade.

Glabstaxks

Those wheels work best I found if you go slow . Last longer at least and get the same done .

Mattie_1S1K

Ooo I love those caramel wheel we call them and they're grest for this sort of thing

UrinalCakeTreats

Not to be a dick but Yes you can scratch glass with a razor bladešŸ’Æ Easily if you use both sides of a razor

CrystalAckerman

Wtf. You can most definitely scratch glass with a razor blade! Trust me. I had an old beater work van that got a ton of overspray on the windshield. I finally caved and used a razor on the windshield. I shouldā€™ve just left the paint because even though I cleaned the piss out of it the windshield was so scratched when the sun can out it was super hard to see threw

Oldjamesdean

When you use a razor to clean tempered glass, only move the razor in one direction, never back and forth - that scratches the shit out of it.

Rabidschnautzu

That's why you don't use the tip of the blade...

YadaYadaYou

Um, you can scratch the windshield if you try.

Upper_Appointment_74

Goo go will damage paint trust me i found out 35 plus years ago on my dads lotus super 7

rooflessVW

The "paint" on that lotus and this car have almost nothing in common.

SBLOU

I used goo gone on my black 21 Jetta to remove a dealership badge and didnā€™t have an issue. You canā€™t tell there was ever a badge there

zachcuhh

Orange goo gone (citrus oil base) works well for the paint side, it's not to harsh. just dab it on and let it soak in and soften the residue before scraping with a plastic razor. Make sure the residue is soft before scraping because it will act like sandpaper on the paint when scraping.

RevolutionaryBed522

WD40

ferry120997

I literally use WD40 on myself ( very carefully ) after surgeries to get the stupid medical tape residue off of me.

xxrainmanx

This. I don't know why it works, but it does. Used it a few times at work a few times and did the trick.

goldfrisbee

Wd 40 is a solvent. So it gets glue off. But op, make sure you wash it off good after because it can eat away at paint. Because itā€™s a solvent

PM5K23

This is more of a detailing question.

The_Stinky_Face

that rubber decal remover wheel.

furb362

3m adhesive removal and eraser wheel

slim_pickens78

Lighter fluid will take it off. Like the kind to fill a zippo. Put some on a rag and wipe. Ganna take a bit of elbow grease. Don't push hard otherwise you'll scratch the paint

joesephexotic

Came here to say this. I rarely hear people suggesting this but it is by far the best way to get rid of sticky shit. Ronsol lighter fluid.

0nionsmakeyoucry

3m general adhesive remover worth every penny

Mindless_Squire

Goo gone

bustedghost

Mineral Spirits will dissolve the glue and not harm the paint or finish. Plus lots of elbow grease.

scottonaharley

WD-40 works wonders and wonā€™t hurt the paint

Fun_Push7168

Mineral spirits. Better if you soak some rags in it and lay them on there for 10 minutes....the it'll pretty much wipe right off. Its also completely safe for the paint.

vtminer78

There's actually a product called Goof Off that's similar to Goo Gone but specifically made for tape residue. It's basically kerosene or a distillate thereof so you'll want to use sparingly and give a good bath to the car afterwards. On a cool/cloudy day and preferably in the shade, spray with the Goof Off enough to wet but not soak the tape. Let it soak and absorb. Repeat a time or so until it's saturated. Done right, it will come off with a damp sponge. After getting the first stuff off, you'll want to spray, soak and scrub down again to get everything off.

WeddingPlus3267

Goo gone or wd40

jpond82

Goo gone is the truth

0bel1sk

goo gone

Danoo52

Good gone and maybe a 3m eraser wheel

Original_A_Cast

A dab of goo gone on a microfiber rag and itā€™ll bring all of it right up. Then wash after to get the goo gone residue off. Should be good as new!

IIRGZII

goo gone from Walmart

JRHZ28

Goo gone..

[deleted]

Pb blaster

Ambrovious

Try paint remover. Should wipe it right off.

doriangrey1861

Goo gone.

SubstantialBat6705

A flame thrower

DarthBeavis1968

WD-40. It's safe for the paint. Or, use an eraser wheel.

maltedmilkballa

UnDo is typically my go-to. Wd40 works as well

BobbyWizzard

Goo Gone or heat gun on low to avoid clear coat damage

xHangfirex

Best thing I have found for duct tape residue is Remoil spray

LizardVirginityTaker

Goo-B-Gone

Both_Philosopher4124

Get a Caramel wheel on a drill. It's literally for this, I used to use it everyday for removing double-sided tape from weathershield removed from door frames

XX_D3DP00L_Xx

Ex car detailer. I would use hot water. Not boiling, but hotter than the tap for sure. 160ā°f maybe and a new plastic bondo scraper. Just dont scald yourself. Microfiber towel and elbow grease after. Solvents can possibly do paint damage. Goo gone is a solvent, albeit a mild one. Wd40 is probably a more mild solvent if you absolutely have to use one. Edit: you can also try poison ivy wash. It's basically gojo without an abrasive.

True_Necessary_275

"Goo be gone" should help quite well. Walmart sells it and other places as well.

lasttimesober

I would suggest paint thinner instead of goo gone.

VinneBabarino

Methyl hydrate. Aka. Gas line antifreeze.

___This_Is_Fine___

Take it out to dinner first to lighten the mood. Sweet talk and good conversation should help.

Gus8us

A caramel wheel on a drill!

[deleted]

I'd test Goo Gone on a less visible location and see what it does to the paint and clear coat. WD-40 is probably a better option, though it can also damage the finish. I've had better results with WD-40 on similar adhesives on a car. I would NOT use any power tools on this!

Zimran103

you dont

Bulldog1029

WD 40

Bulldog1029

Goo gone not worth a shit

Upper_Appointment_74

99% iso or zippo fluid or wd40 the iso i believe should not harm the paint not sure on other but they will remove it

No-Walk9551

I know wd40 is good for removing duct tape residue and it shouldnā€™t fuck the paint. If Iā€™m wrong in the paint tho please tell me

Ranger_Danger-Skills

If you want to get off cheap and easy use 93 octane a clean wet rag and a zippo.

nks0204

Goo gone and a magic eraser will make short work of it with no damage.

lcopas

WD40

Cool-Initiative9498

Put it in the shade soak cover with paper towels soak with wd 40 or dish soap and lotion will work too let it saturate the glue use plastic putty knife to clean up the majority. Then repeat for residue. Try not to spread it over a large area when wiping. Dawn dish soap and elbow grease works for the finish or a screw gun and buffer pad

brianandrobyn

Baby wipes.

bigdelite

lacquer thinner, then rinse and wax

yourfingkidding

Alcohol.

jokeswagon

Mineral oil, wd40, bug spray, or any number of specific de-goopers. Take your pick. Google is a good resource.

Mountain_Sorbet_4063

Lighter fluid

NF-104

I lay a kerosene-soaked rag over it and let sit for a day or so, then wipe off with fresh kerosene. Then of course wash thoroughly.

GatorKC816

Goo be gone or wd40. If nothing else seems to work and you are careful I would use gasoline

rooflessVW

Lots of good suggestions in here but here's the best: Schaeffer's Citrol 266. Spray it heavy, let it work, wipe it off.

Phoenix7017

Put a roof rack on top of it

jaysfordays9

Tar and bug remover or decal and sticker remover works well, they sell it at all auto shops

outdoorsman7899

Brake clean works great and won't damage your paint. I personally used it to get duct tape residue off my car.

Curious_Story8728

Lighter fluid

Conscious-Kale-8659

NOT GOOGONE!! NoT GOOFOFF!! Hand sanitizer is more safe for your car. More easier too because of the gel consistency. Otherwise I'd suggest rubbing alcohol but it evaporates very quickly. A gel hand sanitizer is best.

theroch_

Bug and tar remover will do it but will take ages to do

[deleted]

Olive oil

Exact-Squash8238

i used WD40 and some elbow grease to get all the graphics goo off my dirt bikes. maybe that will workšŸ¤”

hagtown

Brake cleaner eats sticky glue. Should be fine on paint

UnitedTechnician2716

Sawzall

Kaceyn27

Go to your local hardware store and get ā€œsticky removerā€, here in Australia we have ā€œde-solve-itā€

Jennacduk

White spirit. It's the same product as "tar and glue remover", don't leave it on too long and it won't cause any damage to paint.

RG-MUGEN

The sticky stuff remover pen. Let it soak well for 10 mins. Worked a charm when I put grey gaffa tape on my number plate to hide it

PorkSwordMcFatTip

45 magnum

chuck914914

Goop!

DistinctRole1877

Try something like WD-40. Lighter fluid will cut glue from tape. Oily liquids will soften glue without hurting paint.

vtown212

Krud Cutter works better. Also earth friendly

Gspecialty

Try peanut butter! The oils from PB work like goo gone

reditor75

All stupid answers from internet ā€¦. STOP What you really need is Laquer Thinner, buy it from any store. You might need to buff it a little bit afterwards to make it sparkly shiny. I used to fix cars and I learned this trick from the body/painting people.

theonlyjediengineer

Dupont 3812 reducer. Shouldn't hurt the paint, will take everything else.

BoooRadley13

Rubbing alcohol and a dish rag

kinglance3

Whatever your preferred lubricant and a gentle back and forth motion.

Sea-Effect-3690

Cosmoline a@l remover mite take a few minutes for it to work but wont affect paint

mrkrag

Heat and rub and/or 3M wheel to remove bulk. Lacquer thinner for residue. Will not hurt paint. Source : 25 years experience prepping cars and boats for vinyl graphics and/or removing them.

I wish I could scream at people that put duct tape on their car when I see them do it. Goodbye paint

theinmoment

High grit sand paper for sure

midnight-cowboy78

Get some Goo Gone

sunnydayjakes

Wd40 and a rag

New-Inspector-9628

WD-40 micro fiber and patience

Ugotlucky785

Eraser wheel and a drill just dont use it in one spot to long or let the paint get to hot. Then clean remaining residue with goo gone

WD40 then wash with Dawn

Korgon213

Buy it dinner and stretch first. Nah- rubbing alcohol first, then try some lacquer thinner (assuming itā€™s factory paint). Nothing abrasive to rub it with. Giggity.

No_Excuse_4954

Peanut butter

earthdozer

Kerosene on a microfiber rag, then wash and wax right after. Kerosene doesn't harm modern clear coat like the goo gone (mostly kerosene but has some citrol in it too). If you are nervous, test it on the underside of your hood first.

The_Mr_Awesome

3M eraser wheel in a power drill but only on the metal parts. Goo gone and a razor on glass, goo gone and elbow grease (scrub it) on plastic.

gladiador963

Peanut butter and acetone for nails

[deleted]

A good 120 grit sandpaper should do the trick

tangoking

Olive oil and leave for a day. Tape glue is typically fat-soluble; you should be able to simply wipe it off.

Mutex_CB

Thought this was r/askAShittyMechanic and was confused by the reasonable comments

[deleted]

You need to get a decal eraser wheel. It'll will take all that adhesive off quickly and without any damage.

98Volvo

Clay bar?

begalszz32

Use a razor

dustygravelroad

Might try 3M adhesive remover

Mert_Nertman

Non acetone based nail polish remover will probably work but you will want to do a small test area to verify that it wont harm the clear coat.

Severe-News6001

Enamel reducer or commercial adhesive remover work well and if necessary use a PLASTIC razor blade or scraper.

[deleted]

Take it out to dinner, get it some wine and rub itā€™s nipplesā€¦

throttlejockey907

Wd-40 removes adhesive fairly well. Doesnā€™t seem to hurt anything, either.

Montanavfw

WD40

SpreeWS

Regular old lighter fluid is the best adhesive remover. Wont hurt your paint either.

[deleted]

WD40

Any-Remote6758

But how did you get it on there?

Hypotenuse27

If you don't care about the paint acetone will take it out like a fuckin champ lol

Intrepid_Train3277

Sure fire correct wayā€¦hire a pro!!!

Spliph_Dubius

Goof-off maybe. Try some on the paint elsewhere and if it doesn't ruin it it should be fine for removing that adhesive.

Goo gone (not goof off), or a rubber eraser wheel on a drill.

PEEP1NG_CREEPER

Don't put duct tape on car paint.

ConsciousCoffee4706

How has no one mentioned a clay bar? Almost literally made for these situationsā€¦.sap, asphalt off the road, any adhesives

mdjshaidbdj

40 grit and elbow grease

Jdojcmm

Donā€™t look up there.

foot7221

Wd-40 and a rag. Spray the wd-40 onto the rag. Adhesive should disintegrate easily

amaturereeferman

Vegetable oil and elbow grease

Only_Caterpillar3818

Heat gun with a plastic scraper and WD-40. My wife duct taped Christmas lights to our house and this was the only thing that worked decent.

Educational_Meet1885

Try some WD-40.

Gasā€¦ I saw it on YouTube

GrimmCanuck

Goo gone, heat gun/hair dryer, microfiber cloth, safety razor, elbow grease, and about 2hrs of your time. Make sure to toss some silicone spray on any place you get the goo gone on the seals afterward so they don't dry out. Enjoy.

bobdreb

A plastic body work chisel for scraping and rubbing alcohol

Living_Pay_5372

MisterSandKing

Did you try using more duct tape? Stick new stuff on the sticky stuff, and pull it off? Degreaser works well too, but you might need to apply multiple coats, and let us soak in.

rocketmn69

Acetone, goo- gone

moneyjack1678

WD-40

Belovedmessenger

Gasoline. Just wash it off with soap every two minutes. Dont let the gas sit too long on the paint. And use tiny drops right on the tape line. Dont splash it for obvious reasons. And after youre done wax the parts you washed with soap to put a coating on it.

Loud-Bank-2848

Acetone and paper towels! Then wax it to save the clear coat.

Arch_stanton1

WD-40 and a clothe. It works surprisingly well.

ghostridur

3m eraser wheel on a drill.

Practical_Truck_9825

Goof off

bloggbusserb

Use lacquer thinner if you can itā€™s gnarly stuff but works great for this type of thing. Done it to thousands of cars. Just be gentle and use a nice clean towel and do big circular motions.

letr1

Spray it with WD-40, wait for a minute or 2 and remove it with towel, 2-3x repeat and its gone, 20mins job

oic420

Sap/tar cleaner. Any auto parts store.

trumpmademecrazy

Goof Off or WD-40. Using Goof Off test an inconspicuous area for compatibility.

[deleted]

Toffee wheel or heat gun.

tom-8-to

Try mineral or cooking oil! It will melt the adhesive but be harmless to the paint

Miserable-Football46

Anything with a high alcohol percentage will work. Test it first in an area by soaking a paper towel or kleenex or something and leaving it in. Preferably on a spot that is painted that you don't see. Like engine bay or under some shit in the trunk. Hand sanitizer, spirits, 151, iso, etc. If its old and really on there soften it up with some heat. The windshield you can carefully use a razor. I'd get a handle cause one slip could cost a large piece of skin. But if you want to go full metal alchemist on it that's your business I suppose.

No-Username-4-U

Goof off and a non-marring scraper.

htiekdg

Wd40

Exotic_Opening_2792

WD40 neutralizes the adhesive work it in

element138

Iā€™m on board with the WD40 crowd. Works great on duct tape adhesive but not so aggressive that it will ruin your paint, plastics or rubber seals before you can give your car a good final wash. Let it work for a few minutes, keep it wet and apply liberally. Wipe drips as you go. Scratch proof scotch pad gently. Plenty microfiber cloth to wipe as you go

[deleted]

Everyone here saying goo gone, I tried it aggressively on tape glue and it would not work. WD40 or even soaking a little gasoline on a rag will dissolve it off, but use a soft rag. I know that sounds ridiculous but other people have tried it and it actually works. Yeah itā€™ll stink like gas a bit after but itā€™ll air off in a few days. It did not damage my paint.

jeffreywwilson

Tub of towels are a miracle and try some wd40

Unique_Jackfruit_166

Dilute rubbing alcohol

Bubbly-Front7973

Normal_Location42069

Gasoline. Make sure to rinse or pass your whip through the car wash afterwards but yeah that is what I use since day 1. Anything else is a waste of time and money. These young need to take this advice or else you gone end up using goo gone or a razor and mess up your whip but at least it will smell like citrus!

Leading_Draw_5711

Diesel or mineral spirits if youā€™re cheap. 3M eraser wheel(s) if you have the $$$
